I lay broiling in the heat of frustration. Since I'd ended up here, he'd been so compelling, so unbearably lovely…and for some strange reason he would barely look at me when my discourse with him warmed. But he knew by now how I thought, and yet tried his hardest to comfort me in ways he had to know were attracting me. What was his problem?
The door opened. "So he ended up putting you in here, huh? That'll help a lot, considering what he still bothers himself with. He doesn't sleep, Kuja. Not often."
I barely turned my head——Cloud Strife. He stood here with several of those cupcakes, a half-smile trembling on his face. "Why, Cloud…. Where is Sephiroth, and why did he leave?"
"He's trying to figure out if there really is a way for you to go home…I think he's also trying to discover how you relate to the JENOVA principle. The spontaneous generation of sentience in Lifestream substrates. He thinks you might be something the Lifestream itself made, rather than the real Kuja. He's not sure whether you're an accident of evolution or the real thing."
Taken aback would've been a poor way to describe the audible stop in my head. "B…But Cloud, I am Kuja. There is no other."
"There have been times the Lifestream makes things. I was almost copied myself. His mother, JENOVA…it seems what he thought was her actual form was simply substrate. He, himself, was a byproduct of Mako. Filled with Mako. And then basically highly-powered, driven insane, and nearly destroyed. Your situation was the same…though I know you're the real Kuja. I know he's the real Vivi. I don't know how I know, exactly, but you two couldn't possibly ever be copied. Hojo didn't find the Lifestream's Mako in you, remember?"
I nodded. "But I wonder why he's afraid of me."
"He's not exactly afraid. He thinks you might be a Lifestream copy…and if that was the case, you two would be the same…. You might as well be brothers, or you could be his ancestor, if you're made of that substance we found inside you. If you're actually made of Mist, the two of you are related."
The idea sobered my mind. "He…He thinks I may somehow have been an ancestor of his. JENOVA was an alien being, or thought to have been, and he was made of the chaotic fusions of the Lifestream?"
"In a nutshell. But if he figures out you're real and not copied, he'll come back here…and I doubt he'll be afraid of anything anymore. He's not a careless man, Kuja." Cloud sat down beside me. "He's also not a forbidding one if he knows something's real. But he mentioned to you that after his Safer transmutation, and JENOVA's death, Planet was restored…right?"
The patterns were weaving in front of me. "…He's not sure anything is real anymore. He's either insane or he's half-in-half-out of reality itself."
Cloud nodded. One gloved hand held out a cupcake.
"Thank you…." I took the morsel and picked it slowly apart…who could have thought a man so strong and handsome could be convinced the world around him wasn't real? If that was the case, neither he nor I were anywhere near recovered. But if I were some imaginary thing, wouldn't I know it? If I were but a copy, what would happen to me——when I disappeared? I chose to drown the thought with cupcake before I worried too hard over it.
He leaned back onto the bed. "This isn't actually his room. It's mine. But he stays here so often he locked the one he slept in for years…. I'm always out when he's in, or he's out when I'm here. But it's been this way for…longer than I can remember." One finger idly swiped at a lingering bit of chocolate on my mouth. "Enjoying them?"
"Y—Yes," I whispered——I hadn't expected his touch. He'd been confused with me earlier…and now, just seemed to accept his lot without a word. His eyes, unlike Sephiroth's, seemed as though they were blue….
Maybe it was my imagination there, but he'd grown closer to me on the bed. Large fingers closed over mine…with his teeth he stripped off his other glove, letting it drop onto his lap. "I can see that…." He leaned in to look at me, bare hand holding to my forehead. "You're not too warm; a bit bothered, but you've had so many mixed signals here I'm surprised you haven't run away by now."
"Not so strange." I chose not to mention that he himself was providing several of them. "I've been so confused today, and there have been so many hand touches, sitting in the shower, lifting me, holding me——I want someone to do something and say what they want out of it, for Chaos' sakes."
He smirked. "I could say a lot to you, Kuja, but I doubt Sephiroth would be very happy with me. As a matter of fact, it'd probably piss him off…he seems very protective of you, as well as possessive. I can't understand why, but I doubt there's even an explanation for his feelings half the time." But laughing low, he added, "I estimate the same applies to you. Your face always seems to wear three different emotions or none at all."
"Very apt." I almost kicked him for that one, but held both my tongue and my foot. Cloud Strife was amusing if nothing else.
The discussion hadn't gone unnoticed; that locked door hid a rather peevishly occupied General.
"So…, with these——," He pored over the brief laboratory results he'd stolen from Hojo, "the only real way to know if Kuja exists is to stuff him in a Mako chamber and freeze him. But if I do that, and he isn't real——"
If he isn't real, I don't know what I'll do with myself. I thought there was some way to get out of this world. To get away from Midgar, Planet…. If I can slip backward in time, to Kuja's time, I can escape my own reality. I can keep Shinra from being born…The Planet itself from being destroyed with Mako reactors…. Hojo….
He clenched his fist. The main reason he wanted this world to burn. Maybe it would exist later, but without him, there wouldn't be JENOVA. If he survived the chronological anomaly, he could warn against using the Lifestream for anything else. Vivi had mentioned they fell through a tree?
Picking up the book, he skimmed back until he found Gaia's map. "…The Iifa tree. This was the source of Mist, and the substance Hojo determined predated the Lifestream. I suspect Kuja is in fact the genuine article, but I can't prove it, and neither can he. Cloud himself thought he might've been a copy of the real one. And I…." Shaking his head, he determined, "I'm going to lock both of us into the chamber. If I'm going to return to a substrate form, and Kuja is substrate, I don't want him leaving without me…."
Oh, but doing so could merge us permanently together and unleash the Safer transformation. I'm better off not doing it at all.
"Damn it, I wish I had some answers." He pounded the desk, spilling his long-cold coffee over onto the carpet. "Someone, somewhere, has to have an idea——I'd ask Vivi if I thought it'd help."
"That's a good plan. Asking a nine-year-old how to get through the Lifestream."
"Cloud, how did you get in here?" He rose from his chair and folded papers into the book. Nothing could save Kuja if Hojo found the lab reports…he'd take that beautiful creature and destroy him. Vivi would be parentless. Hell, Hojo would experiment on Vivi if he found out what he was.
"Picked the lock. Yuffie's a surprisingly great teacher." The blond shook his head. "So you want answers to whatever you're working on. Ever consider that you're working too hard?"
Sephiroth miserably glared into the mirror. He hadn't slept on the information yet. What time was it, midnight? Later? And what made Cloud come in here in the first place? "…If I'm working too hard, Strife, tell me what I can do to take the chaos out of my brain. How can I shut this stress out?"
"Fuck Kuja. He's practically begged for it all day."
That turned the General around on his feet. "What do you mean, 'fuck Kuja'? He's a visitor from a completely different time. Some kind of animal, with unreal sentience, and power independent of Materia. How am I to know I won't destabilize? Or he won't?"
"Sometimes you take a chance, Seph. You would have to be blind not to notice the signals he's thrown at you. You had him from the moment you met him. The guy can smell you. Yeah, so, he has a tail. So what? Everything else looks human. He's a higher form of primate, perhaps, or some kind of evolved cat…Besides, do you think Rufus would even give you half a chance if he could get Kuja?"
"…Rufus would rape Kuja if he had him alone in a room. No way I'm letting him anywhere near…." But why was the question. Inside, he felt as though he'd met a person and not a Mako clone. But he didn't know for sure——and what made him turn from the mirror, throw his hands through his hair?
"What is he fond of? Do you know for sure he's lusting after me?"
"Kuja and I had a loooong talk on that subject. He's so confused as to where you stand, he's got no brains left to figure out a way home. Hell, if he is a Mako clone, you could figure out your own problems better through his own destabilization. What are you going to do, sit here all night while a young, angelic creature is half naked in your bed and determined to solve his own problems? He's as moody as a cat in heat."
Sephiroth frowned. "And when he's gotten his head straight, maybe he'll have some ideas for us."
