Chapter 40: The March North: The Arrival
She came to the light at the end of a long, dark cave. Stepping through the mouth, a sight beheld her like none she had ever seen before. The floor was made of rocks that were a beautiful cyan color. But what captured her attention even more were the walls. They almost looked as if they were made of pure crystal.
"Wow!" shouted Scarlet. "That's amazing! It's all Materia!"
"The outside is rich with Mako energy," explained Rufus as he followed her though the mouth of the cave. "The inside is a treasure trove of Materia. This truly is the Promised Land."
"There is no such thing as the Promised Land," Hojo dismissed as he followed behind the president. "It's a legend; an old wives tale. It's utterly ridiculous."
Rufus completely disregarded him. "Everything's as I imagined it to be. Isn't it splendid? It is that kind of dullness that makes you a second-rate scientist."
"You're entitled to you're opinion," Hojo replied neutrally.
"So are you," Rufus said.
"I'll be damned," said Heidegger as he passed through the mouth of the cave. "They said nobody could make it here, but we just became the first."
"And I'm the first man to reach the North Pole!" Rufus announced triumphantly.
"I came through first," Scarlett quietly protested.
"He said first man," Heidegger enforced.
"All we need to do now is set up the groundbreaking ceremony, Rufus announced. "We'll begin construction within a week. The new city will be finished by June."
And then, the ground suddenly shook.
"What's happening?" demanded Rufus.
"Palmer's arriving," Heidegger announced as the fat man made his way through the cave.
"Very funny, asshole," he replied.
And then, the ground shook again.
"It's coming from within the wall!" Scarlet announced. "Something's in there! It's moving!"
And then, a huge eye opened in the wall. It glared at the intruders for but a moment before closing again.
"I think I just shat myself!" Palmer frantically announced.
"What the hell was that?" demanded Heidegger.
"Weapon," observed Hojo calmly. "Then it really does exist. I didn't believe in it."
"What does this mean?" asked Rufus.
"Weapon," replied Hojo. "Monsters created by the Planet. They appear when the Planet is in danger, reducing everything to nothingness."
"Monsters?" asked Rufus. "How many?"
"Five of them," Hojo replied. "Each unique."
"This sounds like you got it out of some monster movie," Rufus suggested.
"That's what was stated in Professor Gast's report," Hojo insisted.
"I never saw that report," dismissed Rufus. "Where is it?"
"Here," Hojo replied, pointing to his brain. "Right here."
"You keep a lot of things to yourself," Rufus observed.
"Much of this is privileged information," Hojo insisted.
"Just remember who's in charge of the company," Rufus reminded him.
The ground shook again, and another eye opened. Only this time, it was on the wall opposite of where the first one opened.
"This place is alive," Heidegger said.
And then, another eye opened: on the floor, beneath Palmer.
"Jesus H. Christ!" he shouted as he staggered away.
"Mr. President," began Scarlet. "I've got a bad feeling about this place."
"Maybe we should go back to our ship now," Rufus suggested. "We need to prepare for the inspection anyway."
And then, Cloud emerged from the mouth of the cave. He was followed by Barret, Red XIII, Cait Sith, Yuffie, Cid, Vincent, and a very nervous-looking Tifa.
"Hey!" exclaimed Scarlet. "Where did you come from?"
"Don't know," replied Cloud. "But this place is going to get rough. Better leave things to me and get out of here while you still can!"
Tifa began to shake. She realized what he was thinking.
"Leave things to you?" retorted Rufus. "I don't know what you mean."
"This is where the Reunion is happening," Cloud continued. "Where everything begins and ends."
"Cloud!" exclaimed Tifa.
"Hey!" shouted Barret. "We're here to help you!"
"It's now time," Cloud announced.
"You can't hear my voice?" Tifa cried in a shaky tone.
"You alright?" asked Barret.
Cloud simply nodded. He then took out the Black Materia.
"No, don't!" begged Tifa. "Please stop, Cloud!"
"Leave the rest to me," Cloud said. He then turned his head toward what appeared to be a crystal cocoon above.
Inside that cocoon, seemingly asleep, was the real Sephiroth.
"Here he is," Cloud said neutrally.
"Wait!" whispered Tifa. "Just a little longer!"
Cloud then turned to his companions. "Everyone, thanks for everything," he began. "And I'm sorry."
And then, he noticed tears streaming down someone's face.
"Especially you, Tifa," he continued. "I'm really sorry. You've been so good to me. I don't know what to say. I never lived up to being Cloud."
He then gave her one of the most sincere looks he had ever given her. "Tifa, maybe one day you'll meet the real Cloud."
Tifa fell to her knees. "You're the real Cloud," she sobbed.
And then, Hojo began to cackle. "This is perfect!" he said. "It means that my experiment was a complete success." He approached Cloud, and took a long look at him. "What number were you? Huh? Where is your tattoo?"
"Professor Hojo," began Cloud. "I don't have a number. You didn't give me one because you said I was a failed experiment."
"What the hell?" replied Hojo. "You mean only a failure made it here?"
"Professor," Cloud continued, "please give me a number. Please, Professor."
"Shut up, miserable failure," sighed Hojo.
"Who are you, really?" demanded Rufus.
"He's a Sephiroth-clone I created after the real Sephiroth died five years ago," Hojo replied. "Jenova cells and Mako, with my knowledge and skills, have been combined with science and nature to bring him to life." He turned for another look at Cloud. "I'm not wild about the failure part, but the Jenova Reunion Theory has now been proven. You see, even if Jenova's body is dismembered, it will eventually become one again. That's what is meant by Jenova's Reunion. I have been waiting for the Reunion to start. Five years have passed, and now the clones have begun to return." He then took a look around the area. "I thought the clones would begin to gather at Midgar where Jenova is stored. But my predictions were not entirely correct. Jenova itself began to move away from the Shinra Building. But being a genius that I am, I soon figured it out." He looked up at the cocoon. "You see, it was all Sephiroth's doing. Sephiroth is not just content to diffuse his will into the Lifestream; he wants to manipulate the clones himself."
"Yes," said Cloud. "That was how it got started."
"I wondered where the clones were going," Hojo continued, "but I was never able to figure it out."
"I couldn't figure it out, either," Cloud said.
Barret, meanwhile, helped Tifa to her feet.
"The one thing that I did know was that Sephiroth was at their final destination," Hojo finished.
"I wasn't pursuing Sephiroth," Cloud whispered. "I was being summoned by Sephiroth. All the anger and hatred I bore him made it impossible for me to ever forget him. That and what he gave me."
And then, Cloud realized his destiny.
"Sephiroth?" he called. "Sephiroth? I'm here. And I brought you the Black Materia. Show yourself to me. Where are you?"
He then looked up at the cocoon. It almost seemed as if Sephiroth was listening.
"Sephiroth," Cloud continued. "So we finally meet again."
"Did you see it?" gloated Hojo. "It's Sephiroth! So he is here! This is perfect! Both Jenova's Reunion and Sephiroth's will! They won't be diffused into the Lifestream, but gathered here!"
"What are you so happy about, Professor?" demanded Tifa. "You know what this means, don't you? Cloud has the Black Materia! Sephiroth is going to summon Meteor! Every single person is going to die!"
"Whatever I say now is too little, too late," Rufus said. "We must evacuate. I want you all to come with me. There is still much more I want to hear."
"Master,"Cloud said. "It's time to awaken. I have it right here for you."
"Yo!" shouted Barret. "Cloud! Stop! Knock it off!"
"Cloud!" cried Tifa.
Cloud then turned to Tifa. "I'm really sorry," he said. "To you most of all. But I have to do this." He paused. "It's my destiny."
He then, without warning, and before anyone had time to process the action, raised his foot, driving it as hard as he could into Hojo's testicles.
Hojo immediately doubled to the ground.
"You really thought you could fool me?" Cloud said. "I don't believe any of the shit I heard from you!"
Tifa placed her hands over her mouth. Was she dreaming?
"I've been getting these premonitions," Cloud continued. "I've been having them since we attacked Reactor Number One. Sometimes they would warn me about what might happen next. In fact, it's been happening to most of us. And we've used them to try and prevent some tragic occurrences. Sometimes we were successful. Sometimes we weren't. And ever since we breached the Eternal Wind Barrier, I've been having premonitions of handing the Black Materia over to Sephiroth."
He took a look at his friends.
"But that's not happening!"
Tifa wanted to do it right then and there. She wanted nothing more than to run to him, throw her arms around him, kiss him, and tell him how she felt. The relief she was feeling was beyond comprehension.
"Here's what's going to happen," Cloud continued. "First, I'm getting rid of this Black Materia. We just need a volcano to toss this down."
Tifa suddenly began to smile. She could feel sweat trickling down her back, and her heart slowing down. Everything was going to be okay.
"Then I'm putting you all behind bars," Cloud announced.
"FREEZE!" Barret shouted as he raised his gun-arm, aiming at Rufus.
"You're wasting your precious time," Rufus pointed out. "No prosecutor will go after me."
"We'll see about that," Cloud informed him.
"I'm sorry to say," continued Rufus, "but I haven't broken any laws."
"That's not true!" Tifa shouted. "You were sanctioning illegal experiments conducted by Hojo. They were going on even after you became president!"
"Gimme the word, Cloud, and I'll do it!" shouted Barret, with his gun-arm still aimed at Rufus.
And then, without warning, a young woman, with red hair, and wearing a red dress, dashed out of the mouth of the cave and skidded to a stop a few feet from Cloud.
