Chapter 41: End of March: Things Fall Apart
The woman in the red dress stood silently among the baffled onlookers. She certainly looked out of place there, but that was the least of her worries.
Cloud, Tifa, and Barret paid especially close attention to her. Each of them found her somewhat familiar. But from where?
Everyone else, on the other hand, was completely stumped.
"Who is she?" whispered Yuffie to Cid.
"How the fuck should I know?" Cid whispered back. "She looks like Scarlet."
Everyone continued to stare. It was obvious she was not supposed to be there, yet she was certainly there for a reason.
"Can I help you?" Rufus asked, finally breaking the silence.
"I am Bestla," she announced, and said nothing more. She instead resumed her staring.
"I'm sorry, miss," Rufus continued, "but this is not the place for you. This is a confidential matter. Skedaddle!"
"Rufus Shinra," Bestla replied. "Now that you're standing, you look a lot taller."
"I'm not going to tell you again, missy," Rufus warned her. "Leave!"
Bestla remained unaffected. "I'm afraid not," she dismissed. "There's a reason I came here."
Rufus sighed. It was a defeated sigh, as he was getting a feeling of what she really wanted. "Twenty thousand gil and you didn't see anything here."
Bestla cackled. "I'm going to do far worse than blackmail you." She found it rather amusing how oblivious everyone was to her intentions.
And then, she saw Scarlet.
Bestla began to tremble slightly. A huge distraction clouded her. She had to tighten her grip on the staff to avoid dropping it. She knew she would see her, but she had been so focused on her plans that she failed to consider how she might react when she saw her again. She began to struggle not to cry.
"M-mom?" she stammered in a broken voice.
"Bestla?!" exclaimed Scarlet. "What are you doing here?"
"It's a long story," Bestla replied.
"I don't have time for it," Scarlet said in an annoyed tone of voice as she placed her hands on her hips. "What the hell are you doing here? You have a term paper due in a week that you're supposed to be working on!"
Bestla gave a guilty look. "Mom," she began as a tear rolled down her cheek, "I can explain..."
"Save it," Scarlet demanded.
Bestla stood there, sorely resisting the urge to run into Scarlet's arms. She still had a job to do. She had to fight the distraction.
"Second of all, what is with that makeup?!" Scarlet exclaimed. "It's making you look ten years older!"
"That's also a long story," Bestla replied.
"And that dress. That certainly isn't mine!" Scarlet said. "Look at that cleavage! Letting you get that crop top was one thing, but that dress makes you look like a goddam hooker!"
Tifa looked at Cloud. "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree," she whispered, obviously referencing the cleavage Scarlet was showing.
"Bestla Heidegger, you are grounded!" Scarlet continued. "And I'm pulling you out of cheerleading! And you're getting rid of that stone!"
"Bestla Heidegger?" Yuffie whispered. "They had a love child?"
"I guess," Cid replied. "She looks too old to be their daughter, though."
"I'm sorry," Bestla repeated. "Someday, you'll understand."
"That's what I'm supposed to say to you," Scarlet commented.
Bestla realized she had to focus. There would be time to get emotional later.
And then, the ground rumbled; everyone was caught up in the drama and failed to take notice.
"I ought to rip that dress right off of you and take you home in your underwear," Scarlet continued. "You're lucky I have a change of clothes in my cabin. For starters, though, lose that staff. It makes you look like some cult leader."
"What was that?" asked Bestla.
Just then, the ground rumbled again, more loudly and strongly than before.
"I said," repeated Scarlet in a firmer tone of voice, "lose that staff."
The ground rumbled once more, this time producing a crevice within a foot of Cloud and Tifa.
"I'm sorry," Bestla continued, in a more confident tone of voice. "That rumble drowned you out."
"Get rid of the goddam staff!" shouted Scarlet. "Throw it away!"
"You're the boss!" Bestla shouted gleefully as she hurled the staff.
And in a matter of seconds, before anyone could react, the staff hit Cloud directly in the head, knocking him to the ground.
The Black Materia slowly rolled out of his pocket. It moved silently an ominous a few inches before stopping.
Wasting no time, Bestla hurried over to the fallen Cloud. He was unconscious, and completely helpless.
"Kill you once, shame on me," she said with a grin as she eyed the crevice not a foot away. "Kill you twice, shame on you!"
Cloud made no attempt to escape, nor defend himself. It was an impossible task. All he could do was lay at her mercy.
It was up to Tifa. Gathering her strength and confidence, she darted towards Bestla.
It was too late.
Bestla smiled.
And she raised her leg.
And she kicked Cloud into the crevice.
He fell without making a sound.
He disappeared into the darkness.
And Cloud was gone.
"No!" cried Tifa, as she skidded to a stop a mere inch from the crevice.
Before anyone could react, Bestla quickly grabbed what she had been seeking. She confidently raised it into the air.
Tifa would have to wait to grieve. Right now, the fate of the whole world was on the fence.
"Nobody move!" shouted Bestla. "Or I'll do it!"
"Do what?!" exclaimed Rufus.
"Whatever you do," Tifa warned him, "she'll still use it."
In response, Bestla drove her foot into Tifa's stomach, sending her to her knees, wretching.
"Does anyone else have an opinion?" Bestla demanded.
"If you have to kill me," Tifa struggled through her breaths, "I won't beg for mercy. But it won't change what's about to happen."
"I've already killed you," Bestla replied. "But if you stay out this, I won't do it again. You look better when you're not a pile of dust."
Barret, meanwhile, went to help Tifa up, only causing Bestla to brandish the Black Materia.
"Don't move, anybody!" she shouted.
And then, something began to happen. The Black Materia began to raise out of her hands.
Something, or someone, else was in control.
"W-what?" Bestla exclaimed. "What the fuck is going on?"
"He is here," Hojo announced. "Look!"
Everyone looked up. The Black Materia continued to rise, independently straight toward Sephiroths's cocoon.
"He's controlling it," Tifa whispered.
The Black Materia passed quietly through the otherwise-solid wall. It went straight to Sephiroth.
But he did not react. His eyes remained closed. His arms did not try to grab anything.
He did not have to. The Black Materia stopped in front of his chest.
And it began to glow.
A dark, ominous glow.
And then, all hell began to break loose.
The cocoon that contained Sephiroth dropped and disappeared into the ground. Lightening began to appear where the cocoon had been, and pieces of the ceiling began to fall.
Rufus was the first to run, followed by Heidegger.
One by one, each Shinra disappeared into the exit, until only a few remained.
"Come on, missy!" shouted Reno as he quickly grabbed Bestla's arm and rushed her away.
"No!" cried Bestla. "I am to become a goddess!"
She attempted to free herself, but Rude grabbed her other arm, while Hojo grabbed her legs.
"It's too late," Hojo said. "Sephiroth is already at the core. He was in the right position from the start. You just spared him the task of summoning."
Tifa meanwhile, has gathered her senses and realized the danger.
"Let's go!" she shouted, running towards the exit.
"With those motherfuckers?!" Barret demanded.
"Well, we can't stay here," Yuffie pointed out as she followed the older girl.
"I have to agree!" Cait Sith shouted as he followed Yuffie, along with Cid, Red XIII, and Vincent.
A few moments later, Barret found himself on the outside deck of the Shinra 2000, though only Tifa was anywhere to be seen. He could see the surroundings change, and realized that the ship was moving. Bestla was also there, running from side to side, seemingly trying to return to the cave.
"Are you fucking stupid?!" Barret exclaimed.
Bestla ignored him, still running from side to side, trying to find a way off.
The ship soon exited the Wind Barrier. At that moment, a shockwave appeared where the cave had been, and began to advance on the Shinra 2000.
And then, the shockwave passed through the Wind Barrier with the greatest of ease, seemingly destroying it. After that, it seemed to die down, and would spare the Shinra 2000.
Tifa, in a panic, looked towards the sky, looking for something horrid to appear. But nothing did.
Instead, the ground began to shake once more.
A violet-blue fish-like creature emerged from the ground. It was huge, with the Shinra 2000 being perhaps the size of its head. Tifa had no doubt in her mind that it was a Weapon.
And then, another creature emerged from the ground. This one looked stout, plated in silver armor. No weapon could penetrate it for sure.
Tifa turned her head to see that a third creature had emerged. It was already in the air, advertising its ability to fly. For a moment, it looked as if it was ready to attack the Shinra 2000. But instead, the creature flew off.
Two final creatures emerged. One of them was green. It shot out and was visible for but a moment before disappearing into the ocean below.
The other creature was red. Looking somewhat like a giant insect, it shot for the Western Continent.
And then, Tifa felt handcuffs being slapped on her. She looked around to see Barret being cuffed as well, along with Bestla.
"Under Article 12-7 of the Public Safety Act of 0006, I'm placing you three under arrest," Rufus informed them. "You are charged with conspiracy to cause severe environmental trauma."
Bestla began to cackle. "Is that what you call that?" she taunted.
In response, Rufus raised his hand and struck, knocking her unconscious.
"I don't give a shit if mommy and daddy saw that," he replied. He then looked around the deck. "Where are the others?" he demanded.
"Gone," Reno replied.
"Not possible," Rufus dismissed. "They're hiding. Find them!"
"That's what we do best," Rude replied as he disappeared with Reno below.
"It doesn't matter whether you find them or not," Tifa said. "The damage is done. We're all going to die."
"You're right about some of us," replied Rufus as he marched off to Tifa. He then raised his hand.
And then, everything went dark.
