Chapter 49: Scary
The bridge of the Highwind was fully occupied as Vincent closely observed the ruins. Several days had passed, but the dust was still emanating from what had been Junon. Cleanup had started, as the dust on the ground was beginning to lessen. He could also see a few people moving about, both Shinra and ordinary citizens. It became surprisingly apparent that some of the citizens had survived.
"How?" asked Vincent aloud. "How could those people possibly still be alive?"
Nobody could answer until one of them figured it out.
"They were underground at the time," Cait Sith replied. "Where the wave didn't touch."
Then, to the west, Cloud noticed a submarine approaching the remains, before submerging into the waters below.
"Wasn't the harbor destroyed?" he asked.
"I guess not," Yuffie replied.
"It would make sense," Red XIII pointed out. "It was underground. Virtually everyone underground or in their basements survived."
It was a relief to everyone. The death toll had remained high, but the news that some people had survived provided some comfort.
"As did any underground buildings," Barret added.
This was somewhat troubling, as this included any weapons hidden below.
"Is it January 13th yet?" asked Yuffie, changing the subject. She was getting eager.
"Not yet," replied Cloud. "Soon enough."
"So what now?" inquired the thief.
"I have a date with Tifa," Cloud said happily.
"Another one?!" Yuffie exclaimed. "You guys are moving fast!"
"No," replied Cloud as he shook his head. "We're catching up on what was long overdue."
LATER...
The waves crashed over the beaches of Costa del Sol as Cloud stood, shirtless and in his trunks, gazing into the ocean. He then looked down and sighed at the flippers he was wearing. They looked silly, but were necessary for the pending endeavor.
Tifa stood beside him in her bikini. The "Lockheart" was still on the back of her bikini bottoms, and it was drawing some attention from some of the beach goers, but she could not care less. She was taken now.
Both of them were holding masks in their hands. They looked somewhat strange, as they were goggles attached to a mask that covered their nose an mouth, but they were essential, as they allowed them to breathe underwater.
Tifa turned to face her love and smiled. "Ready?" she asked.
Cloud nodded.
They both put their masks on and disappeared into the water.
The world underwater was beautiful. It was clear as day, giving them an excellent view of their surroundings, as well as each other. Schools of fish swam beside them. Plants grew from the ocean floor, swaying like trees against the current.
Tifa took Cloud's hand, and together they began to swim. She loved every minute of it. If was a beautiful world to explore with the man she loved. They were floating together as if it was in a dream, and they were both wearing as little as possible. It was beyond romantic. Her only regret was that their masks prevented them from kissing.
Eventually, they reached the ground. Tifa stood on her flipper-covered feet for but a moment before she felt Cloud's strong arms wrap around her from behind, resting gently on the skin of her midriff. The sensation was even more welcoming that his hand on her lower back the other day. She badly wanted to rip their masks off and kiss him, though she had to remind herself that they both needed those to live.
And then, Tifa noticed an opening in the rock wall. Beyond it was darkness. It was a cave. Ever adventurous, she pointed to the entrance.
Cloud looked at Tifa as if to say: "How are we going to see in there?"
Tifa quickly pressed her mask, and her goggles lit up.
Satisfied, Cloud switched on his own mask, swam to the mouth of the cave and followed his explorer girlfriend in.
The cave was small. With rocky walls and a sandy ground, it was about twelve feet high and twenty feet both long and wide. There were no fish swimming about, nor any plants growing. It seemed completely empty.
And then, right in the center, there was something.
Tifa swam over to the object and began to study it. It almost looked like a stone carrot with thorns coming out. Slowly, she reached down for it.
Cloud feared it might be stinging coral or a lamprey, and he began to swim towards his love with the intention of stopping her. By the time he reached her, she already had it in her hands.
It was most certainly man-made. It was one of the strangest objects either of them had seen, but it was certainly artificial. This was a big discovery.
ON THE SURFACE...
Cloud and Tifa removed their masks and dropped them. Tifa continued to study the stick she was holding before realizing her attention should be on the handsome, shirtless man she was with.
"Come here!" she commanded as she placed her hands on his shoulders and kissed him. Their tongues met as she ran her hands up and down his bare back.
And then, she directed her own attention to the strange object she had found.
"I've never seen anything like this," Tifa said. "This isn't just any kind of coral."
She paused. She knew she had seen similar material somewhere , but she was hesitant to mention it. He seemed so happy. The last thing she wanted to do was spoil it. But...
"The only place I've ever seen anything like this was..."
"The Forgotten Capital," Cloud finished.
He then became silent as he looked into the beach. His lips became thin, and his eyes became troubled.
Tifa regretted mentioning that, and almost wanted to kick herself in the butt for it.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I shouldn't have brought that place up on a date."
"It's not that," Cloud assured her. He then squinted briefly before turned to her. "It's just that I don't think this is Costa del Sol we came up at."
Tifa looked at him skeptically. "Where else would it be?" she asked.
"I think this is Costa del Luna," Cloud continued as he looked at her with some embarrassment in his eyes.
Her eyes began to form the same look. "You mean the much smaller and lesser-known resort that's clothing..."
Tifa's eyes beheld something she had never seen before. There were people of all ages, shapes, and sizes from one end of the beach to the other. A few were topless. Even fewer were bottomless. But the vast majority were naked from head to toe.
"...optional," she finished.
"Yeah," Cloud sheepishly added as he reached for his mask. "I think it's time to..."
"Vamoose?" the blushing Tifa suggested.
"No, no," Cloud said. "Hold on."
"What?" asked Tifa.
"Look who it is," he said.
She looked through the naked bathers before she spotted them. Tseng was as naked as the day he was born, while Elena was more comfortable in her thong. She was topless, though, and quite a few other beach goers began to stare.
Of course, their attention was focused on the obvious oddity to the situation.
"Didn't he die?" asked Tifa.
"That's what I thought," Cloud replied. "At least what Elena said back at Icicle Inn made me think he did."
The two loves left the sand and began to folic and kiss in the water. But it was Tseng's chest that got the attention.
"He's got no scars," Cloud observed.
"Should he have?" his girlfriend asked.
"He got stabbed by Sephiroth back at the temple," Cloud continued. "We saw it."
At first, both of them though that the vision they had seen back at the temple was an illusion he had generated, possibly so they would not attack him.
And then, Cloud realized an alternative explanation.
"He beat the timeline," he said. "The same way Jessie did."
"He found a way to take a sword through him without getting hurt?" Tifa asked skeptically. "That's a new one."
"It would appear so," Cloud suggested. "But how?"
"You know," began Tifa, "maybe it was some kind of a spell or Materia."
"It's possible," Cloud agreed. "I mean, I've never heard of anything like it, but..."
"Um, Cloud," interrupted Tifa.
He could already see what she was trying to warn him about.
Elena had stopped snogging Tseng, and was now was looking directly at Cloud and Tifa.
They quickly put their masks back on before disappearing under the water.
At that moment, the naked Tseng decided to address the issue.
"Elena, what's wrong?" he asked.
"Nothing," she replied as she shook her head. "I thought I saw Rufus and Hojo spying on us."
Tseng was immediately alarmed.
"Are you sure it was them?" he asked.
Elena shook her head again. "Doubt it," she replied. "I don't have my contacts in, so everything's blurry." She then put her arm around Tseng. "Besides, why would Hojo wear a bikini?"
MEANWHILE...
The Urchin floated softly above the barrier that covered the Northern Crater. Bestla gazed at the barrier from the bridge. This was her destination. This was where she would absorb all the Lifestream and become a goddess. But first, she needed to eliminate the current occupant. And before that...
"What are we doing here?" Nara asked.
"This is the barrier," Bestla replied. "Sephiroth is below. This is where everything leads up to."
"So we're going to wait here for the cannon to destroy the barrier, and then go inside?"
Bestla shook her head. "The canon was destroyed along with Junon," she replied. "We're using an orb to destroy it."
"I'm ready," Nara announced.
"Not today," Bestla dismissed. "If we go for him today, Cloud will come after us."
"What are we going to do, then?" asked Nara.
"We'll wait," Bestla replied. "Until we destroy them. I know how we can do it all at once."
Nara shuddered. There was only one way to eliminate them all at the same time. She hoped she was wrong.
THAT NIGHT...
"What do you think it's for?" asked Tifa as she left the strange object on the night table in her cabin.
They had changed back into their regular clothes and were preparing to head out shortly.
"I'm trying to remember," Cloud replied as they left the cabin. "This looks familiar."
"Now that you mention it," Tifa added as they approached the sealed door, "I think we did have a use for that in the old timeline. But I haven't got all my memories back yet."
"Neither have I," Cloud began, "but-"
Suddenly, the sealed door lit up. It caused them both to stop abruptly.
"DNA pattern recognized," a computerized voice suddenly announced. "Welcome back, Mr. President."
The sealed door opened.
"Okay, that's weird," Cloud said.
Cautiously, both of them peeked inside.
Inside was a cabin. It had two stories, the higher one being a balcony, with a bed and a television set. The lower level had a sofa and a door that presumably let to a bathroom.
Both intruders were amazed.
"This must be Rufus' personal cabin," Cloud observed.
"How did the Highwind mistake your DNA for his?" asked Tifa.
"It's obviously got a bug," he replied. "We may as well make the most of it."
The two continued to scan the room. It was amazing that they had no idea it existed.
"I know!" Tifa announced suddenly. "Let's stay in and watch scary movies in here. Just like when we were kids."
Cloud remembered that all to well. It was tempting. It was a comfortable atmosphere. But he groaned and shook his head. He was willing to, but...
"Why not?" asked Tifa playfully.
"Because you'd always say 'boo' or try to scare me some other way when something scary is about to happen!" he retorted in the same manner.
She grinned even more, with a devilish look on her face.
"Your point being?" she asked before turning and walking toward the television.
LATER THAT NIGHT...
Cloud and Tifa were on the bed, laying on their stomachs and facing the television. They ended up watching not one, but two scary movies. Sure enough, she would scare him every time something scary happened.
Cloud never minded. There were a couple of times he planned to scare her, but she had always beaten him to the job. He still loved every minute of it. Even during the hardest times, Tifa knew how to make him feel better.
After the second movie ended, Tifa became very quiet. She clicked off the television and got up.
"You okay?" asked Cloud.
"I'm fine," Tifa replied. "Just thinking."
She stood with her back to him for a few moments, running her hands through her hair. Then, she made her request.
"Cloud," she began, "we couldn't kiss before."
"Before?" asked Cloud as he got up himself. "When?"
"That way you held me when we reached the ocean floor...could you hold me that way again?"
Cloud smiled, knowing exactly what she meant. He approached his love from behind and gently rested his hand on her midriff and over her belly button.
Tifa took her hand and rested it on his. It lasted but a few moments where she could no longer contain herself. She turned, wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed him.
As their tongues met, he ran his hand down her shoulders and placed it on the uncovered small of Tifa's back.
In response, she placed her hands on his shoulders, gripping the exposed skin as she continued to kiss him deeply, savoring every moment of it.
Cloud suddenly broke the kiss. He then kissed her cheek, and began to make his way downward. He kissed her neck, and what she did next caught him by surprise.
She moaned.
It was the sexiest sound he had ever heard her make.
As he remained at her neck, sparks began to fly inside of him. He caressed her with both of his hands. He was beginning to feel it. They had spent the day together wearing little. Seeing all those naked people, especially Elena wearing nothing but a thong, didn't help, either. Cloud was feeling endless urges. He felt the urge to place his hands on her backside through her skirt and squeeze it. He also felt the urge to kiss his way down to her breasts and bury his head in them.
Then, he decided to do what he had seen them do in the movies; it would be a reasonable start. He gripped the bottom of Tifa's shirt with both of his hands.
And he started to lift it.
She raised her arms into the air in acceptance.
And then, she remembered.
"Wait, stop!" she shouted as she threw her arms down to stop him, smacking both of his forearms at once.
She then backed to a neutral distance.
"What's wrong?" Cloud asked, ignoring the pain he felt where she had smacked him.
"I'm sorry," Tifa apologized in a broken voice. Tears quickly welled up in her eyes, and she turned and ran.
"Tifa, wait," Cloud pleaded.
But she was out the door.
He ran out the door himself. There was no sign of her.
Of course, that did not mean that he was unable to find her.
The door to her cabin was wide open. Tifa was laying in the fetal position with her back turned to him, shaking as she sobbed.
"Tifa?" he called. It broke him to see her in such a state.
"I'm sorry," she sobbed. "I ruined it." She felt as if she could just crawl up into a hole and die.
"No, Tifa," Cloud dismissed as he closed the door behind him. He pulled up a chair, sat down, and began to rub her shoulder lovingly.
"I screwed up," she sobbed.
"It was me," he insisted, feeling guilty. "If I was moving to fast, I'm sorry."
"You weren't," she replied, as she turned to face him. "I want it as much as you do."
"But?" asked Cloud.
"I did promise my mom," she said as she sat up. "I promised her I wouldn't have sex with anyone unless I was married to him. I promised her right before she died."
Cloud nodded.
"Nobody has seen me naked but me behind closed doors," she continued. "I'm really sorry, Cloud. I can't. Not while I'm unmarried." She then extended her left hand. "That's what this ring is about. I'm a virgin. And I have to live up to the promise I made." She lowered her hand and looked CLoud in the eyes. "I know you're upset. I probably should have told you earlier, before we kissed."
She gave him a sad look. She fully expected him to tell her that it would not work, or that they should go back to just being friends. And it would be her fault.
But, instead, he look her hand in his, and smiled at her.
"It's not all about sex," Cloud said. "I'm okay with it."
Tifa almost gasped in surprise. She was certain he would not be.
"Really?" she asked.
"Really," he replied. "I love you for who you are."
He then kissed her forehead.
"Sorry for being such a prude," she apologized. "I ruined the night."
"Why would I regard you as a prude?" Cloud asked. "Especially after..."
FLASHBACK...
Back when Cloud was seven and Tifa was six, the latter had a swing set in her backyard. They would play together on it almost every day. Most days would not be memorable; they would play the same games and go home after a few hours.
But this particular day, things would be different.
"Hey Cloud," Tifa began all of a sudden. "I have a new word."
"What is it?" he asked.
"Asshole," she replied softly.
"Asshole?" he repeated. "I never heard it before."
"Shhh!" Tifa reprimanded. "Don't say it too loud! That's the baddest word in the world!"
"Oh," said Cloud sheepishly. He had thought "poop" was the worst thing that could be said.
"But if you say it and pull on your tongue," Tifa continued, "you can make it sound like 'apple.'"
Cloud tried it.
He tried it that night in front of Claudia and got a scolding.
TWO DAYS LATER...
Cloud and Tifa were sitting on the swings again. It was the former's first time outdoors in two days, as punishment for what he had said earlier.
"So Tifa," he began. "any other bad words that will get me grounded?"
She giggled. "Just piss, dick, asshole, and the f curse."
Cloud's eyes narrowed.
"What's the f curse?" he asked.
"I'm not going to tell you," Tifa said. "Because you'll say it to your mom."
"Please?" he begged.
She shook her head.
"Is it fart?" Cloud asked.
The defeated Tifa laughed. He was not going to give up.
"No. It's fu..."
She paused a long time.
Cloud continued to wait for the whole word.
"...ck," she finally finished. "Don't tell anyone I taught you that!"
...END FLASHBACK
"I was so bad!" Tifa giggled. "Of course, I learned it all from my dad."
Cloud smiled. Then his face became serious.
"You're not a prude, Tifa. And I respect what matters to you."
She cautiously looked at him. "Really?"
"Really," Cloud replied. "We've gone twenty years without having sex and it didn't kill us. You need to do what you feel is right."
Tifa wrapped her arms around her love and hugged him tightly. She could not describe how relieved she felt.
"Oh Cloud, I love you so much," she whispered. She then backed so she could see his face. "We can still sleep together," she said. "We can even spoon. We just need to wear pajamas. And I can only change clothes behind closed doors."
"That's fine," Cloud assured her.
Tifa smiled.
A few minutes later, that was what happened. She was in his arms, nestled against his chest, wearing a set of beautiful blue pajamas.
Cloud found it amusing, as she wore more to bed than she did during the day.
And soon, they were both fast asleep.
