Chapter Five

As Vincent approached Cid’s door he thought about what the pilot would be doing at that very moment. He smirked as he pictured nothing even remotely clean in nature. His mischievous side sparked inspiration within him as he burst through the door, without knocking. At the sudden sound of Vincent’s intrusion, Cid bolted upright, a conclusive sign of guilt. Vincent played it off as cool though, simply because he had a strategy and he wasn’t quite ready to drive Cid wild yet.

“Cid, is your offer of transportation still good?”

“Uh…I…yeah?”

Cid was obviously flustered, and his pants suspiciously tight. While Vincent hadn’t strictly planned any mal-intent, he was finding it much more difficult than expected not to tease the pilot.

“Good. Cloud and I need to get to Nibelheim.”

“Uh…”

“Thanks. Cid, are you alright? You look a little flushed.”

“I’m…uh…yeah.”

“Yeah you’re flushed, or yeah you’re alright?”

“Yeah.”

Vincent sauntered over to the trembling man, and with a hand pressed firmly on his chest, pushed him against the wall, following to stand more than a few inches into his personal space. Cid could feel the gunman’s breath ghost warmly over his ear and cheek, tickling as Vincent spoke, soft and deeply into his ear.

“Do I make you nervous Cid? Do I make you…tremble?”

The only thing Cid could manage in reply to the huskily pressed questions was a feeble and barely audible squeak. His inability to communicate in any way was completely uncharacteristic and the fact that he could have such an effect on the pilot drove Vincent wild. As he drew away from Cid, Vincent gave a small and knowing smirk. He made an equally dramatic exit as he strutted quickly out of the room, slamming the door in his wake, leaving Cid to stutter to his hearts content as the shocked man slowly slid down the wall. He recovered a few minutes later, though remained a good deal shaken up from the whole encounter. His thoughts raced and mixed and dispersed themselves so much his head began to ache.

He knows. How can he know? He does. He can’t. But he does. What was he doing? Does he know? Shit. Fuck. Damn. I have to think. I can’t think. You can think. Stop thinking and make up your mind. Cid…Nibelheim…ride…Vincent…Cloud…Cloud…wait…Cloud? Shit! They can’t be? Are they? Why would they both…? NO!

With that final thought Cid bolted upright and ran to Cloud’s room. Much like Vincent had, he burst through Cloud’s door with no warning, finding a relaxed and melancholy Cloud looking up at him from a chair. He neither reprimanded Cid for his intrusion, nor asked him what it was he sought.

“You’re going to Nibelheim with Vincent.”

Cid hadn’t asked Cloud a question, but waited for a response nonetheless.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Uh…because I live there.”

“I thought you lived with Tifa.”

“…no.”

“…”

“…”

“Why Nibelheim?”

“Vincent offered.”

“Why?”

“Because he did. Cid, what did you come here for?”

“Just confirming.”

“Oh, ok…wait, what?”

Before Cloud had a chance to coerce Cid into telling him why he had just been interrogated, he was gone. Unfazed, Cloud went back to brooding. What he didn’t know, wouldn’t hurt him. That was his weekly mantra. His daily mantra was simply, “I have no idea what’s going on.” Both seemed perfectly applicable to his situation. He didn’t know, so it wouldn’t hurt him, so he didn’t need to care any more about it.

Cid decided that before he came to any more conclusions or took any more actions, what he really needed was a good night’s sleep. If nothing else, sleep would offer him some respite from his rather oppressive thoughts. By the time his head hit the pillow he had deduced three things: One, he would be taking Vincent and Cloud to Nibelheim the following day, two, Vincent and Cloud were living together, and three, both one and two made his heart ache.
