Rinoa woke up the next morning groggy, and a little sore, (^.^) but relaxed. Contrary to popular belief that the prince was an absolute animal in bed, Squall was always a very gentle lover. He is very intense, very passionate, but gentle all the same. She always slept for a long time after, a smile never leaving her face. Today was no different, however when she woke up he wasn’t there, he stayed a majority of the time, but sometimes he left to “give her space”. Even then he never wandered far.
a heavy silence followed by an eerie calm set in. even if he didn’t stay, he always left her some way to find him. But this time, she found nothing that would even indicate he had been there at all. Not to mention it was 4 in the afternoon. Where was everybody else? She could usually hear the SABERS training outside on the balconies, but was only met with silence.
The oppressive silence disturbed her. She slid out of bed and put on a robe she had hanging from their closet door. As she picked up the hanger and turned around to tie the sash, an odd rustling sound caused her to whip around, ultima spell at the ready. Inside her closet was empty save for their work clothes. She flipped the switch but nothing happened. This distracted her and caused her to forget about looking inside. It was a deep closet, but rarely used. She closed the doors, unaware of what lie within and turned to look around the room for the source. Only empty silence stood. No monsters, no enemies, nothing at all…
‘You’re tired; relax. Nothing’s there. ’, She told herself.
As she walked over to her bed to pick up her slippers from under it, two spindly vines quietly pushed open the doors and reached out from the closet behind her. From deep within the closet something began to move. The skittering of its feet was silent on the closet’s carpeted floor. A distended green stomach emerged from the darkness, followed by a red and yellow maw. A faint gurgle could be heard coming from inside the stomach; it was hungry. It lowered it vines from the door and sent them towards Rinoa. They crept along the floor and raised to attack, they would’ve succeeded had a shot not rung out killing the creature in the closet.
Rinoa heard a screech of pain, then ducked and turned in the direction of the shot. Irvine had entered and killed something he couldn’t see in a split second, ‘no wonder he’s a SeeD’, Rinoa thought. His face usually warm and happy, was deathly serious, further outlined by a trail matted blood descending from his temple. He was breathing heavy and fell to one knee clutching his left side, which like his face was bleeding. He dropped Exeter as he did so, its loud “thud” audible down the hallway.
“CURAGA!” Rinoa shouted. And her hands created a blue aura that surrounded the cowboy. And as the healing power of curaga enveloped him, Irvine couldn’t prevent the long groan he made as he felt life flowing back into him. He fell to both of his knees sucking in air. Rinoa ran over to him and held him close to her. His face pressed against her breast.
“What happened?” She asked him. Lowering his head onto her lap.
“Somebody let out the monsters again… like what happened with NORG.”
“Do you know who?”
“We don’t know who they are exactly… but they call themselves…. “The KHA’AK”. It’s tagged all over the training area.” A pained groan caused him to hold his heart.
“Where’s everybody else?”
she asked sharply, a hint of fear in her voice.
“The SABERS are holding the quad, infirmary, and the dorms. Squall and I managed to secure the, library and the training center. Zell is guarding the dorms, garage, and cafeteria.”
He managed to stand up and pick up his gun.
But he still needed to lean against the wall.
“I don’t know where Quistis and Seifer are. Selphie and Xu are with the children on the second floor. We’re trying to radio the Ragnorok to fly in and pick up the kids from either the quad or if it’s too dangerous from the classroom itself. But I don’t think it’s going to work, the power is out. Those punks cut it somehow. We can’t make announcements or organize our efforts. So unless all the SeeDs get together, Garden is finished. I came to get you because I thought you might’ve needed help.”
He nodded toward the plant like monster he killed upon entering the room.
“Looks like I was right.” He squinted at it, “That’s a grat isn’t it? Wonder how it got in here.
She turned around and was caught in the throes of terror. She had forgotten all about it, and did all she could to hold back a scream. She grabbed Irvine’s jacket and pulled him to her. He held her and told her it was ok; it was dead. Its corpse was sprawled out across her floor, partly covered by parts of the door Irvine blew off. The tentacle like vines were leaking black fluid and started withering rapidly
That creature’s gaping maw only emphasized its plant like appearance. It had no face to speak of aside from the Venus flytrap mouth. Its body was deep and wide. It had a very cauldron like body. Thin pointy legs, like a spider’s, supported it. The wound Irvine had inflicted was quite severe, seeing as half the monsters torso was missing, forming a sideways moon shape. Purplish-blue muck oozed from the hole in its body. Rinoa shuddered and looked away.
“Where are we now, Irvine?” Rinoa asked, inching away from the fetid corpse.
“We pulled out of FH about 2 hours ago.” Deep breath.
“So we’re stranded?” She asked, understandably concerned.
“Yea pretty much. I don’t have any idea how we’re going to fix this mess.”
“If the garden has no power, how come we haven’t sunk?”
“This thing’s like an ocean liner, no way it could sink on its own, and the propellers run on an independent circuit.”
“Uh-huh” she said half listening. Her thoughts never leaving Squall.
She suddenly had an idea that needed voicing. Grabbing Irvine’s hand she asked,
“Irvine, how bad is it out there?”
“Bad would be an improvement. It's a war zone out there. Bodies everywhere. The school is littered with dead SeeDs, SABERS, and monsters; even some of the little ones who couldn’t get away in time are dead. It’s war. It’s hell. Nothing else comes close.”
Irvine's confirmation of her worst fear filled her with both terror and exhilaration. The garden was in chaos, and she didn’t know what to do. But she knew she could be of use, instead of being a burden like she usually was.
She had never liked to fight, but Squall wouldn’t hear any of that and trained her. She could easily take down Seifer and managed to kill a berserker Wendigo alone. She'd have to fight, but Squall could be in trouble and might need her help. So she sucked up all the courage she could and grabbed Irvine’s shoulder. And as confidently as she could, breathed
“Well then, lets go.”
“Not like that.” Irvine laughed, pointing out her less than battle ready attire, “I’ll step out…”
Embarrassed she said, “No, no, stay. Just no funny business you.”
“Scouts honor” then the cowboy smiled his teeth twinkling smile and saluted.
As she got dressed, a series of loud bangs and clawing were heard at the door. Irvine turned and aimed his rifle at the door. Nothing attacked but sounds of fighting and the roar of a very large t-rexaur could be heard outside. When she was done. Irvine was amazed, punctuating his thoughts with a long whistle.
She ditched her blue duster for an outfit similar to Squall's but clearly made for a girl. She wore a midriff style white tank to match the short jacket. The angel wing design on the back of her jacket stood out prominently Low-rise leather pants, tucked into high boots. And finally three belts and a new gauntlet for her shooting star. She tucked her griever into her shirt, cocked her shooting star, pointed at the door and quietly mouthed, ‘lets go.’
The dorm’s door slid open and Irvine went first. He blasted a Grendel that tried to leap out at him. He then broke into a run down the hallway, Rinoa quickly followed. The two mowed their way to the main corridor, killing countless beasts. They entered the circular hallway and saw like Irvine had said, bodies everywhere. Monsters impaled with swords and burned with magic. Men and women were lying crumpled all along the ground; and there was blood everywhere. The sight of a little girl floating facedown in the reflecting pools caused Rinoa to vomit. When she composed herself again a T-rexaur came stomping through the hall. A flurry of ear splitting roars caused the SeeDs to buckle. As the ancient beast prepared to strike, a series of pounding sounds, like a bat against car door began to echo, and the dino’s head jerked violently every time.
After one particularly nasty hit, it had enough and tried to run away. But as it turned to flee, a ball of flame rocketed towards the dino and hit it so hard it did a back flip. When the t-rexaur landed it did so with such a thud the garden bobbed in the ocean.
“BOOYA!” a voiced boomed seemingly everywhere.
“Zell! Where are you?” they asked in unison.
“Right here guys.” His voice was close, and they both jumped when they saw him appear before their eyes. It was as if he just emerged out of thin air. He laughed uproariously at their surprise and slapped his knee. Then Realizing she was safe he opened his arms out wide and Rinoa jumped into them laughing too.
“I’m so glad you’re ok!” Zell shouted, hugging Rinoa.
