One week later, Sephiroth found himself standing before Cloud’s door, warring with himself. The blonde was to have met him for breakfast, and had never showed. Sephiroth was certain there was a good explanation, but he couldn’t help but worry--after a week, was Cloud already tired of him? Did the blonde believe he’d made a mistake in giving himself to Sephiroth? Something within Sephiroth twisted fearfully with the thought.
No, Sephiroth told himself firmly. You know that’s not the case. Are you sure? a little voice nagged in the back of his mind. Sephiroth ruthlessly silenced the voice and concentrated instead on the worry he felt. If Cloud hadn’t come to breakfast, then something was wrong, and it was that thought that had driven him out of the officer’s mess and across the compound to the barracks. Now, however, he was afraid to knock on the door. What if Cloud was tired of him? This is ridiculous, he hissed inwardly. He’d won an entire war for President Shinra, why should he be afraid to knock on a door? He lifted his hand and rapped sharply on the hard wood. There was a moment of nothing, and then Sephiroth heard movement beyond the door, and a second later it was opened a crack. A dark brown eye peered out at him from the crack, and Sephiroth hid a smirk when he saw that eye widen slightly with surprise. The door opened wider to reveal a SOLDIER Second Class. Sephiroth guessed him to be around Cloud’s age, and he stood nearly as tall as Sephiroth. His crew-cut hair was carrot orange and his nose and cheeks were peppered with freckles. He would have looked like a young kid were it not for his well toned musculature. The kid obviously liked to spend most of his free time in the weight room--the muscles on his upper arms were nearly big around as Sephiroth’s calves. The redhead snapped to attention and saluted Sephiroth. “Sir!” “At ease,” Sephiroth said quietly. “Your name?” “Andrew Talos, sir!” Andrew relaxed a little. The SOLDIER stepped back a little and indicated with a hand that Sephiroth should come in, if wanted. Sephiroth stepped into the room and closed the door behind himself. It had been a long time since he’d seen the inside of the dorms, and he’d forgotten how very small the rooms were. There were two desks against one wall, a double chest of drawers beneath the window on the outside wall beneath the windows, and a set of bunk beds against the third. The top bunk was neatly made, but the bottom one . . .Sephiroth’s breath caught as he took in the sight of Cloud sprawled out on the bunk and sleeping soundly. The blankets had fallen away a bit, and his golden chest and a hint of a hip were exposed to Sephiroth’s sight. He frowned a little and turned his head to the side to address Cloud’s roommate. “Is he ill?” Sephiroth asked. In his short experience, Cloud was a light sleeper. The knock on the door should have woken him instantly. “No, sir,” Andrew said. He smiled slightly. “Just very tired. He had his first set of tests in his classes yesterday, and he was exhausted when he finished. He came right home after dinner last night and passed out. He sleeps pretty heavily when he’s that tired. I think he forgot to set his alarm last night, and normally I’d wake him up, but I figured with break starting today that it wouldn’t really matter if I let him sleep.” “You know him well?” Sephiroth asked. His gaze rested on Cloud’s sleeping form again. Cloud’s breaths were coming slow and even, and his expression was peaceful. “We’ve been roommates ever since we both started academy,” Andrew said with a shrug. “Before he made First Class we spent a lot of time hanging out. Not so much now that we’ve got different schedules and such, but he’s always been a good friend. When he made First Class he opted to stay in the dorms so I wouldn’t have to deal with getting a new room-mate.” “Did he now?” Sephiroth murmured. The more he learned about Cloud, the more Sephiroth felt that he might not deserve to have the blonde angel in his life. Cloud was perfect, in word and deed, and it overwhelmed Sephiroth at times. “Sir, is there something you needed?” Andrew asked. Sephiroth turned his full attention on Cloud’s room-mate and offered the man a wry smile. “We were supposed to have breakfast together this morning. He’s never not shown before, so I was a little worried.” Andrew frowned. “I’m sorry sir. I should have woken him.” Sephiroth shook his head slightly. “You had no way of knowing.” Sephiroth wasn’t sure if he should be troubled by that or not. Cloud had said that he wasn’t ashamed of their relationship, but he found it odd that Andrew didn’t seem to know about it at all, especially if he and Cloud were as close as Andrew seemed to think they were. His fears were laid to rest when Andrew gave him a wry smile. “I should have guessed, though,” Andrew said. He was blushing slightly now. “I mean, every time he’s called to say that he wasn’t going to be home this week it was because he was staying with you.” Sephiroth felt his soul warm at the news, and he found himself grinning at Andrew. “Did he now?” “Yes, sir,” Andrew said with a chuckle. “He’ll probably kill me for choosing today to not wake him, too.” “I promise to not let him,” Sephiroth said with a laugh. The sound must have penetrated Cloud’s subconscious, because the blonde suddenly shifted on the bed and sighed. Sephiroth held his breath, and a moment later Cloud lifted a hand to rub at his eyes before he opened them. “Andrew? What time is it?” Cloud’s voice was rough with sleep, a low rumble that did interesting things to Sephiroth’s insides. “Nearly eleven,” Andrew said. Cloud seemed to digest the answer for a moment, and then he sat bolt upright. His head contacted with the frame of the upper bunk with a metallic thud and he swore sharply. “Damn it!” Cloud hissed. His hand rubbed at his bruised head and he growled. “Why didn’t you wake me up? I was supposed to have breakfast with Sephiroth this morning!” “Because you were tired, idiot, and you needed the sleep,” Andrew replied calmly. “And you neglected to tell me about the breakfast thing.” “Shit!” Cloud sighed and turned his head to look at Andrew. “Good morning, Cloud,” Sephiroth drawled. Cloud’s mouth snapped shut and he blushed. Andrew snickered. “Oh, yeah. Forgot to mention that the General was here.” Cloud glared at Andrew. “Bastard.” Andrew laughed. “My parents were married, thank you very much.” The SOLDIER went over to his desk. It was then that Sephiroth noticed that he must have interrupted Andrew in the midst of packing. There was an open duffel bag on the desk, and Andrew stuffed a shaving kit into it before zipping it shut. “I’m outta here, Cloud. Gotta catch the morning transport to Gongaga--going to spend the week with my sister and her family.” “Have fun,” Cloud said with a smile. “Give your sister a hug for me, and bring me back a cinnamon roll, if you think about it.” Andrew grinned. “I’ll bring back two--one for you and one for the General here. Can I tell her what a lucky bastard you are, or is it a secret?” “It’s not a secret,” Cloud replied without a moment of hesitation. “And I’m the lucky one,” Sephiroth said, feeling that he really needed to set the record straight. “Yes, yes you are,” Andrew agreed. He looked at Cloud again. “You going to go see your mother this week?” “Yeah,” Cloud said. “We’re leaving this afternoon.” Andrew grinned hard and looked at Sephiroth. “You are so lucky. That woman is an incredible cook.” He shouldered the duffel. “Later, Cloud.” He turned and saluted Sephiroth before leaving the room. “I’m sorry for missing breakfast,” Cloud said after the door closed behind Andrew. Sephiroth stalked to the bed and sat on the edge of it. He ducked beneath the top bunk and pressed a kiss to Cloud’s lips. “I forgive you,” he murmured. “Your room-mate is nice.” “Yeah,” Cloud said. He tilted his head back and pressed a kiss to Sephiroth’s jaw. “We’ve been friends for almost as long as Zack and I have been.” “You told him,” Sephiroth murmured. He kissed Cloud again, not quite able to get enough of the feel of those lips beneath his own. Cloud emitted a huff of laughter. “Yeah, well, after listening to me talk about you for four years, I figured he had the right to know. You don’t have to worry about him, Seph. Andrew would never spread rumors about us.” “I’m not worried,” Sephiroth replied. He nuzzled the blonde’s cheek and then drew away a little. “I don’t care what other people say or think . . . unless of course they’re saying bad things about you. I’m afraid I’d have to do harm then.” Cloud laughed. “I can take care of myself, you know. I did last ten minutes against you!” “I want a rematch,” Sephiroth purred. “You sure?” Cloud leaned forward and playfully nipped at Sephiroth’s jaw. “I might last even longer this time. I’ve been training fairly hard in my classes. It wouldn’t do for the Great General to be upstaged by an ordinary SOLDIER . . .” Sephiroth silenced him with a deep kiss. Cloud gasped softly, and Sephiroth took the opening. He slid his tongue between Cloud’s lips and thoroughly plundered the blonde’s mouth. Cloud was breathless when they broke the kiss, and Sephiroth pressed their foreheads together and smiled. “There’s nothing ordinary about you, SOLDIER First Class Strife,” Sephiroth murmured. He lifted a hand and stroked his fingers across Cloud’s blushing cheek. “You must be hungry. It’s nearly lunch time now. Why don’t you pack and then let me take you back to my apartment? I’ll make you something to eat while we’re waiting for Zack to finish packing.” Cloud’s smile was soft and content, and he nodded an affirmative. ****** Five hours later they were on a transport en route to Nibelheim. Cloud sat next to Sephiroth, and Zack sat facing them. The trip had been fairly uneventful, and it would only be another fifteen minutes before they landed at the Shinra airstrip that was located just outside the village. Cloud was infused with a nervous excitement--it had been nearly six months since he’d last been home, and he was really looking forward to seeing his childhood home again. At the same time, he was nervous as to how his mother would react when he told her about his relationship with Sephiroth. Cloud was fairly certain his mother suspected he was gay, but they’d never really talked about it before, and he’d most definitely never brought a boyfriend home before! “Nervous?” Sephiroth murmured. “A little,” Cloud confessed. “I’ve never really discussed my orientation with mom. I think she suspects, but this is the first time I will have ever brought anyone home that wasn’t just a friend.” “Will she be angry?” “No, I don’t think so,” Cloud said after a moment of thought. “She might be surprised, and I probably should have warned her, but I chickened out when I called her last week.” Sephiroth took his hand and entwined their fingers. “I’m sure it will be fine,” Sephiroth whispered. He lifted Cloud’s hand and brushed a kiss across his knuckles. Cloud pointedly ignored the grin Zack was wearing. “Oh, and I should warn you about Tifa,” Cloud said. “Tifa?” “Yeah,” Cloud said. “She’s been my friend since we were five years old, and well, she’s really affectionate with me.” Sephiroth arched a brow, as if to say “do tell.” Cloud smirked. “She’s going to squeal like a school girl when she realizes we’re together. She’s been listening to me pine for you for years now.” He glanced at Zack. “She’ll probably kiss you for getting us together.” Zack grinned. “Is she cute?” Cloud laughed. “Yes, very.” “Even better!” Zack exclaimed. “You mess with her and I’ll kick your ass,” Cloud dead-panned. “You and what army?” Zack said. “And what if she likes me?” “I’ll still kick your ass,” Cloud said. The threat lost some of its effectiveness when he laughed. “Just be nice, eh?” “I’m always nice to the ladies,” Zack exclaimed. Cloud rolled his eyes. “That’s what I’m afraid of.” ***** He’d barely gotten off the plane and taken two steps when he heard her. “CLOUD!!!” It was all Cloud could do to brace himself before he was tackled by an extremely excited and enthusiastic Tifa Lockheart. Cloud dropped his duffel bag, wrapped his arms around her waist and swept her into an embrace. Her arms went around his neck and she hugged him so hard it threatened to cut off his air supply. He lifted her off her feet and spun her around. Her long dark hair fanned out around them, and Cloud laughed and kissed her on the cheek. “Tifa! How are you?” He set her on her feet and grinned down at her. She was, without a doubt, his closest and best friend. They’d met in kindergarten. Cloud had been painfully shy--even more so than now--and she had befriended him when the other children chose to tease him. They’d been practically attached at the hip throughout grade and high school. Cloud had taken her to both the junior and senior prom, even though, by then, it had become obvious that Cloud wasn’t into girls like that. “Much better, now that you’re home!” she exclaimed. She hugged him again before stepping away. “Look at you! You’re not scrawny anymore!” She giggled as she reached out to wrap her fingers around one of his muscular biceps. Her grip only made it two thirds of the way around. Cloud laughed. “Neither are you,” he teased. She’d always been a bit of a tomboy, and Cloud suspected that would never change. She wore a tank top that didn’t leave much to the imagination, and it left her arms bare. It was pretty obvious that she was still working out on a regular basis, and the last time he’d talked to her she had just begun martial arts training. Her arms were finely toned, and even with the t-shirt it was obvious that the same could be said of her belly and abs. Even more obvious were her feminine curves--she’d turned into a woman while he’d been away. He gave into the urge to hug her again. “Not that I’m not happy to see you, but why are you here?” “Your mom called and asked me to meet your plane,” Tifa said. “She had a few last minute things she wanted to do around the house before you brought your friends. And speaking of which. . .” Tifa’s voice trailed off as she glanced over Cloud’s shoulder. Cloud knew she was seeing Sephiroth descending the stairs from the transport. Her brown eyes grew wide, and her jaw went slack. “Cloud, is that the General??” Cloud couldn’t help but grin. “Yeah, that’s him.” “Is he one of the friends staying with your mom this week?” Tifa asked. Cloud could see that she was putting two and two together, and her eyes were starting to gleam with excitement. “Yeah,” Cloud said, still grinning. “He’s more than a friend, isn’t he?” She asked in a conspiratorial tone. Cloud nodded slightly, and as he had predicted, she squealed with delight. “That’s so cool!” She tackled him again and hugged him hard. “I knew you could do it!” she whispered in his ear. “Now introduce me, already!” Cloud slid his arm around her waist and turned round just in time to watch Sephiroth step off the stairs and onto the tarmac. Sephiroth smiled warmly at them as he approached. He dropped his duffel next to Cloud’s and extended a hand towards Tifa. “You must be Tifa,” Sephiroth said. Tifa grinned and took Sephiroth’s hand into her own and shook it. “Yeah, that’s me! You must be General Sephiroth.” “The one, the only,” Zack quipped as he joined them. “And you are?” Tifa asked with a giggle. “A pain in the ass,” Sephiroth supplied helpfully. Cloud laughed. “Tifa, this is Zack.” Zack took Tifa’s hand and shook it. “It’s good to meet you. We’ve heard a lot about you.” “Hope it was all good,” Tifa said. Cloud swallowed a smile as she blushed a little under Zack’s attention. “It was,” Zack said with a warm smile. “But you’re far prettier than I imagined.” Tifa giggled. “And you’re every bit the flirt Cloud said you were. This could turn out to be a very interesting week.” “Oh, yeah?” Zack was grinning now. “Oh, yeah,” Tifa said. She smirked before turning her attention back to Cloud. “You guys want to stop and get a beer somewhere? Your mom’s not going to have dinner ready for another couple hours. She said to keep you entertained until then.” “Do I get to buy you a drink?” Zack asked. “Definitely.” Zack grinned and offered her arm. “Then lead on, beautiful!” ****** Sephiroth soon learned that Cloud was a very popular individual in his hometown, so much so that they ended up not having to pay for their drinks. The bartender, a huge man named Lex, engulfed Cloud in a bear hug before announcing that the next round was on the house, to celebrate Cloud’s visit. Sephiroth, who was used to having near celebrity status wherever he went, found it surprisingly nice to not be the center of attention for once. Oh, the bar’s patrons no doubt knew exactly who he was, but Cloud’s presence was far more important to them. They stayed at the bar for nearly an hour and a half before Tifa announced it was time to go. They shouldered their duffels and followed her into the street. “That was fun!” Tifa said. She was walking with her arm linked through Zack’s. “I’ll say,” Zack said with a chuckle. “I especially like how you clocked the guy that tried to cop a feel. That’s a mighty fine right hook you’ve got there, Miss Lockheart.” Tifa snorted. “I’ve warned that creep before that I’d hit him if he tried anything.” “I doubt he’ll try it again anytime soon,” Sephiroth said with a chuckle. “And Zack is correct; your right hook is most impressive.” Tifa grinned at him over her shoulder. “Thanks!” “Tomboy,” Cloud teased. Tifa merely stuck her tongue out at him before turning her attention forward again. They reached his house less than five minutes later. It was larger than Sephiroth had imagined it would be, and had that rural cottage feel to it that most of the other homes in the city had. It was a beautiful home, and it was quite obvious that Cloud’s mother liked to garden. The front flower beds were overflowing with several different flowers in a riot of colors. It was quite breathtaking, and Sephiroth paused to just admire the landscaping for a moment before following the others to the door. “You okay?” Cloud murmured as they approached the door. “I’m fine,” Sephiroth said with a smile. “Good,” Cloud said. He interlaced their fingers and gave Sephiroth a weak smile. “Cause I think I’m nervous enough for the both of us.” “Do you really think it will upset her?” Sephiroth murmured. “I don’t know,” Cloud said. “But I guess there’s only one way to find out.” He squeezed Sephiroth’s hand before releasing it and then opened the door. “Cloud, is that you?” “Yeah!” Cloud ushered them into the front hall and closed the door behind them. A moment later his mother appeared. She was slender and petite, and looking at her it was obvious where Cloud had gotten his blonde hair and blue eyes from. Her long hair was tied in a tail at the nape of her neck, and she wore a pair of faded jeans and a cream cable knit sweater beneath her apron. The only real indicators that she was old enough to have a son Cloud’s age were the fine lines that formed at the corner of her eyes when she smiled. “Mom, this is Zack and Sephiroth. Guys, this is my mom, Gail Strife.” “Ah, it’s good to finally meet you!” Gail exclaimed. “Cloud has mentioned both of you several times in his letters!” “Mom!” Sephiroth watched a blush spread across Cloud’s cheeks, and he had to swallow a smile. “Hope it was all good,” Zack said. Gail laughed. “It was all good, I assure you.” Gail made them drop their bags and coats by the door and then ushered them right into her large kitchen. She motioned for them all to sit. “Tell me boys, how was the trip?” “Nothing special,” Cloud said with a shrug. “Well, that’s better than it being overly exciting, isn’t it?” Gail said with a laugh. She was moving around the kitchen, pulling dishes from the oven and stirring things on the stove. The house smelled heavenly, like they’d just walked into a fine restaurant. “Definitely,” Cloud said with a laugh. Gail finished stirring the pot on the stove and then turned to look shrewdly at her son. “Enough with the small talk, son. Are you going to tell me which of these handsome young men is your boyfriend?” The pole-axed expression Cloud wore would have been funny had Sephiroth not known just how terrified Cloud was of his mother’s reaction to his being gay. From what Sephiroth could tell, Cloud loved his mother a great deal, and it would break his heart if she were to disown him. When it became apparent that Cloud wasn’t going to be able to answer right away, Sephiroth cleared his throat and gave the woman what he hoped was a disarming smile. “That would be me.” Gail regarded him in silence for several moments before she spoke. “Of course, you know that it is my parental duty to tell you that if you ever knowingly hurt my son I’ll take it out of your hide.” “Mom!” Cloud sounded as if he were torn between laughing and crying. “Well, it is,” Gail said with a sniff, and then she gave them a radiant smile. “And now that I’ve done my parental duty, let me tell you how absolutely happy I am for both of you!” Sephiroth released a breath he hadn’t even known he’d been holding. “Thanks, mom,” Cloud murmured. He was blushing brilliant red. “And now that that’s out of the way, is anyone hungry?” ***** Tseng was riding the elevator up to Rufus’ penthouse when his cell phone rang. He knew without even looking who it was. He flipped the phone open and held it to his ear. “Tseng.” “Yo, Boss. We made it just fine, and we’re about to check in at the local inn,” Reno’s lazy voice informed him. “Cloud and the others?” “Enjoying dinner at his mother’s,” Reno said. Tseng could almost picture his shrug. “Make sure you keep an eye on them,” Tseng said. “If they get in trouble, help them out of it and call me immediately.” “Sure thing, yo.” Reno stifled a yawn. “Sorry.” “Don’t be. Go get yourself some dinner and then some rest.” Tseng said. “Yes, sir. I’ll call you if anything happens.” “Good.” The line went dead, and Tseng closed his phone and slipped it into a pocket before he lifted a hand to straighten his tie. The elevator doors slid open with a soft ding, and Tseng stepped into the penthouse. “Hey,” Elena greeted. She stood from where she’d been sitting on the couch and stretched mightily. “He’s in his office.” “Thank you, Elena,” Tseng said. “Go, get some sleep, and be back here no later than eight tomorrow morning. I can’t afford to be here any later than that.” “Yes, sir.” He waited until she was gone before toeing off his shoes and heading down the hallway. He loosened his tie as he went, and by the time he stepped into Rufus’s office it was completely undone and his suit jacket was off. Rufus was standing in his usual spot. The office was lit only by the lights of the city below, and the youngest Shinra was just a black silhouette against the light radiating through the plate glass. Tseng crossed the room and carefully draped his suit jacket across a chair before he spoke. “Ready for bed, Rufus?” Rufus breath hitched audibly before he whirled to face him. “Tseng! I hadn’t realized you were coming this evening.” Tseng allowed himself a smirk. He loved the delighted look in Rufus’s eyes, obvious even in the dimly lit room. “I didn’t call because I wasn’t absolutely certain until an hour ago that I’d be able to make it.” “Are you sure it’s safe?” “Yes,” Tseng said. Not that he really cared if it wasn’t. Rufus needed him, and it was all that mattered. Tseng still remembered with clarity the moment he’d first seen Rufus. He’d been a boy on the verge of manhood, and so obviously starved for kind attention. It had become painfully obvious in the course of a day that Rufus got little to no affection from his own father, and when the President started to assign Tseng the duty of occasionally guarding his son, Tseng had taken those opportunities to show Rufus that there was life outside his father’s buildings and board rooms. Tseng had been a little surprised when he’d realized Rufus had a crush on him--he’d never really struck Tseng as gay, and perhaps that was why it had taken him nearly a year to realize it. Tseng had taken it in stride though, and still continued to treat Rufus kindly. Tseng knew he was the only person in Rufus’s life that treated him as a person rather than the “boss’ son,” and he didn’t have the heart to take that courtesy away from Rufus. At the time, he thought Rufus might grow out of it. He’d been wrong, and that had been okay, too. What had truly floored Tseng was the moment he’d realized his own feelings were turning into something far more serious than kind affection. He’d distanced himself from Rufus for nearly a month after that, even though he knew it would hurt the younger man, because it was important to Tseng that he figure out his own emotions before spending any further time with Rufus. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt Rufus with rash actions. A month was all he ended up getting, too, as he was assigned to guard Rufus during one of the various parties the President threw. Tseng remembered that night clearly, too, because it was the evening he’d realized that Rufus was no longer a boy. It was that very evening that Rufus had confided in Tseng and told him of his suspicions that his mother’s death had been anything but an accident. Rufus’s words that evening had confirmed what Tseng and the rest of the Turks had already begun to suspect--the President was corrupt and extremely dangerous. Help me, Tseng, Rufus had pleaded. Please help me stop him. That had been nearly two years past, and now Tseng found himself in the middle of more political intrigue than he cared for. There were days when he wanted to kill the President himself, but the knowledge that to do so would keep the people from ever finding out the truth stayed his hand. No, Rufus was right--the President needed to be exposed before the whole world for the monster he was. Tseng suspected it was the only way Rufus would find the peace and closure he so desperately needed. “Have you heard from Reno?” Rufus asked, pulling Tseng from his thoughts. Tseng nodded. “He and Rude are checking into a hotel now. They’ll keep an eye on Sephiroth and the others.” “Good,” Rufus said. He frowned a little. “I have a feeling that they might need the protection should they find anything.” Tseng nodded. He, too, had that feeling, and Tseng had sent two more operatives in under cover just in case they were needed. Reno and Rude didn’t know about them yet, and hopefully they would not be needed at all. “It’s taken care of,” Tseng assured Rufus. He tilted his head to the side a little and smiled. “Will you come to bed now?” Rufus nodded and wordlessly moved around the desk. Tseng opened his arms and wrapped them around Rufus’ shoulders. He pulled Rufus in close and let the man rest his weight against him. Rufus gave a contented sigh and wrapped his arms around Tseng’s waist and rested his head against Tseng’s shoulder. “When this is over, we won’t have to hide anymore, will we?” Rufus whispered. “No,” Tseng whispered. “I’ll tell anyone that will listen just how much I love and cherish you, Rufus Shinra.” Rufus made a sound that was halfway between a laugh and a sob. “Me, too,” he finally managed. He lifted his head from Tseng’s shoulder and pressed a kiss to his chin. “I’m tired.” “I know,” Tseng murmured. He tilted his head downwards and kissed Rufus gently. “Shall I tuck you into bed and read to you as I did when you were younger?” Rufus smiled a little. “No, just hold me,” he whispered. Tseng kissed him again. “Always, Rufus.” ***** TBCWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
