As Snow quickly and quietly looked for the source of the sound that he had an unnecessarily
frustrated at, he noticed bright lights creating a portal in the distance.
“What the hell?” He said to himself as he squinted, trying to get a better look at the new arrivals.
All he could make out was an average sized male and a…pink haired female. Suddenly his heart dropped to his stomach. 'Serah?!'
He sprinted toward them, completely forgetting about ‘His Royal Ripeness’ not far from him. He was suddenly smacked across the abdomen by its arm. Knocking the wind right out of him, sending him flying. While most of his wounds had been healed already, the larger one Lightning healed was still quite tender. The pain rendered him unconscious for a short amount of time.
“Snow!!” The female he had seen sounded familiar. Now he knew it was, in fact, Serah. She rushed to his aid and she and her mysterious friend removed him from danger. “Snow…are you okay?” She asked as she checked for wounds. Noting the already healed and raw area on his chest.
“Serah…” His voice was hoarse. She could hear his exhaustion with the mention of her name. “I-I’m fine. What are you…doing here?” He asked as he sat up, gripping his ribs.
“Lightning came to me...Through Noel.” She motioned to the dark haired boy standing next to her.
Almost defensively. Snow could tell by Noel’s expression alone that he wasn’t a fan of him. “He’s from the future. He knows Caius. She thinks we might be able to defeat him.” She admitted happily as she placed her hand on the arm of her fiancé.
“Light sent you? Here?” He was confused. She didn’t mention this new development during
their…encounter. He didn’t know what to feel. Anger? Frustration? Fear? Guilt?
“Yes, she also told us you needed our help. We’re here with the artifact needed to defeat your friend over there.” Noel motioned to the giant Flan. “Ready?” He asked. Completely ignoring Snow’s overall condition.
“Noel, maybe we should wait…” Serah suggested as she looked at Snow. Concern filled her eyes as she saw her once invincible man doubled over in pain.
“We don’t have enough time to wait for him to heal. We can do it ourselves. We’ve taken on worse
things during our journey.” His voice was filled with annoyance. Everyone noticed. Even Noel. “Listen, we have to defeat this monster so we can save the pillar and we can move on to the next time periodand get closer to defeating Caius.” His voice softened as he calmly explained his feelings.
“The kid’s right…” Snow admitted as he stood up, hovering over both of them. “We have to defeat it. Fang and Vanille don’t have much time left…” He pointed to an area of the pillar that had began to crumble.
“But you’re…” Serah tried to interrupt but both Snow and Noel were already heading toward the beast. “You’re hurt…” she whispered to herself before she and Mog chased after them.
The battle was tough but Snow couldn’t help but feel relieved at how strong Serah had gotten on her surprising journey. He was also a little jealous of how well she and Noel fought together. As for the fact Lightning didn’t tell him about her sending Serah on a dangerous journey with a random guy…? He wasn’t happy but he also knew she wouldn’t have done it if she didn’t have good reason. Plus, ya know, what happened only moments before Serah and Noel stepped out of the time gate also didn’t give him any room to be jealous.
The funny thing, to him anyway, was that he wasn’t jealous of them. Not really. He was proud of them. They were able to do something that even he couldn’t do alone.
Serah was strong. Just like her sister. Not three years earlier, she was forced to be a crystal while Snow and Lightning fought tooth and nail to save her. Now, here she is, saving Snow and Fang and Vanille and…Cocoon. Serah changed during the year he was gone. In a good way.
The battled ended and Snow was so filled with adrenaline that any pain he should have been feeling was numb.
“That was impressive.” Snow admitted as he lightly punched Noel’s shoulder. “You’ve taught my girl well.” He admitted as he sent a wink in Serah’s direction.
“I didn’t teach her anything. She’s a tough woman. Just like her sister. She was just never given the chance to show that to you. Or anyone else for that matter.” Noel clearly had developed some sort of feelings for her. It was obvious with how quickly he kept coming to her defense.
“Woah, killer. Calm down. I’m saying you’re both good for each other. You’re a good team.” His voice getting louder as he poked Mog’s pudgy belly. “Even you, little fluffy ball.”
Serah quickly grabbed Mog before he attacked Snow. She laughed as she snuggled him and gave him a tiny kiss on the cheek. “Mog is an excellent fighter.”
“So, where to next?” Snow asked as he sat down on a log next to Serah, bringing him to her eye level.
Serah shrugged and released Mog from her grasp and closed the distance between them. She placed her arms on his shoulders and kissed his forehead gently. This kiss felt different. It felt…final.
“We don’t know yet. Where that gate takes us, I suppose.” Noel interrupted their silent moment,
pointing in the direction of the gate they just gained access to after defeating the giant flan.
“So, I guess this is goodbye.” Snow said as he hugged Serah tightly.
“Not goodbye. I’ll always find my way back. Light wouldn’t have it any other way.” She smiled as she placed a tiny kiss on the tip of his nose. “We have to go, though.”
All three headed toward the gate in silence. Before entering the portal, Serah turned to Snow. “You still have a home in New Bodhum if you wish to return. Gadot and Lebreau said they’d take care of the place until we returned.”
He smiled and nodded as he watched them slowly disappear before his eyes. It was at that moment that he saw Noel take her hand. He didn’t feel angry. He felt relieved. She would never be alone. He would protect her. He could feel it in his soul. Noel loved her and Snow was more than okay with that. Noel helped bring a side of Serah out that not even Lightning knew existed.
They had a type of connection you only heard about in folk tales and stories. One he knew he’d never share with her.
“Be safe…” He said as they finally dissolved into the portal before him. “Keep her safe, Noel.”
Snow made his way back his bed of leaves and other random things he found upon arrival. He slowly crawled onto it and tried to get comfortable. Which was proving to be impossible. His adrenaline had since left his body. Every move he made sent a sharp pain through his ribs and mid back.
After several minutes, he finally found a position that hurt the least. His left arm propped under his wild hair while his right arm wrapped around one side of his ribs. He had no idea he was as tired as he was and soon dozed off. The last image to cross his mind was Lightning. Laying next to him on their boulder.
In complete silence. He wasn’t even thinking about their short lived and passionate moment together. Well, not entirely. He needed to see her again. He needed to feel her again.
