Chapter 51: Down Below
Yuffie sat alone on the bridge of the Highwind as Tifa approached her. The poor teen had her arms wrapped around her stomach, and she looked somewhat nauseous.
"You alright?" asked Tifa as she sat down next to her.
"I'm fine," Yuffie replied. "This place makes me sick. I have terrible motion sickness."
"I'm sorry," Tifa said. "Anything I can do?"
Yuffie shook her head. "I haven't seen you in a while," she observed.
"I know," Tifa replied. "I lot has happened. I just went on four dates straight."
"So Cloud's your boyfriend now?" asked Yuffie.
"I guess this makes him that," Tifa replied with a smile.
"You guess?" asked Yuffie.
"What am I saying?" Tifa answered. "Of course he is. It just...feels weird saying that...in a good way, of course."
"Are you glad you said it?" Yuffie asked.
"I am," Tifa replied, smiling. "I can never thank you enough for pushing me into telling him."
"Don't mention it," Yuffie said. "It pulled a nail out of my coffin."
Tifa had again thought about what things might be like if she had never confessed. She honestly did not want to think about it. The idea of them not together was making her shudder. And then, she realized she forgot to tell Yuffie the good news.
"We've even talked about getting married," Tifa continued. "He says he'll propose once we take care of Sephiroth."
"Are you sure you're ready?" Yuffie asked.
"I am," Tifa replied confidently. "I've lived the life where we weren't together. I don't even like remembering it. But now I'm ready to spend the rest of my life with Cloud. I spent twenty years knowing what he's all about."
"Hooray!" shouted Yuffie happily. "SPF!"
"SPF?" asked the perplexed Tifa.
"Yeah, SPF!" Yuffie repeated.
Tifa stared for a moment.
"SPF!" Yuffie repeated again.
"Such a perfect fit?" Tifa guessed.
"No, silly," Yuffie laughed. "Same penis forever!"
"Oh," Tifa said. Here we go again, she throught.
"What's wrong?" asked Yuffie.
Tifa was so used to saying it by this point that she no longer needed to prepare herself for it. "I'm a virgin," she said. "He'll by the only person I'll ever..."
"Ah," said Yuffie. "I see. So you're not having sex?"
Tifa shook her head. "Not until we're married. And, trust me, it's hard."
There was a minute of silence.
"Hey, I know," Yuffie suddenly announced. "There's other things you can do. Why don't you go to a nude beach together?"
"I'll pass," Tifa said. "I can wait."
"It's not sex," Yuffie insisted. "I've done it. Two weeks before I met you guys I went to a nude beach with a guy friend. Nothing happened. We swam, we sunbathed, we played frisbee. We even laid on our stomachs next to each other and talked for hours. But we didn't have sex."
Tifa got curious. "Was this Costa del Luna, by any chance?"
Yuffie affirmed. "You've been there?"
"By accident," Tifa clarified. "Cloud and I went diving. We mistakenly surfaced there." She paused. "We even saw Elena playing on the beach wearing nothing but a thong."
"The Turk?!" Yuffie exclaimed.
Tifa nodded.
"What did you do?"
"We dove again and swam away," Tifa replied. "I sound like a prude, I know," she sighed.
"Trust me," Yuffie assured her. "I know a prude when I see one."
She then turned her head to see Cait Sith standing at the enterance.
"Do you mind?!" Tifa exclaimed.
"How long were you waiting there?" Yuffie demanded.
"I just came in, I swear!" Cait Sith defended.
"What is it?" asked Tifa.
"I just wanted to let you know that the Huge Materia is safe down below," he insisted.
"Two pieces," Tifa added.
"Well," said Yuffie, "now that we're on that subject, I'm certain that the Shinra have more of it."
"You're right," said Tifa. "And if they don't handle it properly, they won't be able to destroy Meteor with the rocket."
"I think I know where it might be had," Cait Sith said.
LATER THAT DAY...
The elevator stood alone amongst the dust that had once been Junon as Cloud, Tifa, and Barret boarded it.
"Just remember," warned Cloud as the doors closed behind them and the elevator started moving down, "this elevator has many stops. Anyone can get on."
Almost as if on cue, the elevator stopped. All three of them turned to face the door. Moments later, it opened. Two soldiers and a commander got on.
The doors closed, and the elevator began moving again. One of them pointed his machine gun at Barret. The other pointed his at Cloud. Tifa was left unthreatened.
"How 'bout, whoever stays alive, gets to take her out?" one of them said.
"Alright, you're on!" agreed the other. "But what if both of us-"
"Whoa!" the first soldier interrupted. "Don't even talk about that!"
Barret quickly fired his gun-arm, killing the two soldiers instantly.
"Great," muttered the commander. "There went two perfectly good men."
Moments later, the elevator stopped again, with two more soldiers getting on.
They both quickly noticed the two dead bodies and the nervous commander.
"Okay!" announced the first soldier as the doors closed and the elevator resumed. "Back to work! Back to work!"
"I'm sleepy!" the second soldier complained.
"For Junon!" shouted the first soldier as both of them aimed their guns.
Cloud, acting quickly, drove his sword into the first soldier's chest.
The second soldier dropped his gun in fright.
On the third stop, nobody entered. Instead, the surviving soldier and commander fled.
Finally, they reached the bottom. It was cold down there, and the smell of salt water was abound.
The first room was deserted. The second room, however, was swarming with soldiers.
"You!" shouted one of them.
"You're Cloud!" yelled another.
"You are not getting this Huge Materia!" a third soldier hollered.
"So you were after the Huge Materia!" a fourth one said.
Barret promptly fired his gun-arm. All was silent thereafter.
They reached the next room just in time to see a crane-like device carrying a box that presumably contained the Huge Materia away.
"What the hell is this?" Cloud demanded.
"Shit!" shouted Barret. "All those goddam soldiers made us miss it!"
"Looks like they're taking it on a submarine," Tifa pointed out. She then turned to Cloud and Barret. "Well, come on!" she shouted as she ran further on. "We can't just stay here and scratch our butts all day!"
Finally, they arrived at the docks. They could see workers performing all sorts of tasks, as well as a supervisor, with his back turned to everyone.
"Did we make it!?" asked Cloud.
As he asked, he saw them lowering a crate containing the Huge Materia into a red submarine.
"What are you doing?" demanded the supervisor. "Help load." He then turned around. It was Reno. "Cloud?!" he exclaimed.
"We're gonna help transport the Huge Materia, Reno!" Barret shouted.
"Looks like we barely made it," Tifa said.
"Either give it to us or else," warned Cloud. "Which is it gonna be?"
"Unfortunately, I don't have time to deal with you," Reno announced. "My priority is the Huge Materia!"
With that, he ran off.
As the three began to pursue him, they all heard the sound of a laser fire. Each of them turned around to to see a giant robot with two arms and three legs closing in on them.
"Fuck!" shouted Cloud. "Not the Carry Armor!"
"The what?" shouted Tifa.
"That thing's designed to pick things and people up and throw them," Cloud warned. "Stay well away from it!"
The Carry Armor began to fire lasers at the three, easily missing Tifa and Barret, but barely missing Cloud.
"Hey!" shouted Barret. "What's that red thing in the middle?"
"I don't know!" Cloud replied. "The fuel tank, maybe?"
"One way to find out!" Barret shouted. "Stand back!"
With that, he opened fire on the center of the Carry Armor. A moment later, a blast came from the center, causing pieces of the robot to fly in all directions.
"Winning!" Barret shouted.
The three quickly turned around, and just as quickly changed their outlook.
"Shit!" shouted Cloud. "The submarine's gone!"
"They were distractin' us!" Barret shouted.
"Well, we can't stay here!" Tifa shouted, pointing to a second submarine.
Barret turned to Cloud. "She wears the pants in your relationship, doesn't she?"
They quickly boarded the second submarine. As soon as they were through the hatch, they saw that more soldiers were waiting for them.
"You!" shouted one of the soldiers. "You're not taking over this ship!"
"You want the sub?" shouted a second soldier. "Just try and take it!"
"Maybe we shouldn't piss them off," said a third.
Tifa quickly grabbed a ceiling pipe and elevated herself off the floor. She performed a roundhouse kick, knocking the three of them out cold.
"Damn straight," she said.
"Dude!" Barret shouted in Cloud's direction. "Really, really don't piss her off!"
The three made their way to the bridge, where more soldiers were waiting.
Barret immediately cocked his gun-arm.
"No, no!" shouted the commander. "This is terrible!"
Where have I seen them before, Cloud thought.
"We don't have much time left!" shouted one of the soldiers. "I don't want to die! There's still so much more I've got to do!"
"I never even got to do my special victory dance in battle!" protested the other.
Of course! Cloud realized. These are the soldiers I met when I was in the parade.
"Alright," shouted the commander. "Then make this your first victory! Go on, show 'em!"
"Yes, sir!" the soldiers acknowledged in unison.
"Remember your last training!" ordered the commander. "Begin!
"Yes, sir!"
"I'm back!" the commander announced. "And now I got no regrets! Attack!"
"Wait!" shouted Cloud as he drew his sword. "Drop your weapons!"
The three did as they were told and moved to the corner.
And then, Cloud began to feel it.
"Fuck it," he muttered. "It's getting claustrophobic in here."
"Don't tap out now!" Barret shouted.
Tifa, meanwhile, pressed a button.
"There we go!" she announced. "It looks like we can pilot this thing with these controls."
She took Cloud's hand and guided him to the console.
"If you pilot it, you'll feel better," she assured him.
Cloud did as he was told.
"You're right, hon," he said. "I'm feeling better. I think I got this."
"If it fucks up," Barret said, "I'll kick it's ass!"
"I believe in you, Cloud," said Tifa as she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him.
Even the prisoners were enthusiastic.
"I thank you!" said one of the soldiers. "I am happy to be a hostage!"
"Piloting a submarine is very difficult!" said the other. "I am completely clueless!"
"Hey!" added the commander. "Who am I to know.
"Hey!" Cloud said. "Look what we've got!"
The screen in front of him revealed the the other submarine was a couple of hundred yards in front of him.
"Get 'em!" Tifa whispered.
Cloud pressed the button the read "fire." Moments later, a torpedo launched, traveling silently through the water before striking the other submarine.
The other submarine quickly disappeared in an explosion.
"Kick ass!" Cloud shouted.
"We didn't destroy the Huge Materia, did we?" Barret asked.
"Nah," Cloud dismissed. "It's probably sunk to the bottom, but it's still intact."
Just then, the radio sounded.
"All Shinra Submarine Units, do you read? All Shinra Submarine Units, do you read?"
"Are they calling us?" Tifa asked.
"Report, Number Two," the voice on the radio continued.
"It appears so," Barret answered.
"I'll take care of it," assured Cloud as he pressed another button. "This is Shinra Number Two. Everything's normal."
"Roger," the voice on the radio, which was quickly recognized as Heidegger's, replied. "Your next mission is to return to what's left of the Junon dock. We will transport the Huge Materia from the airport. Those without other assignments will report for guard duty. That is all. Over and out."
"The airports still there?" asked Cloud to himself. "Alright, let's roll."
"Aye-aye, Captain," Tifa playfully replied as she pecked him on the cheek.
They emerged to the surface just in time to see an airplane taking off from a dust-covered runway.
"Aw, shit!" Cloud muttered. "They're flying it off in the Gelnika!"
"Where to?" Tifa asked.
"Rocket Town, l'll bet," Cloud replied.
"Great," muttered Barret. "So what now?"
Tifa turned to Cloud, took his hand, and smiled.
"I have an idea," she said.
THAT EVENING...
The trunk-clad Cloud and bikini-clad Tifa arrived at the remains of the submarine they had destroyed.
After a brief search amongst the wreckage, they found what they had been looking for. Tifa picked up the Huge Materia and placed it in a backpack that Cloud was carrying.
Upon leaving the ruins, Tifa spotted something else: the Gelnika. It's lights were still on, but its nose was buried in the ground. One of the wings had a gaping hole in it.
Realizing that there was Huge Materia inside, Cloud and Tifa decided to swim to the wreckage.
Inside the crashed plane, they quickly realized that the interior was not flooded with water.
"This plane is Shinra's pride and joy," said Cloud as he removed his mask. "What could have brought it down?"
"Weapon, maybe?" Tifa suggested as she kicked off her flippers. "But who knows."
They entered the next room to find an unpleasant surprise: Reno and Rude were waiting for them.
"Turks!?" Cloud exclaimed.
"Again?!" Rude replied in an identical tone of voice.
"We just seem to keep running into each other lately!" Reno announced. "There were weapons and Materia developed solely to destroy Sephiroth."
"But it was attacked by Weapon and sunk to the bottom of the sea," Rude said.
"I can't give you what's here," said Reno. "We'll take out Sephiroth. I guess this is our last meeting."
"I won't let you get in our way," Rude threatened.
"These guys are pretty tough," Reno observed.
"Quick!" Rude shouted. "Toss me a Mako gun!"
Reno stood in silence.
"You did bring the Mako guns, didn't you?"
"I didn't know they were going to follow us down here!" Reno protested.
Rude sighed. "You stupid twat!" he shouted.
Rude and Reno quickly turned and ran off, leaving Cloud, and Tifa alone in the wreckage.
"So there was some secret weapon down here," Cloud said.
"Look!" announced Tifa. "There's another room back here!"
Cloud poked his head in, and sighed in disappointment.
"This must be the cargo room," he said. "This is terrible. It's all messed up."
"But there's the Huge Materia!" Tifa pointed out. "I say we take it and return to the surface before something happens."
"Let's," Cloud replied.
They took the Materia and placed it in the backpack. They then returned to the entrance and put their flippers back on. They embraced and kissed deeply before re-donning their masks and returning to the ocean.
Tifa looked at Cloud as if to say: "This time, no Costa del Luna!"
