“You don’t have to, Hojo,” I said, swallowing back the purest pain I’d ever suffered. “I’ll go.”
“I don’t want you to go,” Hojo said thickly. Eyes wide and staring, he focused unblinkingly upon the wall. “I don’t want any of you to leave.”
“Oh, all right,” Sephiroth said. “You can have the others, but this one will either leave on her own or I’ll kill her the moment I’m flesh. Your preference.”
We waited. We waited and waited. Hojo did not move or speak. The silence stretched. Sephiroth leaned up and clapped his gloved hands together right in front of Hojo’s face.
Nothing.
Frowning, Sephiroth gave Hojo a little shove on his shoulder. Hojo rocked in his seat limply before slumping over.
My heart aching, I carefully straightened him and closed his eyes.
“What’s wrong with him?” Sephiroth asked.
“He’s in nervous shock,” I snapped. “You great bully!”
Sephiroth blinked in surprise but I didn’t know if from my diagnosis or from my tone. Frowning again, he reached out to touch his father once more. I slapped his hand away. “Don’t touch him,” I hissed. “Make him any worse and you won’t live to play your stupid little games. He’s the only one who can help you, or have you forgotten?”
“How dare you strike me,” Sephiroth said lowly.
“How dare you hurt him!” I advanced on him, filling with rage. “It wasn’t enough to just get some petty revenge, was it? You had to rip his heart out and crush it under your size thirteen boots!”
“Don’t raise your voice to me.”
“Make me be quiet!” I got in his face, leaning over him with all the wrath and fear I possessed. “Go on, make me!”
We stared at each other, me panting and shaking and him vibrating with anger.
“I’m quite solid enough to kill you,” he informed coldly.
“I’m well aware, oh noble Sephiroth,” I spat. I pointed to Hojo. “Pick him up and take him to his bed, now!”
“I don’t take orders from you or anyone else.” Sephiroth suddenly began to appear bored. “Go away.”
“You’ve fucked yourself,” I announced. “Without him, you can’t come back to life.” I stood as tall and straight as I could, glaring down upon his lounging form. “You need him. I need him. Do your reluctant duty and put him in bed!”
“He’s faking.” Sephiroth leaned up, his hand going out toward Hojo.
I screamed. “No!” I put myself in between them. “You could kill him if you keep shaking him like that!”
Sephiroth’s face clouded. I saw a ripple of concern pass over his fine features. “What is nervous shock?” he asked.
“It’s shell-shock.” I turned to put my hand on Hojo’s forehead. He felt waxy cold. “Surely you encountered that in your military career, General Sephiroth?” I shook my head, disgusted with the willful cruelty of the man behind me. “Never mind,” I said. I raised my bracelet. “Michael? Have you left for your date yet?”
“On my way out now,” Michael said in a cheerful tone. “Whatcha need, Vic?”
“I need you to come to Hojo’s quarters and put him to bed,” I said. ‘He’s had another shock.”
“I’ll be right there,” Michael said immediately.
I waited in anxious temper for three minutes, cursing under my breath and pacing. Sephiroth did not say a word nor did he move the entire time.
To Michael’s credit, he didn’t bat an eye upon seeing the famed General Sephiroth sitting on Hojo’s couch. He merely took Hojo in his arms and carried him carefully to the bedroom. With tenderness and concern, he put him under the blankets. “What happened, Vic?” he asked.
“I can’t go into it,” I said, shaking my head. “Look, set me up with his tranqs and go ahead on your date; he’s going to be out of it indefinitely.”
“I can’t leave him!” Michael turned his wide, brown eyes to me.
“You can.” I turned him around and began marching him toward the desk. “It’s my turn to watch him, Michael. You watched him last time. I promise if there’s any change, good or bad, I’ll link with you.”
“But-.” Michael cut himself off as he grabbed the case of syringes and vials in Hojo’s desk.
“No, he would want you to go out, wouldn’t he?” I asked, shoving him toward the door as soon as I saw which medicines Hojo needed.
“Yes, but-.”
“Then, do what would make him happy.”
Michael stopped, whirling. “Vic, it goes against my grain!”
I looked at him. “ Michael, I love him too.”
My friend sighed. Eyes deeply troubled, he finally nodded. “Okay,” he relented. “But, any change and I want to know. I’ll be back in three hours.”
“I promise I’ll keep you informed.”
“Good enough, Vic,” Michael said, giving in.
He left. I shut the door and walked back to the desk, not looking at Sephiroth. Nervous, upset, my hands shook as I filled a syringe.
“Is it that dangerous?” Sephiroth asked.
“Yes.” I filled one syringe and prepped another. “Your father is schizophrenic and sensitive. He loves you. He also cares deeply for his surrogate family. You demanded he choose, but that wasn’t enough for you. You had to hurt him, to twist a knife in his heart.”
“He deserves it.” Sephiroth stared up at the ceiling. “He made my childhood a living torment.”
“It’s nothing compared to what it could have been,” I said grimly. “Hojo is no saint, I’ll grant you, but you’re an adult now, and able to use reason. Who are you to judge him when you’ve voluntarily ruined thousands of lives?” I readied another needle, just in case. “You’re just jealous of me and Michael and Alison and Jean, admit it.”
“I admit nothing.”
“Fine.” I tamped down my urge to scream. “Be destructive. Ruin the only unconditional love you’ll ever know. Do things exactly as you always have and take pleasure in watching your life burn to bitter ashes.”
“You don’t have any idea,” Sephiroth argued, standing up. “You’ve only had the good of him,” he said, pointing toward the bedroom.
“I know what he’s done and I know what you’ve done,” I countered. “You’re going to have to forgive him and yourself if you ever want things to change. You aren’t happy, Sephiroth, and you never will be happy unless you make an effort to get past your resentment.”
I went into the bedroom and gave Hojo his sedative, my eyes tearing up as I looked at his limp, unresponsive form. Only hours ago he was smiling, his black eyes alert and full of life. Now he looked like a broken marionette. I took his hair down for the sake of his comfort and crawled into bed with him, ignoring Sephiroth in the doorway.
I pressed as close to Hojo as I could, putting my arm around him. The tears came harder now, and I didn’t try to stop them. I buried my face in the crook of his neck, inhaling his scent and knowing I could never forget it.
Or him.
