Someone to Love...
by Midori Bond
Chapter 6
People were
running and screaming all over the beach. The strike of lightning had
hit the water, and now the residents of Costa Del Sol all wanted to
run for cover. Amber eyes snapped open as a child's cry reached her
ears. "Chaos," Sophia whispered as she slowly made her way
to her feet. She glanced at Peter and saw that he was watching her,
carefully trying to gauge her temper, and power. A sinister smile
crossed her face as she looked at her younger friend. "He's been
born," she said with a sibilant hiss.
Peter
swallowed as he stood with her. He had known her for years. Had known
that she was as much of a time bomb as Vincent Valentine. But now he
was wondering if she was the greater danger of the pair. Vincent had
learned to control Chaos, but Sophia practically lived for
Destruction. "How do you know?" he asked in a small voice.
The look she gave him should have sent chills down his spine.
"Sophia?" he questioned.
Her smile
didn't fade as the sky started to turn black with storm clouds. She
looked at Peter, her expression almost innocent. "I want him for
my own," she said.
He continued
to watch her as one of the near vending carts caught fire. Peter
frowned as he looked towards mansion on the hills. "We can't
injure him," he told her in a stern voice.
"I
won't," she said as another bolt of lightning struck the sand,
not too far from where she was standing. "I want to raise him."
Peter wanted
to tell her no. He wanted to remind her that they both were on the
wrong side of insane and couldn't raise another living thing. But he
held his tongue. The child held too many possibilities. "Then
you can have him," he said moving to sit back down. He looked at
her and saw the way she smiled. "Are you going to level this
city too?" he asked. He wanted to make sure that if she did, all
of his things would be removed.
Sophia shook
her head as four Harpies appeared around her. She looked at the
nearest one and gently touched it. "You feel him too, don't
you?" she asked tenderly. As the creature nodded, she smiled.
"Bring him to me. Kill any that try to stop you."
Peter was
unimpressed by the show of her favorite "pets", but he was
amused by the continued screaming all around him. "You said that
Cloud Strife was looking for the mother. Don't you think you should
make arrangements for his interference as well?"
A growl
escaped her as she thought of the blonde she had spoken with earlier.
She had no doubt that Cloud would try to do something to stop her...
"That's why I have Necro," she said carelessly.

Tifa felt
Reno's grip tighten on her arm. In her doorway stood her first love,
and the reason why she ran away. Tears slowly filled her eyes as she
witnessed the shock in his. "Cloud," she whispered stepping
closer to him.
Before he
could say anything, a baby's cry caught his attention. He turned
towards the bassinet and saw one of the newer creatures he had seen
in the Materia caves. He then realized the blood that covered Tifa,
and the bed. He felt like something had just slammed into his chest
as he watched Tifa. She was standing on shaky legs as she made her
way to where the baby was laying.
"It's
alright Lucien, Mama's here," she whispered as she lifted her
son into her arms. She could only sigh as he flexed his wings and
moved them restlessly. She was sure that he would be a handful once
he tried to fly. She heard Cloud's sharp intake of breath and turned
to him. She didn't want their meeting to go this way, but now she had
no other choice. "I know you have a lot of questions," she started.
Cloud frowned
at the understatement. He had spent months looking for her, and now,
not only did he find her, but her child as well. He swallowed around
the lump in his throat. "You're right, I do," he said with
a slow nod. His eyes turned to the side as Reno cleared his throat.
"Look, I
hate to break this up, but we have to get her out of here," he
said tossing an outfit on the bed for Tifa.
Cloud shook
his head. "She's not going anywhere," he said wearing a
deep frown.
From the door,
Lucrecia frowned. She had hoped that Cloud wouldn't find them until
they were at the airship. She looked at Tifa, knowing that the
younger woman was in for yet another shock. "Cloud, we have to
leave now," she said lowly. When he turned to look at her, she
saw the way his eyes widened in recognition. "Shinra is after
her," she admitted.
"What are
you doing here Lucrecia?" Cloud asked.
Tifa felt
faint as she heard one of the names that haunted her. She looked at
the woman she had come to trust and swallowed. "Lucrecia?"
she asked softly.
She could see
the heart break in Tifa's eyes and shook her head. "I can't
explain everything right now," she said looking between the
pair. "We have to get you and Lucien out of here."
Tifa shook her
head and held Lucien closer to her body. "I'm not going anywhere
with you," she said backing towards the window.
Reno's eyes
went round as he saw a shadow fly up to the window behind Tifa.
"Tifa!" he called out.
Just as she
turned, a large Harpy crashed through the glass. She ducked down and
curled her body around Lucien, who started to scream and cry all over again.
Cloud's eyes
narrowed as he saw one of the talons of the attacking creature slice
into Tifa's back. "Yuffie!" he shouted as he started to
cast a fire spell.
Tifa stayed
huddled on the floor as she heard the Harpy scream in agony. She
looked up and saw the Harpy above her being engulfed by flames while
another came through the window. She shifted Lucien to one arm and
balled her free hand into a tight fist. She wasn't going to allow
anyone or anything to take her son. Just as the creature closed in on
her, Epy charged in front of her and sank his fangs into the Harpy's throat.
Wide brown
eyes looked at the Summon spirit and took a quick breath. She had
taken him to the wilderness and trained him, but never had she seen
him so vicious. Tifa was brought back to the present when she felt
Reno take her by her arms.
"We have
to get out of here," he said pulling her out of the room. He
looked at Cloud and Yuffie and saw that they were both moving to
protect Tifa. He frowned as he glanced at Lucrecia. "How the
hell did they know where she is?" he yelled at her.
Tifa kissed
the top of Lucien's head and tried to calm her breathing. "It's
because of him," she said as they moved to the front door. She
looked outside and saw the car doors opened, and yet another Harpy
ripping out the engine.
Cloud frowned
as he looked at Tifa. She was holding her child, Vincent's child, and
couldn't help the feeling of jealousy that washed over him. He pulled
her behind him and started for the street. "Yuffie, run
interference. I'll get her to Cid."
Yuffie nodded
as she moved away from the mansion. "Just don't leave without
me," she said trying to keep her mood light.
Reno saw the
forced smile Yuffie wore and inhaled. He could tell she didn't know
what these things were, and was afraid of them. His lips thinned as
he glanced at Lucrecia. "You find him for her," he ordered.
As the brunette nodded, he turned to Tifa. "I remember these
things," he said lowly. "I know how to kill 'em."
Tifa shook her
head, knowing what he was planning. "Reno, no."
"Hey,
what's the worse that could happen?" he asked kissing her
forehead. "You just get Lucky out of here." Before she
could protest, he pushed her into Cloud's arms. "Take her,"
he said before going to Yuffie's side.
Cloud kept his
arm around Tifa's waist as they started down the street. He wasn't
going to let anything harm her, or the child. He would straighten
everything between them out later, but for right now, he would hold
the promise he made her when they were still children.

Yuffie reached
into her pocket and grabbed one of the kunai that she always carried
on her. She would make sure these things wouldn't get Lucien. She
looked over her shoulder and saw Reno just behind her. "I hope
you're here to help," she said just as the Harpy Cloud burned
came flying out of the window.
Reno pulled
her close and ducked under the beast's talons. "You could say
that," he said lowly. As he stared into her eyes, a small smirk
crossed his face. "You have any light spells on you?" he asked.
She quickly
turned and drove her kunai into one of the Harpy's legs. As it howled
in pain, it's free leg slammed into her chest. Yuffie felt blood rush
up her throat and looked up to see Reno strike her kunai with his
baton. She spat the blood in her mouth to the ground and held out her
hand. She did have one spell that she could use. "Reno!"
she called just as a light erupted from her fingers.

Tifa tried to
gently rock Lucien as he cried. She looked at Cloud as he turned down
an alleyway, pulling her behind him. "Where are we going?"
she asked lowly.
He didn't say
anything. He couldn't. What did one say when their best friend is
found living with one man, after giving birth to the child of
another? He glanced over his shoulder. Her skin was pale and her eyes
wide with fear. It broke his heart. "I'm trying to keep you out
of sight," he said lowly. "We should be at the car in a
little while," he told her. His mind replayed everything that
happened from his seeing Yuffie loading the car in front of the
mansion. A frown crossed his face as he thought about the things
following them. "How's your back?" he asked.
Her back felt
like it had been shredded, but she wasn't about to admit it to him.
She still had her pride. "I'm fine." Her eyes stayed
focused on his back as they turned another corner. She didn't want to
believe that he was real, and here. She didn't want Shinra after her
son. She didn't want to believe that Vincent was gone. Her heart was
becoming swamped with as much pain as her back, and she stumbled slightly.
Cloud stopped
and pulled her close to him. His eyes raked over her face. He could
tell she was exhausted, but she was willing to push on. He caressed
her face and sighed. "We'll be at the car soon," he said tenderly.
Tifa felt her
heart being ripped out. She didn't want to be reminded of the reasons
why she loved him. She was still too torn between him and Vincent.
She ducked her head and kissed Lucien's head. He was starting to calm
down, and a feeling of unease washed over her. Tifa looked up and saw
a large figure in black at the end of the alleyway. Her eyes widened
as she saw light reflecting off of the blade of a large scythe.
"Cloud," she whispered, backing away from him.
The swordsman
turned just in time to see a large blur rushing them. Just as he
readied a spell, he felt the scythe cut into his stomach. As he fell
back, he could hear Tifa screaming his name.
Tifa shifted
Lucien to one arm and looked at the figure. She wouldn't let Shinra
have her son. She would die first.
Just as the
creature rushed at her, she charged it. With ease, she ducked under
the wide swing of the scythe, and sprang up to kick the thing
in its face. She landed on one knee and turned, about to strike, when
she felt something slam into her back. As she fell forward, the
figure she was fighting raced forward and wrapped a scaled hand
around Lucien. "No," she growled as her fist slammed into a
cloaked shoulder. She screamed out as claws slashed at her back
again. Tifa turned and felt her foot connect with something solid
behind her. She held Lucien tighter as a woman with blonde hair and
honey colored eyes wiped a trail of blood from the corner of her
mouth. "I won't let you take him," she said as blood rushed
out of her mouth as well.
Sophia snarled
as her hand flexed, showing off claws where her fingers once were.
"You don't have any choice in the matter," she growled
before charging Tifa again. "Necro!" she called as Tifa
started to move.
Tifa jumped
back, avoiding Sophia, but cried out in pain as the scythe pierced
her back. Lucien's cries reached her ears as the blade cut through
her chest. Blood gushed out of her mouth as her grip on her son gave
away. The last thing she saw was the blonde woman smiling as she
snatched Lucien away. "Lucien," she whispered as everything
faded to black.
Sophia smiled
as Tifa was dropped to the cold cement. She wasn't impressed by
Vincent's whore, but his son was another matter. She allowed her
fingers to return to their original state and smiled as he continued
to cry. "Lucien," she whispered, trying the name for
herself. She liked the irony of it. A small creature born of
darkness, being named after light. She gently caressed his hair as
she started down the alley way. "You will grow to be a powerful
young man, Lucien," she told him tenderly. As she stepped out
onto the street, she saw a familiar truck pull up in front of her.
She smiled as she looked at Peter. "Let's go home, shall
we?" she asked getting into the vehicle.
Peter frowned
as he saw the state of both Lucien and Sophia. They were both covered
in blood, and if he knew Sophia, he knew that it was Tifa's blood,
and not her own. "Which home are we going to?" he asked
pulling out into the street.
Sophia was
playing with Lucien's hair. She never thought the child would be so
adorable. He looked exactly like Vincent, with a little of Chaos
mixed in. He was perfect. "We can always go to the North. My
father had a lab up there." She caressed Lucien's bow shaped
mouth and giggled when he opened it, trying to suck on her finger.
"And you'll have your own room, with everything you could
possibly want. Yes you will," she cooed.
Peter bit the
inside of his lip as he drove. Over the past few months she had been
hard to control. But now, he had the sinking feeling that she was now
going to be impossible. "Have you called back the Harpies?"
he asked as they passed another large truck.
Sophia made a
face as she continued to play with the baby. "Those mean people
hurt Mommy's Harpies," she said in a babyish voice. When Lucien
cooed, she laughed. "I'll reign them in once we're on the road."
Peter inhaled
as they started to near the edge of the town. He would have to remind
her that she was supposed to remain objective if she was going to
raise the child. But that would wait. He wasn't going to anger her
when they were in such close quarters. "Will those mean people
be coming after us?" he asked lowly.
Sophia
shrugged. "Their odds are about 80/20 to no," she said as
Lucien started to drift off to sleep in her arms. "Go ahead and
sleep baby," she whispered. "Mommy's here."
* * * * *
Reno drove
through the streets at a breakneck speed. Yuffie was at his side
nursing a cut on her arm, but his mind was focused on Tifa. He knew
that she would fight whatever was after Lucien, but he feared that
she wasn't strong enough in her current condition.
"Stop,"
Yuffie ordered. Her gaze was focused out of the window, and locked
on a large van parked on the side of the street. Before the car even
stopped, she had the door open and was running into the alley.
"Cid!" she called.
"Shit
this is bad," the pilot called back. "Get your ass over
here so you can heal them," he ordered.
Yuffie ran
down the alley and almost screamed. Both Tifa and Cloud were lying
unconscious in a pool of blood. Without hesitation, she started to
cast her spells.
Reno came up
behind Yuffie and felt his heart jump into his throat. He slowly
approached his friend, praying that he was seeing things. When her
body became surrounded by a soft green glow, he frowned. Sapphire
eyes scanned the area, and Reno felt his stomach drop. He looked at
the frowning pilot. "Where's Lucky?" he asked with a frown.
"Who's
Lucky?" Cid asked as Cloud slowly started to come to. "They
were the only ones here when I got here."
"Fuck,"
Reno sighed. He looked around the alley and restlessly tapped his
fingers against his leg. "This isn't good," he said as
Yuffie sagged against a near wall. As their eyes met, he shook his
head. "They've got him."
