Another week passed. My babies began to move. Had I been focused on other things I might not have felt them, but I reached for them in mind and body constantly, seeking the comfort of their health. I wanted the best for them.
Without those loose dresses I would really show now. I looked at my swelling abdomen in the mirror each morning, running my hands over it and thinking about the life that dwelt inside. I imagined Hojo’s hands sometimes. I wanted so much for him to experience this with me.
My tracking bracelet never blinked.
On Friday evening, Sephiroth returned. He walked through my doors like a king, settling into the chair opposite my desk. “I have a cat,” he proclaimed.
“Good.” I stayed seated, desiring the cover of my desk. “Where did you get it?”
“Here, in Wutai.” He crossed his legs at the ankles and folded his hands together across his lap. “It’s a balefore.”
I swallowed back an exclamation of alarm. “Balefore cats are rather larger than an ordinary housecat,” I murmured.
“It was orphaned.” Sephiroth shrugged. “I figured one cat was the same as another.”
To some degree he figured correctly. Still… “Balefore cats have no domestication in their blood,” I pointed out. “But, a pet is a pet. What did you name it?”
“I have to name it?” Sephiroth looked at me as if I’d sprouted horns.
“Don’t you want to name the cat?” I shot back.
He frowned. “How does one go about naming an animal? They don’t know what you say, after all.”
“They can pick out their name,” I assured. “Don’t assume they’re stupid.” I leaned back a little. “What color is it?”
“She’s solid white.” Sephiroth appeared to consider. “No, she has a flame tip to her tail.” He paused. “I could call her Flame?”
“That’s good,” I encouraged. “How long have you had her?”
“Since the last time I visited you.” Sephiroth eased back a little. “I spotted her wandering the grassland. When I touched down I saw her mother’s body. The other kittens were dead.”
“How did that make you feel, Sephiroth?”
“Regretful,” he admitted. “They’re beautiful beasts. They make prey of men so easily.” He took off his gloves slowly. “Hojo has her in his quarters. He seems to have a way with cats.”
I repressed an ache of pure need.
“Your father is very tactile and open,” I explained. “He probably pets her.”
“He does.” Sephiroth lit a smoke. “I stay with him, too. I sleep on the couch. I don’t like the quarters Rufus assigned.”
“What’s wrong with your new quarters?”
Sephiroth sighed. “Nothing, really,” he admitted. “Everyone kisses my ass right now. Still, I feel more comfortable with Hojo.” He leaned back. “He doesn’t hold back. But, he’s different. I don’t remember him being so…touchy-feely. He takes any excuse to touch me.” Sephiroth blew a plume of smoke, his eyes following its progress toward the ceiling. “At first I hated it. Now, I don’t mind it if he claps me on the back or squeezes my shoulder.”
“He’s trying to catch up with years of not being able to do that,” I murmured. “I’m glad you let him.”
“He’s the only person I’d accept it from,” Sephiroth admitted. “Rufus tried to touch me yesterday and I broke his hand.”
I sniggered. I couldn’t help it. Sephiroth looked at me, a small smile inching out on his lips. “Does that amuse you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Rufus tried to take me away from your father in the beginning. He wanted a quick, disposable fuck. I enjoy hearing about his suffering.”
“It makes you feel vindicated.” Sephiroth took another long drag off his cigarette. “I understand that emotion very well.” He went back to looking at the ceiling. “I’m surprised you haven’t tried to contact my father.”
I sighed. “Aside from believing you’d kill me, I don’t want Kanaye unhappy.”
Sephiroth blinked. “You call him by name? No one does that.” He dropped his cigarette butt into an empty glass.
“It makes me feel closer to him.”
“Why do you still miss him? You’ve been away from him longer than you were ever together.”
“Because, Sephiroth, I love your father,” I said firmly. “Time and distance won’t affect that.”
Sephiroth rolled his eyes. “We’ll see.”
