Chapter 61: A Very Good Breed
"Round Island is out of the question," Bill said during breakfast.
"It may be the only way," Cloud said. "It's likely that Sephiroth is having the same premonitions that we are. Who knows what he's planning differently?"
"That may be," Bill replied, "but there's no way to get to Round Island. There's a natural wall surrounding it. No airship can land there; the terrain's too swampy."
Cloud shook his head. "How could anyone know that, then?"
"Ships have gone by," Bill answered.
Cloud sighed. "We've done lots of things previously thought impossible."
"There's only one way you guys will ever get to that island," Bill said. "You need a golden chocobo."
"So you can get to the island," Aerith said.
"Where can I find a golden chocobo?" Cloud asked.
"Nowhere," Bill replied. "My last one died before either of you were born."
"Where did that one come from?" Cloud inquired.
"I bred it," Bill replied.
"Can it still be bred?" Cloud asked.
"Of course," Bill replied. "But it's a tough process."
"We just might need to in order to save the world," Aerith said.
"Well," began Bill as he cracked his knuckles, "what do you know about chocobo breeding?"
Both Cloud and Aerith gave him a stumped look.
"Thought so," Bill continued. "Well, here are the basics. "Chocobos have a three hour gestation period. That goes on record, by the way, as the shortest gestation period in the animal kingdom. After the egg is laid, it takes another two hours or so to hatch. Five hours later, a chocobo is fully grown and ready to breed. They're basically the opposite of mayflies."
"Mayflies?" asked Cloud.
"They spend two years as larva, then they suddenly grow up, mate, and die within hours."
"So how to we breed a golden chocobo?" asked Cloud.
"You need to breed a black chocobo and a wonderful chocobo."
"Perfect," said Aerith. "Do we have them on the farm?"
"I don't have either," Bill replied. "The only special ones I have are blue and green. Breed a blue and green and you'll get a black."
"How do we get a wonderful chocobo?" Aerith asked.
"I never bred one," Bill replied. "You can catch one on the Northern Continent, though."
"I think we have a game plan," Cloud said as he prepared to stand up.
"Hold it," Bill warned. "It's not that simple. You also need the nuts."
"I'm twenty-one," Cloud replied. "I know where babies and sperm come from."
Bill sighed. "Carob nuts!" he clarified. "If you feed them to a female blue or green chocobo shortly before pregnancy, she'll hatch a black chocobo."
"Do we have any carob nuts here?" asked Aerith.
Bill shook his head. "They're very hard to come by. When I bred my gold chocobo, I had to take mine from a vlakarados."
"A what?!" exclaimed Aerith.
"Not something you want to mess with," Bill warned. "It's a red lizard with rather sharp claws and teeth. They're omnivores, so you'll see them chowing down on on carob nuts on Monday and children on Wednesday."
"But you can find them carrying carob nuts?" Cloud asked.
"You got it," Bill replied.
"Can't we just skip the lizards and find the nuts?" Aerith asked.
"The nuts only grow underground," Bill said. "You'll never find one unless a vlakarados digs one up for you."
"I have a sword," Cloud said. "And an airship. This will be a cakewalk."
"If you insist," Bill said. "But don't say I didn't warn you about anything."
Cloud then turned to Aerith.
"Well," he began, "ready to try the Highwind?"
ON THE NORTHERN CONTINENT...
The Highwind landed on one of the few patches of grass surrounded by the endless snow.
"Wow," Aerith said as she stepped off the Highwind. "I've always wanted to fly on it!"
Aerith browsed the terrain, checking for wildlife. He could see mountain walls in the distance, as well as snow falling from the sky. Then, a few degrees to his left, he found a familiar looking bird that was an ivory white.
"It's a wonderful chocobo," Cloud said.
And then, he felt a snowball hit him in the back of the head.
He immediately turned around to see Aerith giggling.
After playfully glaring at her, Cloud pulled a pistol from his pocket and fired, causing the wonderful chocobo to collapse to the ground.
Aerith gasped in horror.
"It's only tranquilized," Cloud assured her. "It'll wake up in an hour."
"You could've just lured it over here," she reprimanded.
"Your point being?" asked Cloud.
He began to walk toward the fallen chocobo. All he would have to do is carry it to the Highwind.
"Cloud!" Aerith suddenly exclaimed.
A few yards away stood a creature. It was about three feet high, but its size was the least of concerns. It was a red, reptilian creature, with red eyes, sharp teath, and horns coming from both its back and tail.
"That thing certainly doesn't look very friendly," Aerith said.
The creature also had a nut tucked in one of its arms.
"It's a vlakarados," Cloud said.
"A what?"
"What Bill warned us about," he clarified. "See the carob nut it has? It looks like we're having a really good day."
"Let's hope," she said. "I don't want that thing coming anywhere near me."
As they watched, it started to approach the bird.
"He's going to eat the poor chocobo!" exclaimed Aerith.
Cloud drew his sword. "If he still has a head," he said.
The vlakarados quickly turned its head towards Cloud, and immediately charged.
"Damn, he's keen!"
The creature was so fast that it took it only a few seconds to be within a yard of Cloud.
Cloud took a swipe with his sword, and felt nothing but the cold wind on his blade.
And then, he felt a sharp pain in his right leg.
He took another swipe, and, a moment later, the creature's head was rolling away from him, with its body laying harmlessly on the floor. He easily picked up the nut, which had rolled several inches from the dead creature's hand.
He then turned to face Aerith, who had her hands over her mouth, and a horrid look on her face.
"You're hurt!" she exclaimed.
Cloud looked down. His right pant leg did not look torn, but he could see blood on his shin.
"Are you okay?" she asked as she ran over to him.
"Cold, all of a sudden," he replied. "But I'll live."
He then turned to the chocobo.
"I suppose we'll get it aboard the Highwind before another one of those things come along."
Cloud and Aerith picked up the bird and carried it over to the Highwind. As they reached the top of the ramp, Cloud noticed two more vlakarados in the distance.
THAT NIGHT...
"Cloud took a nasty wound," Aerith said at the dinner table. "And now he's got a cold spell."
"No worries," Bill assured her. "That's a typical side effect of those kind of scratches. It'll wear off by tomorrow morning." He paused. "I see you found a wonderful chocobo."
"We sure did," Cloud said.
"You sure he'll be okay?" asked Aerith as she placed a hand on Cloud's shoulder.
"Ew! Love!" Chloe said again.
"Grow up!" snapped Billy.
"What happened with the blue and green?" Cloud asked. They had fed the blue chocobo the carob nut as soon as they returned and mated her with the green.
"You just missed it," Bill replied. "A chick just hatched before your came in for dinner."
"What color is it?" asked Cloud.
"See for yourself," Bill insisted.
Cloud and Aerith left the house and started the path. When they arrived at the stable, they found a black, fuzzy chick nestled next to its blue mother. It was but a few hours old.
"We did it," Aerith said.
"Now, all we need to do is breed a golden chocobo, and were on our way to Round Island!" added Cloud.
The two then returned to the modular. Upon reaching the top of the stairs, Aerith placed her hands on her hips and gave him a look.
"We have to do something about that scratch!" she announced.
"I know," Cloud agreed.
"It needs to be washed, or you could get infected."
She then took his hand, led him over to the bathtub, and sat him down on the ledge. Before Cloud could say anything, Aerith gripped his belt loop and yanked off his pants and boxers.
"You could've just rolled up my pant leg," he said.
"You're point being?" replied Aerith as she turned on the water, wet a cloth, and began to clean the wound.
"So what other nasty creatures have you encountered?" she asked as she mopped the dry blood from his shin.
"Have you seen the Weapons?" asked Cloud.
"Only from the ferry," Aerith replied. She then put a hand on his knee. "You're cold!"
"Bill said it would wear off by tomorrow morning," he reminded her.
"It's not tomorrow morning yet," she said. She then looked at the tub, and noticed that it was halfway full. She quickly pulled off his sweater and tossed it aside. "Now get your cute naked butt into the tub!" she ordered.
Cloud sat in the bathtub as Aerith stood up and turned to leave.
"I forgot to lock the door," she said with a big smirk on her face.
He placed his arms on the sides of the tub and smirked himself; he knew exactly what that meant.
A few moments later, Aerith returned to the bathroom, wearing a bathrobe.
"Got room for your girlfriend?" she asked sweetly as she stepped into the tub.
She then slipped off the bathrobe, giving Cloud a generous view of her backside.
They sat together in the tub for an hour. They then decided it was late, and that the both needed rest.
"I'm cold!" Aerith complained playfully as she dried herself off.
She put her shirt back on and covered her lower half with a towel.
"After you!" she said.
Cloud strolled naked into the bedroom, hearing Aerith's footsteps behind him. As he reached the bed and pulled back the covers, he heard the towel drop to the floor. Smiling, he turned around.
She had put on a pair of black panties with a bow on each side.
"I almost forgot I had these!" she said, smiling.
Cloud was not impressed. Disappointed, he grasped them and slipped them to the floor.
"Hey!" Aerith complained playfully.
"What?" asked Cloud innocently as he pulled them away from her ankles.
"You prefer me like this, don't you," Aerith said with a smile.
"Isn't that obvious?" Cloud replied.
She sighed, defeated.
"I'll be like this for you tonight," Aerith said. "But no sex, okay? You need to rest."
Cloud nodded.
Five minutes later, the lights were out, Cloud was in bed, laying on his back, and Aerith was to his left, laying on her stomach with her arm around him.
THE NEXT MORNING...
Cloud awoke, placed his feet on the ground, and stood up.
"Good morning!" greeted the already-dressed Aerith, who happened to be standing in front of him.
"Hey," he said groggily.
"How are you feeling?" she asked.
"Better," Cloud replied, before looking down on his wound. "Mostly," he then added.
"See what having a girlfriend can do for you?" she said.
"I see," he replied. "So what now?"
"What now?" she asked. "You're in charge of everything, remember?"
"I suppose the black chocobo is grown up by now," he said. "We'll breed it with the wonderful chocobo and see what happens."
Aerith continued to look at him; it was obviously not the answer she wanted.
"And we could spend the day together," he added.
"Yay!" She exclaimed as she threw her arms around him.
LATER THAT MORNING...
They moved the black chocobo into the same stable as the wonderful chocobo. They look one look at each other, and then moved to opposite sides of the pen.
"Well?" Cloud began.
The two chocobos sat down. The wonderful chocobo looked at Cloud, seemingly dumbfounded.
"Maybe we should give them some privacy," Aerith suggested.
Cloud could have nearly sworn that the black chocobo nodded in agreement.
"But they're birds," he said. "They wouldn't care.
"Sex means privacy," Aerith insisted. "And vice versa."
Cloud gave Aerith a blank stare.
"Come on," she protested. "When I asked to you meet me in my room that night, you had to know we were going to do it."
"I remember," Cloud said. "And, yes, that was what I figured."
Aerith smiled at him.
"I was nervous as I heard you come in," she continued. "I was wondering what your reaction would be when you saw my butt for the first time."
"You're beautiful head to toe," he said.
She squeezed his arm and pecked him. "This is what I love about you."
"What?"
"You make me feel beautiful," she said.
"I kind of figured you wanted to move ahead when I got that steamy text of yours," he said.
She giggled.
"Cloud, if it wasn't for the gale at Costa del Sol, we would've done it on the bench that night."
"That was outdoors," Cloud said.
"And?" Aeirth asked innocently.
"We'd get caught if we got naked outdoors."
"We didn't have to get naked," she said. "I was going to pull your fly down and move by bikini bottoms to the side. Passers-by wouldn't notice!"
"Well," said Cloud, "I suppose we should give those two some privacy."
Aerith nodded.
Both of them turned and, and gasped simultaneously.
Billy was standing there.
"How long have you been there?" asked Cloud.
"A while," Billy replied.
"How much did you hear?" asked Aerith.
"Everything," Billy answered.
Both adults began to blush, Aerith more so than Cloud. The three stood for a few moments in awkward silence.
"You do know the facts of life, don't you?" Cloud finally asked.
Billy sighed. "I'm ten years old. I breed chocobos. I have internet access. You do the math."
"Okay, then," Cloud said.
"What naive people," Billy muttered as he turned and disappeared along the path. "They probably think I still believe in Santa Claus, too!"
The humiliated Aerith buried her head in her hands.
LATER...
By nightfall, a golden chick joined the stable. It was nestled between the black and wonderful chocobos.
"That's it," said Cloud to Aerith as they observed from the fence. "We did it."
"Tomorrow we'll go to Round Island?" Aerith asked.
"You bet," he answered. "We'll get the Knights of the Round, and we'll use it on Sephiroth."
"And that will be that," Aerith said.
"Not quite," Cloud dismissed.
She gave him a perplexed look.
"We'll get a place together," he added. "And then, we'll talk."
Aerith smiled and kissed him.
"Ew! Love!" they both heard Chloe yell from the background.
Both of them ignored it.
"You know," he began.
"What?" she asked.
"If nobody's been there in years," Cloud replied, I wonder what else we'll find there."
