I plodded through another week. My babies went from aerobics to acrobatics. They were fifteen weeks old now, and growing like mad. I spent most of my money on food. My trashcans overflowed with containers. My back ached constantly but I had so much energy I couldn’t sit still.
I’d always kept a diary, but now I wrote in it constantly, describing in great detail all I encountered as a woman pregnant with twins. I felt overwhelmed.
I wanted so badly to see Hojo. I wanted to talk to him, to feel his arms around me. I wanted to hear his voice and see his smile. I just wanted him. His absence was an ache that never subsided.
I’d sat down for a good cry when his son showed up. He stood awkwardly in the doorway, not speaking as I tried to compose myself. “Go ahead and have a seat, Sephiroth,” I bade him, getting up and laboriously making my way to the desk. “How do you feel today?”
“Better than you,” he said, taking his usual chair.
I laughed without humor. “Have you been saying your sentence?”
“Yes.” He paused. “It…seems to be helping.” His green eyes watched me lower myself into the chair. “You’re pregnant,” he said.
“Yes.” I couldn’t hide it anymore and he’d finally seen. Absolute fear gripped me with icy hands.
He stood up. His hands went behind his back. “How far along?”
“Almost four months,” I told him.
“Didn’t take you long.” Sephiroth grinned. “See? You got over Hojo.”
I closed my eyes. “No, Sephiroth, I didn’t get over him. I’m not over him. I never will be over him. I love your father.”
“So, you just had a slip-up?” He frowned.
“I’ve never cheated on your father.”
Sephiroth froze. “Then, you’re carrying his baby,” he said.
I wanted to tell him what a brilliant deduction he’d made, but I was too scared to be hateful. “I’m carrying your half brother and half sister,” I confirmed. “Fraternal twins.”
Slowly, Sephiroth sank into his chair. Eyes wide, he simply stared at me.
“They’re moving,” I informed. “Do you want to feel them?” If I could get him to take a personal interest perhaps they’d be safe. I made my way over to him, feeling like I approached a chopping block. Being forced to gamble with my children’s lives made me sick. Stopping beside him, I reached for his hand. I took off his glove, feeling how limp with shock he seemed.
Carefully, I pressed his hand over my energetic babies.
His eyes moved as he felt them. I saw wonder settle in that green gaze. His hand spread. He blinked rapidly. Slowly, very slowly, he moved his fingers, pushing slightly. One of the babies pushed back.
“You were crying,” he said. “Are you sad to be pregnant?” He hadn’t moved his hand.
“I’m sad without your father,” I told him. “I’m sad that he doesn’t know he’s a father again, and that he isn’t with me to share this. I’m sad to be alone.” I moved back and his hand dropped away. “Even if you allowed me to return to Hojo, I’m not sure I should. He still works for Shin-Ra, the people who prevented him from showing you any affection. He couldn’t acknowledge our children any more than he acknowledged you.”
Sephiroth put his glove on while looking at the floor. “You could have told me I had siblings on the way,” he said.
“I believed you would kill us. I still think you might. If you can’t stand to share your father with me, how will you take two more competitors?”
He flinched. “My days of killing women and children are over,” he said softly.
I breathed a sigh of relief. “What caused this change of heart, Sephiroth?”
“I have no idea.” He leaned back and met my eyes as I sat down again. “The thought just became distasteful to me. Perhaps losing my mother did it. She was always there, whispering in my head, urging me to kill, to destroy, making my thoughts hers and her thoughts mine. She had no beginning or end.”
“Do you want to talk about her?”
“No,” he answered. “I want to talk about the children.” He took a cigarette and began to put it in his mouth. Glancing at me, he halted. He put it back in his coat pocket. “What will you name them?”
“I thought I might name the boy after your father, but I had no ideas for the girl. I was never one of those women who planned on having children and dreamed up names.” Going on the plan of making the babies personal to him, I asked, “Do you have any name ideas?”
He looked at me with wide eyes. “You want me to name them?”
“Why not?”
“They’re your children,” he protested. “I had a hard enough time thinking about naming my cat!”
“They’re your brother and sister,” I countered. “I’m just asking for ideas.”
“Well, don’t pick something like Sephiroth,” he said in a sour voice. “I don’t know whose idea that was, but it’s a burden.”
I smiled. “I can’t see you as a Steven or a Roger. I think it suits you.”
He actually returned my smile. He ducked his head a little, a faint blush coloring his pale skin. “But, people always want to shorten it. I’ve killed for less than the offense of Sephy.”
“Sephy?” I fought the urge to chuckle. “That’s just horrible.”
“Yes, it is.” He sighed. “I’ll think about names, then. I wouldn’t want your children to suffer like I have. And, don’t name the boy after my father. I’ve always thought that was cruel. A child should have his own name.”
“I’ll take that under advisement,” I assured.
