Chapter 64: A New Home
Cloud and Aerith walked hand in hand through the slums. The city did not seem very different for either of them, though much had changed since they had first met. Of course, none of that really mattered at the moment; they were on their way to see Aerith's mother.
Aerith was dressed in a pair of skinny jeans and a black tank top. She was wearing lipstick, which she rarely had on, and, while she always wore earrings, hers were longer than usual. This was because she was bringing a boyfriend home to her mother. It was mainly an attempt to conform to both of them; she had worn the lipstick and earrings to look somewhat formal (for Elmyra), and the skinny jeans to show her butt off (for Cloud).
Soon, they were standing at the front door to Elmyra's house.
"A couple of hours, that's all," Aerith assured Cloud as she rang the doorbell. She then kissed him quickly before the door opened.
Elmyra, wearing a sundress, opened the door and smiled.
"Hi mom!" Aerith greeted.
"Aerith!" she greeted back as she threw her arms around her daughter. "Welcome back!"
Cloud realized that it was the first time they had seen each other since she regained her memory. He had figured Aerith had texted her mother to let her know she was okay, but he had not been one hundred percent sure.
"And Cloud!" Elmyra continued as she released her embrace with Aerith and threw her arms around him. "Thanks for everything!"
A FEW MINUTES LATER...
The three of them were now seated at the kitchen table.
"Since we're all here," began Elmyra, "I'll guess your mission to save the city was successful?"
"You bet," Aerith replied.
"I figured," Elmyra said. "But, of course, I was worried, since I didn't hear from you for a couple of days afterward."
"I had amnesia," Aerith said. "I had completely forgotten who I was. I couldn't remember a thing."
"Amnesia?!" exclaimed Elmyra. "What happened?"
"I landed on my head," Aerith replied. "In the back of a truck full of dirt."
Cloud kept his mouth shut; he could not bear to tell Aerith what she really landed in.
"It was Cloud who helped get my memory back," Aerith continued. "He showed me the flower I sold him. I was shaky at first, but it's all come back to me."
Elmyra smiled. "That's incredible," she said.
"And no, I didn't break anything in the fall," Aerith assured her mother.
"Where did you find Cloud again, anyway?" asked Elmyra.
Aerith giggled. "He found me."
"He found you?"
"I began to look for her," Cloud said. "I tracked her to Choco Bill's."
"The farm?!" exclaimed Elmyra.
"That's right," Aerith said.
"So what else have you been up to?"
"We bred a chocobo," Aerith replied.
"A golden one," Cloud added. "One that hadn't been bred in years."
"What did you name him?" asked Elmyra.
"Ajax," Cloud replied.
"Who picked the name?"
"Cloud," Aerith answered. "I wanted to name him Drahem Kcuf, but he wouldn't let me."
"What kind of name is Drahem Kcuf?" asked Elmyra.
Aerith briefly got up out of her chair, quietly whispered in her mother's ear, and sat back down with a grin on her face.
"Aerith!" exclaimed Elmyra.
"What?" she giggled. "Aren't I too old to be smacked in the face for saying that?"
Elmyra sighed and turned to Cloud. "I guess you know she has a dirty mind by now."
Cloud nodded with an embarrassed smile on his face.
"What made you want to breed a chocobo, anyway?" asked the older woman.
"We needed to get to Round Island," Cloud replied.
"I've heard of it," Elmyra said. "But I've heard that nobody can get to it."
"We could with Ajax," Aerith informed her. "It was a weird place. There were people living there, but it was like a thousand years ago."
"They had no access to the outside world," Cloud added. "Thus, no technology."
"Did they burn people at stakes?" asked Elmyra.
"Not that we saw," Cloud answered.
"What brought you over there?" Elmyra asked.
Cloud and Aerith looked at each other. They realized it was probably time to explain the whole thing.
"Listen," Cloud began, "we think Aerith might have already saved the planet."
Elmyra's eyes widened.
"She did it at the Forgotten Capital," Cloud continued.
"The what?" the perplexed Elmyra asked.
"The White Materia my biological mother gave me," Aerith interjected. "I found out what it's for. There's ruins on the Northern Continent where my kind once lived. We passed through there on our way to the North Pole. Below the ruins were more ruins. And those ruins had the altar I prayed on. When Meteor gets to close to the planet, something amazing is going to happen. The spell I cast, called Holy, will destroy Meteor and smash it to pieces."
"In theory," Cloud added. "But here comes the part where it gets complicated. Sephiroth is now at the planet's core, and might prevent Holy from activating when Meteor strikes. That is why we went to Round Island. There's a spell called Knights of the Round that we intend to use on him."
"Will that take care of everything?" asked Elmyra.
"We hope so," Aerith replied. "We think Sephiroth is having premonitions as much as we are."
"Just he careful," Elmyra warned. "Before you get yourself killed for real."
"Cloud will protect me," Aerith assured her. "He was in SOLDIER, you know."
Cloud was silent. He had never told her the truth.
"Really?" asked Elmyra. "How many missions did you go on?"
He decided he could go along with it for now. "One," he replied.
"Only one?" asked Aerith.
"That's right," Cloud said. "The mission turned out to be a disaster. Even the flight from it was bad. My companion was killed along the way to Midgar."
"I'm sorry to hear that," Elmyra said.
"Thanks," Cloud said. "I think that was when I realized I was working for a corrupt organization."
Elmyra then got up out of her chair. "I'll be back down in a few minutes," she announced. She then walked to the stairs, and turned to face Cloud and Aerith once more. "You know, I finally feel safe here now that they're gone. I think we can all get along with our lives." She then mounted the stairs. "Maybe I should get remarried," she suggested. "I'm only thirty-three, you know."
A couple of moments later, Elmyra was gone, leaving Cloud and Aerith alone at the table.
"Your mom's only thirty-three?" he asked.
"She got married on her eighteenth birthday," she replied. "It was one of those quickie military marriages. They were only married for three months before he was deployed."
"Wow," he said.
"Tell me about it," Aerith continued. "She barely had a marriage. I would like her to be happy, though. She's had several boyfriends over the years, but they never made it past the six month mark. Not too many people want to date someone with a kid." She paused. "Though I would kind of like to see her have a kid of her own."
"You are her own," Cloud suggested. "You met when you were seven, right?"
Aerith nodded.
"So she's been your mom for fifteen years. I see those pictures on the wall. She was there for all the milestones."
"You know," she said. "You're right." She then glanced at the pictures. "Those were my last eight birthdays."
"Those pics look lit up," Cloud observed.
"Oh, they're electronic," Aerith said. "If you swipe them, they'll change." She then stood up, and took his hand. "Here, I'll show you."
She led him to the first picture, which read "15th Birthday."
The picture featured Aerith wearing a white crop top and a pair of jean shorts.
"I think that was the only time I ever wore a crop top out in public," she said, slightly embarrassed. "It was when Jeri Lyons was famous."
"Who?" asked Cloud.
"I rest my case," Aerith giggled.
"Oh yeah," Cloud remembered. "The pop star."
She then swiped the picture. It showed a picture of her on a table.
"Here I am dancing to Jeri Lyons," Aerith said before swiping again.
The next picture showed her with a microphone to her mouth.
"And here I am singing karaoke to Jeri Lyons. Her fifteen minutes of fame were over three months later."
They then moved over to the next picture, which read "16th Birthday."
"We went to the Costa del Sol Boardwalk," she said.
The picture featured a side view of Aerith, sitting on a bar stool in a gray tank top and a pair of cargo capris pants, drinking something. A black-haired girl with a devilish look on her face was to the right.
"Here I am, having a lemonade," she continued. "Behind me is my friend Gehrig, who is sneaking up behind me."
"Did she surprise you?" asked Cloud.
"Totally," Aerith replied.
"What happened then?" he asked.
In response, she swiped the picture to reveal a similar shot, only with Gehrig laughing, the lemonade missing, and Aerith looking down in horror at a big wet spot all over her cargos.
"She made me spill lemonade all over my pants!" she sighed. "I don't think she meant to, but..."
"What did you do?" he inquired.
Aerith then swiped the screen again. It was almost identical to the first picture of her sitting at the bar, only now, the skin of her legs, thighs, and hips was in full view. "So I took off my pants and ordered another lemonade."
Cloud, for obvious reasons, gawked at Aerith's lower half.
"Yeah," she said, "I know it looks like I'm wearing nothing. I'm actually wearing a thong, and my guy friends just couldn't stop starting."
They then moved to the picture that read "17th Birthday."
In the picture, Aerith was wearing a figure skating costume.
"You figure skated?" he asked.
"For a year," she replied. "They threatened to cut cheerleading that year, and I needed something else to do."
She swiped the picture to one that showed her skating on the ice.
"You had a competition on your birthday?" Cloud then asked.
"I sure did," she replied. "I didn't really have much of a choice, but I wanted to do it, anyway."
"Did you win?"
"Swipe it," Aerith commanded.
Cloud did so, to see her proudly standing with a gold medal. To her left was Elmyra. To her right was a guy friend who appeared to be in her age group.
"Who's that?" Cloud asked.
"That's my best friend," she replied. "Tobin."
Cloud was silent. She had never mentioned him before.
"Zack couldn't come," Aerith explained. "So Tobin came to support me."
This had to be right before the Nibelheim mission, Cloud realized.
"He looks like Tifa, now that I think about it," Aerith observed."
She then swiped again. There was one more picture of Aerith with her gold medal, with her back turned, her hand on her hip, and her smiling face turned towards the camera.
"I never skated again after that," she said.
"How come?" Cloud asked.
"I hit a home run," she explained. "Why run around the bases again?"
"As always, you have a point," he said.
Aerith giggled and nodded.
She then led him to the picture that read "18th Birthday."
It was a picture of her and Tobin at some kind of fun center.
"This was after Zack vanished," she began sadly. "I wasn't expecting anything, but Tobin surprised me and took me out. He invited all my friends and everything."
Cloud wanted to ask if they had ever dated, or what had happened to him, but he stopped himself. He figured that she would tell him if she wanted to.
The next picture, labeled "Prom," featured Aerith in a beautiful, silver gown. She swiped it to reveal one with Elmyra. She swiped it again to reveal a familiar face in a tuxedo.
"Tobin was my prom date," she said. "We were both single, so we went as friends."
She then began to giggle, and put both of her hands to her mouth. She seemed a little embarrassed about something.
"What?" asked Cloud.
"It's nothing," Aerith insisted. "Nothing at all."
Cloud was skeptical, but did not feel like pressing her.
Instead, he allowed her to lead him to the next picture, which read "Graduation." It featured Aerith in a cap and gown, one with her mother, and, of course, one with Tobin.
And then, Aerith got a sad look on her face.
"That's the last picture of us together," she said. "I saw him a couple of times after that, and then I never saw him again."
Cloud was silent. He certainly felt sorry for her.
"Are you still in touch?" he asked.
Aerith shook her head.
"To this day, I don't know what happened. He must have died or been killed or something or other."
The picture that read "19th Birthday" had Aerith and Elmyra together, with each holding cotton candy.
Cloud swiped it to see the two women on what appeared to be a roller coaster. The center seat had Aerith with her hands and hair in the air. The right seat had Elmyra with her hair in the air. The left seat was empty."
"Where's this?" Cloud asked. "Gold Saucer?"
"You got it," Aerith replied.
"Funny," Cloud said. "I heard people wait in line for over two hours there, and nobody took the one next to you."
Aerith giggled.
"This was right before I broke up with my fiancé," she said. "He's been edited out."
"Oh," said Cloud. "I'm sorry."
He realized that he was beginning to learn more about his girlfriend that he expected.
"It was a low point," she explained. "A week later, he wanted sex, and I had to tell him it was the wrong time of the month. He acted like a baby. He stormed off and faced the wall for three whole minutes. Then he turned around, pointed his finger, and dumped me."
"I'm so sorry," Cloud said.
"Don't be," Aerith said. "I found someone better." She then kissed him.
The picture reading "20th Birthday" was quite different. It featured several black and white shots of her in a dress and with a rose.
"That's when I thought about trying modeling," she explained. "I was single at the time, and my life was really boring."
They then reached the "21st Birthday" picture. This one only had one picture, with Aerith and Elmyra. Both were wearing tee shirts and bikini bottoms, and ocean water was in the background.
"Pete must've taken this one," Aerith muttered.
"Who's Pete?" asked Cloud.
"My boyfriend at the time," she sighed.
"What happened?" he asked.
"He loved his video games more than me," she replied. "So I broke up with him."
They then moved to the final picture, which read "22nd Birthday." Here, Aerith was wearing her familiar pink dress and red jacket.
"I'm an old spinster here," she laughed. "It was just me and my mom. All of my friends were either dead, married, or had moved far away." She then placed her hand on Cloud's shoulder. "I thought that I'd never get married. I figured I'd just take over the house once my mom died."
Cloud then turned to face an empty space on the wall.
"I take it that this is where your '23rd Birthday' is going to go?"
"My mom hangs them up," Aerith replied. "But it appears so."
"What do you want to be wearing?" he asked.
She face him and put her hands on her hips. "Wearing?"
"Yeah," Cloud said. "You're wearing something different in every picture."
Aerith hesitated for a moment. Then she took his hand in hers, and looked him in the eyes.
"Seriously?" she replied. "A wedding gown."
Cloud was silent. He had a feeling that was coming.
"Cloud," said Aerith, "we're not getting any younger, and we know what we want. But..."
"But what?" he asked.
"I just wonder who would escort me down the aisle."
Cloud gently placed his hands on her waist. He realized that it was time to tell her.
"There's something I want to talk about."
"What's wrong?" she asked as she placed her hands on his shoulders.
"I know who your father is," Cloud said.
Aerith nearly collapsed. "M-my dad?" she stammered. "H-how did you find out?"
"After we thought you died, we went through some abandoned mines and eventually ended up in Icicle Inn."
"The northernmost town?" she replied. "I heard about that place. Not that I'd ever want to visit there."
"You were born there," Cloud informed her.
"I-I was born there?!" she exclaimed in surprise. "I thought I was born in Midgar."
"We went into one of the houses," he continued. "It turned out it used to be a lab that belonged to Dr. Faremis."
"The scientist?" Aerith asked. "Did he do experiments on me?"
"No," Cloud replied. "He didn't do any experiments. He left behind some recorded videos that we saw. He was...interviewing your biological mother about your race."
"Are you sure it was my mother?" she asked.
"Was her name Ifalna?"
She nodded. "Yeah, that was her. Did he...do something to her?"
Cloud shook his head.
"He didn't do experiments on her?"
Cloud again shook his head.
"Please tell me he didn't rape her."
"No," he said. "As far as I can tell, it was consensual."
Aerith felt her heart beginning to race. She realized what he was trying to tell her.
"You're not saying Gast Faremis could be my father, are you?"
"I'm saying he is your father."
Aerith immediately released herself from his grasp, quickly walked over to a seat, and sat down.
"Sorry," she said, "I need to sit down."
Cloud joined her at the table.
Her eyes became wet, and she wiped the potential tears away.
"I know he's passed on," she began. "But I can't remember him for the life of me."
"You were less than a month old," Cloud continued. "He had every intention of raising you. He even named you after his grandmother."
Aerith dried another tear and forced a giggle.
"I'll be okay," she assured him. "I always knew in my heart that my father was dead. I mean, why else wouldn't he come looking for me?"
Cloud nodded. "I'm sorry," he apologized. "I didn't mean to drop this on you."
She placed his hand on his and smiled. "Don't be," she assured him. "Do you have any idea how long I've wanted to know this?" She then got up from her seat, straddled Cloud's lap, and hugged him tight. "I love you," she whispered.
She continued to hold him close and gently stoke his back for several moments. But, unfortunately, all things must change.
"I have to pee," she announced as she got up off his lap. "I'll be back."
Cloud watched as she disappeared up the stairwell.
A few moments later, he did indeed hear someone coming down the stairs. But it was not Aerith; it was Elmyra.
"Aerith told me how good of a boyfriend you've been to her," Elmyra said as she sat down next to him. "I don't know how my daughter got so lucky, but I can never thank you enough for it."
"No problem," Cloud said. "I've grown really attached to your daughter."
Elmyra smiled. "Your glass has been empty the whole time," she pointed out.
"I know," he said. "I don't drink wine."
"Do you have a job lined up?" she asked.
"I'm a mercenary," he replied. "On a job that ran away with itself."
"What about something more steady?" she asked.
"I'd like that," Cloud replied.
"Sorry," she apologized. "I'm just asking mom questions."
"It's okay," Cloud assured her.
"She is all I have."
"I will make sure I have a decent job once this is all over," he promised. "I won't let her down."
Elmyra smiled.
"Are you going to go back to Nibelheim once Sephiroth is taken care of?" she asked.
"No," Cloud replied. "It's time for me to move forward in my life."
"Where will you go, then?"
"Wherever Aerith wants," he answered.
"That's good," Elmyra said. "Because she'll go wherever you want, too."
There was a brief silence. Then, Cloud realized that there was something he wanted to ask her.
"Does she really want to marry me?" he asked.
Elmyra smiled and happily nodded.
"I thought so," he said. "But I was hoping I was right."
"Cloud," continued Elmyra, "Aerith's crazy about you! I've never seen her this way about a boy before."
He smiled.
Then the smiled faded. He was now certain this girl was committed to him. There was something he had been thinking about doing ever since he found her again. Now he decided that it would be time to do it.
THE NEXT DAY...
Cloud and Aerith were walking hand in hand down the boardwalk at Costa del Sol. He had told her they were going to play games on the boardwalk and grab a bite at one of the concession stands before swimming. Little did she know that he actually had other plans.
She first became suspicious when he stopped her in front of a doorway. It looked familiar to her, as it did to most of the world.
"I know this place," Aerith said quietly. "This was President Shinra's summer home."
"Exactly," Cloud replied. "The most luxurious house in town."
"If not the world," she added.
He then approached the door as Aerith gave him a perplexed look.
"I really don't think there's anybody home," she said.
Suddenly, and much to her surprise, he pulled a key from his pocket and opened the door.
"Where did you get that?!" she gasped.
Cloud simply smiled and led her inside.
Her eyes were greeted by a large foyer before he led her through a huge kitchen, dining-room, and parlor, before stopping in what appeared to be a conservatory.
She then turned to him, and look him in the eyes. She was suspecting something, but she had to be certain.
"Where are we?" she asked.
"Your new home," Cloud replied.
"Here?!" Aerith exclaimed. "But how?!"
"I bought it," he said.
"Seriously?" she gasped, still in disbelief.
"Seriously," he answered. "It's been on the market since he was killed."
"How could you afford it?"
"I met a lot of corpses with deep pockets," he truthfully explained.
Aerith stood in silence for a moment. She had certainly not seen this coming, and was still trying to take everything in. She had never lived in a place this huge. Then, she realized something else.
"Cloud?" she asked hopefully. "Is this your new home, too?"
"You bet," he replied.
Aerith could not describe the joy she was feeling. She had no idea what to say.
So she leapt into his arms and wrapped her legs around his waist instead.
THAT NIGHT….
Cloud and Aerith stood on opposite sides of their king-sized bed. He was bare-chested and wearing a pair of sweats, while she was wearing a white tank top with a pair of black pajama bottoms that had pink flowers on them.
It was hard for Cloud to describe what she looked like; soft, playful, innocent. He continued to gaze at her, as she was still beautiful, even in her pajamas.
"You okay?" she asked, noticing.
"I've just never seen you in pajamas before," Cloud replied.
"I always wear them whenever the vag isn't out," Aerith giggled as she climbed into the bed and under the covers.
"How did I get so lucky?" she asked.
Cloud smiled as he turned off the light and joined her.
Aerith placed her arm around him and nestled her head against his bare chest.
"I love you," she said.
"I love you," he replied.
"Is something else on your mind?" she asked. "I'm getting that vibe again."
"Just the White Materia," he said. "Why it wasn't glowing and all."
Aerith kissed him.
"Just hold me for now," she said. "We'll go back to the altar tomorrow and investigate."
Moments later, they were both asleep in each other's arms.
