Chapter 65: Return to the Altar
Cloud awoke.
The warmth greeted his face as his eyes opened. There was no breeze, and the sun shone in the cloudless, blue sky.
He slowly sat up. Looking around, he noticed that he was in some sort of a meadow. Butterflies were everywhere. There were also bees. It was clear that he was outdoors, surrounded by a natural setting.
He stood on his feet. The grass of the meadow grew so tall it nearly came up to his chest. He could also see reeds and flowers. This was a beautiful place; it was quite peaceful and tranquil.
And yet, he felt a strange aura of sadness surrounding him. He could not put his finger on it; he simply felt sad to be here, and could not figure out why. It was as if there was a sudden, terrible ache in his heart.
"Wait a minute," he muttered to himself. "This can't be real. I should be in a king-sized bed in Costa del Sol."
It seemed real, however. He figured that it was a dream, but this seemed more real than one. He felt much more aware, and he had clear senses of sight, smell, sound, and touch.
In one direction, there was a path. He could see that the path curved to the left a few yards ahead of him. To the left of the curve was a shrub, which was the only feature that really seemed to stand out.
At that moment, he awoke for real. He sat up in bed, and wondered about the dream he had just had. It was quite strange; he was in such a peaceful place, yet he was sad. It made no sense at all.
He then turned his head to find an empty spot in the bed where Aerith had been sleeping the previous night. He looked towards the bathroom, where the door was wide open, but nobody was inside.
Just then, his nose caught the smell of bacon. Realizing the situation, he got up out of bed and headed towards the kitchen.
Aerith was there, with her back turned to Cloud, occupied at the stove. She was softly humming to herself. What got more of Cloud's attention, though, was that fact that she was only wearing her pajama pants and nothing else. Her beautiful, bare back stood out to him, and upon noticing that he had entered the kitchen, she turned her head and smiled briefly, before she went over to him, placed her hands on his shoulders, and kissed him.
"Good morning, sunshine!" she greeted.
"What are you doing?" asked Cloud.
"Making breakfast!" Aerith replied cheerfully as she returned to the stove. "Topless!"
Cloud was silent. He did not see that coming, nor had he bothered to notice her discarded tank top on the bedroom floor.
"Yeah, I know," Aerith continued with a smile. "I needed to free the twin peaks!"
"No complaints," replied Cloud happily.
Aerith smiled. "You can expect to see me in all sorts of states of undress around the house," she replied. "When I'm not staying with my mom, I tend to stroll the house wearing just my pants or, on rarer occasions, just my shirt."
Cloud sat down at the table as the topless Aerith finished breakfast. She then joined him.
"What a great feeling!" she sighed.
"What?" asked Cloud, though he already knew the answer.
"To be able to make breakfast with my girls hanging out. They kind of felt restrained," she giggled. "I wonder how girls with bigger boobs deal with it. Poor Tifa."
Cloud was silent again. As happy as he was at the moment, he could not help but wonder how Tifa was doing. He hoped that she was okay.
"Cloud," began Aerith, "there's something I've been wanting to ask you."
"Go ahead," he approved.
"That future you remember," she began, "what are we like?"
Cloud felt his stomach tighten. He understood that she had still not realized her original fate.
"You said you were thirty," Aerith continued. "That would make us all a lot older. Barret would be in his forties."
Cloud said nothing. He knew he had to tell her sometime, sooner rather than later. It would not be fair to keep it from her. But now she was in such a good mood, and he could not bear to spoil it.
"And Tifa would be twenty-nine," she added. "Did she ever find somebody?"
Cloud nodded. "She did. She got married to a guy named Bo."
"Oh, how nice!" Aerith exclaimed. "Well, that's nice." She paused. "But what about us, Cloud? Are we married? Do we have any kids?"
"Well," he began. This was it. He would have to tell her. He dreaded it. He had no idea how she would take it, but he knew she would be upset.
She placed her hand on his and smiled at him hopefully.
He tried again. "We..."
"Wait, don't," Aerith stopped him. "I want it to be a surprise."
"No problem," Cloud said, feeling somewhat relieved.
"But I always wanted a son and a daughter," Aerith said. "I hope we have both. If only I could see the future the way you can." She then took another look at her exposed breasts. "And I wish my boobs were like Tifa's," she said.
They ate through breakfast before Aerith remembered that Cloud seemed uneasy.
"So what was on your mind last night?" she asked.
"I know what you were doing on the altar that night," Cloud began.
"Where did you hear about that, anyway?" she asked.
"Bugenhagen explained it to us," Cloud replied. "He said how Holy and to be prayed for and all that. But, here's where things get complicated. In the original timeline, the Materia glowed green after you used it. But in this timeline, it didn't."
"Hmm," Aerith replied. "I really wouldn't worry about it. I think Meteor just needs to get closer. Either that, or maybe it did glow and that we didn't see it."
She then stood stood up and pulled Cloud to his feet as well. She took both of his hands and smiled at him.
"But if it gives you peace of mind, we'll try it again."
Aerith then released him, turned around, and walked a few feet away. She stood with her back turned to Cloud for a few moments. She then dropped her pajama pants and panties to the floor, stepped out of them, and stretched.
"I think I need a shower," she said. "You can join me."
Cloud grinned.
"If you can catch me!" she added.
She then playfully ran to the shower with Cloud in pursuit.
Sure enough, he caught her, and carried her into the shower. They bathed each other, kissing deeply when Aerith bathed his penis, and kissing deeply again when Cloud bathed her vagina.
They then finished showering, and dried each other off.
Cloud made his way to the sink and began brushing his teeth.
Aerith made her way to the toilet and sat down.
"So I was thinking," she began, "want to go to the boardwalk tonight?"
"Thats sounds like a good idea," Cloud replied as he continued to brush.
"We'll just have to get home before the gale comes!" she laughed.
And then, Cloud heard something he had never heard before; he heard Aerith beginning to urinate.
That was strange; she had to really be comfortable with him in order to do that.
"We'll wear what we worse last time," Aerith suggested as she continued to pee, "and maybe we can get a little naughty on the bench."
"I like," he said.
"You okay?" she asked.
"Just fine," he replied.
THAT AFTERNOON...
Cloud was silent during the entire flight to the Forgotten Capital; he still had it on his mind. Aerith had died in the original timeline, yet she had still not yet figured that out. It would be wrong of him to keep it from her; she had a right to know. He was still figuring out how and when to tell her.
"What's on you mind?" Aerith asked, noticing the silence.
"It's nothing," Cloud insisted. He could not have her shut down when she needed to save the world.
"Is this about what happened after the shower?" she pressed.
It was not the time to tell her yet; she could not be distracted. So he nodded.
"Cloud," Aerith began, "I didn't think it would bother you. Lots of girls pee in front of their boyfriends when they've been together long enough."
"I'm just not used to it, I guess," he said.
She silently went behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist.
He could not wait for this day to end.
LATER...
Cloud led Aerith down the long stairway to the ruins under the ruins. He did not want to be there, and it seemed as if she did not, either. The last time he had been here, he had thought he had watched her die on the altar that was dead in his view. The death might have been fake, but his grief that night was not. He still remembered the emptiness he had felt as if it was yesterday.
Aerith clutched his hand and realized that both of their palms were sweaty. She remembered nearly being killed there, and it was something she had wanted to put out of her mind. Ever since she was a girl, she had been pursued. Her pursuers, however, only wanted to capture here. That night on the altar was the first time anyone had attempted to actually take her life.
"Well," he said, as they reached the bottom of the stairs, "here we are."
Aerith kissed him and led him to the altar, attempting to make the best of the situation.
"Where did my White Materia go, anyway?" she asked, recalling that her eyes had been closed when she had faked her death.
"It's somewhere in the water," Cloud replied.
"The water?" she asked.
Cloud nodded. "You flung your head and the White Materia fell from your hair."
"Well," she said, "we can't just leave it there, can we?"
He shook his head. He then peered over the altar.
"I can find it if I dive in," he said. He then prepared to jump.
"Wait!" Aerith exclaimed.
Cloud turned to face her.
"Have you ever gone skinny dipping?" she asked.
He shook his head.
"That's about to change," she continued with a smirk.
He gave her a look. This was hardly the time or place to be thinking of such things.
"You get your clothes wet," she insisted, "and you might get sick."
He knew she simply wanted another glimpse of his body, but he declined to resist. It was just the two of them, and he wanted to waste no more time. He quickly discarded his shirt and pants and jumped naked into the pool below.
Aerith watched his nude figure swim below the waters, examining the floor. A few moments later, he re-emerged, with a familiar-looking object in his hand.
"That's the one," she said with a smile.
Cloud climbed back onto the altar and handed the White Materia to his girlfriend.
"What now?" he asked.
"I'll pray again," Aerith replied as she knelt as before. "But you're naked, so you need to get off the altar. This is sacred ground, you know."
"Can't I just put my clothes back on?" he protested.
"No way!" she playfully exclaimed. "You have to dry off first. You're drenched!"
Defeated, he left the altar and returned to the concrete path.
"Cloud?" she called. "These jeans are low-cut. My butt crack isn't hanging out, is it? Again, this is sacred ground."
He turned around. "You're good," he assured her.
Aerith then began to pray as she had the previous time as Cloud looked on.
The White Materia was still simply white.
"I don't know why it's not glowing," Aerith said, after opening her eyes.
"This isn't good," Cloud sighed.
"We'll figure something out," she assured him. "Maybe I can only cast it once. Honestly, I think it did glow and we just didn't notice."
He looked down. He felt that she was probably right, but he was hoping to leave the ruins certain.
"Come on!" she insisted. "Let's stop worrying and plan our future together!" She paused. "Again."
That did it.
Cloud silently sat down.
Alarmed, Aerith sat down next to him.
"It'll be fine!" she continued. "You have to trust me."
"It's not that," Cloud mumbled.
She placed a hand on his shoulder.
"What is it then?" she asked.
Cloud looked at her in the eyes.
She could see that they were wet, and her heart began to beat faster.
"We aren't together in the future," he said sadly.
Aerith suddenly turned pale. Her mouth began to dry, and her hands began to tremble.
"We broke up?!" she exclaimed. Her eyes quickly became as wet as Cloud's.
He was sadly silent.
"Oh, no, no, no!" Aerith protested as she shook her head. "I told you I would never leave you unless you abused me, and I'm sticking to that!"
Cloud looked at her again, and gently placed a hand on her cheek.
"You didn't dump me," he droned.
"You dumped me?!" Aerith exclaimed in shock. "But...what did I do wrong?!"
Cloud opened his mouth and began to speak, but Aerith cut him off.
"Whatever it was, I won't do it!" she continued. "I promise! Just tell me what it was and I won't do it! Not ever!"
"Aerith," Cloud began softly, "You didn't do anything wrong. It was..."
He could not finish.
But he did not have to. Slowly, she realized why they were not together in the future if they did not break up. Slowly, she realized why the premonitions stopped after she left the altar. Slowly, she realized why she was no longer part of anyone's premonitions. She began to tremble.
"The altar!" Aerith exclaimed in a shaky voice. "In the original timeline, I never got the Phase Materia! There was nothing faked that time! It was all real!" She looked at the altar. "I really died up there!"
Tears began to stream down her face.
She clutched the still-naked Cloud, digging her fingers in, almost enough to break skin.
"Oh God," she sobbed. "I need to get out of here. I NEED TO GET OUT OF HERE NOW!"
Cloud silently stood on his feet and helped her up.
"You can put your clothes on first," Aerith said, forcing a giggle.
ON THE FLIGHT HOME...
The flight home was silent. Aerith stood next to the now-clothed Cloud, who was piloting the Highwind. There was so much she wanted to say, and so much she didn't at the same time. She wanted to sit down, but she remained standing. She almost felt like a zombie. She had been delivered news that she had never expected to hear in her life. She wanted to describe it as bad news, but, as far as she could tell, this experience was unique to her. She thus had no idea what to call it.
All of a sudden, a shadow was cast over the Highwind. Cloud looked up to see a familiar and unpleasant visitor.
A purple-black winged creature was bearing down on them.
"What is that?!" Aerith exclaimed.
"Ultima Weapon," Cloud replied. "That's the one that attacked Mideel while you were gone."
"Was it bad?" she asked.
"It practically destroyed the town," he answered.
Aerith looked up to see Ultima Weapon beginning to open its mouth, as if it was about to attack.
"Can you outrun it?" she asked.
"By a mile," Cloud assured her.
Aerith could see him adjusting the speed, but it was what she heard that took her attention. As the creature's mouth opened, a piercing ringing began in her ears. It suddenly grew louder, causing her to clutch her head as if it was going to explode. And she collapsed.
"Aerith!" Cloud shouted.
He wanted to come to her aid, but he needed to pilot the Highwind away from the creature before it destroyed them both.
He did not stop until they arrived in Costa del Sol. He looked towards the sky and saw no sign of Ultima Weapon. Realizing that they were out of anger, he ran over to his girlfriend and helped her to her feet.
"I'm okay," Aerith assured him. "But it looks like I can't be near that thing!"
"What happened?" he asked.
"I don't know," she answered. "I just heard a ringing and ended up with a splitting headache."
"Really?" asked Cloud. "I didn't feel anything."
She sighed. "It's probably because I'm a Cetra," she suggested. "We're sensitive to certain sounds, so..."
She then collapsed again. This time, it was due to her emotional state.
THAT NIGHT...
Aerith sat in her pajamas on the couch. She had been crying again, and Cloud kept her nestled against him. She still could not get it out of her head; she had been killed in the original timeline.
She was killed.
She almost felt as if she was living a lie. She was not supposed to be alive. She was alive this time because history had been changed. She almost felt unnatural.
"Aerith, what can I do?" Cloud gently asked as he rubbed her shoulders. "To make you feel better."
"Nothing," she replied as she shook her head. "Just like what I'm supposed to be right now."
Another tear rolled down her cheek. At this point, her eyes were red.
"Aerith," he began as he gently stroked her hair. "You're alive and well." He then placed his hand on her chest. "See? I feel your heartbeat."
Aerith tried to smile, but she could not. It was beyond a death sentence; she had learned that she was supposed to be dead, and was only alive because of a fluke in time travel.
"I don't know what to feel," she said. "I don't know. I just don't know."
A few moments later, she could not feel anything, because she had fallen asleep.
Cloud softly picked her up and carried her to bed.
