“I was right,” I said to him as he led me toward the diagnostics rooms.
“About?” Hojo’s black eyes sought mine.
“You’ll pamper me shamelessly.” I referred to the way he’d escorted me around all morning, getting me things and dressing me himself. “I comforted myself with that idea while alone.”
Hojo stopped. He suddenly just picked me up. “This is shameless pampering,” he informed, nodding to a passing, wide-eyed orderly. “Let me know if I get irritating; I go to extremes.”
“I had no idea, truly,” I teased.
His eyes slid down to mine. His lips twitched. “Ah, I do so enjoy a double-handful of trouble,” he murmured. “I can die happy now, knowing my best investment became unfathomably lucrative in the return.”
I rested my head on his chest, observing how the people passing all wore expressions of startlement. “I think Sephiroth did learn his formality from you,” I told him. “Did you know he smokes?”
“A new habit,” Hojo said. “Good. It won’t hurt him. His cell turn over is even more rapid than mine. He has to eat constantly.”
“Why is it good that he has a new habit?”
“Shows he’s becoming more flexible.” Hojo kicked open the door to diagnostics and entered. “Five minute shutdown warning,” he shouted into the busily-occupied room, causing a flurry of activity. No one wanted to lose whatever project currently occupied. Hojo set me on a table, leaned his hip on it and crossed his arms while staring down at me. Ignoring the chaos he’d caused, he smiled. “I’m sure you’ve done all you could to make sure our children are healthy and happy. Don’t think less of me for wanting to verify your prenatal care. Mako-engineered children require a lot of watching.”
“It makes me feel wonderful to have you instead of Pellan,” I vowed. “I only ever wanted you.” Putting my hand out, I touched the crook of his arm. “You’re their father, I love you, and you’re the best.”
Hojo closed his eyes.
“One minute!” he shouted.
The panic increased. Papers fell to the floor, document chips rattled and voices cried out. I should have felt bad for causing all this commotion, but I felt smug instead. That’s right, I thought. He’s mine and I have the power.
When the door finally closed and the last bit of paper drifted to the tile, Hojo opened his eyes. He must have caught something in my expression, for he chuckled. “I love your inner tyrant,” he whispered. “I hope you enjoy your power, because it’s an eternal reign.” Stretching me out, he reached for the buttons on my dress.
“Better give me a paper gown,” I said, helping him disrobe me. “I want Sephiroth to see the children, too.”
Hojo smiled. Eyes warm, he finished undressing me. “Why not the whole family, my dear?” Carefully, he draped a paper sheet over me and secured it down firmly with a few clips. “Though, I would enjoy looking at your nakedness.” Leaning over me, he put his palm to my cheek. “My arms and lips found our reunion blissful. I hope I can express that in other ways very soon.”
“I’m looking forward to it,” I said quietly, feeling a spark of desire for him ignite. My sex drive seemed stimulated by my pregnancy. Now, I had an outlet for my urges. “In the meantime, shall we invite everyone in for the viewing?”
“On it,’ Hojo replied cheerfully, hailing his former pets one by one. He informed them of his location and asked them to come here. He then began fiddling with the machine that would scan my belly. He stopped suddenly, pressing his hand over his eyes. A shudder went through him. Straightening, he went back to work, his eyes somber.
I didn’t have to ask what he’d thought about. Plain enough the last time he’d done this left an impression. “Hey,” I said to him quietly. He looked at me with speed. I smiled. “I’m not running off with anyone, nor will Aiko and Kai become super-SOLDIER’s.”
“Right,” he said in a firm tone. “Only science for these children.” He winked. “And, if I see a Turk looking at you, he’s going into the evaporators.”

Everyone assembled. None of my pet-friends even knew I’d returned, which made for a brief explosion of emotion in the diagnostics lab. Sephiroth stood far away from the others, looking uncomfortable as I downplayed my reasons for leaving and my reasons for coming back.
“I made her leave,” he announced tightly after I deflected another question. “It was my fault.”
Michael narrowed his eyes at the god-like general.
Sephiroth returned the glare. “I brought her back, too,” he said in a warning tone.
Hojo coughed. I heard a laugh in that cough.
“Everyone ready?” he asked. “Victoria?”
“Yes,” we all answered at once.
The seven by five monitor illuminated, displaying my children for all to see. The rush of them swallowing amniotic fluid and my heartbeat filled the room. Tears came to my eyes. They were much easier to see with this machine, and so detailed. As I watched, Aiko put her fist out toward Kai, pushing against her sac and his. Kai’s tiny fist came for hers. They touched, only separated by the thin membranes that suspended them.
Alison made a little, choked sound. “Oh! They know!”
“Looking for each other,” Michael said softly. “This is as close as two people can be, really.”
Hojo left the monitor to stand beside me. I reached for his hand as he reached for mine.
I’d read about people ‘sharing moments’.
This moment seemed an eternity of happiness. Hojo stroked my hair, leaned down and kissed my forehead. “Nothing but the best for them, Victoria,” he whispered. “I swear it. In sixteen weeks or less, you’ll be reprimanding me for indulging them.”
Sephiroth gave a laugh. The babies stirred in excitement. I reached my hand back toward him. “Sephiroth,” I said. “Would you come closer?”
Obedient, but in a way reminiscent of Jean’s earlier days, Sephiroth stood on my other side. His carefully guarded eyes questioned me. “Yes?” Just a touch of impatience and discomfort in that tone. The babies heard him and moved.
Hojo laughed. “Your youngest fans,” he commented.
“They’ve heard you often,” I explained to Sephiroth’s scowling face. “They know you. Watch the monitor when you speak.”
“How can they hear me overtop that fluid and your heartbeat?” he asked, but he watched the monitor. As they responded to him, he took his glove off and touched my right side.
We watched Aiko push toward him eagerly.
Sephiroth’s face softened. He looked over me, finding his father’s eyes. “These are my siblings,” he said. “Will they look like me?”
“Maybe.” Hojo put his hand to my other side. Kai, after a moment, moved toward him.
Sephiroth nodded and stepped back. “Let’s hope neither of them are prematurely grey,” he muttered, striding off.
We all waited a few seconds before giggling, just to make certain he’d truly left. Hojo, only smiling, continued to watch the monitor. “My children.” His soft, wondering tone held tenderness and pride. “My beautiful, beautiful children.”
