Chapter 67: The Death Penalty
The sun shone directly over Costa del Sol at noon the next day. Cloud was ready to head out; he had everything already planned. He would lure Ultima Weapon to a mountaintop and force it into a final showdown.
Aerith, meanwhile, was still in her pajamas. She was feeling frustrated inside, but she was aware that she did not have a choice. Whatever it was about her, she could not be near the creature.
"I can do this again when it's destroyed," she said. "I promise."
"I know," Cloud assured her.
"This would be a good time to test the Knights of the Round," Aerith suggested. "We'll see how powerful it is."
"Good idea," he said as he pulled her in for a hug. He then kissed her mouth.
As Cloud shut the door and stepped outside, he realized something that he had failed to consider.
"It'll be hard to fight that thing while piloting the Highwind," he said to himself. Being that as it may, he had no other choice.
As he began to make for the Highwind, he suddenly heard a tapping sound. He quickly turned to see Aerith standing in the window, giggling.
Before he could say anything, she gripped the bottom of her tank top, lifted it up, and flashed him.
Cloud smiled and air-kissed her.
She air-kissed him back, and then pulled her tank top completely off and tossed it aside. She then turned around and walked away with her hand on her hip.
He watched, waiting for her to slip off her pants, but, instead, she disappeared into the other room.
She had teased him.
Of course, nobody else saw.
LATER THAT MORNING...
Sephiroth awoke. The lack of a breeze informed him that he was indoors. As the world came into focus, he could see furnishings that traditionally belonged to a bedroom. He could also tell that he was in a bed, and under several layers of blankets.
He got up, and took a look out the window. The first thing he saw was a lake. The water was completely frozen. In every other direction, there was white as far as the eyes could see. He still could not see the Northern Crater, but he figured that he had to be close.
"You're up!" announced a voice.
Sephiroth turned to see the man on the snowmobile.
"You were the one who found me?"
"You bet," the man said. "The name's Buran."
"Where is this?" asked Sephiroth.
"This is our homestead," Buran replied. "Where we hunt seals and ship the meat off."
"You have a family here?"
"I sure do," Buran answered. "We hold a world record. Nobody lives further north than us."
Sephiroth was silent. He had little interest in listening to this man's life story.
"You might want to shower," Buran added. "My family's downstairs waiting to meet you."
Sephiroth nearly wanted to get his sword and end the man's life over the insult, but he restrained himself. If what he was looking for was indeed downstairs, his hygiene needed to be perfect.
THAT AFTERNOON...
Cloud had just finished patrolling the Western Continent without success. He knew Ultima Weapon had to be somewhere. There were other continents and islands to verify, and his target was always on the move, thus rendering his task rather difficult.
He still had the dream about the meadow on his mind. He had never in his life had a dream that had felt so real, and he certainly had never felt sad in once before. Even when he had a nightmare as a child, he was not frightened, as he somehow knew that it was only a nightmare and nothing else; he could even awaken at will. The dream he had had a couple of nights ago was significantly different.
As Cloud flew over a waterfall, he noticed the wreckage of a motor boat. Curiosity gripped him toward it, like a moth to a flame. He doubted that he would find anything useful in the wreckage, but he knew it would be wise to check.
He slowly landed the Highwind near the cataract and stepped out. The wreckage, sure enough, did not have anything worth finding. What caught Cloud's attention, however, the mouth of a cave. It was mostly hidden behind the waterfall, but it did become visible every few seconds. He wondered if whoever owned the motorboat had survived, and was in there. He quickly returned to the Highwind and took his sword, as he was unsure of whom the boat belonged to.
As soon as he entered the cave, Cloud, to his surprise, saw someone he knew. The long, dark hair gave it away.
"Vincent!" he greeted.
Vincent turned around.
"Cloud?!" he exclaimed in surprise. "You found me?"
"I saw your boat," Cloud replied. "Or what was left."
"I took a trip over the falls," Vincent informed him. "I made it. My boat didn't. But what are you doing here, anyway?"
"I'm going after Ultima Weapon," Cloud replied.
"The creature that attacked Mideel when you were a vegetable?"
"Yeah," Cloud answered. "That's the one. But now that we're on the subject, what are you doing here?"
"Remember that girl I told you about?" Vincent asked. "That one who I told you was dead?"
Cloud nodded.
"She's alive," Vincent said. "I felt her calling me to here."
"Hence the wrecked motorboat outside the falls?"
"You got it," Vincent said.
"You're trying to win her back?" Cloud asked.
"I never had her to begin with," Vincent replied. "She was something I cloud never have. It just took me an eternity to accept it."
"Well, you'll never guess who else is alive," Cloud said.
"Who?"
"Aerith."
Vincent acted less than shocked.
"How did she survive?"
"Phase Materia," Cloud replied. "It made her ghostly while Sephiroth was stabbing her so it couldn't make her into a real ghost."
"Are you two together again?" he asked.
"We are," Cloud replied.
"Hmmm," Vincent said. He was silent after that.
"So what are we doing here, anyway?" asked Cloud. "If you never had her, are you trying to get her for the first time?"
"I don't know if I would even want to try," Vincent answered.
"What do you mean?"
"There are two types of love," Vincent said. "One is based on chemistry and sex. The other is based on trust and loyalty. Only one of them works. Unfortunately, Lucrecia's choice didn't."
"Then there's something else, isn't there?" Cloud asked.
"I have a feeling on where to find her," Vincent suggested, ignoring the question.
With that, they proceeded deeper into the cave.
SOMEWHERE ELSE...
Sephiroth stood in the parlor as four people were facing him.
"This is my wife, Anna," Buran introduced.
"Hello," greeted a short-haired blonde woman in her early forties.
"This is our son, Ralph," Buran continued.
"Hi there," said a boy of about twelve. He looked nearly identical to Anna.
"And this is our daughter, Sophie."
"It's nice to meet you," she greeted. Sophie was a brunette, and looked about eighteen or maybe nineteen.
Sephiroth smiled. He had found precisely what he had been looking for.
LATER THAT DAY...
Cloud and Vincent came to a room that was deep in the cave. They were now on a circular platform, with what appeared to be some kind of altar at the end. Beyond that was empty cave as far as the eye could see.
"Sephiroth," the woman whispered.
"That voice?" Vincent muttered. "It can't be Lucrecia!"
The woman quickly spun around.
"Vincent?" she called.
"Lucrecia!" Vincent shouted as he began to run in her direction.
"Stay back!" ordered Lucrecia.
Vincent stopped right where he was at.
"Lucrecia," he began, you're alive."
Lucrecia looked down, avoiding eye contact.
"I wanted to disappear," she sighed. "I couldn't be with anyone; I wanted to die."
Vincent looked at her with empathy.
"But the Jenova inside me wouldn't let me die," Lucretia continued. "Lately, I dream a lot of Sephiroth." She looked to the roof of the cave. "My dear, dear child. Ever since he was born, I never got to hold him. Not even once. You can't call me his mother." She looked to the floor again. "That is my sin."
Vincent cautiously took a step forward.
"Back!" Lucretia barked. "Stay back!"
Vincent stopped again.
"Vincent?" she suddenly said in a calm voice. "Won't you please tell me?"
"What?"
"If Sephiroth is still alive?" she replied in a shaky voice. "I heard that he died five years ago, but I see him in my dreams so often, and I know that physically, like myself, he can't die so easily." She gave him one more desperate look. "Please, Vincent, tell me."
Cloud took a step forward. Of all people, this would not be an easy thing to explain to her.
At that moment, Vincent raised his arm, as if to warn Cloud not to speak.
Cloud duly obeyed, unable to imagine the consequences of angering Vincent.
"Lucrecia," Vincent said, "Sephiroth is dead."
"Oh," sighed Lucrecia before giving Vincent a broken look. She then disappeared.
"You saw her, too," Vincent said, as he turned to Cloud.
"What she a ghost?"
"Yes and no."
"Yes and no?" asked the perplexed Cloud.
"She's still alive," Vincent explained. "She's imprisoned in this cave. What we saw was a projection. Nobody can find her physical body."
"Who put her here?" Cloud asked.
"She did," he replied.
"Can she be freed?"
"I don't know," answered Vincent. "I guess she could if she wanted to, which she doesn't."
Suddenly, the two of them were greeted by a blinding flash of light. When it was gone, what looked like a revolver lay where Lucrecia had been.
"What is it?" Cloud asked.
"The Death Penalty," Lucrecia's echoing voice suddenly announced.
Both Cloud and Vincent looked around the cave. There was no apparition; the voice seemed to be disembodied.
Vincent cautiously walked over to it and picked it up.
"Where did this come from?" he asked.
"I made it," Lucrecia replied. "I wanted to kill myself, so I made it. It took me a month to create such a thing. By then, I had decided that living with my guilt was a better punishment."
"This is what you came here for, isn't it?" Cloud asked.
Vincent nodded. He then picked up the Death Penalty, aimed it at a stalactite hanging from the roof of the cave, and pulled the trigger. An explosion sounded before the stalactite came crashing to the floor.
"Holy shit!" Cloud exclaimed.
"Now imagine if I hit organic flesh with that," Vincent said.
"Well," said Cloud, "now that you bring that up, remember the reason I was flying over was because I was going after Ultima Weapon."
"The what?" asked Vincent.
"The creature that attacked Mideel," Cloud clarified.
Vincent stood silently for a moment, as if he was pondering something.
"I'll join you," he then offered. "The Death Penalty might come in handy when we meet Ultima Weapon again."
Cloud was surprised. "You're ready to rejoin me?" he asked.
"I think so," Vincent replied.
"You don't have to if you're not ready," Cloud said. "I think Knights of the Round can kill it in one blow."
"You'll never know," Vincent warned.
"Well then," Cloud agreed, "welcome back. I'm sure Aerith will be happy to see you. And it looks like Ultima Weapon's as good as dead."
"We'll just have to wait until tomorrow," Vincent said.
"Come again?" asked Cloud.
"We can only pursue it in the light. We won't be able to see it in the dark too well. I know how those summons work. If you cast Knights of the Round and miss, you'll have to wait a whole day to use it again. We don't have enough time."
THAT EVENING...
The stars were already out by the time Cloud returned to the house. He was somewhat disappointed, but Vincent was right; they had to be able to see Ultima Weapon in broad daylight. As a summon could only be used once every twenty-four hours, every shot counted.
Cloud entered the house to find his girlfriend waiting for him, standing in the parlor. Aerith was dressed in a mahogany baby shirt and black leggings.
"Hey!" she greeted as she placed her hands on his shoulders and kissed him. "Is he dead?"
He shook his head and decided to tell the truth. "We lost sunlight. He's hard to see in the dark. I can only use Knights of the Round once a day, so..."
"Bummer," replied Aerith as she placed her hands on her backside.
"Vincent's back," Cloud announced.
"Nice," she said. "Where did you find him."
"Behind a waterfall," he answered. "Looking for his girlfriend."
She began to giggle. "Vincent Valentine has a girlfriend?"
"Sort of," Cloud replied. "Remember how he said Sephiroth's mother was actually a woman?"
"Oh yeah," she said.
"That was her," he continued. "She left behind a gun called the Death Penalty. The bullets explode on contact. We're going to use it on Ultima Weapon if Knights of the Round doesn't do the trick."
"When do you go?" she asked.
"We need to wait for daylight," Cloud replied. "Ultima Weapon will be gone by tomorrow evening."
Aerith smiled.
"In the meantime, I have a movie set up for us to watch," she then announced. "And takeout."
"Is it a chick flick?" asked Cloud, skeptically.
"Is that a problem?" she asked in the same tone of voice. She then took his hand and let him over to the couch. "Having a girlfriend's a package deal, babe," she said.
SOMEWHERE ELSE...
Buran's house was nearly completely dark. Dinner had been served, beverages had been drank, and small talk had been made. Sephiroth had told the family that he was a mariner whose ship had been destroyed by the ice. He had told everyone that his name was Joe Nova (an obvious Jenova reference, although none of Buran's family had caught it), and that he would join them in any seal hunts.
Now, everyone had gone to bed, except for Sophie. She was sitting across the table from him, with her beautiful brown eyes fixated on him.
Sephiroth's eyes were fixated on her. He realized that it might be easier than he had anticipated.
"You're really brave," Sophie complimented.
"Thank you," Sephiroth said.
"So how long will you stay with us?" she asked.
"I don't know," he replied. "I never expected my ship to get wrecked. I'll work on finding a way. I don't think I will be here that long."
Sophie continued to gaze at him.
"Where will you go?" she asked. "I mean, when you leave?"
"Probably to the Eastern Continent," Sephiroth replied. "I heard there are whales on the west coast. It's certainly safe than the ice. I've learned my lesson the hard way."
Sophie then stood up, and turned her back to him. She was wearing a pair of skinny jeans that hugged her hips and backside.
"Will you take me with you?" she asked.
Sephiroth realized that she was wearing them to get his attention. Unknown to Sophie, she did not have to.
"I want to get away from here," she continued. "I'm eighteen years old now, but I feel like I'm in jail."
Sephiroth stood up, and walked over towards Sophie until he was a few inches behind her.
"I've never had a normal life!" she said. "I've never had a friend or been to a birthday party. I've never even seen grass!" She placed her hands on her hips. "Now my dad's been talking about marrying me off. That might even be why he brought you here."
Sephiroth gently placed his hands on her shoulders. He could feel Sophie's hands gently resting on them.
"Will you take me away?" she asked.
In response, Sephiroth turned her to face him. His eyes made contact with hers.
"I will," he said. "Tomorrow."
Sophie took his left hand and held it in both of hers.
"Tomorrow will be the last morning I see here?" she asked hopefully.
"Tomorrow will be the last morning you see here," he said.
A moment later, they kissed.
MEANWHILE...
Aerith sat next to Cloud with tears streaming down her face as he pretended to console her.
"Sorry," she apologized. "I just can't believe he died without know his fiancé was pregnant."
Cloud rubbed her back gently. He had not been paying much attention to the movie, except for the sex scenes, and was relieved that it was over.
Aerith then became silent.
"I was just thinking about how you found Vincent today," she replied.
"I didn't see it coming," Cloud said. "It was a chance encounter, really."
"I wonder who else we'll find along the way," Aerith continued. "I really do hope everyone comes back. I want to see them all again."
She then got up, turned around, and sat down on Cloud's lap, straddling him.
"Sorry," she said with a smirk on her face, "But after watching all those people make out..."
And their lips met.
Aerith then placed her hands on his cheeks and kissed him more deeply, her tongue wresting with his. She then broke the kiss, and stepped back. She looked at her boyfriend and smiled seductively.
"I'm taking your pants off," she announced.
She then unzipped his pants and pulled them off, along with his boxers. After tossing them aside, she gripped the bottom of his shirt and pulled it over his head.
"Shirt as well," she added before tossing it aside.
Aerith then knelt down in front of him and smiled at him for a moment before taking his exposed penis into her mouth. Her head began to bob up and down.
Cloud found the sensation incredible. He could feel his girlfriend rolling her tongue on the tip. It was not too little, not too much.
After several minutes, Aerith removed herself from his manhood and looked him in the eyes.
"Stand up," she commanded.
Cloud stood up.
Aerith guided him into position, and sat down on the sofa. She then placed his erect penis in her mouth and continued to suck on it.
It lasted for over half an hour. Then, finally, Cloud orgasmed, firing his seed into Aerith's mouth.
She swallowed the contents and looked at him, smiling.
Cloud could tell her mouth was tired.
"You okay?" he asked.
Aerith nodded.
"I now understand the 'job' part of the term," she giggled.
