Chapter 69: Into the Woods
Aerith stood at the kitchen in her tank top and pajama bottoms, finishing washing her dishes. She felt happy; she was making breakfast for them every morning now, and slowly realizing what a wonderful housewife she would be. If only he would propose.
Cloud, meanwhile, was sitting quietly at the table. He was still in his boxers, and his half-eaten breakfast stood in front of him. He was eating it slowly because he had a lot on his mind.
"I had this dream last night," he began.
"Eat your breakfast," Aerith replied as she switched the water off. "It's the most important meal of the day."
He took a couple of more bites. "I had it a few nights before," he continued. "I've never had the same dream twice. I was out in a field with butterflies. But, for some reason, I was really sad."
"Why sad?" she asked as she approached him from behind and squeezed his shoulders.
"I don't know," he softly answered. "I just don't know."
In response, Aerith wrapped her arms around him and kissed him on the cheek.
"Be happy," she whispered. "Your girlfriend loves you to the moon and back."
LATER THAT MORNING...
Vincent was waiting inside the Highwind as Cloud and Aerith boarded.
"Vincent!" Aerith greeted as she saw him.
"Hello," he responded.
She threw her arms around Vincent, but he did not hug back. She did not take it personally; she was well aware of his reclusive nature.
An hour later, Cloud, Aerith, and Vincent stood at the edge of the Ancient Forest. From the outside, it looked like any other forest. Of course, that did not make Cloud feel any better. After all, the same could have been said about the Sleeping Forest.
"I'm ready when anyone else is," Vincent announced. "Unless anyone's afraid."
"Woods don't creep me out," Aerith assured him.
"That's right," Vincent said. "You did wander into the Sleeping Forest by yourself."
"Oh yeah," she said.
"So I've been wondering," Vincent continued, "How come you didn't fall asleep like we would have?"
Aerith shrugged. "Whatever the effect of that forest was, it didn't work on me."
"Because you're a Cetra?" Vincent pressed.
"Isn't that obvious?" she replied.
Upon entering the Ancient Forest, the three of them noticed that it was quite different from its counterpart on the Northern Continent. There were an abundance of frogs there, as well as insects the size of a hand. Curiously, there was also the possibility of carnivorous plants that they intruders had only read about in books.
The forest did not seem that big, either. Cloud had been expecting a maze of twisting trees, but there were paths and clearings everywhere.
Vincent was the first to grow skeptical.
"So Cloud," he began, "if this Quadra Magic is supposed to be in here, what guarantee do we have that nobody took it already?"
"Nobody can just come and take it," Aerith replied. "There's more to this forest than we see."
"It's a puzzle," said Cloud. "This whole forest is a puzzle."
Just then, Aerith shrieked.
Cloud turned to see a frog hopping off her shoe. Looking up, there was a giant insect buzzing about.
"You okay?" he asked.
"I don't like frogs!" Aerith exclaimed. "And I really don't like bugs!"
"What about carnivorous plants?" asked Vincent.
"Honestly," replied Aerith, "I've never seen one."
"Neither have I," Vincent said. "But I've hear giant ones exist in the most remove forests in the world. We might want to keep our eyes peeled."
The path split a few feet ahead. To the left, it seemed to become more elevated. To the right, it seemed to go downhill. The three of them took to the left. The path soon elevated, seemingly in the shape of an arch. As the path descended, an unpleasant sight greeted the three of them.
"That flytrap is humongous!" Aerith exclaimed.
Cloud immediately turned to Vincent.
"Have you been here before?" he asked.
"No," Vincent replied. "That was really just a guess."
"That thing couldn't eat a person, could it?" Aerith asked, in a somewhat nervous tone of voice.
"Probably," Vincent honestly replied.
"It think we need an alternate route," Cloud suggested.
"I know we need one," Aerith added.
They returned to where the path split and took the right one. This one actually went under the path that they had originally travelled. It then ended in a chasm just to the left of the flytrap.
"Well, this is going to be easy," Vincent announced sarcastically.
"You know," Aerith began, "we are going to have to get across somehow."
Meanwhile, Cloud looked around. There was an elevated piece of land to their left. Within jumping distance, there were three giant pitcher plants suspended above the flytrap. He could see one of the giant bugs flying around the giant pitcher plants. Then, it suddenly flew into the one that was the closest to them. The plant, in less than a second, sealed its top, dooming the poor insect that it had lured.
"I got it!" Cloud announced. "If we feed the pitcher plants, they'll close. We can then hop on them, cross them, and safely pass the flytrap."
"Will they be strong enough?" Vincent asked.
"One way to find out," Cloud replied.
He climbed the platform and cautiously placed his left foot on the sealed pitcher plant. Realizing that nothing was going to happen, he lifted himself to the top of the plant.
"Looks pretty good to me!" he announced.
And then, Aerith suddenly displayed a horrid look on her face.
"Cloud, be careful!" she warned. "There's a hornets' nest up there!"
Cloud looked upward again. Due above the second pitcher plant was an ominous paper football, hanging from a tree branch. Large hornets were buzzing about quite audibly.
"We need to get through here," Vincent said as he pointed the Death Penalty at the nest.
"Are you crazy?!" Aerith exclaimed. "They're all going to come after us and sting us to death!"
Not heeding her, Vincent fired the Death Penalty.
The hornets' nest suddenly fell right into the mouth of the flytrap. The mouth immediately shut, preventing any hornets from escaping. For a few moments, nothing seemed to happen. Then, the flytrap turned yellow. Finally, it turned brown, withered, and died.
"I think we can all get a peace of mind from that," Vincent said.
That was not the end of any problems, however, as a gap now occupied the spot that once belonged to the flytrap.
"I really wish I kept that grappling hook," Aerith muttered.
Cloud, meanwhile, noticed that, while the second pitcher plant was sealed, the third one was not. He briefly returned to the ground and caught a frog. Before anyone could object, he fed the poor frog to the remaining pitcher plant.
"All clear!" he announced as he hopped safely across the sealed pitcher plants and reached the other side. "Who's next?"
"I am!" Aerith announced as she climbed up and leaped across the pitcher plants.
Vincent quickly followed suit.
"I think that was one of the puzzles," Aerith suggested.
"I'm just wondering what lurks ahead," Vincent said.
"Look," Cloud commanded.
A few feet away was a pit so deep the none of the three could see the bottom. A pink vine was hanging over it, provided by a plant above.
"It looks like we need to swing across," Cloud observed. "I think it's the only way."
Vincent turned to Cloud. "She might need to hold onto you when you swing."
"Excuse me?" Aerith demanded. "Are you just saying that because I'm a girl?"
Vincent was silent.
"I'll take that as a 'yes,'" she sighed as she folded her arms. "Watch, I'll do it first!"
Before either man could say anything, Aerith took hold of the vine and swung across the gap, landing safely on the other side. She then tossed the vine back towards Cloud and Vincent.
"See?" she gloated. "Just because I'm a girly girl who hates bugs and believes in gender roles doesn't mean that I'm helpless."
"Whatever," muttered Vincent as he took the vine and swung across.
"I think you need a girlfriend," Aerith suggested. "It's the best way to learn about women."
"Nobody will date me," Vincent dismissed as he tossed the vine to Cloud. "I'm dead, remember?"
"So?" Aerith replied. "I'm dead, too, but I have a guy."
Cloud, meanwhile, swung across the gap.
"That was easy!" he said triumphantly.
UP NORTH...
Sephiroth entered Icicle Inn through the northern entrance. The town had not changed much since he last ventured through there. The two children were no longer occupying the snowman; that had been finish long ago. In fact, no children were outside. The town had become rather gloomy.
"You'll freeze to death!" shouted the lone man outdoors.
Sephiroth paid him no heed. He had other places to go. He did not desire his second victim here; he wanted one from each continent. He already had one in the north. Now, he needed to head south.
BACK AT THE FOREST...
Beyond the chasm stood a giant tree. A few feet away stood, to everyone's horror, another flytrap. There was no hornets nest above this one. There was a vine directly above it, but it was too high for anyone to reach.
"Every problem has a solution," Cloud whispered to himself."
He then looked behind to see a another vine near the tree, which he could climb.
"Hold on," he commanded.
He climbed the vine to a ledge. From there, he could see two more pitcher plants.
"There's two more pitcher plants up here!" he announced. "And bugs."
Aerith turned away. "Just let me know when you're done feeding them," she requested in disgust.
Cloud picked up two bugs and tossed each of them into a pitcher plant, causing them to seal.
"It's over!" he announced.
Aerith and Vincent climbed up the vine and joined him on the platform. They saw the two sealed pitcher plants, followed by a vine that was suspended directly over the flytrap.
"You never told me that was on the way," Aerith said in an annoyed tone of voice.
"Just follow my lead and you'll be fine," Cloud assured her.
With that, he grabbed the vine and shimmied slightly downward. He then began to pump his legs, causing the vine to swing. Once he was a safe distance from the flytrap, he let go, dropping to the ground.
"You'll be fine!" he called to the other two as the vine came to a stop.
Aerith grabbed the vine and turned towards Vincent.
"I can feel it when someone's staring at my butt," she said. "Do so and you'll end up even deader."
She then mounted the vine, shimmied downward, and began pumping her legs. She quickly leaped safely to the ground.
Vincent mounted the vine and ultimately made his way over without saying a word.
Up ahead were two pitcher plants. The first was open and the second one was sealed. Beyond the pitcher plants was yet another flytrap.
"No need to ask what has to be done here," Vincent said.
Cloud quickly picked up a nearby frog and fed it to the open plant.
The three of them, one by one, hopped across the pitcher plants and over the flytrap.
"Still no sign of the Quadra Magic," Cloud said.
"It's obviously deeper in the forest," Vincent said.
He then began to lead on, with Aerith in the middle and Cloud at the caboose.
Once she was in between Cloud and Vincent, she briefly pulled her jeans down two inches to show Cloud her green panties.
"Just for the occasion," she mouthed at him with a smile.
She then turned to see Vincent about to turn his head.
She quickly yanked her pants up before he saw.
