Pretty awkward, that would have been a good way to describe it. Things got better though, as the day went on. Tseng seemed to have forgotten about the little ‘incident’ that happened this morning. Which was good, because I’d rather it be forgotten as well. Shoved in a box, coated in concrete and buried deep under a reactor. Put it down to extreme alcohol consumption and nothing more. Although, one thing I would find hard to forget, would be punching Tseng ‘accidentally’ in the face.
The large brown plaster over his nose was a constant entertaining reminder. And how did it feel you ask? Well, I’d be lying if I didn’t say- pretty damn good.
***
I rolled over onto my side, and my face came into contact with something silky. With my eyes still closed, I took in a deep breath, smelling that exquisite scent while extending out my arm; to touch the smooth strands of hair my cheek had suddenly met with. Ah, you never disappoint me, do you?
I turned on to my stomach and pushed myself up on to my hands and knees. I eagerly crawled a little closer to the inviting obstruction on my bed. He was positioned on his back and my hand trailed through his smooth silken tresses as it cascaded freely over the pillow.
“I was actually thinking about you today, about the previous occasion we shared together. I was, as it happens, a little uncomfortable with the idea at first. But having had time to think it over, it wasn’t really all that unpleasant after all” I leaned over him and ran my tongue over his subtle lips, which he opened willingly for me to slip inside of. With one hand in his hair the other one was free to roam his beautiful body, which it did without hesitation. I climbed up on top of him and pushed myself against his warm chest, savouring the heat from his skin. Suddenly, his body tensed up, his mouth shot open and a loud painful whimper was released.
I pushed myself up in shock, slightly startled. “What? What happened?”
He groaned painfully, curling up into a shivering ball on the bed beneath me, hugging his arms tightly around his stomach.
“Are you alright? Here, let me see” I reached over to turn on the bedside lamp so I could assess the degree of damage for myself. I was suddenly stopped, my wrist was grabbed and pulled back with mild force. I looked down to him in confusion.
“What are you doing?
He shook his head and groaned again.
“How can I help you, if I can’t see what’s wrong with you? You can’t be embarrassed, surely. Not after all of the things you’ve done with me in the past”
He shook his head in disagreement and gently squeezed my wrist.
“Is there something wrong with your appearance? Is that why you don’t want me to see. You’re not…disfigured, are you?” I reached down and gently ran my hand over his face, tracing his features. “Funny, you don’t feel deformed. If I had to go on what I just felt, I’d say you were perfect. Now, how can I have my way with you if you’re writhing in agony on my bed which isn’t even my doing! Stop this nonsense and release my wrist!”
He shook his head again, struggling to suppress his soft cries and the waves of pain he was experiencing.
“For gods’ sake!” I snarled, wrenching my wrist away from his grasp. I climbed off from on top of him. Leaning over the edge of the bed, I once again reached out towards the lamp switch. This time he sat up, placing his arms around my waist from behind. Pulling me backwards, he rested his head against my back, restricting my access by holding me tightly in place. I looked back to him, slightly annoyed.
“What is wrong with you? Let me go. Now, before I get angry!”
He shook his head against my skin and tightened his hold around me. I growled irritably. I’d had to endure secrecy on our past encounters and I was now ready to see what he actually looked like. What did he have to gain from keeping his identity secret from me? I was curious. I wanted to see him, wanted to see how beautiful he was. I broke free of his embrace and stood up from the bed. He grabbed my wrist and shook his head again as my fingers brushed over the switch of the light.
“Why are you so desperate to hide from me? I have a right to know who you are. I’ve allowed you into my life, into my bed. I’ve done things with you that I would never even think about doing with anyone else… of your… gender.”
He gently tugged on my arm and moaned softly. Oh, for fucks sake. I removed my fingers from the light switch and stared at the darkened figure kneeling on my bed. His hand was still clasping hold of my wrist, silently pleading with me to cease my inquisitiveness. I pushed him down forcefully on to his back and climbed on top of him again. He whimpered quietly as a result. I placed my hand over his stomach, applying vigorous pressure to certain areas. He tensed up and hissed in discomfort. I looked down to him, harshening my tone.
“Well, if you’re not going to tell me and you’re not going to allow me to look, then I’m going to have to use another method, aren’t I?” I trailed my hand upwards and stopped at his chest. I applied equally as much pressure there, to different places. I got a much louder response; hisses of agony and distress were what I received from my straightforward examination technique.
“Bruised ribs?”
He nodded.
“Why the hell you didn’t you tell me that before? How am I supposed to be intimate with you if you’re in constant pain all the way through it? Why did you come to me tonight if you knew damn well that you couldn’t fulfill my needs?”
He reached up and removed one of my hands from his chest. Bringing it down towards his face, he nuzzled it apologetically. Fabulous, I have a willing man at my disposal but he can’t bloody well DO anything. What use is he to me now?
I sighed and climbed off of the bed. He bolted upright, holding his chest with one arm and reaching out with the other to restrain me once more. I slapped his hand away.
“I’m going to get something for your pain so I might actually get some pleasure out of your visit tonight.” I turned my back on him and walked into the en-suite bathroom. I flicked on the light and fumbled around inside of the cabinet for something to ease his obvious discomfort. Hmm, drugs… Sedatives… ah, here we go. This should do it. I closed the cabinet door and proceeded back towards the bedroom. I reached out, using my fingers to find the light switch on the wall. I pushed it down and bright light engulfed the room. I stared anxiously at my bed as I spoke, waiting for my eyes to adjust to the light “I’ve got something. It should numb the pain for a-” wait… the bed was vacant. I darted my eyes around the room. It was completely empty. Where the hell did he-? I walked over towards the bed and ran my fingers over the sheets… there wasn’t even a single crease. BUT HE WAS JUST HERE?
I lifted up the covers and stuck my head under the bed. Where the hell had he gone? Was I imagining it? I let the covers fall from my hand and sat on the bed, rubbing my forehead in confusion. Did I just wake up? Was I ever asleep in the first place? AM I FUCKING INSANE, OR WHAT? I stared down at the bottle in my hand. Was I sleepwalking? I placed it down on the bedside table next to my digital clock, staring at it blankly. Ok Rufus, from now on… you’re laying off the booze.

“What in the hell happened to you two?”
I’d just caught sight of Rude and Reno staggering through the corridor. Black eyes, bandaged heads, cuts and bruises. What the hell had they been up to this time?
“Hey boss, we had the most amazing battle yesterday. Kicked major ass, didn’t we, Rude?”
Rude silently crossed his arms over his chest and nodded in agreement
“Why, what happened. I thought Heidegger sent you all out on observational duties?”
“Yeah, well some punk-ass-shit-heads jumped us. There was only the four of us but, musta been about, what… twenty, twenty-five of them?” He turned to Rude while shrugging his shoulders.
“There were ten” Rude replied bluntly
“Yeah, nineteen of the bastards. But they were mean-ass-sons-of-bitches, right Rude?”
Rude sniggered and pushed his dark glasses further up the bridge of his nose, while nodding in accordance with the smaller excited Turk.
“It was so cool. First, they were like surrounding us. Then a couple more came and started shooting at us from behind. Me and Rude were like, bouncing around, dodging all the bullets and shit- Then they started on Elena ‘coz she was like the weakest outta the group. They proper K.O’d her ass. So, Tseng was like, taking all the hits for her while she was out cold on the floor; got the major crap beaten outta him for it. We’re talking- guns, metal pipes, baseball bats, knives, forks. You name it, those fuckers had it. But he was so cool. Man, that dude can fight. Me and Rude were like taking on four, five guys at a time… but Tseng was taking on twice as much as that AND still managed to defend Elena. After it was all over, he picked her up, threw her over his shoulder and brought her all the way back here. I mean, that dude’s got muscle; you’ve seen the size of Elena’s ass lately? Ckin’ hell, is it getting big! But Tseng carried her back, like, no sweat.”
I arched an eyebrow with interest “I’m intrigued, how many did you say there were again?”
Reno mused, stroking his lip “Hmmm, ’round fifteen, ‘bout that… right, Rude?”
“There were ten” Rude replied again.
“Yeah, ten”
I assessed the two Turks in front of me. They were beaten black-and-blue. They both looked as bad as each other, complete wrecks. “Well, however many there were, they certainly made you work hard for a change.”
“Yeah, but it was worth it” Reno grinned.
My tone changed from slightly concerned and slipped into a sort of…fiendish sarcasm. “From the sounds of it, you both were exceptionally brave. You must have been in terrible danger.”
Reno smiled. “Danger? Ha! I laugh in the face of danger. HA-HA-HA!”
“Usually, the first sign of danger he’s out of there like a shot” Rude taunted, signaling a thumb upwards towards a red faced Reno and getting an objective response in return.
“I AM NOT! No, really boss. I’m not like that. NO WAY!”
Rude glared dangerously from over his glasses. “And if you quote on more word from that stupid cartoon, Reno… I swear, I’ll beat you shitless myself.”
“Ooh, I quiver with fear!”
I had to muffle the laughter escaping my mouth as Rude lunged for an already battered Reno. Even for an injured man he could still move rather swiftly. I had to hand it to these two; their ridiculous antics always managed to make me laugh.
“I’ve never seen a king or beast with quite so little hair!” Reno shouted from over his shoulder as he was pursued by a roaring Rude.
“YOU’RE A DEAD MAN!”
“I can’t help it. It’s stuck in my head…my girlfriend forced me to watch it again last night” Reno panted, as he tried to evade Rude’s attack.
“Girlfriend? Since when does the infamous Reno commit himself to just one woman?” I chuckled as my eyes followed the panicking red head as he danced anxiously about the corridor, just merely dodging Rude’s fists as he repeatedly swiped at him.
“Ok, ok…. the chick I’m shagging at the moment made me watch it. Happy now? Jeez, you make me sound like a right slut!”
“You are.” Rude added, as he managed to powerfully punch Reno in the shoulder and cause him to fall forcefully against the wall. He then walked over towards Reno who was now slumped on the floor. Taking a handful of his shirt he yanked him up from the ground.
I was struggling to stand upright. I was laughing my head off at these two comical oafs. Reno grinned brazenly at Rude as he brought him up to face level.
“Now, cut it out!” Rude spat as he poked Reno in the chest with his free hand.
“Can’t cut it out…it’ll just grow right back” Reno grinned, but that grin soon disappeared when Rude drew back his arm “ARGH, Ok-ok… no more quotes, promise.”
Rude scowled then released Reno from his grasp, allowing him to fall back on to the floor in an unattractive heap. I was wiping the tears from my eyes on to my sleeve. These guys were hilarious.
Rude stepped away from the slouched mass that was Reno, to allow him space to get back to his feet. Once upright again, Reno dusted himself off and flicked his ponytail back over his shoulder; that defiant grin of his spreading back across his face once more as he started to march ridiculously on the spot.
“Asante sahana, squash banana~agh!” Reno screeched as Rude pelted after him up the corridor. I turned and sniggered to myself, now highly amused. You’ve got to love those two idiots, the way they acted - you’d never imagine them to be highly skilled professional killers. I slipped my hands into my pockets and made my way back along the corridor, looking up briefly when I caught a glimpse of Tseng. He acknowledged me respectfully with a nod as we passed.
“Excuse me, sir. You haven’t by chance seen either Rude or Reno on your travels today?”
I paused, looking back “Yes, actually. I’ve just seen the two stooges heading towards the stairs. If you hurry, you’ll catch them.”
He lowered his head courteously in reply “Thank you.”
I smiled, “Oh, and when you do see them. Tell them running isn’t advised in the corridors.” I quickly jerked my head towards the sound of a loud sudden crash, followed by a horrified shriek. I was then grabbed and pushed against the wall by Tseng, out of the way of Rude and Reno as they sprinted past being chased by a galloping Heidegger covered in hot steaming coffee, jam and vanilla custard.
“STAMPEDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!” Reno screamed, as each one disappeared through the set of swinging double doors. I was stunned, holding on to Tseng for support. I’d never felt the ground shake like that before. I’ve been through earthquakes in the past, but never one as traumatic as that. I bet it was at least an 8.8 on the Richter scale. I really hoped Heidegger didn’t catch them. I’d be two Turks down if he did.
***
I sat down behind my desk and loaded the after battle summaries the Turks had typed out the night before, bringing them up on screen. It helps Heidegger assess the situation, see if further action needs to be taken or if things have been missed. I couldn’t wait to read Reno’s report. He very rarely completes them. If he did lazily submit one, the spelling was usually dreadful and the grammar was equally as bad. Extremely unprofessional, considering we have what is known as a ‘spell check’. But, when he does enjoy a job, he likes nothing better than to boast about it. He documents every little interesting aspect and doesn’t half exaggerate in the process. It makes for highly amusing reading. If I wanted the actual facts, I’d just read Tseng’s report. Laid out all professionally with times and locations clearly stated in the margin- like it should be. Or there were Elena’s reports, which always displayed disgustingly cute floral borders around the edges, where she imports those from, I don’t know; and adding inappropriate observation details that weren’t actually needed and leaving out the important information that was. Well, she is still new to the role. And then there was Rude’s that were just…well, just about average. He might be the quietist one out of the group, but, I think he’s actually the only sane one as well. Add them all together, and Heidegger gets the best possible insight…or not, in the case of Reno’s.
I was leaning back in my chair, howling with laughter as I read on. This guy was in the wrong profession. I heard my console beep and I pressed my finger over it. “Yes, enter”
I was still continuing reading Reno’s report when Tseng walked up to my desk and stood at my side, holding out some documents for me to sign.
“Heidegger sent me up with these. He was too ‘busy’ to do it himself.”
“Yeah, yeah leave them on my desk.” I waved lazily, chuckling to myself, my eyes never leaving the screen as I spoke. I then found myself falling forwards as I exhaled another sudden outburst of amusement. Tseng tilted his head to assess me, a smile starting to form.
“Something’s certainly amused you, sir.” he asked with intrigue.
“Oh, it’s just Reno’s report. Have you read this part?” I tapped my finger over the sentence I’d just read. Tseng slowly leaned over me for a closer inspection, reading the area where my finger was pointing.
“Hmmm, he does like to stretch the truth a bit, doesn’t he?” Tseng sighed.
I smiled and breathed in deeply through my nose, to catch my breath from my constant fit of giggles. “It’s funny. I can just imagine him flying across the building site in Rude’s dark glasses and a long leather coat.” Then I paused, was that? ...I sniffed the air again and turned my head, noticing that Tseng was still leaning over me, still reading from the monitor over my shoulder. I moved in a little closer and took in that smell again. My eyes shot open and I backed away slightly, shaking my head in doubt. No, it couldn’t be…
“Tseng… what are you wearing?” I questioned warily, eyes fixated on his neck.
He raised his head slightly and looked at me in confusion. “Excuse me, sir?”
“Your aftershave, or whatever.” I gestured to my own neck as I spoke. “What is it?”
“Oh, my cologne?”
I could feel my cheeks starting to burn, my throat becoming dry. “Do you often wear it?”
He thought for a moment then nodded in response “I suppose I do, yes.”
No…. no-no-no. GOD NO! It was a mistake - a simple coincidence. I found myself staring up at him, allowing my eyes to take in his appearance. He blinked slowly in bewilderment at my strange behaviour, furrowing his brow as he spoke. “Is there an issue?”
“N-No, everything’s fine.”
He smiled and rose steadily to his full height. When he did, he groaned softly and placed his hand over his chest.
“What’s the matter with you?” I urged, surveying him, finding now that my own breathing had become a little unsteady.
“Just an injury from yesterday. It’s nothing serious.”
“Sounds serious to me, what did you do?”
“Just a few damaged rib-” He paused suddenly, then smiled down at me “It’s nothing.”
