“You ready, big guy?” Sazh asked as he aimed his newly crafted weapon at Snow.
“As ready as I’ll ever be!” He yelled back as he braced himself for the impact.
Sazh smiled as he pulled the trigger. Sending bolts of fire in his direction. “C’mon, man. Focus!” His encouraging words helped Snow do just that. He focused all of his energy on blocking the flaming force that was hitting him. With his final push, he was able to counter attack and send the bolts flying back at his friend. Causing the protective glass in front of him to shatter.
“Yeah! THAT’S IT!” Sazh lowered his weapon as he cheered Snow on.
Snow, filled with pride, jogged back to the training area. “That was awesome! I haven’t been able to do anything like that since…” His sentence trailed off.
“Since the day our lives changed forever…” Sazh’s voice was almost a whisper as he got lost in his memories. “I miss them, too.” He said as he placed his hand on Snow’s shoulder to comfort him.
“Do you think they’re okay?” Snow asked as he sat down and reached in his bag for a bottle of water.
“Oh yeah. I’m sure they’re fine. They’re stronger than all of us combined.” He joked. “I mean, they did manage to avoid killing us during our journey.” He joked as he sat beside him.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right. I just wish I could do more.” His voice grew quieter as he took a dip from his bottle.
“You’re doing all you can do. You’re here, aren’t ya?” He asked. “You’re trying to help Hope in any way you possibly can. Not to mention the silent support you’re giving Serah and Noel.”
Serah and Noel. He almost forgot about where their journey was leading them. It had been weeks since Hope had updated him on their status. Last he had heard was that they were getting closer to their final battle.
He worried every day but he knew that they were going to be able to defeat him. He had to stay positive otherwise he’d lose his mind. He would be buried in the same darkness Lightning had tried to describe to him months ago in his dream. The dream he won’t soon forget. The dream he where he found himself wondering if it was even their version of reality or if it was just his mind playing tricks on him. He didn’t really care. That dream was a dream he found himself thinking about when he was alone at night. He could still feel her in his arms, kissing him…letting him inside of her. He could still hear her moaning and gasping with every deep thrust he made.
“Snow?” His intimate memories were interrupted by Hope approaching.
“Oh hey.” He said nervously as he adjusted himself to hide his excitement. “What’s up?” He asked,
clearing his throat.
“There was a report sent in late last night. I was only just informed.” Hope handed him his tablet with the report displayed. “It looks like there may be some sort of trouble brewing in New Bodhum.”
“What? I have to go.” Snow handed him his tablet as he stood, ready to dart away.
“Snow, wait. You didn’t read the report.” Hope rolled his eyes as he stood before him. “It looks as
though there is a disturbance in the time line. Way far into the future. New Bodhum shouldn’t even exist yet there are signs of three…maybe four…life sources there.”
“Serah and Noel…” He said calmly. His heart slowing from the quickened panic he felt just moments before.
“That’s what we think. I can’t be sure. There’s no way to get there but, if it’s them, it just means they are that much closer to their final battle against Caius.” He reached into his pocket and retrieved a small crystal rose, changing the subject. “This…was left next to the report. Nobody on my team knows where it came from but,” He handed it to Snow, “Maybe you might know where it came from…”.
Hope nodded for Sazh to come with him and they both walked back toward the training center. Leaving Snow to stare at the rose. ‘Why would I know who left this?’ He asked himself. After a few minutes of wondering, he put it in his jacket pocket and decided to go for a walk around town. He had realized in recent days that, since he arrived there, he hadn’t actually taken the time to enjoy Academia. He only ever spoke to Hope and Sazh or he was always training or sleeping.
The town was busy, as usual. Kids ran around playing tag and laughing while adults discussed recent events and current sales. Occasionally, he would be met with a kid falling on his face which would always make him laugh.
Academia was beautiful. He just wished he could share the joy with the woman he missed so much.
Lightning.
“Watch it!” A child yelled as he ran into Snow’s leg.
Snow raised an eyebrow at the child and slowly stepped out of his way while crossing his arms and giving his best “dad glare” he could think of.
“Oh. S-Sorry, Mr. Snow. I-I didn’t mean…” The kid’s previously confident voice fell to a much smaller and fragile position.
“It’s okay, kid. Just don’t do it again. To anyone.” He said with a firm smile as he rustled the small child’s brightly colored hair.
He stood and watched as the boy ran off to meet his friends.
At that moment, Snow was jealous. He missed those days. The days where he could run around without a care in the world. Causing chaos with his buddies and cat calling the local girls.
Now? The older he got, the more he realized how short their depressingly human lives were.
The sun had set and Snow had finally returned to his apartment. He quickly changed into his black
sweatpants and a snug white tank top. It fit perfectly around his athletic body.
Approaching the couch, he reached down for the device that controlled almost everything in the house and turned on the TV. It was just on to silence his screaming thoughts.
As he leaned back, he closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths before he felt a thud on his head. He jumped up, ready to fight the intruder but, much to his surprise, Fang was standing before him. Her lance in hand, her weight shifted to one him while her free hand was on the other.
“Hey there, hero.” She said with a cocky grin.
“Fang? How…” He asked, shaking his head and putting his hands in the air, “Nevermind. I don’t need to know.” He laughed as he stood to hug his long lost friend. He somehow became used to the idea of his mind getting invaded by the women in his life.
“It’s good to see you, too.” She said as she returned the gesture and sat down in the white recliner that sat next to her while Snow returned to the couch.
“I must be dreaming again…” He confessed.
“Sort of. It took me a while to figure out how to reach you. Things got weird after we saved the world, yeah?” She asked as she peered out the giant window from her seat.
“You have no idea.” He said as he shifted his position.
“Eh, I think I have some sort of an idea.” She threw him a suspicious raised eyebrow expression.
He was confused but didn’t say anything. He didn’t know what to say to her. He didn’t know what she had seen from her crystal stasis. ‘Did she see things like Lightning did?’ He asked himself. Suddenly feeling nervous.
“Yes, Snow. I saw everything.” It was like she could read his mind. Maybe she could. He wasn’t sure.
“Oh…” His face began to turn red with embarrassment. “I, uh, sorry.” He ran his hand through his scruffy hair as he threw her a nervous half smile.
“Nah, don’t be sorry. It was fun to watch. I mean, I didn’t expect you to screw Lightning but…she
seemed to enjoy it.” Fang joked as she leaned back in the chair, resting her feet on the table in front of her.
“This is awkward.” He began to squirm in his seat. He wanted nothing more but to change the subject but he couldn’t seem to think of anything else.
“Oh, C’mon big guy.” She winked as she crossed one ankle over the other. “It’s not a big deal. Everyone knew you guys had a connection. Even before our final battle together. We just never talked about it…in front of you guys.”
“I didn’t expect this, Fang.” He admitted as he finally locked eyes with her.
“I know. Trust me. I get it.” He knew she did. Her feelings for Vanille were also obvious, to him anyway. “Listen, I came here to thank you.” Her sudden change of subject was refreshing to him.
“Don’t mention it. You’d do the same for me. Even if you won’t admit it.” He joked. His cheesy grin
made her smile.
“I also wanted to come to let you know that things aren’t going to get easier. Vanille saw the a glimpse of what she thinks may be your future. It’s going to get darker. A lot darker. Prepare yourself.” She warned as she stood before him. “Don’t let the darkness swallow you whole, yeah?”
Before he could say another word, she was gone. Leaving him with the sense of sadness that engulfed his heart.
He knew. He knew something dark was coming. He had been feeling it bubbling for some time. He stood up and walked to his bed. Falling face first into the plush pillows, his legs hanging off the side of the bed.
“Light…where are you?” He whisperer as he buried his face into his pillow and, without any surprise to him, he fell asleep. Clinging to the pillow for some small form of comfort.
