Chapter 74: The Upper Pagoda
Cloud, Aerith, Vincent, Cait Sith, and Yuffie reached the top of the stairs. Staniv was waiting in the expected spot on the north side of the Pagoda.
"What level are we on?" asked Aerith.
"Four," Yuffie replied. "The second from the top."
"Or so you think," Staniv gloated.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Yuffie demanded.
"The rule is the best fighter on each floor will be your opponent," Staniv explained. "Although it's a five-storied pagoda, the fourth floor is the highest."
"That doesn't even make any sense!" Yuffie dismissed.
"In other words, no one has ever defeated me, the master of weaponry!"
"I see," Yuffie observed.
"You still want to try?"
"Just come on!" Yuffie exclaimed eagerly.
"I like you!" Staniv declared. "Now watch!"
As the light faded, Staniv no longer looked human. In fact, nobody could describe exactly what he was. He seemed as if he was a cross between a knight and a robot. His left hand was empty. His right hand was carrying, and twirling, a giant, menacing ball and chain.
Yuffie wasted no time. She darted for Staniv, got down on the floor, and performed a roundhouse kick.
As Staniv was encased in metal, the kick did damage to the wrong person.
"Fuck it!" shouted Yuffie as she grabbed her foot in pain.
"Cloud," began Aerith, "now would be a good time."
Cloud nodded as he immediately ran to the opposite wall.
"Coward!" shouted Yuffie.
"Brace yourself," Vincent warned.
At that moment, everything went dark as the white-violet forcefield engulfed the entire floor.
Yuffie looked on in frightened awe as knight after knight began to attack Staniv.
"What the hell is this?!" she exclaimed.
One slash after another struck Staniv.
Yuffie screamed in terror as the final, largest knight laid his strike down on Staniv.
And then, the white-violet forcefield returned, and, five seconds later, the original knight returned, slashing at Staniv.
"What's going on now?" Yuffie shrieked.
"Quadra magic," Cloud replied. "It allows me to use this summon four times in a row."
"If this summon freaks you out," Aerith added, "you should see the forest it came from."
"What forest?" Yuffie asked.
"There were giant flytraps," Cloud replied.
"Lovely," Yuffie sighed.
By the fourth time Knights was finished, Yuffie had gotten used to the summon.
Staniv, on the other hand, collapsed on his face.
"You didn't kill him, did you?" Yuffie asked.
"I don't know," Cloud replied. "I kind of hope not."
The usual flash of light then occurred. When it subsided, Staniv was still laying on his stomach, but had otherwise returned to normal.
"W-what?" he groaned as he got up.
"Of course," Yuffie said.
Just then, Gorky appeared from the downward stairs.
"Splendid," he said. "Your level and skills have improved."
Shake soon followed.
"Oh no!" he greeted. "You night not be as much of a child as we thought you were."
Chekhov predictably followed him.
"Of course, if we lost to her."
"You have defeated four of our best," Staniv announced. "But now you will have to face him!"
The four opponents then disappeared up the final flight of stairs.
"Who's 'him?'" Vincent asked.
"Needless to say," Cait Sith replied, "we're about to find out."
The four of them ascended the stairs. When they reached the top floor, they saw Shake and Chekhov on the west side of the room, and Gorky and Staniv on the east. To the north stood a tall and powerful-looking martial artist.
Yuffie suddenly gasped in shock.
"D-dad?!" she exclaimed.
"I'm glad you made it this far, Yuffie," Godo announced.
"Why?" asked Yuffie. "Why are you..."
"I'll answer you by having you try your skills against me!" Godo interrupted as he made a threatening gesture. "Come as if you're trying to kill me! If you don't, then I'll have to kill you!"
Yuffie gulped.
"And just you!" he added. "None of your friends!"
"Hey!" she exclaimed.
"What are you doing?!" Godo demanded. "Omni-change!"
The flash of light appeared for the fifth time. Godo had changed into a green lizard-like creature with two legs and four arms. Wearing samurai clothing, he bore a sword in his upper right hand. He wore a three-faced masked that would rotate at random.
Heedless of who Yuffie was to him, he charged her with the sword.
She was able to flip back and dodge it, but Godo remained in pursuit.
"Not bad," Godo announced. He then produced a smoke bomb in his lower left hand. "But you can't dodge what you can't see!"
He threw the smoke bomb to the floor, causing himself and Yuffie to disappear into a cloud of smoke.
All Cloud, Aerith, Vincent, and Cait Sith could hear was the sound of fast objects, presumably Godo's sword, moving through the air, and the sound of metal clanging.
Moments later, a flash of blinding light appeared, yet again. When it subsided, both Yuffie and Godo, who had returned to normal, were laying on their backs. Both of them were gasping for air.
"You...old coot!" Yuffie struggled to utter. "Not bad!"
"You've...also improved!" Godo said.
Father and daughter began to laugh in unison.
"Who won?" Cait Sith asked.
"God only knows," Vincent replied.
"You've earned the Conformer!" Godo gasped as he sat up.
"Great," Yuffie replied as she sat up. "Listen, Dad, Cloud's looking for the gills."
"The gills?" asked Godo. "Nobody's been looking for them for years."
"There's a nasty creature lurking in the ocean," she explained. "They need the gills to kill it. I know it's a secret where they are, though."
Godo nodded. "Since those we're hiding them from are gone now, why not tell you."
"You mean it?" Yuffie asked.
"Absolutely," Godo replied. "It's hidden in the caverns near North Corel. But the going there..."
"Good enough!" Yuffie interrupted. She then looked at Aerith. "I don't mean to ask too much," she began, "but can your boyfriend give me a piggyback ride down the Pagoda?"
Cloud let out a soft groan.
LATER THAT AFTERNOON...
Cloud and Aerith entered their house. It was about five in the afternoon, but the day had seemed much longer.
"Yuffie's back, too," she said to herself as she stepped into the parlor.
"That's right," Cloud said. "You were right; the band's slowly getting back together."
She smiled. "Of the nine of us, how many are back?"
"Five," he replied.
"More than half already," Aerith said.
She then unzipped her jeans, allowed them to drop to the floor, and stepped out of them, revealing a pair of white panties that flattered what they covered.
"I'm in a tee shirt and undies kind of mood," she giggled.
She then turned her back to Cloud and stretched, mainly to give him a view.
"Who do you think will come back next?" she asked.
"I'm not sure," he replied.
Aerith then turned to face him.
"What's wrong?" she asked. "Did carrying Yuffie down shoot out your back?"
"I am kind of tired from hearing her whine," Cloud replied.
"I think you're hungry," she said. "Why don't I make us some dinner?"
"Sounds good," he said.
Aerith disappeared into the kitchen, kissing Cloud as she walked by.
Cloud briefly gazed around the parlor. There was a long sofa, a loveseat, a forty-inch 4K television, and a luxurious fireplace against the wall. It made him realize how much his life had changed after growing up in a four-room house. He was no longer living there. He was no longer running for his life from armed soldiers or a detonating bomb. He no longer sleeping on the basement floor of a slum shack, nor was he living as a nomad, sleeping in more inns than he could count. He now had a huge summer house, with a beautiful girlfriend who made him dinner every day and took off her pants as soon as she got in the door. Others would kill for a life like his. And yet, he felt there was something missing in his life; something all the gil in the world could not buy.
A few moments later, Cloud heard the sound of a door opening, followed by a scream. Fearing something had happened, he rushed into the kitchen. When he got there, he could see Aerith facing an open door.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"I don't believe it," she replied. "I opened the wrong door and..."
She was staring down a flight of stairs that disappeared into the darkness.
"We have a basement?" Cloud asked.
"It appears so," she replied. "I wonder what's down there?"
He became curious.
"There's only one way to find out," he said.
"No thanks," she dismissed as she shuddered. "Basements give me the creeps!"
Cloud reached from behind and clicked on the light, revealing the bottom of the steps and a tiled floor.
"It looks furnished," he pointed out.
Aerith sighed. "I guess I could take a peek," she agreed. "But you go first."
Cloud moved in front of Aerith, took her hand, and led her down the stairs. When they reached the bottom, their eyes were greeted by a pleasant surprise.
"We have a pool here?!" she exclaimed.
"We have a pool here!" he replied.
The pool was about twelve feet deep, and about twenty feet wide and forty feet long. The water was clean; it seemed to be advanced to the point that it would clean itself automatically.
Aerith was beyond excited. "Well, we can't just leave it there!" she said enthusiastically. "I'm up for a dip if you are!"
Cloud nodded. "Get your bikini and meet me back here."
She then gave a playfully annoyed look.
"Who needs a bikini?" Aerith asked sarcastically as she pulled her shirt over her head and tossed it aside.
Cloud immediately took the hint. It made sense; nobody could see them.
"You like skinny dipping?" he asked as he dropped his pants and boxers to the ground in one yank.
She reached behind and unhooked her bra. "I've never done it before!" she giggled as she slide her bra off, allowing her breasts to spring free. "Have you?"
"All the time," Cloud replied, pulling his shirt off. "When I was a kid."
"I never pictured you being so free-spirited as a kid," Aerith said as she slipped off her panties.
She then tied her hair in a ponytail and sat down on the pool's ledge, sticking her feet in the water.
"Is it cold?" he asked as he sat down next to her.
"Kind of," she replied. "But I'm a daring kind of girl."
With that, she gently lowered herself into the pool and swam to the other side, supporting herself on the pool's edge.
"Get in here!" she commanded across the pool.
Cloud quickly slid in and swam over to join her.
"Did you like watching my butt as I swam across?" Aerith asked with a smile.
"Yeah," he replied with a grin.
"I thought you would," she replied as she place her hand on the back of his neck and kissed him.
"How does it feel to skinny dip?" he asked.
"Free!" she replied with a smiled before kissing him again. "I can't believe I spent years missing this!"
"There's a first time for everything," Cloud said.
"And your mom let you do this as a kid?" she asked.
He blushed. "It was her idea. She taught me to swim in the nude."
"Both of you?!" she exclaimed amusedly.
Cloud nodded.
"That's cute!" she exclaimed.
He blushed.
"Don't be embarrassed!" she insisted. "I think skin-to-skin's always important. You mom was a genius."
"I suppose," Cloud agreed.
"I want to teach my daughter to dance," Aerith said. "And I want to do it in the nude."
He gave her a look.
"Well, where else can you train your body in complete freedom, without anyone judging what your butt or boobs look like?" She then began to laugh.
"What's so funny?" he asked.
"You stared at by boobs," she replied.
"Don't tell me I'm not allowed," Cloud playfully teased.
"Whenever I say 'boobs' you look at mine," she giggled.
"I do not!" he insisted.
"Boobs," Aerith said.
Cloud immediately glanced at her exposed breasts.
"Told you!" she laughed.
He shook his head.
"Boobs," she repeated.
He again glanced at her chest.
"There!" she giggled. "You did it again!"
She then pressed her lips against his.
The two of them skinny-dipped for two hours, splashing each other and playing pool games. Finally, they decided to get out. As nobody had left any towels in the pool area, they had to walk laps around the pool. Slowly but surely, they dried off.
Cloud realized that there was yet another luxury he had had. This pool was ten times the size of the one he had grown up with at home. He could skinny dip with this beautiful woman every day if he wanted. And then came that feeling again; as if he was longing for something. He slowed down, allowing Aerith to pull ahead of him.
"What is it?" she asked as she stopped. "There's goosebumps on my butt, aren't there?"
"Yes," he replied.
"Oops!" she giggled as she turned around. "It is my first time skinny dipping. I was happy to share it with my best friend."
"Your best friend?" he asked.
Aerith smiled as she placed her hands on his shoulders.
"I have three best friends," she said. "Tifa, my mother, and you." She then kissed him.
Cloud became silent again. He tried to smile, but...
"I know," she suddenly blurted. "I haven't forgotten what my mom said the last time we saw her. But she'll get over it, and so will I. I still love her."
"I figured," Cloud said as he placed his hands on her hips.
Aerith then gave him a seductive smile.
"We never christened the parlor, did we?" she asked.
"I don't think so," he replied.
They then kissed again.
