Chapter 77: The Ugly Confrontation
Tifa opened her front door, and stepped outside. She gazed at the home town she had been born in twenty years ago. She was quite amazed at how faithful it had been reconstructed after the fire, as if it had never been destroyed. It slightly eased the melancholy she was encased in when she considered the possibility that she could reconstruct her own life in a similar way.
As painful as it was, she thought about Cloud everyday. She wondered whether he had found Aerith alive, or whether it turned out to be a clone or wishful thinking on his part. In any case, she sorely hoped that he was happy. She loved him with all her heart; him being miserable was the last thing that she wanted.
Suddenly, she felt her cell phone buzz. Cautiously, she pulled it out of her skirt pocket. She saw that she had one new text message, and that it had Cloud's icon on it. Her heart skipped a beat; she had wondered if she would ever hear from him again.
"Don't get your hopes up, Tifa," she said to herself. "He's probably not going to take you back. When was the last time somebody got fired and then rehired by the same place?"
She slowly pressed the icon to read the message.
"I love you, and I miss you terribly. I'm coming home," it read.
She gasped as tears immediately welled up in her eyes.
"Cloud, are you serious?" she typed back. She sincerely wondered if he was; even she engaged in wishful thinking from time to time.
She sent the message and spent the next thirty seconds staring at her phone. Then it buzzed again.
"Tifa," the message read, "look up."
Tifa cautiously looked up.
Cloud was standing there, facing her, at the town entrance. He stood there for a moment before he began to run towards her.
She began to run towards him as well. She could not describe the joy she felt.
They stopped in the town square, mere inches from each other. There was something that needed to be confirmed.
"She wasn't alive?" Tifa asked.
Cloud shook his head.
"She's alive," he corrected. "But I'm choosing you."
Tifa placed her hands over her mouth in surprise.
"But you committed to her first!" she exclaimed.
"And I woke up second," he replied.
Cloud wrapped his arms around her waist, picked her up, twirled her around, and kissed her. When he broke the kiss, he could see her beautiful eyes tearing. He looked into them with sincerity.
"Can you ever forgive me?" he asked as he brushed away he tears.
Tifa smiled gently, gazing back.
"Two gil," she replied.
"Excuse me?" Cloud asked.
"Two gil," she repeated.
"Two gil what?" he asked again.
MEANWHILE, BACK IN REALITY...
"Your change!" clarified the girl at the ice cream stand on the boardwalk, bringing Cloud back to reality. "Two gil!"
He accepted the change and took a lick of his ice cream.
Aerith, now dressed in sandals, a black tank top, and a pair of jean shorts, did the same.
His fantasy had come to an end, but he knew it had been fake even before it did. Tifa hated being picked up, and would never allow anyone, even him, to do so.
"Are you okay?" Aerith asked with a concerned look.
"Just fine," he replied in a monotone. He regretted how naïve she was at what he was about to do.
"You've seemed really off today," she said. "You haven't been sleeping well, have you?"
Cloud nodded.
The two of them walked on silently and continued their ice cream.
Cloud had selected the beach to have "the talk" that would end their relationship. It was not an easy decision; it had been on his mind the whole time since they got home. He realized what he was ending. He thought about how they met while she was selling flowers, and how sparks seemed to fly between them almost immediately. He thought about her smile; that was something he would definitely miss.
He would miss the house that they called theirs. He would try to soften the blow by letting her know that she could keep the house. He would also tell her that they could tell their friends anything she wanted; that she had left, that they were taking a break from dating, or whatever else she wanted. He would also miss waking up next to her every morning; her beautiful face was always something to give the rest of the day a positive vibe.
He would definitely miss the sex. Unlike the abstinent Tifa, Aerith would always become a wild sex animal once Cloud had gotten her clothes off. Of course, as Tifa would most certainly marry him, his wait would not be exceedingly long.
All of these things that he was thinking of made Cloud want to cry, but he knew that it must be done. The Cloud that she had fallen in love with was not real. It was time to stop living the lie.
Aerith could feel the awkward vibe the entire time. She decided to address it again once their ice cream was finished.
"Seriously, Cloud, something's got to be wrong."
She could read him all to well; it was time to drop the bomb. He knew she might question his action; he would simply tell her the truth. He knew she might cry; she would simply recover once she realized whom he really was. He knew she might lash out; he would simply walk away. But, in any case, it was time.
"Can we go somewhere private?" Cloud requested. "Like on the beach? There's something important I want to talk to you about."
"Okay," Aerith agreed as she began to feel curious. She did not sense any trouble in their relationship. After all, they had just bought a house together.
Cloud led her to and down a set of stairs that led from the boardwalk to the beach. He then led her along the base of the boardwalk, until they were a great distance from the stairs.
"Okay," Cloud softly began as he stopped.
"What's up?" Aerith asked, with a sweet smile on her face.
He sighed; this would be harder than he had previously thought. After all, she had done nothing wrong.
"Listen," he began. "Now that we're in private, and nobody can see or hear us..."
"I get it," she interrupted with a sudden smirk. "I'd also kind of like to do it under the boardwalk."
Cloud began to shake his head when he spotted another woman, with purple hair and a nose ring, and around their age group, approaching from the opposite direction.
"We'll resume the discussion when she's gone," he said. Privacy was essential.
Aerith smiled an slowly shook her breasts. "No problem, babe."
Cloud gave her a sad smile as he heard the footsteps approach; he knew what she was thinking, and had not forgotten what he was about to do.
Suddenly, he felt a hand grip his butt. He defensively turned around. Sure enough, it was the passer-by.
"Be damned, are you blind?!" he demanded.
"How could I be?" replied the purple-haired groper. "With an ass like that?"
"Keep your filthy hands to yourself!" Aerith chimed in angrily.
The groper put her hands on her hips.
"And what gives you the right to tell me what I can and can't do?" she demanded.
"He's my boyfriend!" Aerith immediately snapped as she moved in front of Cloud and approached her rival. "I'm the only one who can touch him there!"
"I'll bear that in mind," the groper replied, "when I'm riding him wildly, wearing nothing but my boots and cowgirl hat!"
Aerith allowed her anger to get the best of her and smacked the groper across the face as hard as she could. What she had said was too far; Aerith had lost control.
The purple-haired groper briefly rubbed her cheek before beginning to glare.
Aerith immediately regretted her action; as this was a complete stranger. She had not smacked anybody since she could remember. She wanted to just walk away.
But the damage was done.
"Well, then," hissed the groper. "If getting physical is what you want, that's what you're going to get!"
"I'm sorry," Aerith tried to apologize. "I let my feelings get the best of me."
"Too late," snapped the groper. "You're getting it back. Ten times harder!"
Cloud immediately began to rush to Aerith's aid.
Seeing this, the groper tossed what appeared to be some kind of orb in Cloud's direction. It stopped inches above his head, and cast what seemed to be a green forcefield around his body, imprisoning him.
"Let him go!" Aerith demanded.
"You and I have business to take care of," the groper replied.
"I'd rather not," Aerith insisted. "But, whoever you are, you don't want to underestimate me."
"Heather Stubblefield," the groper grunted. "Nice to meet you."
Realizing that she had no choice, Aerith raised her fists. Her heart was racing. Unfortunately for Aerith, she was inexperienced.
The groper quickly kneed Aerith in the stomach, causing her to drop to the ground and wretch. She had never been in a physical fight, and had never been punched in the stomach. The struggle to breathe was unbearable.
"Get up!" the groper snapped.
Aerith slowly did so, still gasping for air. She raised one arm, and attempted to protect her stomach with her other.
The imprisoned Cloud watched helplessly.
The groper slammed her body into Aerith's, causing the latter to double. She then grabbed Aerith by the hair, causing her to cry out in pain. Grinning, the groper hurled Aerith to the ground once again.
"Is that the best you can do?" Aerith taunted, trying to sound brave. But it was clear that Aerith was now defenseless.
Seeing her chance, the groper maneuvered behind Aerith, roughly encased her neck with her arms, and began to squeeze.
The gagging Aerith began to feel the life being squeezed out of her. She was completely unable to breathe. She attempted to free herself from the constricting arms, but it was no use. Driving her weakening hands into the sand below, Aerith resigned herself to her fate.
And then, just as life began to leave Aerith's eyes, the groper released her grip.
"No," the groper sighed. "I can't do it."
Aerith fell to the ground and immediately began to inhale heavily. It felt good to breathe again.
"I'm done fighting with you!" she said. "This is pointless, and not worth the money."
"Money?" Aerith managed to choke out in between her gasps. "You did this to rob me?"
"Not money from you, Aerith," the groper corrected. "From someone who wants me to act out of character. But I just realized I can't act out of character. I wouldn't kill anyone. Not even if Elmyra Gainsborough paid me to do it!"
With that, the purple-haired groper stormed off and disappeared from view.
Aerith gained the strength to rise to her knees, but lacked any will to pursue her attacker.
After several minutes had elapsed, the green forcefield dissipated, freeing Cloud. He immediately rushed over to Aerith, and helped her to her feet.
"Murdered!" she sobbed as tears streamed down her face. "She tried to have me murdered!"
Gripping Cloud tightly, she buried her head in his chest and continued to cry.
Cloud held her close. She needed him now; the breakup could wait.
MEANWHILE...
Sephiroth found the dinner at Aly's house more frustrating than the one at Sophie's. Not only did Aly have Eddie, but she had a younger daughter named Bella, who would often spit out food and throw it. Eddie and Bella did not quite look alike, suggesting that they had different fathers. Of course, he had a goal from meeting Aly, and if that was indeed the case, then perhaps it would be easier to reach.
An hour later, he found himself in the master bedroom shower. Bella had thrown a meatball, leaving spaghetti sauce on both his cloak and his hair. After yelling at Bella, Aly told Sephiroth that she needed to wash his clothes right away to avoid a stain, and that a shower would take care of the mess in his hair.
As the time passed, he noticed his fingers beginning to prune. The hot water was not running out, but he wondered if she had remembered that he was up there. He sat down on the shower seat, wondering what he was getting himself into.
He then heard the bathroom door open. Aly had entered without knocking. It was indeed her house, but...
"I'm so sorry Bella did that," she apologized. "Your clothes are in the dryer now. It won't be long."
"Thanks," Sephiroth said.
"Both of the kids are in bed now," Aly continued. "They're not bad, though."
"Of course not," he agreed. "Kids will be kids."
He could see her shadow through the curtain, and he could tell that she was facing him; she would not be leaving any time soon.
"Eddie's really happy you got him out of the tree," she said. "He even drew a picture for you."
"That's nice," he said.
"Poke your head out," Aly commanded. "You gotta see it!"
Sephiroth poked his head out and looked at the picture. His eyes then traced the arm holding the picture to the body it belonged to, and he realized that Aly had stripped to her underwear. He found her body incredible; it certainly did not reveal that she had given birth twice. What pleased him more was that she was about to sleep with him.
"Tonight, I'm yours," Aly announced as she put the picture aside and flaunted her beautiful body.
"I would not take advantage of you," Sephiroth replied, trying to avoid sounding too eager.
"You save my son," she insisted. "You deserve it."
"You are beautiful," he complimented. Indeed, she was. He almost felt sorry that he was going to do what he was about to do.
Aly smiled. "You haven't seen everything yet," she said as she unhooked her bra, slid it off, and tossed it aside. She then stepped forward, passionately pressing her lips against Sephiroth's.
"No wonder your kids are beautiful," he continued.
Aly smiled again. "You know exactly what to say to a mom!"
She yanked off her panties and joined him in the shower.
"You won this mygf!" she whispered passionately as she kissed him again.
"Mygf?" Sephiroth asked as he wrapped his arms around her bare waist.
"Mother you're going to-"
He pressed his lips against hers before she could say the final word.
LATER...
Aerith watched as the fire crackled. She was still shaken up from what had occurred several hours earlier, and the shock left her in somewhat of a daze. The only comfort she had was the fact that Cloud was with her. She had not said anything since they had been sitting there, but the safety she felt with his presence meant that she did not have to.
Sitting on a quilt, they each had a champagne glass near them. Aerith's back was against Cloud's chest, and her hands were on his, which were gently wrapped around her midriff. Cloud, meanwhile, was leaning against two bean bags he had placed on the parlor floor. Aside from the earrings and necklace Aerith was wearing, neither of them had a strip of clothing on.
It was her idea for them to be naked; she wanted to feel his skin against hers. She had warned him ahead of time that she was in no mood for sex; she simply wanted to be as close to him as possible. She wanted to feel the most of him against the most of her. She felt safe with him; he was all she had left.
Cloud was in no mood, either. He had not abandoned his plans to end their relationship, but he could not bring himself to do so now. He still loved her; the only problem was that she did not love him, or at least no the real him. Still, he could not bear to abandon her when she was this upset. He saw no harm in spending one more night with her, especially in such an intimate state.
Maybe I could get her to break up with me, he thought. Just telling her the truth would do the trick.
Tomorrow, he would do just that. And then, he would go to someone who loved him for who he really was.
Hang in there, Tifa, he thought to himself. I'll be coming soon.
"Cloud?" Aerith suddenly asked as she sat up and looked at the ceiling. A tear had escaped her right eye. "Do I really not belong here? I kind of knew some people would say things, but I didn't think anyone would want to kill me." She sniffled. "Especially her."
This would not decide the fate of their relationship, but Cloud knew it was wrong to simply let her hurt.
"You belong here," he assured her as he stroked her bare back. "I know it."
In response, Aerith turned one hundred and eighty degrees to face him. She clasped his hands.
"How can you be so sure?" she asked. "I know we've talked about this before, but I just don't know."
She closed her eyes, and each eye shed one tear each.
"Aerith," Cloud began, "the planet's conscious."
She nodded and opened her eyes.
"And if the planet didn't think you were supposed to be here, you wouldn't be. Either the phase materia wouldn't have worked, or you would have died from something else right afterward. Look at Jessie. She cheated death, too, and nothing happened to her. Don't forget Barret's friend, Dyne. As far as I know, he's alive and well."
Aerith gently placed her hand on his cheek.
"You're right, Cloud," she said. "I never thought of that until now."
She got up on her knees in the kneeling position, and signaled for Cloud to do the same. Once he did so, she placed her hands on his shoulders.
"I really love you, Cloud," she said. She then kissed him, wrapped her arms around him, and hugged him tightly.
No, you don't, he thought. You love Zack Fair.
"I'm so lucky to have met someone so wonderful!" she whispered.
I'm not wonderful, he thought. At least not for you. I was never in SOLDIER. I lied to you then, and I'm lying to you now. And once I tell you the truth tomorrow, you won't think I'm wonderful anymore, and you won't love me anymore, either.
"Hey!" she exclaimed. "Are you staring into the mirror?!"
He was not, but he looked at the mirror to see it giving a generous reflection of Aerith's bare butt. He allowed himself to stare after all; it would be the last night he laid eyes on it.
