Chapter 79: Emerald Weapon
The Highwind hovered above the small islet as Yuffie dropped a rope ladder from the outer deck. Cloud was the first to climb down, followed by Aerith. This was not an island getaway; the Highwind's sonar equipment detected that Emerald Weapon roamed the nearby waters. This day was the moment of truth; it was to verify how powerful the Knights of the Round summon actually was, when combined with the quadra magic. Cloud and Aerith were well aware of the risks; if they were successful, then Emerald Weapon would be destroyed, and their next target would be Sephiroth. But if they failed, they would instead be sending themselves to a watery grave.
"You guys'r gonna call when yo' ready?" Barret called from the deck as Yuffie lifted the ladder and the Highwind pulled away.
"You got it," Cloud replied.
"If yo' ass survives," he muttered.
"How come we're on this deserted islet, anyway?" Aerith asked as the Highwind disappeared over the horizon.
"So nobody will steal our stuff," he replied. "Plus, Emerald Weapon seems to favor the waters in this area. We won't have to spend endless hours searching the ocean."
"Good point," she said. "Ready?" she asked.
"Ready," Cloud replied as he pulled off his shirt.
Aerith took off her shirt and jeans, revealing her red bikini. She then turned to Cloud, who still had his pants on.
"Where's your swim suit?" she asked.
"Forgot," he replied, sheepishly. Of course, there was another reason, which she caught on to rather quickly.
"You thought we were going to do this naked, didn't you?" Aerith deduced aloud.
"Well..." he began.
"Looks like my dirty mind's rubbing onto you," she said. "But a submarine could go by and see us."
"True," Cloud agreed. He also remembered that the only reason that it was just the two of them was that there was only two sets of gills.
The two of them donned flippers to aid their swimming, and put their gills on. The "gills," as it turned out, were actually underwater materia. Aerith had caught that after their reunion with Barret and Jessie. They then stepped into the water, whereupon Aerith screamed.
"You okay?" asked Cloud.
"It's cold!" she replied. "Not like at home!"
He pulled her in for warmth.
"I'll make it," she assured him.
They then made their way out until they were shoulder-deep in the water, and dove in.
It was a beautiful world under the water. A forest of kelp greeted them as they swam deeper into the abyss. Gorgeous fish of all colors were swimming about, and even sea otters played among the leaves. Aerith grabbed Cloud's hand as she became awe-struck; it truly was an underwater wonderland.
Gradually, however, as they dove deeper, the animal life dissipated, and their surroundings became eerily quiet. The barren ocean floor came into view, and Aerith gripped Cloud's hand harder; now, it was because she was nervous.
A few moments later, the two of them landed on the seabed. Cloud held Aerith close, gently stroking her back as he scanned the area. They were both immersed in water, and could not hear a sound, yet he could feel her heart pounding in her chest.
In the shadow of the kelp, Cloud suddenly noticed some movement. Looking closer, he perceived a giant green object floating about. There was no doubt that it was Emerald Weapon. He pointed in its direction, signaling its presence to Aerith.
Aerith gazed at the menacing creature with both fear and awe. Her biological mother had told her many stories of Weapons when she was a child, but she had never expected to see one, let alone two. It almost looked as if it was wearing a dress, which she found amusing.
Emerald Weapon had its back turned towards the intruding couple. Cloud had it all planned out; he would swim within range and cast Knights of the Round four times in succession. Emerald Weapon would be obliterated. It was almost too easy.
Cloud signaled to Aerith that he was going to swim towards Emerald Weapon; at the moment, he was too far away for Knights to be effective. After she gave her nod of approval, he began to swim towards the creature, with his companion closely behind him. As Emerald Weapon was moving away from him, he had to pursue as fast as he could. The monster was six hundred feet away. Then it was five hundred feet away. Then it was two hundred feet away. Cloud landed on his feet and prepared to cast.
And then, Emerald Weapon turned one hundred and eighty degrees, revealing its front. There were four openings; two on each wing, as well as a large red core. As Cloud watched, the core began to open wider, as well as light up.
Oh shit, he thought.
With less than a second to spare, Cloud and Aerith fled in opposite directions as Emerald Weapon fired a beam from its core, causing a cloud of dust where it struck.
Aerith quickly swam, beginning to circle Emerald Weapon, hoping to cause it to turn so Cloud could start casting. Her heart was racing as she did do, realizing that it might turn and attack her. In an odd moment of rationality in crisis, she realized that, if it killed her, those who thought that her being alive interfered with the flow of time would be satisfied. But, in any event, Emerald Weapon did not turn. She completed a circumvention and stopped where Cloud was. She placed one hand on his back and the other on his shoulder.
Wasting no time, Cloud began to cast Knights of the Round. Emerald Weapon was sitting still; it was the perfect time.
Before the Knights could be summoned, Emerald Weapon raised itself up off of the ocean floor.
Realizing the danger, Aerith darted backwards, yanking Cloud away in the process.
Emerald Weapon landed on the ocean floor, causing another cloud of dust, as well as shock so powerful it knocked both Cloud and Aerith off of their feet. Both of them were spinning helplessly in the water.
Meanwhile, Emerald Weapon opened its core again. Instead of firing a straight beam, it fired many fiery bubbles. It was not possible to tell whether Emerald Weapon had eyes, or, if it did, how well it could see, but, miraculously, none hit Cloud nor Aerith.
Eventually, Aerith found her footing. Looking up, she realized, to her horror, that she was standing face to face with Emerald Weapon. There was no time to escape; in a few moments, it would either stomp the life out of her, or fry her with a laser.
So this is it, she thought. It looks like those people obsessed with the timeline will get what they want after all.
And then, Emerald Weapon opened its core.
Aerith closed her eyes. In a moment, it would all be over.
The core began to light up, preparing to exterminate its target.
Too late.
The first knight slashed into Emerald Weapon. Cloud had finished the summon, which he had begun from behind the creature's back. Soon, each knight was having a chance at the unbeatable creature.
Suddenly, Aerith's sheer relief became concern once again; she recalled what happened to a Weapon when it died. She signaled for Cloud to come to her, and together they began to swim away from the doomed Emerald Weapon as fast as they could. They swam further and further by the second, not daring to look back.
As they were swimming, they noticed a flash of orange-red glare that could have meant only one thing: Emerald Weapon had been destroyed. Three seconds later, Cloud felt himself and Aerith being shoved forward by the force of the explosion. He then began to feel the both of them being sucked toward the epicenter, but he continued to try and pull away with all of his might. He then had an idea. He wrapped an arm around Aerith's midriff. He then pressed his feet against the ground as hard as he could. A moment later, he felt them fly through the water; they had escaped the pull. They continued to swim several yards before turning around.
There was a gaping pit where Emerald weapon had been.
Both Cloud and Aerith sighed in relief.
Aerith then began to dance toward the direction of the pit., much to Cloud's amusement.
ON THE SURFACE...
Cloud was the first to emerge above the ocean water, followed by Aerith. The two of them ripped their gills off simultaneously and threw their arms around each other.
"We did it!" Aerith exclaimed as she pulled her head back to face Cloud's. "Kiss me!"
Cloud obliged, firmly pressing his lips, and tongue, against hers..
When they broke the kiss, Aerith looked him in the eyes.
"I thought I was going to die back there," she said.
"I'm really sorry I scared you," he said. "But we had to get rid of him."
"I know, baby," she sighed before kissing him again. "It just feels really good to be alive."
"Is that why you started twerking down there?" he asked.
"Maybe," she giggled.
The two kissed deeply once more before turning their eyes to the small dry land.
"What a beautiful islet!" Aerith observed.
The two slowly made their way out of the water. Both of them found it a relief to set foot on dry land again.
"Sephiroth doesn't stand a chance now!" she said happily.
Cloud nodded, with the water still dripping from his spikes. "All we need to do now is make our way into the Northern Crater. Once we encounter Sephiroth, he's a dead man."
"Of the original nine," she added, "we have six. Two thirds isn't bad."
"Don't forget Jessie," Cloud added.
"That's right," she said. "It would be nice to have everyone, though. I guess we don't always get what we want." She then scanned her surroundings. "When is Barret going to pick us up?"
"When I call him," Cloud replied.
Aerith then scanned her surroundings again before turning to Cloud and placing a hand on his butt through his pants.
"This would be a great place to do it," she commented with a smirk.
"Now you have the dirty mind again," Cloud pointed out.
"Nobody's around," she pointed out. Smiling, she undid her bikini top and tossed it aside.
"Bad Aerith!" he playfully reprimanded.
She then turned around. "Come and catch me!" she playfully teased as she began to run topless onto the islet. As she continued to run, she slipped off her bikini bottoms. And then, a few feet further in, she tripped and fell face-forward into the sand. She realized that she had forgotten to kick off her flippers, and she did just that.
"You okay?" Cloud asked as he took off his pants.
"I will be soon enough!" she replied seductively. "Get down here!"
There was wet sand all over her front, but she did not care the least. She smiled as she felt him grab her hips.
AN HOUR LATER...
Cloud and Aerith remained on their stomachs, with their backsides clean and their front sides still covered in wet sand. It was the "bed talk," as best as it could be described.
Aerith took Cloud's hand and squeezed it.
"You rock," she said. "You led me on one incredible adventure. Nobody ever did anything like that. Not even Zack."
Cloud smiled silently. He realized that it was another loose end he had not tied up.
"Sorry," she suddenly apologized. "I really shouldn't be talking about past relationships. Especially after sex."
"No worries," he assured her. "It's okay. He was here first, after all."
"It's not about who was there first; it's about who you love more," Aerith said. "If Zack came back, I wouldn't go back to him. I love you more anyway."
Cloud then gave her a sad, solemn look. What she had just said had jogged several thoughts in his head at once. But mainly...
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"He's not coming back anymore," he said softly.
She gave him a confused look.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
This is it, Cloud thought. If she forgives me for keeping this from her, she's a keeper for sure.
"I got lost in everything and forgot to tell you, and for that, I'm truly sorry, but he's not coming back anymore."
"Cloud," she began, "is there something you know that I don't?"
He nodded.
"Remember how I told you that I was in a test tube for five years, and that I had a companion with me who later got killed?"
Aerith gave one nod.
"I know Zack won't be returning," he continued, "because that was him."
"That was him?" she asked.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier," he apologized.
"It's okay," she assured him as she began to cry.
"I'm really, really sorry."
"It's not that," Aerith insisted through her sobs. "I spent five years in a rage with him, thinking he was fucking some other girl. I didn't know he was sealed up in a test tube!"
"It wasn't your fault," Cloud assured her. "It was covered up."
"I kind of knew in my heart he was gone," she continued sadly, "when his parents told me he was still missing. I didn't know. I just didn't know."
Cloud put his arm around her and pulled her in. He was silent, as he realized something important.
This girl genuinely loves me, he thought. She loves me to the point that she overlooks all of the mistakes I make.
He then realized what he was going to do next. Just days ago he had been thinking about breaking up with her. Now he was going to go in the opposite direction.
Tifa, I know you'll understand.
LATER...
Cloud and Aerith were walking on the beach as the sunset illuminated the red sky. Aerith was dressed in a white skirt and tank top, Cloud was in a button-down and khakis. Once again, he had initiated the walk on the beach. This time, he did not stop for ice cream; he led her straight to the sand.
Aerith was attempting to figure out what was going on. After showering together, she had laid down to take a nap, and, when she had awoken, two hours later, he was coming in the door, as if he had been somewhere. An hour after that, he had asked to to join him on the beach, and to try to look "as nice as possible."
So now they were walking on the beach, but, this time, they were nowhere near the boardwalk. Ultimately, when they reached an open spot on the beach, he stopped her, and turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his.
"Everything okay?" she asked as she smiled at him. "Is it something serious?"
"Yes," Cloud replied. "It's very serious."
Aerith was baffled. This had happened twice before, but this time, the third time, he did not seem off. Instead, he seemed very determined.
"What is it?" she asked.
"I just love how you forgive me for everything," Cloud answered. "From me being rude towards your beliefs to me keeping things from you."
"Don't mention it," she replied. "It's not how I define you."
"I also love your smile. And I love waking up next to you every morning."
Her heart began to beat faster. Is he gearing up for it? she thought to herself.
"And I want to keep waking up next to you," he continued, "until my last morning."
Aerith stood still, awaiting what he would say next. Her eyes were already wet.
Cloud took a deep breath.
Forgive me, Tifa, he thought.
She gazed at him with her beautiful, emerald eyes.
"Aerith Gainsborough," he began as he lowered himself on one knee. He pulled out a box and opened it, revealing a beautiful diamond ring.
Aerith's mouth shot open, and her heart was racing.
Is this really happening? she thought.
"Will you marry me?" he finished.
He did it! He asked me!
"Yes!" Aerith exclaimed as tears escaped her eyes.
Cloud raised himself to his feet, and slipped the ring on her finger. He then lifted her off her feet as she threw her arms around him.
"Cloud, I will marry you!" she exclaimed joyfully.
He gently set her down and kissed her. She truly loved him, she had forgiven everything, and he had committed to her first; it was the right thing to do.
Aerith continued to stare at the rock that was now on her finger.
"I can't wait to set a date," she said happily.
Cloud smiled. He knew exactly what she wanted.
"So what do you think of having your twenty-third birthday picture in a wedding gown?" he asked her.
Aerith giggled. "You read my mind. I'd love it!"
Cloud gently stroked her hair.
"This seventh of February it is," he said.
"And I already know what I want for my twenty-fourth birthday pic," she added.
"What's that?" he asked.
"A picture of us with our son or daughter," Aerith replied. "And if not that, then me expecting."
They kissed again.
On the way back, Aerith felt her skirt vibrating. She pulled out her cell phone to see that Elmyra was calling again. She let it buzz twice. She then pushed the "reject" button.
That night, Aerith slept with her arms clutching Cloud tightly. She felt no greater thrill than know that was how every night for the rest of her life would be spent.
At least, that was what it seemed...
