Surely, She Ain’t Serious
Chapter 8
The following morning, Cid awoke, to find Tifa nestled into his side. He smiled to himself, still basking in what had transpired between the two of them the night before. The pilot remained still for a while, not wishing to wake her, but it wasn’t long before she stirred.
"Hey," she said lazily, rolling onto her side to face him.
"Hey yerself." Cid offered her a smile and reached up, stroking her cheek. "Doin’ okay?"
"I’m wonderful." Tifa’s eyes shone in the morning light. "Last night was perfect."
The blond cocked an eyebrow at this, pleased that she was apparently all right with what had transpired. "Perfect, huh?"
"Yeah," she sighed, as she moved to sit up and stretch. "So, we’re going to drop Yuffie off today?"
"That’s the plan." He rolled onto his back and placed his hands behind his head. "After that, we’ll go over to Cosmo, but we won’t get there until tomorrow morning."
"Okay." Tifa slid from the bed and turned to look back at him. "I’m going to go have a shower."
"Sounds good." Cid didn’t move. "Tifa?"
"Hm?" She raised her eyebrows.
Cid instantly looked a little uncomfortable, as he really hated talking about ‘feeling’ related things. "You, uh, you thinkin’ about comin’ back and seein’ me tonight?"
She began to fidget with her hands in front of her and dropped her gaze to the floor. "Would that be okay with you if I did?"
He sat up and got off of the bed. Cid closed the small distance between them and put his arms around her. "Hell yeah, I’d like that."
Tifa giggled a bit and rested her head against his chest for a moment. "Then I think I will."
"Good deal." He backed up from her so she could get on her way. "I’ll see you in a while."
"Okay." Tifa spun and left, closing the door behind her.
Once alone, Cid smiled to himself and shook his head. He couldn’t believe what had happened, and potentially happen again come that evening. The pilot picked out some clothes and headed toward the showers that had been designated for the men on the ship. All hopes of having it to himself faded, however, once he entered and heard the water running. The blond figured it was probably one of his crewmen, but after shedding his boxers and stepping around the corner, he saw that it was not.
It was Vincent, and now knowing what he did, Cid wasn’t all that keen on the idea of showering with the gunman.
Vincent took passing notice of Cid standing there, but kept to the task of rinsing his hair. He could literally feel Cid’s discomfort with the situation, and opted to try and allay the other man’s concerns. "This isn’t the first time we’ve been here together, Highwind. I’ve never done anything before, worry not."
Cid suddenly felt like a bit of a jerk, and knew that if the man before him was Tifa’s best friend, then he needed to suck it up a little and try. "I’m…fine. Just didn’t what to, uh, is there any hot water left?"
Vincent reached forward and turned off the water, before flinging his wet hair over his shoulder and turning to the pilot. "Plenty."
Cid remained rooted to his spot, suddenly wishing that he had at least a towel to hold in front on himself, but such was not the case and he was there in his full glory. "Okay."
Vincent sighed and went over to pull his own towel from the wall. He got it around himself and then looked at the blond. "I’m sorry, I’ve clearly made you uncomfortable by being in here."
"No," Cid replied, lying and doing a piss poor job at it.
Vincent turned away from him, knowing that Cid certainly didn’t want his eyes upon him. "Nothing has changed between us. I was as I am before you knew, and things were not so awkward. You treated me poorly, but at the very least, you weren’t phobic about me. I regret you having learned the truth and having seen me with your crewman the other night."
Now Cid really felt like an ass. "No, everything’s fine, guy. I…I don’t care, it doesn’t bother me."
"Outside of the shower," Vincent corrected.
There was color in Cid’s cheeks now, and he wondered how bad this all was going to make him look in Tifa’s eyes when Vincent infallibly told her about this little encounter. "Vince…I…"
Suddenly, the gunman turned back around, wearing an obvious smile. "I would have normally expected you to have just turned and run out upon seeing me now that you know, but you did not. So, you honestly care for Tifa that much as to try and get past your own insecurities and make a show of not disapproving of me."
The fact that Vincent had so readily called it didn’t exactly thrill Cid, but at least it was on the table. "Yeah, I guess I do."
"Well, I appreciate that, Cid." Vincent started to walk to where his clothes were piled on a bench. "And Tifa will, as well."
"You’re…you’re gonna tell her?" Cid suddenly felt a little dizzy.
"I’m going to tell her that you came in when I was taking a shower, and instead of being a bastard to me or just leaving, that you made an effort to be civil. She will be impressed." Vincent let his towel fall to the floor, revealing his gracile form. "More points for you in her book."
Cid suddenly forgot about being naked and crossed his arms over his chest. "Sunshine, can I ask you a question?"
Vincent looked over his shoulder as he pulled on his pants and boxers, cocking an eyebrow quizzically.
"Why’re you tryin’ to help me with her?" Cid asked, honestly curious.
"Because, she needs this." Vincent straightened back up and got to slipping on his shirt. "And social dysfunctions aside, you are a good man, Highwind."
Vince just fuckin’ complimented me? Cid thought to himself. "You really think?"
"Indeed I do." Vincent buttoned up his shirt and offered the pilot a faint smile. "And I would not say that unless I truly meant it."
Cid was touched and more than a little surprised. "Well, thanks for that."
"Sure." Vincent picked up his cloak and headed out. He stopped just long enough to look back at Cid and examine him for a moment, before offering him a very uncharacteristic wink. "Get to your shower now, unless you just plan on standing there exposed all day, as nice as it may be."
The fact he was unclothed suddenly rushed in and Cid felt his blush return. His old compulsion to smack Vincent returned, but the gunslinger was already gone. Cid went ahead and took his shower. Things were getting…odd.
Once dressed, Cid made his way to the bridge and took over the helm from one of his crewmen. They would hit Wutai shortly, as the ship had kept traveling, although be it slowly, all night. As usual, the others were present. Yuffie and Tifa were together talking, making plans to meet up with one another before too long. Red was over close to Vincent’s corner, speaking with the gunman in hushed tones.
Things seemed calm, and he smiled when Tifa stopped talking to the ninja for a moment upon his arrival. She flashed a shy grin in his direction, and raised a hand slightly in some gesture.
Cid considered her for a few moments as she got back to entertaining Yuffie. As he got a cigarette between his lips and lit up, he realized that he was starting to hope that once the others were dropped off, that maybe, just maybe, she wouldn’t want to go back to Midgar after all.
Shera could move out, and Tifa could move in, if she were so inclined.
He immediately began to try and push this notion from his mind, however, not wanting to get his hopes up. After all, she herself had said plenty of times that she was going back to Midgar to reopen the bar and be with Cloud. That was important to her and she would not be dissuaded. Of at least that much, Cid was sure.
But a guy can fuckin’ dream, right? Cid sighed inwardly.
