Chapter 8: A Choice to Be
Made…
“Hello Zack,” Rufus greeted from where he was still
sitting in his wheelchair. Reno and Rude were standing by his side as Zack
walked over to him only to Rufus to start when he saw Tifa coming up behind
Tifa with a hard look in her red eyes. “Miss Lockhart,” he could barely keep
the surprise out of his voice.
“What the matter Rufus?” Tifa asked. “One would think
that you thought Zack wouldn’t tell us what you wanted to see him for.” Rufus
snuck a look at Zack from underneath the sliver cloak.
“Tifa…” Rude started but Tifa brought up her hand,
cutting him off. Sure, she had been forced to work with them when she and the
rest of the gang broke in to Shin-Ra to blow up the mako reactors but it didn’t
mean she trusted them…not after what Zack had told her about them helping Hojo
keep Zack and Cloud away from them and hiding the fact that Cloud might still
be alive.
“Miss Lockhart,” Rufus started but stopped when she
glared at him.
“And don’t try your manipulative behaviour on me. I want
answers,” Tifa informed him. “You told Zack that Cloud is still alive. I’m here
to find out if that is true or if you are playing a sick joke on us because you
no longer have the whole world under your control any more.”
“Miss Lockhart, I would never do that,” Rufus denied only
for Tifa to arch an eyebrow.
“Funny, your father said the same thing only for us to
find out that he had been behind the order of allowing Hojo take Zack and Cloud
and do his sadistic experiments on them…including allowing Hojo to overdose
Cloud on Mako and Jenova cells and in the process, killing the man I love,”
Tifa hissed out as she moved closer to Rufus. Zack noticed Rude tensing when
Tifa said ‘love’ but brushed it off. He knew that Rude had a crush on Tifa but
also knew it would never be returned, no matter what the bald man did.
“Miss Lockhart,” Rufus choked off when Tifa’s hand
clenched around his neck. Zack brought out his buster and another sword and
pointed them both at Reno and Rude as they moved to get Tifa off their boss.
“You will answer my questions and you will answer them
truthfully. Is Cloud alive? Don’t start the crap about clones or anything like
that. Is Cloud Strife alive?”
“Yes,” Rufus choked out.
“Have you known about this for the last nine years?” Tifa
asked, barely holding onto her anger.
“Yes,” Rufus admitted. Zack let out a hissed breath as he
glared at Rufus. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“You have willingly held this back from us knowing that
we were in mourning for Cloud?” Tifa demanded. “Why didn’t you tell us?”
“Because he was supposed to become my bodyguard,” Rufus
admitted. “But someone broke into the lab and took him out. We have no idea
where he is.” Zack caught on as his hands tightened on his swords and he
brought them around Tifa, pointing them at Rufus’s throat as Tifa took a step
back, shocked.
“So when you asked me to become your hired muscles, it’s
because you knew that Cloud would come after you and you wanted me to fight him
in order to protect you,” Zack demanded. Rufus clutched his throat as he fought
to breathe before he looked up at Zack and Tifa and nodded.
“Yes,” Rufus admitted. “Cloud is not the same man you
once knew. Due to the extreme and repetitively exposure to Mako and Jenova
cells, he is now under the control of them and he has gone through extensive
training – he is in the same level as Sephiroth, Genesis and Angeal used to
be.” Zack felt his muscles slacken.
“He is now a first class SOLDIER,” Zack whispered before
he turned his face away, closing his eyes.
“Where is he?” Tifa asked, almost tearfully. “Where is
Cloud?!”
“We don’t know,” Rufus told her. “We have checked
everywhere but we have come up empty.” Tifa threw herself at him, pounding his
chest.
“Don’t do that! Tell me where he is! Where have you
hidden him, you selfish heartless bastard!” Tifa screamed. Zack placed his
swords back into their sheaths before he moved forward and pulled Tifa off
Rufus, holding her close to him.
“Sh,” Zack hushed her as he rocked her while she sobbed
into his chest before he looked up at Rufus. “I want everything you had on
Cloud and anything you have on the people who kidnapped him and all the places
you have searched.”
Rufus motioned to Rude and he made his way through the
other door to pick up the files that they had on Cloud, the experiments and
where they had searched. A part of him hesitated in giving Tifa the file…he had
come to admire and like the young woman while they had worked together that had
slowly turned to love. He had hoped that one day, she would have saw his side
and come to like him the same way he liked her but now he was realising that
she would never like him the way he wanted her to…her heart belongs to Cloud
Strife, no matter what he was like.
Sighing deeply, he headed back out into the main room to
see that Zack and Tifa were now standing. Tifa’s red eyes were even redder from
her tears. Zack was still glaring at Rufus and Reno before he lifted dark eyes
to meet Rude’s. Rude cleared his throat as he moved closer to them and handed
the file over to Zack, who took it and handed it over to Tifa, who hugged it to
her like it was a lifeline.
“We’re going home,” Zack helped Tifa up before shooting
Rufus a glare as he opened his mouth to say something. “I will deal with you
later.” He led Tifa out of the building and slammed the door close behind him,
leaving the three men in silence.
Aerith was pacing in front of the living room window,
looking out of it whenever she stopped. The children were lying, stomach down,
on the ground alternating between drawing and watching Aerith before Marlene
got annoyed.
“Aerith,” Aerith turned to face her. “Why are you
pacing?” Aerith sighed as she walked over to the children and knelt down in
front of them. Marlene and Denzel scrambled to a sitting position. They had
noticed that Zack and Tifa had been acting weird since they heard Tifa shouting
but left it alone because they didn’t want to be on Tifa’s bad side.
“Remember when I told you about Tifa and Zack’s friends,
Cloud?” she got nods. “Well, for a long time, we had believed that he was dead
but now, we have received news that he might not be dead. Zack and Tifa have
gone to see a man who had told them this to get answers.” Denzel tilted his
head, curious.
“What, someone hid Cloud from you?” Denzel asked and
Aerith nodded.
“Yes, something like that but we don’t know if it’s true
or if someone is just playing a bad joke on us,” Aerith explained as she tried
to brush the nightmare she had about Cloud out of her mind. She had told Zack
about the nightmare of Cloud but both of them didn’t want to put stock into the
nightmare until they had concrete answers in case Aerith’s dreams were playing
tricks on her. Marlene scrunched up her nose.
“I think Cloud is still alive,” Denzel and Aerith looked
at her. Marlene shrugged. “Don’t ask me why but I just get this really strong
feeling that Cloud is alive.” Marlene turned back to her drawings. Denzel
looked at Aerith before he shrugged as well and turned back to his drawings.
Aerith just sat there watching the children when she heard the roar of Zack’s
motorbike.
For once, the children didn’t leap up and run to the
door, they just stayed on the floor instinctively knowing that the adult needed
to talk first before they could greet any of them. Aerith got up from her spot
on the floor and moved over the front door just as Zack and Tifa came through.
Zack met Aerith eyes as Tifa pushed past them and ran up
the stairs before closing the bedroom door softly. Aerith watched Tifa leave
before she looked at Zack with worried eyes.
“Rufus admitted that he knew that Cloud was alive because
he was planning on using Cloud as his bodyguard,” Zack whispered. Aerith
covered her mouth as understanding dawned on her before she shook her head.
“No,” she whispered in denial. “Then that would mean he
asked you to…” she trailed off as Zack looked away and felt her blood boil with
rage. Zack looked up when he felt the air change and saw her soft green eyes
hardening with rage. Reaching up, he cupped her cheek and watched as her eyes
lost the rage and the air settles down.
“It’s okay, I’m going to make it clear to Rufus exactly
how I feel about him doing that,” Zack promised her before he slid his arm over
her shoulders, pulling into his embrace. “There’s no need to go all guardian
angel right now.” Aerith giggled as his nickname for her ability to wipe out
the planet if her anger ever got out of control.
“I just hate this, Zack,” Aerith whispered as she pulled
her face away from his neck so she could look into his eyes. “I hate seeing
Tifa all broken because she found out that Cloud is still alive and I hate
seeing you blame yourself that you couldn’t save him and I hate that Rufus is
letting the chips fall where they may just to watch the reaction of his
entertainment.” Zack nodded as he brushed his lips over her forehead.
“I know you do, baby, but I promise you, we will work it
all out and we’ll become stronger in the end for it,” Zack promised. Aerith
sighed as she closed her eyes, resting her forehead on Zack’s chin, her heart breaking
for the young woman up the stairs locked in her room.
Tifa found herself sitting on her bed. She had ignored
the knocks on the doors and Aerith asking her if she was hungry. Her eyes were
locked on the sky outside her window as she watched it changed from day to dusk
to night. Her memories of Cloud had taken over her mind and body, forcing her
to remember everything about him.
She remembered when she first met him, his promise, him
coming back and they finally taking that step in their relationship and finding
out that he was dead and losing their baby all at the one time.
Shifting red eyes, she stared at the plain manila folder,
which was lying at the end of the bed, for a long moment before she picked it
up and opened it to reveal a small 100x100 photo stapled to the top of the
papers.
“Oh god,” Tifa ran a finger down Cloud’s cheek in the
picture. He looked terrible; his bright blue eyes were even brighter with tint
of green. They were filled with blankness, telling her that he had lost all hope
for living. Tearing her eyes away from the pictures, she started reading the
report.
Name: Cloud Strife
Age:
16
Rank:
infantryman (Applied to be SOLDIER but failed)
Project:
C
Strife
was picked up along with Zack Fair (1st class SOLDIER & Project
Z) and has shown to be a very good test subject…an interesting test subject due
to surviving Sephiroth (Project S) and killed Sephiroth (Body was recovered but
was unable to be saved). Experimentations will be started after initial
testings.
Tifa fought back her tears as she read all the testings
they had done on Cloud. He had been cut open ‘Organs removed and weighed – no discolouration’, forced through
Mako and Jenova cells injections ‘Patient
screams when Jenova cells are injected. Grits teeth when Mako cells are
injected…pain threshold is now increasing’, they put him through training
of weapons and marital arts ‘Strength
has increased…can now take out 500 people without breaking into sweat’,
they cut him just to watch him heal ‘Healing
ability is marvellous…soon will be able to heal on brink of death’.
Tifa closed the file and her eyes as Hojo’s conclusion
ran around in her head, tormenting and mocking her.
‘Project C has
indeed become a fabulous and interesting subject. Strength and pain threshold
is off the charts. Body has adapted well to Mako and Jenova cells. He is,
indeed, the most perfect SOLDIER. We have successfully removed all memories of
his past life and his name. He no longer remembers anything of the life before.
Next…we
will direct our next tests toward his sperm – so far, neither Mako nor Jenova
have been presented as genetic. My aims are to correct this so he would be able
to produce the perfect off-spring with the genetic abilities of Mako and
Jenova…’
Tifa placed the folder on the bedside table before she
turned her head back to look out of the window as a few tears escaped from her
eyes as the stars twinkled brightly in the night sky…just like that fateful
night…
“So, why did you
want to see me?” Tifa asked as she pulled herself onto the water tower. She was
wearing a short blue dress with her hair tucked behind her ears. Cloud was
sitting next to her dressed in a white shirt and blue knee length jeans. His
wild blonde hair was tied into an elastic band.
“I
wanted to let you know that I’m leaving at the end of the summer,” Cloud told
her, looking up into the bright starry night sky. Tifa looked at him before she
looked toward the sky as well.
“All
the boys are leaving,” Tifa reminded and Cloud nodded.
“I
know but I’m going to join SOLDIER,” Cloud told her. Tifa looked at him with a
quiet gasp. “There’s someone I want to notice me and joining SOLDIER will get
that.” Tifa pulled her eyes away from Cloud as tears started to film them.
“Can
you promise me…?” Tifa trailed off. Cloud pulled his eyes away from the stars
and looked toward her to see that she was staring up at the sky. “Can you
promise me that whenever I’m in a bind…you’ll save me?”
“What?”
Cloud shook his head, confused. Tifa brought her head down to meet his blue
gaze.
“I
want to know what it’ll be like to be rescued by a white knight…so, when you
get into SOLDIER…will you save me?” They stared at each other for a long moment
before Cloud gave a soft smile.
“I
promise,” Cloud whispered, reaching out to take her hand into his. Tifa gave
him a wobbly smile and they both turned to look at the stars once more.
“And you came,” Tifa whispered as more tears escaped from
her as she remembered Cloud coming for her at the Mako Reactor despite being
late. Drawing her legs up, Tifa placed her arms on her knees and buried her
face into her arms, crying for her lost love. She couldn’t believe that he was
still alive…that he had been in captivity for the last nine years of his life.
Aerith blinked in the darkness before red numbers blared
at her from the clock on her nightstand. Sitting up, she rubbed her eyes, and
looked around, wondering what had woken her up when she heard muffled sobbing.
Climbing out of her bed, careful not to wake Zack up, she
made her way out of her bedroom and followed the crying till she reached Tifa’s
door and peered into the bedroom to see Tifa sitting on the bed, crying into
her arms.
“Tifa…” Aerith whispered as she walked quickly over the
carpet and climbed onto the bed, taking then younger girl into her arms,
hugging her.
“They took him from me and they hid him away from us like
a caged animal! What have they done to him?!” Tifa cried into Aerith’s chest as
Aerith rocked her. “How could they let us believe that he was dead?! What kind
of people are they that they would do something like that? To destroy him for
their own amusement?!”
“I don’t know,” Aerith whispered as she stroked Tifa’s
hair. “But I can promise this, we will find Cloud, one way or another and we
will make them pay for taking him away from us and making us thinks he was
dead.” Tifa nodded as she let out a shuddering breath.
Aerith rocked Tifa once more, humming a song under her
breath as she felt Tifa’s breathing deepened. Aerith moved her hand in a
complicated movement before a soft blue light settled over Tifa and she felt
Tifa’s head become heavy. Closing her eyes, Aerith continued to hold Tifa close
to her for a long moment before slipping away from the girl and pulled the
cover over the sleeping brunette’s body. She had slipped Tifa a sleeping spell,
knowing that her nightmares would be bad and she wanted Tifa to have one good
night rest while she still could.
Aerith made her way out of the bedroom, closing the door
as she went and she looked into the children room before smiling softly when
she saw that Marlene’s covers was half hanging over the bed. Shaking her head,
she made her way into the bedroom and straightened the covers over Marlene’s
body before checking on Denzel only to see that he was still in the same
position that he had been since he had fallen asleep.
Watching them for a few more moments, she left the room
and made her way down the stairs and into the kitchen where she reached the
kettle only to frown slightly when she saw her mug was already made with hot
coffee.
“Did she go to sleep?” Zack asked. Aerith gave a startled
gasp as she spun around to see Zack was sitting at the table in the dark.
“You scared me,” Aerith hissed at him. He ducked his head
in apology before she sighed and moved over to sit down next to him, wrapping
her hands around the pink mug filled with hot coffee. “I used the sleeping
spell.” Zack gave a short nod.
“Did you read what they did to him?” Zack asked. Aerith
looked at her boyfriend for a long moment before she shook her head, startling
him.
“I couldn’t…I knew what Hojo was like when he was after
me and I don’t want to know what he had been capable off…to destroy a young man
just because he was an ‘fascinating subject’,” Aerith spat out the last words,
unable to keep the bitterness out of her tone.
“He was ruthless,” Zack whispered. Aerith watched as his
shoulders tensed up and his strong hands tightened around the black mug. “He
did the same to me but not as advanced as Cloud as I managed to escape.”
“What did he do to you?” Aerith whispered as she moved in
closer to Zack. She had never asked him what had happened to him during his
captivity. She had seen the haunted look in his eyes whenever he thought back
to that moment and didn’t want to push him but she knew that Zack was close to
the breaking point…especially after finding out that Cloud could still be
alive.
Zack took in a shuddering breath as he sat back on the
chair and stared into nothing.
“I woke up, briefly, in the laboratory after they had
picked us up. He said I was a disappointment before he turned to Cloud and said
that he would make an interesting subject,” Zack shook his head. “A lot of it
is fuzzy because I was kept under due to the drugs, Mako and Jenova cells but
the things I do remember…they always involved Hojo talking into his damn
recording, muttering something about weighing and organs before I would feel a
sharp pain of someone cutting into me.” Aerith placed her forehead on Zack’s
shoulder, trying to comfort him as she held her tears back. “When I finally
woke up, I was stuck in the large vial of Mako liquid. Three scientists came in
and said, to each other, that Project C – Cloud – had died to overdosing of
Mako and Jenova cells and that Hojo had planned to dump the body. That was when
I finally lost it…I had broken my promise that I would look after Cloud and I
broke out of the vial and found the morgue…I found him there, he was all stiff
and pale. I placed a hand on his neck…in hope that he was alive but he wasn’t
and I made a promise that I would look after Tifa before leaving.” Zack took in
a shuddering breath. “I wanted to bring his body with me but there was no way
to sneak it out without everyone else knowing.”
“Zack…” Aerith lifted her head as she stared at her
boyfriend, tearfully, but he continued to stare off into nothing.
“I failed him…I left him in Hojo hands for god knows how
long and he’s out there, a pawn for someone else,” Zack gritted out. Aerith
rose to her knees and pressed her forehead to the side of his head.
“You didn’t know,” Aerith whispered. “They lied to you,
they knew that he was alive yet they lied to you…whether it was part of a sick
joke or something worse, they knew what they were doing when they told you
Cloud was dead and Rufus knew all this time…even when we fought along him to bring
down the rest of the SOLDIERs that had gone amok – he had numerous of chances
to tell us but he kept it to himself for selfish reasons…if you are going to
blame someone, lay it at their feet where it belongs, not on your shoulders.”
Aerith cupped Zack’s face and turned his head to meet hers only for her heart
to break when she saw tears film his lavender eyes.
“He’s been alive all this time,” Zack choked out. Aerith
muffled a sob as she threw her arms around his neck, hugging him as he clung to
her, wishing that he could go back in time to save Cloud and live their lives
like they had planned. Zack buried his face into her neck as tears dripped down
onto her skin as he fought to hold back his tears only to finally let go out
his emotions since finding out that Cloud could still be alive.
The next morning, the front door slammed open, almost
shaking the bar to its core but remarkably, it didn’t wake anyone up in the
house. The group of people made their way through the bar and up the stairs
into the living room where a sleeping couple were on the couch.
“Get up, we have a mission,” Barrett ordered, slamming
the door, startling Aerith and Zack who were sleeping on the couch.
“Wha…” Zack rubbed bleary eyes before meeting the dark
brown eyes of the dark man who was glaring down at him. “Oh, get lost.” Zack
turned on his side, more than willing to go back to sleep if it wasn’t for the
large man’s hand on Zack’s shoulder.
“You heard me, get up!” Barrett roared, startling Aerith
and Zack into jumping up from the couch.
“What’s going on?” a soft female voice asked and they
turned to see Tifa standing at the bottom of the steps, rubbing an eye with
Denzel hugging a leg while Marlene was hugging the other leg, curious to why
her father was there and shouting at Zack.
“We have a mission,” Barrett straightened up, sending his
daughter a warm smile but he wasn’t going to greet her, they needed to get a
move on.
“By who?” Zack asked, now alert and curious to what was
going on. Despite the difference of the men, they had slowly come to trust each
other but Barrett had a hard time trusting anyone who used to work for Shinra
and preferred to keep his distance from Zack.
“By ma dad,” Yuffie told them as she made her way into
the living room. Zack crossed his arms when he saw the young thief make her way
into his house. He had met the young girl during his mission to Wutai and she
had haunted him ever since, sending him e-mails that led him on a ‘treasure
hunt’ and ended up with her stealing the items and running away from him before
he could catch up with her.
They had crossed path a few years later when they had
gone on a mission to bring down the rest of Shin-Ra and she had stolen their
materia that involved them in chasing her to get them back.
“To knock you over the head because it turned out that
you had been stealing materia again?” Zack asked, arching an eyebrow. Aerith
rolled her eyes in amusement while Yuffie glared at the older man.
“I still have a mean right hook,” Yuffie warned him,
bunching up her right hand.
“Now, now,” Aerith stepped in between them to make sure
that Yuffie didn’t carry through with her threats.
“What’s the mission?” Cid came through into the living
room with Vincent and Red XII.
“Our men had gone on a mission and found what should have
been an abandoned building of Shin-Ra but our scans tells us that the building
is in use and people are living there,” Yuffie took up stage. “Dad wants us to
check it out because he had contacted Rufus and found out that the building
shouldn’t be in use.”
“Hm,” Aerith tapped her chin with a finger. “That does
sound curious. I wonder who would set up camp in a Shin-Ra building.”
“Why do they want us to check it out?” Tifa asked as she
moved closer. Marlene was more at the front than Denzel because she already
knew the people while Denzel was new to them. He hid behind Tifa, occasionally
peeking out from behind her hip.
“Because we have dealt with Shin-Ra before and we’re less
likely to kill everyone on sight…well, some of us are…” Yuffie looked at Barrett
with an arched eyebrow while he just glared right back at her. Marlene
smothered her giggles while Tifa shook her head.
“Okay, you guys sort it out – I’m going to give the kids
their breakfast,” Tifa led the kids into the kitchen where everyone could hear
Marlene and Denzel play arguing over what they should have for breakfast with
Tifa play scolding them whenever they asked for chocolate pie or cake.
“When do they want us there?” Zack asked, turning back to
the others once the arguing had settled down. Barrett crossed his arms.
“This afternoon, might as well get it over and done with.
I got this weekend off to do this mission but I gotta get back to work on
Monday,” Barrett informed them.
“Same here,” Cid spoke up. “Shera needs me back home on
Monday.”
“I’ve got lessons to teach on Monday,” Yuffie piped up.
Zack sighed as he nodded.
“Fine,” Zack turned to Aerith. “Do you think the
neighbours will be able to look after the kids tonight?” Aerith nodded.
“Yes, we had talked about her having the kids tonight but
we never settled on the plan as I didn’t know what we were doing,” Aerith told
him before she grabbed the phone, kissed Zack’s cheek and made her way up the
stairs to have the phone conversation in private. Zack watched her leave before
he turned back to the others.
“Let’s get make a plan,” Zack told them. Yuffie brought
forward the plans of the building and they spread the works out on to the large
coffee table as everyone threw suggestions back and forth while Aerith made her
way into the kitchen to help Tifa with the breakfast and make coffee for the
gang.
Night-time came all too quick for the gang as Aerith and
Tifa dropped the kids off at the neighbours before they met up with the gang
once more outside Seventh Heaven. They had planned it that they would take the
large jeeps that they had acquired the last time they all worked together
because it turned out the building wasn’t as far away from Midgar as they first
thought it was.
They had argued several times over the plans before they
finally called a truce on one of them and were eager to implement it and get
back to their normal lives as much as they could without losing anyone in the
process.
They finally reached the building and Zack looked up at
it before suppressing a shudder. He would never tell anyone how it reminded him
so much of the lab that had held him and Cloud. He turned around when he felt
Aerith place a soft hand on his shoulder and gave her a soft smile before he
went into SOLDIER mode.
“Aerith, you are to stay out here,” Zack said. Aerith
opened her mouth to protest but Zack shook her head. “We don’t know anything
about this group and they could know about you. I don’t want to risk it.” Both
of them stared at each other before Aerith gave a slow nod, her eyes telling
him that they were going to have words about it when he came back.
Zack turned to the others and saw they were ready and led
the way into the building, all of them keeping an eye out for any members of
Shin-Ra or innocents that had stumbled over the building and decided to use it
as a shelter.
They reached a hallway that split off into many different
sections. Zack came to a stop and looked at everyone. “Do you all remember the
plan?” He got nod. “Okay, we split up, remember to check in if an area is clear
or you have found something,” Zack ordered and got nods from everyone as they
all went in the direction they were to go. Zack checked out each room but all
he could find were scattered reports. He couldn’t find any sign of life and
wondered just why Yuffie’s father had sent them on this mission.
It didn’t look like anyone had been here if the dust
indicated anything. He moved past the rooms till he found himself in a
relatively clean room. Stopping in his tracks, he took in the sight. There were
no dust and the reports weren’t scattered all the over the place. It looks like
someone had been in the midst of cleaning up. Frowning, he moved closer to the
reports and peeked at the papers only to frown when he saw they were in short
hand. Shaking his head, he made his way out of the room and back into the
hallway when there was a vibration in his trousers.
Grabbing his phone, he flipped it open and greeted the
person on the other side.
“Everything is cleared on our end, we’ll meet you
outside,” Barrett told Zack, who gave a short nod.
“Alright,” Zack hung up the phone, placed it back into
his pocket and continued on the path till he reached a large open area with a
door on the other. Zack looked around to make sure that no one was coming up
behind him before he made his way over to the door only for the door open and a
very familiar blonde haired male to step through.
“Cloud?” Zack whispered out, disbelief clear in his
voice.
