“Hey,” Gadot said calmly as he approached his oldest friend. “I didn’t expect to see you back here so soon. Don’t you have some beast to destroy?” He ask curiously as he stood next to him with his arms crossed.
“Been there. Done that.” Snow said casually as he entered his familiar home. “I decided I needed to come back. Just in case something happened here.” He flipped on the light and tossed his bag on the floor before removing his worn combat boots.
“What? Like I can’t handle it?” Gadot joked as he sat on the nearby sofa.
“Ha, I’m sure you’d try.” Snow wasn’t sure how to feel about being back. Without Serah. Without
Lightning. Everything was so confusing. He just knew he had to be there. After his meeting with Fang, he couldn’t leave his friends to fend for themselves. Not again. Her ominous warning echoed in his head constantly. The only place he could think to be was there. In New Bodhum.
“You here for good or just until some new ugly beast appears somewhere in the damn time-line again?” Gadot asked as he raised his arms behind his head, letting out a small yawn. It was late when he returned to his tiny village. So late that the moon would soon be setting and its bright counterpart would be rising in it’s place.
“Who knows?” Snow said as he also let out a yawn. “Listen, I think I’m going to get some sleep. We’ll talk in the morning, okay?” He said as he stood up and removed his jacket, placing it on the back of the dining room chair that stood behind him.
“Yeah, sure.” Gadot answered as he laid himself down on the couch and no sooner fell asleep.
Snow laughed at the sight. No matter what sort of danger may have been lurking, Gadot was always one to fall asleep quickly and effortlessly.
As he entered the bedroom he once shared with Serah, he couldn’t help but to be left with this
overwhelming sense of sadness. Was it because they were no longer together? Or was it something else? He couldn’t be sure.
Slowly he removed his clothes and collapsed on his bed in his boxers. He glanced over to see the stars shimmering in the sky through the window beside his bed. The sky seemed so calm. The breeze entering the room comforted him and helped him fall asleep.
He was hoping that maybe he would be visited by Lightning that night. It had been almost a year, maybe longer, since their last encounter. He didn’t even know if she was okay. He got used to the idea of her invading his dreams and his lucid thoughts. He ached for her every day.
The next day, he was awoken by an ear shattering booming sound. He jumped from his bed and ran to the window. Darkness was quickly filling the sky.
He got dressed as fast as he could, only to hear Gadot and the others screaming. He ran outside and that’s when he saw it. A massive could of what Hope referred to as ‘chaos’ was quickly approaching.
“Hurry! Everyone inside!” He commanded. Motioning for his friends to follow him. “NOW!” He yelled. Pulling everyone out of their frozen-in-fear poses.
Everyone ran inside and huddled together. Snow could see the fear all over their faces. He could feel their fear. He didn’t know what to do. He had only heard stories of the dark purple and black clouds of despair from Hope and his employees.
He glanced over his shoulder to see how close it was and, within seconds, he felt it. He felt the sorrow and pain rush through his body. His heart was being shattered. He let out a loud cry as he fell to the ground.
Lebreau rushed to his aid. There were no obvious wounds. Gadot grabbed the medic kit and started using anything he could think of to help his friend. Snow couldn’t move. Tears poured down his face as he stared at the ceiling.
The first wave of Chaos had passed. The sun was returning to the sky and everyone began to feel calm again. Gadot and Maqui lifted Snow and carried him to his bed while Yuj and Lebreau hurried to his side with an elixir they found in the medic bag.
“Here, drink this.” Lebreau said calmly as she carefully poured it between Snow’s lips. He did. Without a fight but he knew it wouldn’t help. It was at that very moment that he knew what had happened.
“Serah….” He whispered. “She’s…” Tears filled his eyes as he found the courage to say the words. “She’s…gone.”
They all stood in silence. Looking back and forth at each other. They knew it, too. They just didn’t want to admit it. Gadot put his arm around Lebreau and pulled her into him. Maqui’s knees went weak causing him to collapse on the ground whe Yuj fell back against the wall behind him.
“She’s dead.” Snow’s voice cracked as the sadness filled his very soul.
Nobody moved. They all stayed with him for hours. Lebreau couldn’t think of anything else to do but cook and Gadot and the others eventually left to find alcohol. All of the alcohol.
A few days had passed and Snow still hadn’t moved from the bed he once shared with Serah. He could still smell her shampoo on the pillow next to him.
His friends became concerned. There wasn’t anything else they could think to do except make a call to Hope. They weren’t sure how’d they do it since they knew he was still so far into the future but Gadot suddenly remembered the amulet he saw Snow wearing when he returned to New Bodhum.
He searched Snow’s belongings for the item and, when he found it, it lit up immediately. He looked at the others and shrugged. “I guess I turned it on. Wish me luck.”
Gadot disappeared into millions of little pixels only to suddenly be standing in Academia. The city was busy but he had one objective. To find Hope.
“Excuse me?” Gadot said as he approached a perky young blonde. “I’m looking for a guy named Hope.”
“Heh, a lot of people always look for Hope. You’ll need to give me more information.” She replied in an overly chipper voice.
“It’s about a mutual friend. Snow. Villiers?” He confirmed by showing her the amulet. Hoping that would be enough to prove to her that he wasn’t trying to trick her. As soon as she was presented with the amulet, her face went flush.
“Oh…Oh…Poor Snow.” She gasped as she placed her hand over her mouth. “This way, please.” She motioned for him to follow her. “Hope…has been trying to fix the situation but…” she couldn’t being herself to finish her sentence as they entered his work station.
“Gadot…” Hope was surprised and confused. “What are you doing here?”
“I don’t have a lot of time but Snow isn’t okay. He hasn’t left his bed in forever. He won’t speak.
He’s…broken.” Gadot said as he shook his head. “We know Serah is…gone. We need your help to bring him back. Just because she and Noel failed….”
Hope quickly cut him off. “They didn’t fail. They defeated Caius.” He said sternly. “It’s just…something else happened when they did. I’m trying to figure out what…”
“So Serah is alive?!” His eyes lit up with hope.
“No. She…didn’t make it but she fought with every ounce of her being and they defeated him before he could destroy the world.” Hope’s voice was small.
“So, will you help us with Snow or not?” Hope could sense the anger in Gadot’s voice.
“I can’t but…he can.” Pointing at Noel, he waved for him to join them.
Hope and Gadot filled Noel in on the situation in New Bodhum and, without hesitation, he was ready to join Gadot.
“I may not like the guy but we both loved Serah.” He admitted to Gadot as the entered the portal.
Hope stood and watched as they disappeared. Unsure of what to do next, he returned to his studies. He was determined to find out everything he could about the newly released chaos infusions that were eating the world.
“Lightning…Where are you? What do we do now?” He sighed to himself as he sat at his desk and began to scroll through the reports on his tablet.
