Chapter 82: Crash
As Aerith continued to cry, the door on the right side of the bridge opened, causing her to gasp at the figure standing there.
"You?!" she exclaimed. "How did you get in here?"
"I've been hiding here since this morning, before the real me showed you in," Cait Sith replied. "Like I said, they never revoked my clearance, so I can get into here at any time. I knew you would get into this kind of trouble." He then noticed the pink puddle that had once been Sephiroth's avatar. "Good lord, what the hell happened in here?!"
"It's a long story," Aerith replied as she dried the tears from her face. Slowly, she realized that she was going to be okay.
"I'm afraid we don't have time for it," Cait Sith dismissed. "We've got seven minutes left before the Urchin blows to hell. If you want to see Cloud again, you might want to get out of here."
"Who's going to pilot the Urchin?" she asked.
"I will, of course," the cat replied.
Aerith began to open her mouth to protest, but she was quickly silenced.
"You do remember that this is not my real body, right?" Cait Sith reminded her.
She nodded.
"Then you need to get into command chair," he commanded.
Realizing that it was for the best, Aerith quietly sat in Bestla's throne. She saw Cait Sith press a button, and moments later, a glass dome encased the chair. She then felt herself falling rapidly. Then, she was able to see the clear blue sky, and the Urchin grow smaller and smaller. Suddenly, her view was obstructed by the opening parachute, but, once she hit the ocean water and the parachute deflated beside the escape pod, her view was restored.
By now, the Urchin was waiting right next to the barrier. Aerith had lost track of the time, and kept gazing, waiting for the moment to happen. Finally, the Urchin, the barrier, and everything else disappeared in a blinding flash of light. When the light had subsided, both the Urchin and the barrier were gone. The Northern Crater stood unprotected.
Aerith gave a sigh and fell backward.
"That Urchin," she whispered. "It was so nice I had to destroy it twice."
It was almost over now; they were free to enter the Northern Crater at any time.
THAT NIGHT...
Jessie popped a bottle of champagne and poured some into a glass that Barret was holding. The entire group had decided to celebrate the victory over the barrier, as it seem to be their final obstacle.
"Into the Northern Crater we go!" Cid announced as he took a liberal sip from his own glass.
"As soon as we get word from Cloud," Vincent added.
"And assuming we ain't hungover tomorrow!" Barret said.
"Can't I have some champagne?" Yuffie asked, as innocently as possible.
"Of course you can," Jessie replied. "When you're twenty-one."
"Dammit," Yuffie muttered. "Five years is too long!"
"Aren't you learning to drive right about now?" Jessie asked.
"Yes," Yuffie replied.
"Then this would be the worst time in your life to drink," Jessie insisted.
"Where's Cloud and Aerith?" Cid asked.
"In the cabin," Barret replied. "Aerith nearly died; she's really shaken up."
"It doesn't surprise me," Cid agreed. "I'm kind of wondering."
"What?" asked Jessie.
"It just crossed my mind," Cid replied. "How many lives does Aerith have?"
Nobody responded, as nobody found it funny.
"I mean," he continued, "will they eventually run out, like in a video game?"
Everyone suddenly gave Cid an annoyed look.
MEANWHILE….
Cloud and Aerith sat on the sofa together in the central cabin. Aerith had kept her jeans, but switched to a gray tank top, suggesting that she had no interest in joining the festivities outside.
"What's wrong?" he asked, noticing her unusual silence.
"Nothing, really," she replied. "Except for the fact that I almost died today. Again."
"You did better on the Urchin than I did," Cloud assured her. "I did die."
Aerith sat silently for a moment with her right index finger to her mouth.
Cloud could tell that she was thinking something. It was certain that she had a lot on her mind; she had been through a lot in the past several days.
"You know what you need?" she began.
"I don't need anything," he said, surprised that she had him on her mind. "Except for you to be okay."
Aerith then smiled, and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You need a back rub," she announced.
Cloud found that rather random. Why she would want to do him a favor while she was distraught was beyond him.
"What brought that up?" he asked.
"Maybe I want to bond with my fiancé, who I love very much," she replied. "They say its a good way for couples to bond. You've never had one of my massages, have you?"
"I don't think so," he replied.
"Well, that's about to change," she said. "On the bed."
Cloud obediently climbed onto the bed and lay face-down.
"You're going to have to take your shirt off, silly," she informed him.
He pulled his shirt off and tossed it aside. He then heard, and felt, Aerith climb onto the bed, followed by the feeling of two feminine hands digging into his shoulders.
"Have you ever had a massage from anyone?" she asked as she rotated her thumbs. "I haven't seen so many knots in my life."
"Not that I remember," Cloud replied, not knowing what a knot was.
Aerith cracked her knuckles. "This is going to take a while," she said. She then shimmied forward, with her knees touching his abdomen.
He felt that her knees were bare. Looking back, he verified his suspicions and confirmed that she was no longer wearing pants, and a touch of her hip revealed that she had ditched her panties as well.
"What?" she asked innocently as she resumed the massage. "They say that when massaging your significant other, you're supposed to wear as little as possible yourself. It makes it more sensual."
"You've been reading books?" he asked.
"Well," she replied, "we are getting married soon." She then paused. Every time she mentioned that, it made her think of wedding details. There was something that she wanted to get off of her chest. "I'm not inviting my mom," she said.
"I understand," he said. He had seen that coming; he would be quite surprised if she had wanted to invite her.
"In fact, I need to make sure she won't track us down and find us," Aerith continued.
"We have some powerful friends," Cloud assured her. "If she's dumb enough to try to attend, she'll never make it inside the venue."
Aerith smiled as she bent down and kissed him.
"That's my bodyguard," she said. She then recalled something else that had been on her mind. This was more of a curiosity than a concern. "There is something I've been meaning to ask you, by the way."
"Go ahead," Cloud approved.
"After you killed Sephiroth," she began, "what happened?"
"We tried to return to normal," Cloud replied, "but we just couldn't. Do you know where Meteor hit?"
"I'm afraid not, babe," Aerith replied as she continued to care for his shoulders. "I was kind of dead, wasn't I?"
"Midgar," he said. "Meteor struck Midgar and destroyed the city. The survivors built a city called Edge out of what was left of Sectors Three and Four. I lived there."
"What did you do?" she asked.
"I ran a courier service," he replied.
"A what?!" she giggled.
"That's right," Cloud replied. "I delivered stuff. Things seemed fine for a couple of years, but then I got sick."
"Badly?" she asked.
He nodded.
"It was called Geostigma. Around that time, three guys showed up. I think they were called Loz, Yazoo, and Kadaj. They looked like each was their own person, but they were actually avatars of Sephiroth."
"From beyond the grave?!" Aerith exclaimed.
"That's what it looked like," he said. "Those weren't like the ones that tried to kill you; they weren't made of Jenova cells. They were actually human beings."
"How did he control them?"
"Some psychic power from the Lifestream," Cloud replied. "I guess."
Aerith moved from his shoulders to his spine.
"It almost sounds like Sephiroth is more dangerous dead than alive," she observed as she continued to eliminate the knots.
"You're right," Cloud said. "We all realized that. But there's really no alternative. He's stopping Holy from moving, so he can't be left there."
"What if we petrified him?" she suggested. "I mean, he wouldn't be dead, but he wouldn't be exactly living either. He certainly wouldn't enter the Lifestream."
It sounded like a great idea, except for one problem.
"I don't know how to petrify a human being," Cloud said. "At least not in the literal sense."
"We can with contain materia," Aerith suggested.
Cloud turned his head to view her as best as he could. I had somewhat figured that she would know a solution; this girl was definitely smarter than she looked.
"And where might we find some?" he asked.
"Ruby Weapon," Aerith replied. "My biological mom told me it's what's left of it when you kill it. But it's not any ordinary materia. You can cast a break spell with it, and pertify something or someone, but you have to handle it carefully. You don't want to drop it."
"What happens if I drop it?" Cloud asked, unable to resist.
"It'll explode," she answered. "You and everything within seven feet of you will be forever petrified."
"That would suck," Cloud observed.
"And it would only work on something the size of a human being, so we'd first have to reduce him to that," she said as she moved to his shoulder blades.
"That's nothing the Knights can't take care of," he said.
Aerith bend down and kissed him again.
"And Cloud?" she continued. "For the wedding program, I want Ifalna to be listed as my mother."
"You got it," Cloud replied, somewhat amused how she kept changing the subject like that.
ON THE BRIDGE...
Barret, Jessie, Yuffie, Cid, and Vincent were still on the bridge of the Highwind, having finished off the champagne. All were drunk except for Barret, whose size gave him a huge tolerance, and Yuffie, whose age prevented her from drinking.
"So you're dead," Cid began to Vincent, "and you can still get drunk?"
"You bet your ass," Vincent said.
"So, do you also get horny?" Cid then inquired.
"I'm still human," Vincent replied as he toppled over, causing Cid to break out laughing.
Meanwhile, a sober Yuffie and a rather drunk Jessie were in the opposite corner.
"After we kill Sephiroth," Yuffie said, "you're going to do what?!"
"Ask Barret out," Jessie replied. "Why not? He's so tall!"
"He's also thirteen years older than you," Yuffie added.
"So what?" Jessie dismissed. "Age is just a number. Besides, I'm supposed to be dead anyway!"
At that moment, a buzz sounded the bridge.
"Who could that be?" Jessie slurred. "All of us are here, right?"
Barret, meanwhile, opened the door, causing a woman's shadow to be thrown over the interior floor.
"I'll be damned," he said.
MEANWHILE...
Aerith finished her massage, and laid on her stomach.
"You okay?" Cloud asked as he sat up and cracked his neck.
"My poor thumbs will be," she assured him. "No wonder masseuses make all that money!"
"Is there anything I can do in return?" he asked, in a somewhat naughty tone of voice.
"I could use a butt massage," Aerith purred.
"What's that?" he asked, pretending to be naïve; he just wanted to hear her say something sexy.
"Silly!" she replied. "It's where you massage my butt!"
"Is that so?" he asked.
"I'd like that," she answered.
Cloud got into position and began to massage her feet. He then moved to her calves, to her thighs, and then back down to her calves again.
"Stop teasing me already!" Aerith playfully reprimanded. "This girl wants her butt massaged!"
At that moment, there was a rap at the door.
"Suckage!" she exclaimed as she pounded the bed with her fist.
Both of them got up off of the bed. Cloud easily found his shirt on the floor, and quickly slipped it on. Aerith was less fortunate.
"Where are my pants?" she asked herself frantically as she placed her hands on her hips and paced around the room.
There was a second knock at the door.
"Where did you put them?" he asked.
"I tossed them somewhere," she replied as she quickly checked under the bed.
A third knock sounded at the door.
"Forget it," Aerith muttered as she hopped onto the bed and slid under the covers. "This will have to do."
"He'll see you," Cloud warned.
"He'll see my upper half," she corrected. "I mean, at least no vagina."
A fourth, louder knock sounded.
"I suppose I better get that," Cloud said as he quickly went to the door. He opened it, and then staggered back in surprise.
Aerith placed her hand on her mouth, wondering who it could be.
Then the visitor entered, making herself visible to all of the room's occupants.
Aerith immediately folded her arms in discomfort.
"Ah, Aerith," Elmyra sighed as she gazed at her daughter with her sad eyes. "I see I'm as unwelcome as I thought."
"There is good reason for that," Aerith sighed.
"Which is why I took the precaution of bringing some friends," Elmyra finished.
Reeve and Parker appeared through the doorway behind her. Parker shut the door behind him before all three visitors turned to face the bed's occupant.
"Make it quick," Aerith hissed. "Cloud's got his sword in here if she tries anything funny."
Elmyra closed her eyes. She was so distraught she was now unable to speak.
Reeve, meanwhile stepped forward.
"Aerith, there's no easy way to tell you this," he began. "Your mom and her boyfriend broke up."
"You came to tell me that?" she asked skeptically. "That's not my problem. It's not my business."
"And the reason," Reeve added. "This is what we all think you really need to know. The fact that you died in the original timeline provoked Ethan Fowler to take matters into his own hands and stop at nothing to restore the original timeline as much as possible. He was the one who arranged that silly, jackassed attempt on your life. Your mom had nothing to do with it."
"Of course," Aerith sighed. "You would know, since you do spy on everybody."
"Aerith," Reeve reprimanded, "I saved your life and gave you a chance to reconcile with your mother today. I'd prefer not to be abused."
Finally, Elmyra was able to speak again.
"As soon as I discovered what he had done, I broke up with him," she said. "He's now forbidden to go anywhere near us. He can't even set foot in the Sector Six slums again."
Aerith looked into Elmyra's eyes. She wanted to believe her, but she needed to be sure. She knew exactly how that would happen.
"Can we talk in private?" she requested.
"Of course," Elmyra replied.
"Cloud," Reeve said, "I need to see you in private anyway."
Cloud nodded as Reeve and Parker led him out of the cabin and closed the door behind him. Reeve then immediately turned to Cloud.
"I no longer have any control over Aerith's life, nor the life of her mother," Reeve began. "I did this as a favor. Maybe a way to right a wrong. I did feel guilty about threatening her."
"You sure?" Cloud asked.
"I am," Reeve insisted. "As you now know, I've had a husband and child to take care of; I'm not as evil as my former employers."
"But?" asked Cloud, knowing one was coming.
"On a personal level," Parker began, "there was something we wanted to talk to you about."
"Go right ahead," Cloud approved, as he wanted to give Aerith and Elmyra some privacy.
"Are you sure this is right for you?" Parker asked.
"You mean Aerith?" Cloud replied. "I'm sure as I'm sure of anything else."
"You know," Reeve began, "you've only known her for a few weeks."
"And you're at least the second man she's been engaged to," Parker added.
"I know that," Cloud assured them. "But I know what I want, and so does she. She's a lot older than when she was engaged the first time. Sorry, but you can't convince me not to marry her."
"I won't stop your marriage to Aerith," Reeve assured him. He then gave Cloud a stern look. "But there is someone who could...if she was around."
It was no mystery to Cloud whom Reeve was referring to. This seemed to be on quite a few minds lately.
"Tifa wouldn't tell Aerith about our fling any more than I would," Cloud insisted. "She said she wants nothing more than for me to be happy."
The other two men each showed a troubled look in their eyes.
"I think I should go," Reeve said, in a defeated tone of voice. "Cait Sith Number Three will be ready by tomorrow."
Without a word, Reeve and Parker began to head for the main exit.
"I feel bad for Cloud," Parker said, at a volume making it obvious he intended for Cloud to hear. "He has someone who loves him unconditionally, and he's blinded by his lust."
Moments later, the two of them were gone. Cloud was left alone in the hallway, taking in what they had said.
"That lying son of a bitch," Cloud grunted. He wondered who else they were venting those ideas to. He had also wondered if Aerith had heard. Of course, wondering would get him nowhere, so he simply returned to his cabin. At he arrived, he saw Elmyra leaving, with a smile on her face.
"You took really good care of her," she said as she hugged him. She then walked off, seemingly to join Reeve and Parker.
Without further ado, Cloud entered the cabin.
Aerith was standing at the mirror, brushing her long hair, which she had let down.
As she was still naked from the waist down, Cloud decided to sit on the bed and enjoy the show.
"Everything okay with your mom?" he asked.
"We hugged and made up," she replied. "And I unblocked her."
"You trust her again?"
"I think so," she answered. She then put her brush down and walked over to the bed. She sat down next to Cloud and began to stroke the nape of his neck. "We were in the middle of something, weren't we?" she asked with a smile.
"I think we were," he replied.
"Yeah, you're supposed to be massaging your fiancé's butt!" Aerith reminded him as she continued to stroke his neck.
And then, she suddenly stopped. She became tense and quiet, placing her hands on her bare knees. Then she gazed at the ceiling with a troubled look on her face.
Cloud noticed the change, and immediately became worried.
"What's wrong?" he inquired.
Aerith replied without turning her head.
"Did you see another woman while I was gone?" she asked.
Cloud was astounded by the question. Of course, the answer was the affirmative, but he was shocked that she asked it. He wondered if someone, possibly Cid or Reeve, had told her. In any case, he knew he could not hesitate too long, or she would become suspicious.
"You really think I would do a thing like that?" he replied.
It was neither a yes nor a no; it was ambiguous enough.
"I'm sorry," she apologized. "I don't know why I even asked that."
"You've been through a lot," said a relieved Cloud as he put his arm around her.
"I've also been starting to wonder," Aerith continued as she turned her head to make eye contact. "I almost died today. That's the second time in three days." She quickly took her right hand off of her knee and squeezed Cloud's left with it. "Cloud, do you think the timeline is fighting back?"
He was silent at first, as he did consider the possibility. But he did not want Aerith any more upset.
"I don't think so," he replied. "I mean, nothing's happened to Jessie. Not to mention, Junon hasn't been rebuilt."
"Cloud, I love you," she assured him. She then rested her head on his shoulder and began to cry. "To the point I almost killed millions."
"What?" he asked in surprise.
"I could've blown up the Urchin in thirty seconds, but instead I risked having Midgar turned to dust to save myself."
"You did what you had to do," Cloud assured her as he kissed her forehead.
Aerith hugged him tightly.
"Cloud, I'm sorry, but I don't think there will be a happy ending tonight," she informed him. "It's all frozen over!"
