Surely, She Ain’t Serious
Chapter 9
When they got to Wutai, things didn’t, of course, go simply. Cid had hoped for them to just be able to drop Yuffie off and then be on their way to Cosmo, but no-- Yuffie insisted on them all coming to dinner at her father’s house. Cid protested a bit, but once he saw the expression of hopeful optimism upon Tifa’s face, he folded. They would stay for dinner, but then that would be it.
He wanted out of Wutai, God damn it. Moreover, Cid wanted to get back to his room on the airship. Mostly, he wanted to be with Tifa again.
So, they were treated to dinner at Yuffie’s family home. The local cuisine of Wutai was far from anything that Cid considered even remotely palatable and while Yuffie and Vincent dove in without any hesitation, and Tifa made a good show of being brave and sampling what was offered, Cid, was sitting, arms crossed, scowling at the spread.
"Aren’t you hungry?" Tifa asked, looking over at the pilot, where he was sitting to her right.
He scoffed. "No."
Her usually bright expression fell and she set down her chopsticks and turned in her seat. "Is something wrong?"
"Just ain’t my thing," Cid replied, moving one of his hands to indicate the food lain out before him. Deciding that he wasn’t going to do anyone any favors by sitting there miserable, he got up from the table and just walked out.
Tifa quickly looked over at the others, but noticed that they were enjoying what they were having and hadn’t given much attention to the blonde’s departure. Vincent looked up from his plate and over at Tifa, sensing her unrest. He, with his exceptional hearing, had noticed Cid’s retreat and once he saw her sitting there, clearly uncertain over what to do, he nodded at her and waved one of his hands toward the door, indicating that she should go after him.
Cid had managed to get a short distance down the street when he heard Tifa’s unmistakable steps coming up behind him. He stopped and lit up a cigarette, giving her the opportunity to catch up with him. The pilot turned and gave her a faint smile as she got close enough. "Food scare you the hell off, too?"
"No, I mean…" Tifa knew that if there was anyone in front of whom she could be honest about Wutain cuisine with, it was Cid and she dropped her social grace. "Actually, it is a little…gross."
"Yeah, Yuff and Vince seemed to be into it but…Christ alive, it’s just…nasty." Cid shook his head and flicked some ashes to the ground.
"Well, they both grew up eating it," Tifa said, wrapping her arms around herself to ward off the night cold.
Cid saw her reaction to the cold and quickly took off his jacket, draping it around her shoulders. "Vince is from here?"
"Oh…thanks." Tifa pulled the coat around herself, appreciating the gesture. "His mother was Wutain."
"I didn’t know that." Cid examined her as she stood, breath billowing out before her.
"Yeah." She sighed heavily. "So…hungry?"
The blond laughed a bit to himself before taking a long drag. "Actually, I am. Wanna head back to the ship and have a good ol’ cold ration?"
Tifa offered him a wide grin. "That sounds wonderful."
Cid slipped his arm through the bend of her left elbow and led her back toward the airship. It was already dark out and he openly wondered as they went, "You think they’ll actually all come back to the ship tonight?"
"You gave the order for them to do so," she replied quietly.
"And since when have my orders counted for shit?" Cid shot back jokingly.
"They all respect you, whether you know it or not." Being in his comforting presence, Tifa relaxed and rested her head on his shoulder as they went.
The pilot just huffed at her claim, not necessarily taking it to heart.
"It’s true." Tifa loved the way he felt next to her as they went on their way. "They all did, during the whole mission."
"You really think?" he asked, knowing that Tifa was far better at reading the others than he had ever been.
"Definitely. They may not have always all shown it very well, but they did." Tifa giggled a bit to herself.
"So, are you sayin’ that they’re gonna all come back up to the ship tonight then?" Cid flicked his spent cigarette away.
"No, they were saying that they’re spending the night here. I guess Nanaki has something he wants to do here, and Vincent’s going with him. And…Yuffie sort of invited all of your crewmen to stay the night at her place." Tifa braced for his reaction, knowing that he was going to be pissed that his word was going unheeded.
But Cid didn’t get upset at all, and in fact, his smirk became a full out smile. "Fuckin’ A."
Tifa stopped dead in her tracks and laughed at him. "What? You’re not mad that they aren’t coming back?"
"We got the whole thing to ourselves, Tiff. The whole, fuckin’ thing." Cid was already thinking about what he could get away with in an abandoned airship.
She just cocked an eyebrow. Cid obviously had things in mind and the truth of it was, Tifa was onboard with whatever it was.
