Six months had passed since Serah had left this earth. Leaving a massive hole in both Snow and Noel’s heart and, while they both deeply cared for her which was ultimately what helped create such a strong bond between them, they tried not to talk about her.
Noel had arrived in New Bodhum at the request of Hope to help pull Snow back to their current reality. The growing Chaos that was unleashed after Caius tricked Noel into killing him was only growing stronger. He knew that treating Snow like a broken doll wasn’t going to be beneficial for anyone so he did the only thing he knew how to do. He socked him in the gut and told him to pull his head out of his ass and help protect the world he nearly gave his life for so many times before. The world Serah gave her life to protect. The world Lightning gave her life to protect.
Hearing their names roll off Noel’s tongue so care free infuriated Snow but, as predicted, it worked. He was out of bed and ready to fight the world.
Their first objective was to protect the people of New Bodhum but, as they looked around, they began to realize that the chaos was too strong. They had to evacuate everyone before it was too late.
For days, Noel and Snow plotted out possible routes to more secure locations but nothing was going to work. Not really.
So, Snow went to the only person he knew might be able to help them. Hope. He traveled to Academia and presented him with their situation. For some reason the amount of Chaos engulfing his home was just too powerful.
“I don’t know what else to do, Hope. We have already lost at least a dozen people to the chaos infused beasts. We need your help….please.” Snow pleaded with Hope as he pulled up a chair and sat next to him. Quickly realizing that Hope had already had a plan in mind but it wasn’t going to be easy. The steps were sprawled out in front of them on his desk.
“I know. They need to come here. All of them.” He said as he pointed to his final plan. “We need to open a portal long enough for everyone to get through safely. After that…” He rubbed his temples and sighed, “We will take it step by step but I created a small area on the edge of town for the refugees.” He pointed to the spot on the map, just off the main street. “Here.”
“Okay. This…this can work.” Snow replied with excitement. “We can do this!” He threw his fist in the air and stood up, waiting for Hope’s next instruction.
“Snow, it’s not going to be easy. This portal is going to be huge. It’s going to take a lot of every from everyone involved just to keep it open. You and Noel have adapted to such forms of travel. They haven’t.” Hope stood and walked to the large window wall that revealed the sleepy streets of the city he built so long ago.
They stood in silence. Side by side. Snow refused to feel defeated again. He was going to figure out how to do this and fast.
He returned back to New Bodhum to prepare his village and explain the severity of their situation to those who refused to accept it.
Noel and Snow shared a silent look of worry and desperation before they were greeted by Hope
emerging from a glowing rift.
“You ready?” Hope asked as he aimed his recently created teleportation device to the nearest open location and tossed it to the ground. Anchoring the rift.
“As ready as I’ll ever be.” He said quietly as he climbed on the table that stood next to him, yelling for everyone to listen to him carefully. Noel soon joined his side. Along with Hope.
Gadot, Lebreau, Maqui and Yuj stood on the ground in front of them staring out into the sea of people threw grew to know as their family as they listened to their leaders.
“Children first.” Noel said confidently. “They’re smaller and they won’t take up as much of the energy force.” He noticed his tone was met with fear as parents held their children closer.
“What he means is,” Snow said as he rolled his eyes at the lack of compassion that flowed from Noel. “The children will be safe and there are people waiting on the other side to greet them and keep them safe until their parents pass through. People I have grown to trust as I would anyone here with my own kids. If I had any…” He allowed a cocky sideways grin escape him, lightening the mood. “We need to hurry, though.”
Parents soon gave their children hugs and kisses and sent them on their way. One by one they
disappeared into the rift. The final child approached and was filled with excitement which made
everyone smile.
The girl was everything they once were. Filled with hope and adventure. Her bright purple and blue eyes twinkled at the view of the golden rift before her. Her platinum blonde hair with light pink highlights gently moved as the wind blew threw it. She was clinging to her plastic toy sword,
ready to take on the unknown world she was about to enter.
“Now, Mr. Snow?” She asked as her giant innocent eyes locked with his. Warmth filled him as he
watched her little legs dance in preparation.
“What’s your name, beautiful?” He asked as he got down on his knee to be at eye level with her. Passing her a gentle smile.
“Amaya.” She answered while flashing a toothless grin at Snow. A grin that tugged at his heart in a way he never felt before. Seeing her confidence only made him fill with pride knowing their plan would work.
“Are you ready?” He asked as he tucked her wild hair behind her ears.
“I’m ready!” She cried out as she ran toward the rift without a fear in the world. Whatever was beyond that point, she was ready for it. He laughed as he watched her disappear into the portal. Standing up and waiting for Hope to signal the next round.
“Okay, this is where things are going to get more complicated. The rift will now have to feed off of our energy to stay open long enough for everyone to enter.” He said as he pointed to his core group as they positioned themselves for the next step. “You have to move quickly but also carefully. Enter the portal as calmly as you can and just follow the trail. Do not wander from it.” His voice became serious and stern. “If you choose to wander, nobody can save you. We cannot come after you so stay focused.” He demanded. Completing the circle with his friends, they joined hands. The magic that formed was bright and colorful and, obviously, powerful.
“Okay, ladies. You’re next.” He called out, keeping his eyes closed as he felt the power within him joining the spell.
Only moments passed but he could feel their power weakening. He opened his eyes to assess their situation and noticed they were down to maybe twenty more people. Lebreau and Gadot were clinging tightly to each other as if it was the only thing keeping alive. Maqui and Yuj were beginning to lose the color in their faces while Noel and Hope seemed to also be fading. He knew he was also losing his strength but he had to keep it together.
“Last…round. Go.” He called out as he watched the rest of the village enter the portal when suddenly a rumble shook the ground below them. Causing the rift to flicker like a dying light bulb. “Shit…” He whispered to himself as to avoid worrying his friends.
“Snow…we gotta go.” Noel alerted him as the looked behind him. His eyes filling with fear. A giant cloud of chaos was approaching them. They could hear beasts roaring within. “NOW!” He demanded.
“Okay, You four. Go now. Do not let go of each other. Do not look back. Just run! ” He orderd to Gadot, Lebreau, Maqui and Yuj.
They nodded in agreement and grabbed each other’s hands and ran as fast as they could to the portal. Snow watched carefully as he made sure they got to it safely. “Now, Hope. You need to go. If all else fails, they will need you to help them adjust.”
Hope didn’t want to leave his friends behind and protested for a moment before he felt Snow lift him and throw him into the rift. All he heard was Snow’s voice telling him to protect his family.
“Snow, I can handle holding this open. You’re getting too weak. You need to go.” Noel ordered as he focused his magic on the fading opening.
“No. That’s not how this works.” Snow said confidently. “We can both go. Together.” He smiled as he reached out his hand for Noel’s. “Let’s go.”
Noel could hear the hesitation in his voice but followed his lead. The approached the portal and, in that last moment as the chaos finally arrived, Noel looked behind him to see the portal closing. Leaving Snow behind to fight off the beasts. Alone. He ran toward it but it closed on him. “SNOW!” He cried. “Damn it!” He tried to conjure up his last bit of magic to reopen it but failed. He shook his head and ran toward the light that would lead him to Academia.
As he leaped through, he felt his feet hitting the concrete and saw the villagers standing there. Staring at him in silence as they realized Snow didn’t follow. Noel was filled with sadness and fear.
“Hope, we have to reopen it. We have to get Snow!” He demanded.
“Noel…none of us have the energy right now. It took everything we had just to keep it open this long.” He replied with a whispered tone. He was ashamed to admit it. Even to himself.
“It’s Snow!” He stomped angrily as he threw his weapon to the ground.
“Snow is strong. We will find a way to save him, I promise.” Hope said as he slowly walked to Noel. “Right now, we need to do what we all promised him we would. We need to help them.” He said as he pointed to the group of misplaced citizens.
Noel sighed in defeat but knew Hope was right. He quickly refocused his energy on directing people to their new homes while others began handing out maps and locations for supplies and other shops they may need.
The people of Academia welcomed their new friends with open arms. Sazh among them. He and Dajh began to setup games for the kids to play as the adults found time to relax and gather their thoughts.
Noel and Hope stood together. Staring at the people they just saved but they felt like they failed. Snow was left behind and Noel couldn’t help but feel guilty. Like it was his fault. It wasn’t and, deep down, he knew that but he wasn’t going to stop looking for a way to save him. Surprising to even him, Snow had become his best friend. He was done losing his friends.
