It was raining. Again. It always seemed to rain on days that he liked to go out. But the rain reflected his mood.
The rain clouds cast a dark, greyish aura over everything, settling a rather depressing mood over the Balamb Garden and its inhabitants.
Irvine especially.
The mock cowboy had just broken up with his girlfriend that day. Or rather, she had broken up with him.
Irvine Kinneas, famed sharpshooter, had taken his girlfriend out to the Macaroni Grill for dinner to celebrate their anniversary. Selphie Tilmitt, Irvine's girlfriend, had gone along, had eaten dinner with him, and had acted as if nothing was amiss.
When the waitress took away the empty dessert plate, Selphie broke it to the other SEED.
"Irvy, honey... there's something I need to tell you."
"Anything, baby, just tell me." The man had leaned his elbows on the table, watching her. It thenthen that he noticed the slight, sudden change in her demeanor. It was as if she'd suddenly grown uncomfortable. ""What's wrong, baby?"
"Irvy... I... this isn't working out for us. Because... you see... I... I don't like guys in this way. I like women."
It wasn't really the fact that she had leeched his money out of him before breaking up. It wasn't the fact that she made him feel like this was going to last forever before she shattered those dreams. It was the fact that they had slept together, they had been inseparable, they had been voted cutest couple of the Garden, and suddenly she decided that she was a lesbian. He had been silent as she stood, as she took her purse and walked out.
That had been a few hours ago.
Irvine had returned to Garden sullenly, wandering around the grounds in a cold, numb, unaware state. He was oblivious to the pair of sea green eyes that watched him from the shadows, eyes that were careful to note every single movement the cowboy made.
It was dark. Last time Irvine had glanced at a clock, it had been 12:30. He should have been in bed. He had a class to teach the next morning.
All of these things went unnoticed by him.
It had been a habit of his to get depressed over some of the smallest things.
Like being dumped by his girlfriend of a year and a half for another woman.
Of course, maybe that would send any man into a sort of depression.
Irvine sighed, plopping down on a soaked bench, bowing his head forward. He ignored the waterfall of rain that slid off the brim of his hat in a torrent, splashing into his lap with a soft, wet splurch.
"Maybe I'm just destined for this. Retribution for my idiocy of using others." He shivered as a wave of coldness overcame him. "You'd think that she'd have known earlier, though. And maybe she could have told me sooner."
Irvine pulled out a small box from his pocket, flipping it open with one quivering hand and staring at the piece of jewelry inside.
It was a small ring of white gold with leaves and flowers etched into the band. Placed in the center was a glittering stone of emerald, reflecting the lights in its faceted design.
The brunette sighed heavily, shutting the box. He had planned on proposing to the girl after dinner, had planned on making sure their relationship lasted forever.
"Guess my luck's run out, huh Matron?" He leaned his head back, staring up at the cloudy night sky, blinking as the rain droplets pelted him gently with wet kisses. "Wonder what Selph's doing now. I hope she's at least happy with whatever happens."<
