Chapter 1: The Great Ninja Yuffie
Yuffie scanned the heavily foliaged forest carefully. Many unsuspecting travelers wondered confusedly through the large body of forest that she dominated for the time being. Situated perfectly between the high, mahogany ridges of Mount Condor and the highly military facilitated Junon Harbor, her forest was the fastest route between the two plots of civilization. Not only did it provide sufficient cover for her lowly profession but also contained several twists, turns, and high and low hills and ravines that would bewilder any outsiders for weeks. Powerful monsters of all shapes and sizes dwelled in the deceptive foliage, only ensuring the most exquisite forms of materia for anyone to dare face the animosities the forest held.
Yuffie was dutifully gathering dry bark and kindling for the cold night she knew that would come when she heard it…silence. A great hush befell the entire forest in seconds, leaving the muted groaning of trees as the only sign of life. Her dark burgundy brows knitted in slight confusion, ‘What could possibly be powerful enough to have monsters fear them?’ she contemplated as she abandoned her mundane duties and fled silently to one of her many lookout points. The forest covering nearly thirty acres of land made locating potential victims close to impossible but was compensated by the numerous “inhabitants” and her roughly sketched “lookout points”. The inhabitants assaulted anything that threatened their territory and because of the landscape, sound could travel quite audibly through the forest. Her rough-sketched “lookout points” made up were the bloodthirsty monster may have failed. These were hidden clearing randomly dispersed throughout the forested landscape that allowed her to view a large section of the forest at once. Because of the irregular and varied patterns the land had as a whole, several points were established to view her surroundings thoroughly. While she raced towards the closest point, a female voice roared in the bright clear sky, “Bolt 2!” followed by the fierce shriek of crackling lightning.
“Everyone stay close together!” Cloud bellowed, bringing down a Capparwire with a might swing. He continued his brutal onslaught as he commanded his small group of fighters while the battle persisted, “Red and Tifa, alternate between attacking and healing! Barret, you handle the back while I’ll take down the front!” whipping his head in the direction of the flower girl, “Aeris, you get everything else in between!” and was rewarded with a quick nod of agreement. “Sled Fang!” the crimson cat beast growled, tearing through a group of monsters with claws and teeth. “Blade Beam!” the spiked blonde followed, drastically reducing the enemy’s numbers. Within minutes, the battle ground was filled with the carcasses of lifeless monsters that were defeated by the traveling assembly. “Is that all of them?” Aeris inquired as she readily distributed cure spells among the injured party. Red XIII focused his sensitive ears to that around him, “No, none have survived,” scouting the area. “We wouldn’ be in dis mess if Spike didn’ get us lost,” Barret retorted, crossing his arms in slight irritation. Tifa smiled, “Don’t mind Barret. He’s just mad that we picked you as leader,” she patted the ex-Soldier’s shoulder encouragingly. Barret snorted at her comment, looking far more annoyed than Tifa anticipated.
Yuffie observed the estranged group, thoroughly scrutinizing each member. The first candidate, a strange type of feline that talked, presented the biggest problem in acquiring the precious materia. He would warn the group of her presence before she could get even three feet of them. The second, a young woman wielding a staff, followed behind the crimson beast. The only threat she portrayed to her was the attack magic she possessed and, from the battle, her easy proficiency of its use. Clearly she, no doubt, held the largest portion of materia which only meant that the rest held what was left. Beside the pink magic user, the spiked blonde proved himself to be a deadly adversary. Wielding a large sword equal to his height, the swordsman would be difficult to outmaneuver if he sensed her while at close range. Another minor annoyance of the leader was his ability to attack both long and short range on a whim which was only possible through materia. The same applied for the other female with chocolate brown hair and matching eyes who was a martial arts master, being a close range fighter as well. That left the giant of a dark man possessing a gun arm. Although he was a highly qualified long-ranged fighter, his immense size made him slow, especially at close range. With that knowledge in mind, she quickly concocted a foolproof strategy as she tainted a throwing knife with a strong tranquilizer. Aiming carefully, she threw the tainted weapon with timed precision, hitting the fiery cat in its frontal left leg. Red momentarily staggered in his slow amble, growling weakly before he slipped into unconsciousness. This alerted everyone almost immediately, Tifa and Barret crowding the fierce beast while Aeris and Cloud gazed about for the direction of the attack. “It was a tranquilizer,” Tifa reported as relief filled her. “What da hell do ya want?” Barret snapped impatiently. “We mean you no harm,” Aeris countered, searching for movement. “Silence!” the shin obi yelled, activating a stolen seal materia. Aeris instantly lost her ability of speech which caused Cloud to search fiercely, their most prized magic user out of commission temporarily. “Aeris, guard Red. Barret and Tifa, help me with the new threat,” to which they came quickly to his side. Without warning, smoke bombs seemed to be exploding everywhere, effectively confusing the foreign group and engulfing them in a plentiful cloud of smoke. The young ninja sprung into action immediately heading straight for the mute flower girl. She snatched her materia bag just as she narrowly missed a gloved fist aiming her face. Yuffie thought hurriedly, ‘Dammit! They knew I was going after the pink girl! Gotta do this quick!’ as she dodged a low angle slash from Cloud. This game of sorts continued until the shin obi’s fog of illusion completely dissipated. During the course of her failed escape attempts and their unsuccessful efforts to stop the ninja, Yuffie found herself surrounded by the wayward group. The ninja narrowed her stormy grey eyes, ‘Great, either through a masterful strategic plan or sheer dumb luck, they manage to surround me. This complicates things a lot,’ eying one fighter to the next. “What da…it’s a girl?” Barret mumbled confusedly, briefing dropping his guard. Yuffie focused her line of vision on the dark man, “What? Don’t think a GIRL is capable of this?” clutching the stolen goods. Still in fighting stance, Cloud remarked, “Give up, you’re completely surrounded. The silence spell has worn off and Red has awakened,” he briefly eyed the crimson beast, “return what you have stolen.” Aeris came up beside the leader, “Wait, Cloud, let me speak to her,” walking to the tense ninja, “Don’t worry, we come in peace. You are meant for great things, some of which you are aware of, others not so easily. Come with us to help find the path you wish to follow,” extended a welcoming hand. Yuffie could only blink in bewilderment as she lowered her guard as well and took the offered hand. The shin obi was so wrapped up in the infinite calmness she found in the strange woman that she didn’t register the dark gunman until he hit her in the head, effectively knocking her unconscious.
“Barret, that type of conduct was completely unnecessary!” Aeris barked angrily. “I’m sorry, Aeris, but she look like da type that backstabs ya,” The gunman countered sincerely. Red gazed upon the motionless ninja, “She may be thief but a killer she is not; she used a tranquilizer instead of poison or far worse,” he retorted. “What? Ya too, Red? Why do I jis always seem ta be da bad guy?” Barret grumbled. Tifa sighed heavily, “But she seems so young…I wonder why she’s out here alone?”
Seemingly almost purposefully, Aeris changed the subject, "I'm going to go check up on her. We might as well camp here, too." Cloud nodded in agreement, “I agree. It's getting far too dark to continue travel. Barret will you help me set up camp?" the blonde inquired. "Sure, Spike, that'll be no problem but what 'bout da girl?" the dark man suggested, uneasy with their "guest". "We'll think of something..." Cloud began but was cut off by an effective yell from the person in question.
"WHERE IS HE!" the shinobi growled in a quickened pace followed by a concerned Aeris. Stopping dead in front of the gunman, she roared, "What the hell's your problem?!" sneering angrily, rubbing her head in memory of the attack. Barret huffed, "Whatcha gettin' all bent outta shape for? I bopped ya 'cause ya tried ta rob us, BRAT!" using his obvious size and height difference in an attempt to intimidate her, "'sides, whatcha gonna do? Put me ta sleep?" he sneered mockingly.
"Ummm...Barret...I think it would be in your best interest if..." Aeris remarked but was interrupted by a completely pissed-off Yuffie. "TAKE THIS!" the ninja bellowed, delivering a swift and powerful haymaker. Moving too quick for the gunman to react, her attack found its mark, right behind the back of his broad head with impressive force. Barret fell over, eyes rolling back as his hulking body collapsed weightlessly to the hard ground.
Yuffie smirked, "Serves you right, you big ugly black ape! Maybe in a few MONTHS you can think straight! Did the thought ever occur to you that I am WELL capable of defending myself?" she rubbed her head irritably, "think of it as payback!"
She looked up as she realized the watchful eyes of the rest gazed at her intensely. Still massaging her temple cautiously, Yuffie's eyes rested on the bright blue Mako eyes of the leader, "What are you going to do about me?" her intense gaze shifted to each member in a slow session. Cloud stood from his squatting position and remarked, "That is to be decided by the group as a whole. We're on a dangerous mission to stop Sephiroth and we'll accept any help we can," blankly at the ground as he recalled the destruction of Nibelheim. Noticing his wayward gaze, the shinobi inquired hesitantly, "This Sephiroth...took something from you? All of you?" The fighter nodded, "Some of us joined for revenge, others to save the Planet even though the odds of succeeding are greatly against us," she paused, "but we will at least give our all," casting a glance to the solemn ex-SOLDIER. Yuffie's stormy gaze rested on the Cetra's intense emerald, "You can help me find the path I wish to follow?" pausing momentarily, "I don't understand what you mean but I trust your words. I will join you on this quest to find the answers I'm searching for and to aid you." Red XIII perked up, rising from his hunched perch, "You wish to join? We are unaware of who you are. What shall you be called?" shuffling to the shinobi's side. Planting both hands on her hips, she smirked, "The Great Ninja Yuffie Kisaragi at your service!"
Aeris beamed warmly, "Welcome aboard, Yuffie."
