Prologue
Cloud
sighed staring down at the seemingly glowing flowers. Even without Aerith
around to care for them they thrived in the abandoned church that she, and at
one point he, called home. He was different now, no longer allowing himself to
constantly wallow in self-pity. Well, it was partly true, anyway. He still had
moments of almost crushing regret, but a vampire placing a gun to the back of
your head did wonders for one’s attitude. Constant companionship and occasional
affection from the man didn’t hurt either.
This
morning however was different. He would allow himself a few minutes of
recollection before beginning the wearing task of seeing his friends. He
enjoyed their presence, but it easily overwhelmed him, and today would call for
even more attention than usual. It was his birthday, not that he cared, but his
friends made sure he would celebrate accordingly.
A soft warm
presence flooded his mind, “Happy
birthday, Cloud.”
A smile
tugged at his lips. “Thank you, Aerith.” His eyes lifted to see the vision in
pink, “How are you?”
“I should be asking you that, Cloud.
You seem preoccupied at the moment.”
Cloud
shrugged. “Just thinking, that’s all.”
“About…”
“The past I
guess”
“Yes, the past is so clear and yet
the future is full of uncertainties. Unfortunately, there is more that you will
have to bear.” Aerith
murmured with a frown.
“What do
you mean?”
“Cloud, we have a favor to ask of
you,” Aerith spoke
with all sincerity, “It’s about
Sephiroth.”
Cloud’s
eyes widened in shock, he felt as if he’d just been kicked in the stomach and
dropped to his knees. “Sephiroth?” he croaked.
Aerith
nodded solemnly. “The planet seems to
think he deserves another chance to---“
“To do
what?! DESTROY it!” Cloud yelled, jumping back to his feet in a fit of rage.
“No Cloud,” Aerith replied calmly. “Not to destroy it. Sephiroth never really
had a chance at having his own life. He was simply a puppet; first for ShinRa,
and then for Jenova.”
“But Jenova
will just take control again!” he growled.
“Cloud, Jenova is gone. Her neck was
used by Kadaj, you know that. There is no Jenova left to drive Sephiroth to
madness.”
“It seems
the planet has done a fine job of figuring this out without my help. What the
hell does it need me for?”
“You are the only one capable of
defeating Sephiroth. You’re the only one that could stop him if something went
wrong.”
“I thought
you said Jenova was dead.”
“She is, but that doesn’t mean that
something else won’t happen.”
“Like
what?”
“We don’t know, Cloud.”
“So I’m
waiting for him to go insane so I can kill him again? Forget it! I’m tired of
it already! Every time he comes back I remember the way things were. I’m
finally moving past that, and now it’s just going to start all over again?”
Cloud choked, feeling grief grip his heart.
“Cloud, I’m not saying that he will
go insane, I’m just saying it’s a possibility. He should come back perfectly
sane, but even if he does, who would believe he wasn’t a threat? Cloud you’re
the only one that would give him a chance.” Aerith smiled sadly, “You loved him once, didn’t you?”
“Yes and
that’s the problem!”
“Cloud, I’m sorry you aren’t being
given any options, but this is what the planet wants. If you care about him, or
me, please give him one last chance at the life he never knew.”
“When?”
Seeing Aerith’s confused stare he clarified, “When is he returning?”
“You’ll know soon enough.” Aerith spoke cryptically before
disappearing once again.
“Wait! Aerith!” It was no use he realized. She wouldn’t return just
because he was confused. The planet never made things easy. Perhaps, that was
its way of letting people know their place and that they weren’t all powerful.
“Cloud,
it’s time to go." Cloud jumped at the voice turning to see Vincent at the
entrance of the church. "Tifa is becoming impatient.”
Cloud
shivered a little, but walked to Vincent’s side. He felt only slight relief as
his dark haired lover placed an arm around his waist, guiding him out of the
church and away from the unease of the conversation that had taken place there.
A/N: Love it? Hate it? Let me know! No flames
though please... I know it's short, but if I get enough reviews of people
wanting more, I promise to update soon! ^__^
