Prologue

Blonde hair poked slowly out from under standard issue blankets as its owner neared consciousness. Moments later, blankets were thrown aside as the blonde sat up rather suddenly, smacking his head on the upper bunk as he did so.

“Goddamnit!” the teen exclaimed, rubbing the top of his head.

Red luminescent letters on his bedside table read 6:45. He leapt out of bed and cursed his luck: he had woken up nearly a half an hour late…again. Frowning, he realized that he only had fifteen minutes to get to his morning training session.

As the teen dressed hurriedly, he wondered why a special training session was called. Rumor had it that the great General was to be teaching them, something that his roommate Zack, a first-class SOLDIER, had not denied. The older man smiled and answered evasively whenever his younger roommate asked. Thinking about the General caused the blonde’s pulse to pick up immediately. The silver-haired General Sephiroth never failed to make his pulse race. In fact, many SOLDIERS and cadets alike lusted after Sephiroth.

Jerking himself back to reality, the teen ruffled his spikes and sprinted out into the hallway. As he ran, he checked his watch and groaned; he now had five minutes to run halfway across the military compound, which was rather large.

The preoccupied boy did not notice a tall man walking ahead of him, that is, until it was too late. He slammed straight into the man’s back and staggered backwards. The teen prepared to keep running when the taller man turned and glared menacingly at him. Only then did the blonde see flowing, knee-length silver hair enveloping the leather clad General.

“Watch it, cadet,” he snarled.

The blonde stammered apologies and diverted his eyes.

“Enough!” Sephiroth growled, leaning in to get a good look at the cadet. “Look at me.”

Fearfully, the young cadet looking into the General’s glowing emerald eyes.

“What’s your name, cadet?”

“Strife, sir,” the boy answered quickly. “Cloud Strife.”

Sephiroth leaned in closer and was centimeters away from Cloud’s face. Cloud held his breath, hoping the General would not notice what their close proximity was doing to him.

“Well, cadet Strife,” Sephiroth breathed, looking sultry, “you’d better get to class. You have precisely one minute and thirty-seven seconds to get there, after all.”

Cloud swore lightly and jumped away from Sephiroth. Saluting quickly, he prepared to sprint again. Sephiroth, grinning, straightened casually and conveniently stretched out his leg very slightly, tipping up his leather clad toes. Cloud, having not noticed this act, ran and tripped over the General’s outstretched leg.

As the cadet tumbled to the ground, Sephiroth let out a small chuckle, quickly covering his mouth to stifle it. Eyes sparkling with suppressed mirth, he glanced down at Cloud and shook his head.

“Late, as always.”
