He never slows while walking by my cell.
I’ve only been here two weeks, so perhaps he’s too busy with the others to pay any attention to me yet. Is it wrong for me to hope he kills them?
I watched him take a clipboard, check a paper on it, then bark an order at one of the men in white that follow him everywhere. The man opened the cell perpendicular to mine and dragged out Simmons, the leader of that band of thugs. I watched in fascination as the scientist took a cursory glance at Simmons’ arms and face, and then motioned for the orderly to throw him back in the cell. His arched eyebrows met under his round, wire-frame glasses as he frowned and scratched on the clipboard with a pencil.
“Cutting back on his dose,” he mutters.
What he does to the people in this lab would probably scare me to death. I again wonder what he has in store for me. If I could say something I’d tell him I wasn’t part of Simmons’ little group, that I’d actually been a prisoner. But, my larynx is still healing. I got a terrible feeling it wouldn’t matter to him anyway, though. I don’t think he’s targeted wastrels for his experiments as much as he just happened to get them this time around.
He turned and our eyes met through the glass. I shiver. I’ve never seen eyes so dark. It isn’t just that they’re black, either; it’s that they’re devoid of emotion.
He’s not an ugly man. His slick, black hair he keeps in a ponytail, but strands of it fall free on his forehead. Slender in frame but broad in the shoulders, he boasts long arms and legs. His skin is perfect and pale. He has high cheekbones and a straight nose. His bottom lip is full and curvy and his top lip is thinner.
But those eyes…
Slowly, he approached my cell. I force myself not to back away, to stand my ground. The orderly darted forward, anticipating an order to haul me out.
“No,” the scientist said, displeasure in his voice. “Do not jerk the female out.” He threw a switch and my door opened.
I backed away to show I would not attempt to run, my arms up and hands spread.
“Stay here,” he told the overeager orderly. “Call Jean on your com-link and tell him to bring four more blankets to this cell.”
“Yes, Professor Hojo,” the man replied, bringing his wristwatch up to his face and talking into it.
Professor Hojo.
I wonder if I look as pale as I imagine. I know that name. He’s all over the news at least once a year. He’s Shin-Ra’s resident mad scientist.
Suddenly, he’s in the cell with me and the door is shutting. I stood perfectly still, legs urging me to run. But, I’m smart enough to realize there’s nowhere for me to go. I remain rooted to the spot.
“All these others make a terrible fuss,” he commented, taking a page from the back of his clipboard and moving it to the front. The pencil went behind his ear, tucked away by a slim and long-fingered hand. “You, my dear, haven’t made a fuss at all.” His black eyes moved over my arms. “You can relax,” he said in a wry tone. “I see your clear message of non-aggression.”
Slowly, I lowered my hands. I saw splotches of red on his coat. I am so cold…
“I like your display of intelligence,” he adds, tilting his head. “You would prove the sensible one, being female.” He motions to my twin size bed. “Have a seat.”
I obey him. He takes his pencil and starts writing on the paper. “You don’t know why you’re here?”
I nodded. I had no idea why I was here. He hadn’t stuck me, examined me, or even alluded to my existence before now.
“You’re here because you’re a witness to what these men have been up to for the last two weeks.” Professor Hojo glanced up at me, his dark, dark eyes taking in my shivers. He walked to the wall and pushed his thumb into a red light. “Jean,” he says in a less than patient voice. “Now, not tomorrow.”
“Sorry, sir,” a voice says in obvious fear. “I’ve misplaced the boxes and-.”
“I don’t want excuses. Bring blankets up to cell 35 in the next three minutes or you’ll rue it.” He released the thumb scanner and turned back to me. “As I was saying, my dear,” he continued, voice calm, “you’re a witness. I picked you up because that wouldn’t help you, not with your captors working for Shin-Ra.”
I felt very confused. If I was a liability, why not kill me and get it over with?
“I see your puzzlement,” the professor said, almost but not quite seeming to smile. “The thing is, I’m hoping you’ll fill a deficit in my department.”
I blink.
He seemed to consider me. “You can write?”
I nod.
He handed me the clipboard and the pencil, careful not to touch me in any way. “Write your name at the top left of the page,” he instructed.
I obediently write it and wait, pencil poised. I’m so tense now. I wish I could scream.
“Write the following sentence,” he instructs. “Rufus Shin-Ra is an unimaginative, spoiled brat and I hope he falls into a vat of hydrochloric acid.”
I write it, feeling surreal.
“Now,” Professor Hojo said, “I want you to diagram that sentence.”
I hesitate. I haven’t diagramed a sentence since the fifth grade. Still, I easily recalled the limit of what I’d been taught. I drew my first line and sectioned it off. This was a compound sentence, to begin with, so I felt more confident. I could divide it up fairly easily.
It took me about two minutes. I had to erase twice.
He took my work and looked at it. He snatched his pencil and wrote before giving it back. I looked to see if he’d corrected it. The diagram he’d left alone. I now had an algebraic equation staring at me.
Again I applied myself to a problem. Math came easily to me. I finished it and returned the clipboard.
Professor Hojo nodded. “Congratulations,” he said. “You’ve beaten out any of the dolts Mr. Shinra sent.”
I got up and approached him. Maybe I was less intelligent than he imagined, because I had no idea what he was on about. I reached out for the clipboard slowly, asking him for it by showing my intent. He gave it to me, and the pencil.
What do you want me to do? I wrote.
“Legible handwriting too,” he said absently, ignoring my question. “What is your occupation, Miss Grey?”
I’m a marriage counselor.
He snorted. “Really? How many years?”
Twelve.
“And how old are you?”
Thirty-one.
“Any family?”
Again I hesitated. Did an estranged father count? I decided to be honest. I have a father, but he doesn’t claim me, I wrote.
Professor Hojo looked at me. His gaze seemed to go all the way to my soul. “Is anyone going to miss you besides your clients?”
I swallowed hard. I really, really should answer to the affirmative. I shook my head. No, I wrote.
He checked his watch. Abruptly, he pivoted on his heel and returned to the thumb scanner/intercom. “Jean,” he said, his voice cold. “You’ve had seven minutes now.”
“Sir, I’m trying!” the desperate voice answered.
“Blankets should never be so difficult to find,” Hojo answered. “Put Carson on the project and report to me in my office in twenty minutes.”
“Sir,” Jean said, but Hojo cut him off.
“Now, my dear,” Hojo said, returning to me. He ran his eyes over my body in a clinical way. “You’ll need another few days to gain adequate strength,” he mused softly. His eyes came back to mine suddenly. “I need an educable person to train as my assistant, and Mr. Shinra is not forthcoming with any useful candidates. If you agree to fill the position, I will make certain you are fed, clothed, and protected.” He gave a very small, chilling smile. “If you do not agree, I’m afraid you’ll stay in your current position, which is cell-dweller and eventual lab rat.”
I felt sick. My palms sweated. I wiped them on my flimsy gown.
“It isn’t a difficult choice,” he prompted. “Gain a position with benefits or leave your future to my mercy.”
As far as I considered it, either choice left me at his mercy. But, I would probably be safer if I took his offer. Slowly, I nodded to him.
“I take that as your affirmative,” he said. “Good. There’s no need for you to inhabit this cell any longer.” As he spoke he reached into his pocket and pulled out a hoop of shiny metal. “Lean your head back slightly.”
I felt the cold metal encompass my neck. It clicked.
“This is to ensure they let me keep you,” he said. “It’s a remote governor. Should I give you an order it will make sure you comply with it. I suggest you react faster than it does, which is five seconds.” He stepped farther away from me. “You must earn my trust, Miss Grey.”
I nodded.
Hojo’s black gaze flicked to the side. A moment later I heard the cell door open. A gangly man in scrubs came in, arms full of blankets.
“Don’t put them down,” he ordered. “Follow us to my office.” He held out his arm to me. “Come with me, Miss Grey.”
