Squall met up with Selphie in the Garden cafeteria. As promised, he arrived as early as he could which left him able to snag two hot dogs for each of them. He grabbed a bag of ranch potato chips and a banana to go along side of his. Nothing else was added to Selphie's tray, she could get it once she arrived. His friend spotted him and waved; she mimes a question of wonder if he got her anything. She then stood on her toes to see what was on the tray; her feet hit the floor then she stood in line to grab sides.
Selphie sat down with a peach and a bag of pretzels. She then yanked a can of peach nectar from her bag. "Got it before I left town." She exclaimed proudly. "I got one for you too, want it?" It seemed Squall had no choice as a can of apricot was given to him beside his lemonade. "Kait was asleep. Imari looked like he wanted to join him, unwillingly." She snickered.
Squall was happy to hear that. He hoped his son was a Hellraiser today. He doubted it though. The kid is kind on default. He'd struggle not to cry if he thought he hurt someone's feelings. But at least he was crashingly energetic.
"Has he had any breakthrough as himself?" Selphie wondered out loud. "I only talked to him a little bit. He said he was gonna do some carvings."
"Not that I know of.. I thought I saw him last night but.. I don't know."
"Maybe he should spend some time around Matron, he loved her so much. Maybe even go back to the orphanage!" She set down her hot dog after taking a bite; placing her hand before her mouth, she says. "Maybe the memory that was still so strong for him will jog into effect and bring Irvine back."
"Maybe..." He quieted then, thoughtfully eating his lunch.
Selphie quieted as well. Eating her lunch, she then began softly humming a song. "Squall... What if he doesn't recover himself?" She wondered. "Could you love Imari Karver?"
Squall wondered about that, but his wonder was in the opposite direction. Could Imari love him? Would he stay with him, or return to his life in Winhill?
At the Leonhart residence. Imari Karver is in the tiny kitchen carving a hunk of wood into a dragon. However focused the task is, he can't really concentrate. So, to prevent ruining the piece of wood he's crafting with, he stilled his movements and just stared. The ghostly whisper in his mind would not cease nagging him. It kept begging. Say my name. Say my name. What name? He's got two, and been called both. So then which?
"Irvine Kinneas." He stated out loud. Nothing. No shift in the Matrix. No clap of Godlike thunder or lightning. Nothing. "Imari Karver." The name was again met with nothing. A bird didn't even fly into the window pane as an omen. So what is the significance? Maybe, someone else has to say it?
He heard the front door open from the living room. Checking the time, he was surprised to see how late it is. Looking at his work, he sighed. A simple task isn't even a quarter done thanks to distraction.
"Imari?" Squall called out to him.
"In here." He looked over his shoulder before turning in his seat when Squall doesn't simply pass by but stopped to talk.
"Kait's still asleep?"
"Yeah, but he could be faking it because he's had his fill of me." He smiled to show he was joking.
"Can we talk? Are you busy?" He asked when noticing the tools on the counter top.
"Yeah, this is going nowhere."
"Crafter's block?" He entered the kitchen and took a seat.
"I wish. Massive brain fog brought on by distraction." After a second he says. "Can you do me a favor?" Pointing to himself, he asked. "Will you say my name?"
Confused, he complies. "Imari."
"Full."
"Imari Karver." He shrugged out his hand, not sure about the gag or whatever this was.
Imari looked as if he was expecting fireworks or a random clap of smoke. "Try Irvine."
"In full?" He does so when receiving a nod. "Irvine Kinneas... Irvine, Jay, Kinneas." Done with the mystery, he asked. "What is this?"
"I.. I don't know exactly either.. Just.. something's nagging at me." He shook his head. "Forget it. I need to focus on my work, not riddles."
Squall casts him a suspicious as well as concerned eye. But, dropping it, he stood and informed his house guest that he was going to change.
'Change.. It feels like something is trying to change.' Thought Karver.
Two weeks later.
"Hup-hup!" Kait raised his hand and bombed a sauce covered dough with sprinkle cheese.
Quistis was smiling, on the outside, inside she was assessing the mess damage pizza night at the Leonhart's was causing. She'd feel awful leaving it up to Squall and Irvine.
"Madame, my ingredients." He held out his hand, folding his fingers in and out asking that topping be placed inside.
Trepe handed the child a handful of crumbled sausage. "Kait, put it on careful..." her words fell to the countertop as Kait enthusiastically clapped his hands together. Whatever didn't land atop the uncooked pizza rolled about, some skydiving to the floor.
She sighed in exasperation. "Where are your fathers?" She muttered.
"Huh?" Kait cocked a brow, looking at his temporary sitter with question.
"Did I say something?"
"I thought you said fathers, my daddy is just one person." He dared her to tell him he was wrong. He can count all the way up to ten. And his dad doesn't have a twin brother.
"I meant... well, once Irvine gets his memories back."
"I don't get it." Dropping the subject, he held out his hand. "Peppers, please."
"Peppers? What does a kid like about peppers?"
"Daddy says Cowboy Irvine really liked them. So I tried it, and I liked it." He waves her close then whispered. "But only a little bit. Sometimes it's too tangy."
"I agree." She whispered back.
"We're home!" Announced Imari from the living room.
Squall appeared first; he set a bag down on the counter by the stove. "I couldn't find paper plates without that waxy finish; we ended up going to the Dollar Shop." He explained how a quick trip turned into twenty minutes.
"It's fine." Though her slanted glance pointed out the mess.
Squall eyed it, uninterested, it wasn't a huge mess. Besides, he's used to the help of a child being messy. He was glad for the company for dinner. Quistis was free and accepted the offer after her job at Garden ended for the day. He caught her walking into the garage about to choose a vehicle to go out someplace. Unlike himself he called on her, and wound up inviting her over when she told him she was going for dinner at the diner in town.
They were out of paper plates, and where they could eat on washable plates, it just didn't fit the vibe for dinner. So he and Imari left to the store. Leonhart has actually liked spending time with the man. And, secretly, he likes doing it so that at times when Irvine does appear, he can have those moments to himself. Just between them. Call him selfish. Possessive. But when Rinoa pulled him aside to give him and thumbs up and brief encounter with Irvine while they were hanging around at the park, he felt a nag of jealousy.
So, any time he can spend with the human Shumi he will take it. And in the past two weeks he's briefly seen Irvine twice. Once after Imari had showered, Irvine brushed his hair and asked: "why is my hair so flat?". The other time was a couple days later. Kait had a sleepover at the William's house with their twin sons, Dexter and Quinton.
It was one of the best encounters. He felt a smile ghost his lips, but completely possess his inner happiness over the memory.
It was a cool night despite the earlier heat. That's likely what had woken him from his sleep.
It was ridiculous... Squall knew this the moment he got out of his son's jungle blanket covered bed. He shouldn't be wandering down the hall to slip into his bedroom to join Imari Karver, not Irvine Kinneas, to sleep. Not again. Not after the first time that left nervous knots in his stomach. But he couldn't help it, dammit! His very alive, very gone for nearly four years, boyfriend was lying in his - should be their - bedroom. Not being there with him, wrapped in his arms was eating at him badly. Imari will just have to suck it up if he happens to wake up and notice him this time; it's not as if Squall intends to try anything with the man. It's just a nice comforting sleep. Honest!
The door opened soundlessly, closing just the same. The lovesick gunblader slipped across the room like wind would blow through a field, gentle and weightless. His weight is apparent when it dipped his large and steady bed, though only a bit, as he climbed into the covers and slid up into the slumbering man; and carefully he wrapped his arms around his boyfriend devoid body, resting his head onto his chest. Imari's heartbeat is steady and slow, making Squall smile, moreso, when the woodworker's hand came up into his hair as Irvine's often did; his thumb absently brushing the hairline behind his ear.
'I can't believe he seriously sleeps naked.' Squall took notice of the uncovered amount pressing into his own, which is regrettably covered in charcoal colored boxers. 'You're going to end up being such a pain to live with, aren't you?' Squall didn't mind so much for himself, but Imari should really consider the four year old that doesn't know the meaning of personal space to save his life. And where Kait may have the same thing going on downstairs, his is nowhere near the same. He doesn't want to end up answering a bunch of weird questions. Being uncomfortable is not Squall's thing. 'Crap.'
Imari nuzzled his face to Squall's; feeling something there his lips sought touch, which was found quickly. In a gasp, Squall parted his lips receiving a kiss from the unconscious amnesiac. Squall closed his momentarily widened shocked eyes as he melted into the feeling that he's missed for so many years. You can touch yourself until your hand comes off, but there is no way to simulate kissing; that wonderful burning feeling that you get when you're taking in someone's breaths and they your own; nor can you copy the sweet sense of connecting with someone you care for taking the pleasure of gratification beyond what self-love knows.
He hummed passionately feeling the slightest taste of tongue enter into his mouth. Squall couldn't say much for Imari's alert make-out skills, but asleep his mouth moves as skillfully as Irvine's.
"Squall." The faintest accent used in his name sent a chill throughout his entire body making him stiff as a rod beyond the cotton fabric; Imari's erection pressed readily into his thigh.
Squall's hold tightened around the Irvine's back as he rolled them over so that the amnesiac is resting on top of him; thighs parted and knees bent, Squall digs his heel into the mattress to get some force behind his raised hips grind. He released a shuddered sigh from the feeling of his love's weight dropped over him while Irvine continued to unconsciously kiss him all over his face from his mouth, chin, jaw, and cheeks; the gunblader's eyes roll up into the back of his head when his hips are met in the grind.
Imari's knees come up at his sides, which lifted Squall's legs to rest around his back as he tries to gain access to the lion's entrance. Not easy because Squall's boxers are still in the way.
Squall wondered how much he'd be understood if he asked the dreamer to wait? Or could he somehow try to work his bothersome clothing away. It's worth the risk. "Wait." He whispered just as quietly as Irvine had spoken his name.
The sleeping lover snickered, placing one last kiss against Squall's neck before moving aside. Squall has an old bottle of lubricant in his dresser drawer, blindly, he reached for it with one hand while the other hand worked his clothes off with help from precise shifts of his hips back and forth. Snatching the bottle it's almost instantly removed from his hand by Imari or Irvine or whomever is in there right now, and a healthy amount was squeezed into his palm - at least, he has to hope so once the sound of the cap being flipped up sounded. An arm is wrapped around his waist and he's rolled to his stomach; the tip of his love's bulge met his entrance. He messed with him a bit merely teasing access by rubbing the head up and down at the entrance. In a thrust he instantly slid quickly in, all the way to the base. Squall cried out in pleasure, his back bowed in ecstasy. He always felt that with Irvine little prep was involved, and even after all this time he still fit like a glove.
Is this is Imari or Irvine? He can't know for sure, but he does know that this feels real. This feels like Irvine; judging by the tenderness mixed with haste. Irvine always said resisting him was a nightmare, and he longed always for their time alone. A drawn out moan left both men when his love began moving in and out; their hands, though, front on back entwine with each other as weight and force are met wantonly.
Through soft moan Irvine whispered. "Squall."
Turning his head to look beside him, Leonhart kissed him on the cheek that's sort of exposed to him, due to Irvine's long hair resting just passed it. "Say it again." He pleaded, loving the way his name sounds in that accented tone. Squall missed that just as much as he'd missed this.
Complying, the sleeper whispered his love's name again. "Squall."
"Again." He groaned as the set pace is picked up. "Again!" He called out whenever answered; their fingers dug painfully into the gunblader's palms but he doesn't care, nothing can be felt over this: his rear being pounding, back being caressed by torso; the tip of his length painting streaks along the sheet is it's own appeal as it creates a pleasure up his loins and a sensual painting on the bedding back and forth. Squall could lose an arm and it wouldn't register knowledge of it until an hour after.
The bed is crying out with them, the wall painfully aware of it as there's sure to be a crack or even a hole somewhere along it. His name, Irvine's name, the wet slapping sounds of flesh against flesh rang out into the air ending with pillow muffled screams as the last pound found its way up the lion's tunnel before his boyfriend pulled out. Imari collapsed on top of Squall, breathless and giving pleasure to the receiving ability to hear.
That wouldn't due for the gunblader; shoving the man off he grabbed him by the arms shaking him. "Irvine, if you're still in there, wake up now!" He screamed into the unconscious young man's face; swallowing hard as his only response was gentle breathing, Squall felt tears and vomit creeping up on him. For a good forty minutes he had him; he had Irvine, he was back with him and loving him. But now...
Skkaarrr!
He jumped out of his skin hearing that damned bird of Imari's. He'd forgotten it was in the room, but the creepy thing about it was that it sounded as though... as though it had said his name. Surely he's losing it now or maybe it was his 'need for attention', as Seifer so crudely put it those few years back. Thankfully Irvine explained it a lot better, taking away that sore feeling that he's some kind of needy jackass. Looking at the dim paleness of his love beside him, Squall replaced his clothing not bothering with the clean up, he's far too exhausted to care, and far too angry. But he won't press the matter. Dr. Kadowaki made him promise himself, and he won't go back on his word.
Sskaaarrr!
"Shut up." He growled at the animal. Lying on his side, hands, hell, touch, kept to himself, Squall closed his eyes and awaited sleep to take over him.
Present Squall blinked back to his location and time period when present Pal kawwed at him. The odd bird was looking right at him. It's been doing that a lot since that night he and Irvine connected. 'Hn. Guess you feel threatened. Tough.' His wicked side gloates.
"Daddy, what do you want on your pizza?" Asked Kait unknowingly dispelling a stare-down.
"Whatever you'd like."
Brightening over creative reign, he grabbed the tin of stinky little fish. He found it when he and Quistis were looking for seasoning. "Spinach..."
"Edible, Little Bird." He requested receiving a thumbs up.
"Squall, can I show you something?" Quistis asked.
He followed her into the hall, then a bit further into his bedroom. "You're not going to confess to me again, are you?" He asked when seeing the door close to a crack.
"Don't be rude. It's about Kait." She powered her voice just in-case. "He doesn't see the big picture between you and Irvine yet; I had accidently used a plural when I'd said "dad" and he looked ill. You did talk with him about Irvine and your relationship, right?"
"Well.. I thought I had..." But, whether or not he was clear to the age of four is unknown. "I think I might have just told him about Irvine being a person and not a story." He let out a sigh of frustration. The last thing he wants is for his son and boyfriend to be at odds. One actually wouldn't exist without the other. If Irvine was still around, he'd of never adopted Kait into his life nor etched him into his heart. And if not for Kait, he'd likely still be in the dark about Irvine. "I'll talk to him. Clear and understandable." He informed. "Thanks for telling me."
"Of course." She gave his bicep a squeeze.
Unable to resist, he teased. "You're gonna settle with stealing touches?"
Quistis scoffed. "You're lucky we're no longer in our starting positions. I'd fail you on personal dislike." She smiled and walked out of the bedroom.
He could really understand Seifer's need to tease his friends... And the rest of humanity, it fun. Following after her, he assessed his gut-bomb dinner then assisted with putting it in the oven on the pizza brick.
...
"We'll be back in a little bit." He said to Quistis, who agreed to stay with Kait when Imari asked Squall out after dinner.
Kait wanted to go too, but had to be declined. He would have made a fuss, but Quistis calmed him by announcing it was time for dessert and a movie before bed. He was happy for the trade-off but his gaze lingered over his shoulder as the front door closed the exiting pair off to the world.
"Are we going for a drive?" Squall asked as they exited town on a rented electric scooter.
He felt his face redden as he felt Irvine's warmth through his back. The closeness of the small bike was more intimate that Seifer's motorcycle sport. The light breeze is tickle Imari's strange scent into his nose. The vanilla from his shampoo and lemon from his soap was so different from Irvine's clean ocean scent. But, it was not unpleasant. Just different.
'His heart is racing,' He assessed. 'I hope my holding him isn't irritating him. Or maybe..'
"Here we are." The scooter slowed to a stop.
Squall cocked a brow. They're by a patch of trees. He knows what they'd be doing if this was Irvine. But, with Imari, it was anyone's guess. He was about to say something, but silenced why his wrist was taken and he was led into the black beneath the cloistered tree branches and leaves. Imari reached out his hand tapping tree trunks as they went a little farther in. The he stopped.
"Do you know how to climb?" He asked.
Squall wasn't going to bother with a verbal response, he simply grabbed a low branch and started up. He could hear Imari beneath him, on his way up as well.
"Stop at the next branch." He instructed.
Squall felt a weight in his chest at those words. They were so familiar. Not in sound, but the words. He settled on a thick branch, made himself comfortable, then awaited Imari to sit as well on a branch beside his. "The stars look really nice from here."
"Don't they? Beautiful."
They sat quietly just staring at the sky. The twinkling stars dimmed and bloomed in and out of view. The moon loomed overhead observant of the pair. The warmth in the atmosphere just lingered with the light coolness coming from the surrounding ocean. He closed his eyes and breathed in each scent. The leaves, trees, the light salt in the fresh air. Imari. He smiled. It could really become a sought out scent. A strangely familiar sound opened his eyes.
"Here. Dessert. If you want it?" Imari said. He was holding a rope in his hand, he then tied it to the the branch he'd untied it from after it had lowered a small cooller. There was a low click that was attached to a cheap string of battery operated lights which illuminated the plastic bin. He lifted the lid, and pulled two little cakes out of it. "I got us a couple coffee cakes," he handed a plastic wrapped square of cake to Squall. "Aaand wine."
"Wine?" He accepted both cake and can.
"Non-alcohol."
"Aa."
They unwrapped their dessert then ate quietly in their own thoughts. But a low sniffle from Squall disrupted the solitude, as Imari asked.
"I was kinda hoping for a happy mood not sad... Have I done something wrong?" He set his snack back into the dangling cooller.
"No. Nothing's wrong, I'm just confused but happy."
"Why're you confused?" He studied Squall's illuminated profile. He felt an odd tug in his gut over how attractive the guy could be. He can see why physically Irvine liked him. Personality was something to get used to. He's used to friendly, talkative people. Not closed up, kinda rude, and easily tweaked.
"Because you're Imari, but this," he gestured to the set up of tree and cooller with his hand holding the can. "This is Irvine. On our third date, he brought me out of Garden and took me to the woods. Next thing I know we're up in a tree and eating lunch from a small picnic basket dangling between us. He called it a "Floating Picnic"." He sniffled. "Once we were done, we read to each other from a library book we were sharing." A weak smile dashed from his mouth. "It was one of the best times I've ever had with anyone."
Imari looked thoughtful. His gaze landed on his lap; his words fell there as if his eyes were a laser point to where to go. "About that... I've been thinking, and, I've been meaning to apologize to you."
"Why?"
"To all of you guys. You've been so nice to comply to me, but I've done nothing for you. So, I'm sorry." He swallowed his nerves. "I wanted to... I want to do better. You all love Irvine, I'm getting feelings but nothing so spectacular. So, I wanna try harder. I wanna be Irvine."
Squall was quiet.
"Squall?"
His words were held because the dam had broken right then, so when he spoke it sounded like an emotional canon was fired. "Would you?" He then burst into tears.
Imari nodded. "Yes. I will." He reached out, when the unopened can sailed to the forest floor, and took Squall's hand into his own, which held his tightly in return.
...
Imari lightened the mood by using his hair to tie the light weight cooller to a secured place while they descended the tree. He reached the forest floor after Squall, who recovered his dropped drink. Rescuing his boyfriend's hair from being pulled out, he calmed his chuckling and inquired.
"Why didn't you just use the rope and tie it around your waist?"
"And miss hearing how cute your continued laughter could be, I'll take the threat of missing chunks of hair." He smiled.
Squall placed his can inside, and kept it in his possess. "Imari, if you're sincere.. I wanna call you Irvine. The others should too.." He waited a moment for an objection, but when nothing came, he continued. "I want us to share a bed, I wanna.."
His words were cut off; Imari snatched him by one arm around his waist and pulled him into a kiss. Squall's balance swayed as he was pushed back to rest against the tree. Both hands are now cupping his cheek as he and Imari Karver engaged in a quiet conversation with their tongues. His hands held the muscled back, his fingertips enjoyed the light flexes there.
When they finally broke for air, Imari held Squall in a hug. "I'll be whomever you want.. Just let me stay with you..."
Squall wondered, as he hugged the near stranger in return. What Imari meant by that?
