At the Travel Agency, the blonde-haired male walked up to the counter to purchase a brand new shield. It was his nineteenth birthday today, albeit it wasn’t a very surprising day thus far. He wasn’t able to sleep in this morning, that’s for sure. When he walked into this tavern, a flood of memories filled his mind in a heartbeat, and these memories were not only about the summoner he journeyed with two years ago.
"So, there's a big ice monster out in Macalania and I have to fight it with Wakka and Rikku," he grumbled. "I thought birthdays were supposed to be enjoyable.”
After he purchased this snazzy new shield, Tidus caught sight of the establishment's owner just walking out of the hallway. The walls were painted vivid yellow, the same colour as this older man’s open yellow jacket.
"Hey, I remember you! You were the guy that raised funds to rebuild your home. Did that go well?" Tidus asked Rin.
"Well, if it isn't the young strapping man I encouraged to learn Al-Bhed two years ago," he chuckled out loud.
Out of view, Rin was currently carrying a wooden pallet crate with both arms, thus only Rin's head and lower body was visible. Setting the large crate down on the counter’s surface, Rin inhaled a breath of fresh air. Glancing at Tidus, the proud merchant presented him with a warm smile.
"Ah, how are your studies in Al-Bhed coming along?" Rin questioned with intense curiosity.
Approaching the strapping younger male, Rin lowered his torso slightly so that he was eye-level with Tidus. Placing a comforting hand on Tidus’ shoulder, Rin looked straight at the younger male's face.
"Ed'c kuehk knayd, dryhgc du oui!" Tidus shared with a grin appearing now. "Did I say that right? I thanked you in Al-Bhed. Dryhg oui!"
Surprised, Rin’s smile widened with joy. “Famm tuha!”
Being nineteen-years-old now, Tidus didn't look much different but his personality changed and so did his maturity. He stared into Rin's green-coloured eyes, seeing the kindness within them. Rin wore the same outfit as two years ago, even his shoulder-length blonde hair stayed the same. Neither of the two changed at all, really. Glancing from Rin to the wooden crate he just set onto the counter, he then glanced at the hand Rin placed on his shoulder. Tidus looked confused.
"What's with the crate? New supplies?" Tidus asked, making conversation. "Do you travel to Macalania every day then? I think I see you flying that helicopter thing. It looks really cool!"
In response, Rin gave a quick nod as a hum escaped his throat. The boy was intrigued, but Tidus was asking too many questions at once.
"So, do you really want to know what's inside this crate?"
With a hand still resting on Tidus’ broad shoulder, Rin guided the younger male over to the lone crate.
"Yeah, what's in the crate? It's just new supplies for your shop, right?"
Glancing from the crate back to Rin’s face once more, Tidus's lips parted slightly when he saw the sudden smile on Rin's face. Tidus looked back at this wooden crate once again, and the blonde-haired male gave it a suspicious tap with his hand. This was a slow, gentle tap as he wasn't sure what to expect.
"It's not a fiend, is it?"
“It’s not a fiend, my friend,” replied the proud merchant. "Why don't you have a look inside and see for yourself what it might be?”
Chuckling softly in amusement, Rin averted his focus over to the wooden crate as he went on to unlatch it.
"Blitzball equipment?" Tidus asked another question.
“It’s not Blitzball equipment, even though I like to play Blitzball in my spare time,” replied Rin.
Rising up to his tiptoes, Tidus had a look inside this unusually large crate. If it wasn't a fiend, then what could it be? Tidus found it odd how Rin had this abnormally large crate sitting on the counter and it couldn't possibly be what he thought it was.
Shocked, Tidus burst with joy, “H-Huh? Whoa!”
The opening of this mysterious wooden crate triggered a strange chirping sound to occur, as Rin reached inside with both arms. He picked out a warm chocobo egg that sat nicely in the palm of his hand. What, a large crate for this?! There was even a whole family of tiny chocobo babies just living inside this box.
"Here, this one's for you. Now you'll be able to own your very own chocobo," stated a chuckling Rin. "I bought this whole supply of chocobos from Clasko. Do you remember him? He has his own chocobo farm now in the Calm Lands.”
Placing the egg in Tidus’ hand, Rin rested his own hand against the younger male’s for a moment. His face was serious this time, as his green-coloured eyes simply stared at those ocean-blue hues.
“This chocobo egg is yours for free. Enjoy this gift, pendrtyo puo,” winked Rin.
Tidus was literally left speechless. In the Al-Bhed shop to originally buy a new shield, only to be given a chocobo egg as a gift. And this gift was from the handsome thirty-seven-year-old Al-Bhed merchant.
Raising a curious blonde brow as he thought for a second, Tidus just had to repeat Rin’s remark. “Pendrtyo puo? Is that ‘birthday boy’ in Al-Bhed?”
“Indeed it is. Have a good day full of fighting, young Tidus. I have faith in your victory.”
“Uh...thanks, I guess! It would be nice if I didn’t have to fight, though,” he shrugged. “Thanks for the chocobo. Yuna will be happy, I’m sure.”
“I’m positive she will be happy with the chocobo egg,” remarked Rin. “Come back again if you’d like to chat, okay?”
“Sure thing!”
----
‘...But, pendrtyo puo? Something tells me Rin was trying to be affectionate back at the shop earlier today. If anything, a guy wouldn’t be calling me affectionate terms in his own language in a totally normal conversation,’ or maybe that was his immaturity coming back.
