A/N: So this is the last chapter...
From Now On Chapter 11 Squall opened his blue eyes lazily, he was too comfortable in the warmth of the bed. The gentle morning sun warmed his skin and he felt his leg brushing Irvine's body. The boy's head was lying at his chest level on the mattress, and even though he seemed to be in an uncomfortable position, he was sleeping rather well. "Hmmmm..." Irvine touched Squall's leg when he woke up. "Morning." He smiled that bright smile of his. "Good morning." Irvine scratched Squall's belly, making him wince a little. "Why that face?" "What face?" "The worried one." "I was just thinking." "About?" "What I'll do with my life." "Ouch, such deep thoughts to think in the morning." "I wish I could brush them aside." "You think too much." "Yeah, I know." "So..." Irvine stretched and sat up. "What did you think?" "We'll graduate this year." "Thank goodness! There's a God after all, yes!" "I mean, what are we gonna do? Everyone will follow their path." "Hmmm... I didn't think about that. I mean, yes, I thought about it... But I didn't want to. I wish we could all stay together." "But we won't." "Well... thinking about it seriously... I don't know. I just wanna party. But I need money for parties." "Laguna said I could live with him." "Yeah? Cool." "In Esthar." "Hmm. Is that where he lives, isn't it?" "Yeah..." Irvine sighed. "And are you going? With him?" "I don't know... It's a possibility." Irvine lay again and buried his face in the pillow. "You're saying that now that we are together, we'll have to part?" "I didn't say that." "Yes, you did." "Irvine..." "..." Squall caressed Irvine's hair. "I don't think I'll be able to leave you right now... In fact, I was thinking... If you enroll in Garden... I..." "Will you do this for me?" "Well... not just for you. Maybe I want to be in a military academy. I like order. And a SeeD career seems to be very promising." "They are so fucking well-paid and they stay in the best places in trains and restaurants and hotels... And I bet they are VIP in clubs." "Yeah, lots of conveniences, but also... a lot of responsibility." "You deal well with it." "And you don't." "Hey, are you telling me I'm irresponsible?" Squall chuckled. "Yes." "I'm very responsible when it's a serious matter." "I know, I'm just kidding." Irvine smiled and kissed Squall's neck. "You know, I think I'm being more and more convinced to join you in Garden. But I want to be a sniper... And I think only Galbadia has this course." "Yeah, I think Cid said something about it." "But the first year classes are the same for everyone, then we can study together." "Again." "And you will do my homework." "..." "I know you'll do... Because..." Irvine put an arm around Squall's waist. "I'll pay you back in some way," he whispered. xxx It was very good the sensation, feeling the water running over his skin. It was like it washed away every worry from his mind. It was as if for that brief moment he had finally found peace. But all moments—the bad and the good ones—are gone some time, so Squall stepped out of the shower and finished his bath. He warped a towel around his waist and hoped he found no one in the short walk to his room... It was really much to ask. His grey blue eyes met the gaze of someone in the corridor. For a moment they stood in silence, only staring at each other. The brown eyes travelled over the wet skin of Squall's body, until they stopped. Then she looked directly in his eyes. "..." Squall said. Rinoa sighed. "He's really lucky, you know." "I'm sorry." "I don't need your apologies. Let's... forget it all happened. I don't want to suffer forever over a lost cause. I deserve better than this." "You do." And Rinoa just glimpsed one more time at him, before going down the stairs. Squall couldn't deny his relief when she left, it was really awkward to see her. He entered his room as quickly as he could and dried himself off. But he almost dropped his towel to the ground when he heard the door being opened. He tensed for a moment, before recognizing Irvine's voice. Squall turned to look at him, relieved that it... Wait... what was that? His eyelids were red and there was a purple shade around his eyes. His lips were crimson red and... was it black eyeliner? Squall gaped in shock. He didn't know Irvine had so many hidden facets. "It's not what you’re thinking." Well, Squall couldn't say he disliked Irvine wearing make up, but he just never had seen... "She made me do it," the taller boy said. "Selphie?" "She forced me to be her model for her make up experiences." "..." "Irvyyyyy! Where are you? I'm not finished yet!" "Save me, man." Irvine held Squall tightly. "Protect me, my love." He kissed the other boy's neck, leaving a lipstick mark over the pale skin. "There you are!" Irvine tried to hide behind Squall, but it didn't help the fact that he was taller than the boy. "Didn't you learn to knock, Selphy?" Irvine reprimanded the girl. "Yes, I did! But the door was opened..." The girl watched the pair. "Oh... I'm starting to think you are cute together." Irvine embraced Squall and kissed his temple, making the boy blush furiously. "Oh... it makes me wanna put more make up on you and Squall and make you pose for me and my camera." "Let's do it girl!" Squall cast an icy glare at Irvine. "Ohhh... I don't think so, Selphie... I still like sex more..." Irvine looked at Squall. "I don't mind you fucking in front of me." "I do," Squall answered and disentangled himself from Irvine's arms. He walked to the bathroom again to tried and clean up the red mark on his neck, what if someone saw him... "Holy shit, what's that on your neck?" Squall wanted to hit his head against the wall. He felt a big hand tilt his head up to expose his neck. "I didn't know you liked girls, unbelievable." Squall brushed the hand out of him and glared angrily at Seifer. "No, it was me." Irvine appeared in the corridor. Seifer looked at him once. Then looked at him twice. And blinked. " Aahhahahahahhahahahahhaha." "Hey! Stop it!" "Aahhahahahahhahahahahhaha... ... Hmm... Ahahahahhahahahah." "You're just jealous because I look more pretty than you in make up... and besides... girls like it..." "..." Squall said. "But it's you that I love, love... Squall?" He saw the brunet turning and walking for his room again. "Hey, look what you've done!" Irvine put his hands on his hips and stared angrily at Seifer. "Ahahhahahahahhahahahha... You look so funny with your face all painted." "I think it's kinda pretty." Both boys looked at the voice's direction. Did I say that out loud? Zell stood frozen on the spot. Even Squall stopped in his tracks to look back at the source of the comment. "Oooohh it's starting to get interesting!" Selphie watched the boys in the corridor. "What's all this noise here?" Quistis opened the door to her room. "Squall is jealous of Irvine." What? I'm not... I'm not. "It's so cute." Squall wanted to die... Why did everyone’s attention always land on him in the end? What did he do wrong in all his past lives? Why did his life have to be so difficult? Why was everything so difficult for a teenager? xxx There were several enemies in front of him. They were all in dark uniforms but had their faces strangely painted in pink and red. Not letting them catch him, Zell ran over the hills as quickly as he could. The forest was already in his line of vision and he looked back to be assured that there were no one following him. The first trees had been left behind and he found himself in the middle of a maze. There were several statues with men with grave expressions on their faces. Zell walked round and round for a long time, until he found the exit and was back at the forest. He made sure again that no one was around and followed on his way. A lake appeared in the middle of the forest, with purple waters waving gently. He crouched and touched it with his fingertips. Then suddenly he was pulled down into the water and felt like choking. Was he dying? He thought he did. But then he opened his eyes and found himself in the room he shared with Seifer. He looked around, trying to find a sign of the tall blond's presence, but he found nothing. Even the other bed was not there. He stood up quickly. Where was he? A bad feeling. He walked out of the room and found a man standing in the corridor. He was in his middle ages and shook his head to the sides several times. Then he entered a bedroom. Zell waited. And waited. Until another man appeared. He was younger and rather handsome. The man smiled and walked past the blond boy. Following the man, Zell found himself in the basement. The man picked up a box and took a book from it. He smiled again at Zell and showed him some medals on his chest. He must have been in the army, the boy concluded. "She was very sad." "Who?" Zell asked. The man spoke a name, but the tattooed boy couldn't hear. "What did you say?" The man repeated the name and frowned a little when he saw that Zell couldn't understand. Then he shook his head. "She was very sad." "Yeah..." Zell said; then nodded. "There is no end, you know. Years and centuries. It's all in vain." "What is?" Suddenly he felt a soft thing nudging at his leg. Zell looked down and saw a sad looking dog. He patted his head gently, before looking again at the man. "I saved many. I entered the war to save lives, as strange as it may seem. I killed many. It's a curse." "I..." Zell trailed off. "I'm in pain. Let me out." "Hmm..." The man stared at him. "I'm sorry." "Do you know what to do? With your life?" "I'll go to college." The man shook his head. "I can’t do anything." Zell acknowledged he was in his room. Man, what a headache, he had drunk too much. In the end of the afternoon they all had set arrangements for a barbecue outside. They made a fire and prepared small pieces of meat to eat. They brought lots of drinks too and at the middle of the night almost everyone was drunk. At a moment someone (Selphie?) had the great idea of a race to the river and everyone ended up all wet. He must have been carried to his room, because he didn't remember walking there. He looked at the side of the room and found Seife's bed still there. Deciding to look out for the tall blond, Zell left the room. He didn't know why, but his footsteps led him to the basement. Looking at the closed door, he remembered the dream. It was a very strange dream, and it sent chills down his spine. His body felt suddenly tense. Inhaling deeply, he opened the door slowly. It was all dark and he turned on the dim light of the room. He walked carefully around and searched for the place he saw the man in his dream picking up a box. To his frustration, there was no box like the dream anywhere. Then he felt a presence behind him... His heart started to beat faster and he thought he would pass out. "What are you doing here?" Zell jumped on the spot. Then he saw a tall blond staring at him. "I'm looking for something." "For what?" "A box." "?" Seifer arched one eyebrow. "I saw... You wouldn't believe me..." "What, Zell?" Seifer asked patiently. "I'm looking for a black box." "This one?" Seifer pointed at a box on a table just beside the short blond. "..." It was the place that the man put the box in his dream. "Yeah..." Zell looked at it as if gathering the courage to open it. "Don't be a chicken wuss, it's just a box." Zell took a deep breath and opened it. There was an album inside. His eyes scanned the pages and he suddenly smiled. There were family pictures. Happy ones. "Look at this." Seifer looked at a picture of two boys running after a dog. "Hmm..." "..." Zell looked at the picture. "Are you alright?" "Yeah... It's... It's a nice album." He turned the pages. "I guess that if I had a family, I'd be frowning in a photo too, like this boy." Seifer pointed at the picture. "Oh... but Selphie takes a lot of photos, I bet she has one of you looking angry at something." "Yeah, I think so." "Why did you come here?" "Oh yeah, I was looking for a fishing rod I found in here days ago." "Are you gonna fish?" "Yes." "Now?" "Yeah..." "Why?" "Because I want to." "Alone?" "Well, yes..." Seifer looked around and found the fishing rod and some other fishing equipment. "Unless you want to come with me." "It seems boring, can I bring my..." "No! I don't want you making noise with your games and scaring the fish." "Okay..." Zell picked the album, deciding to ask Laguna to give it back to the former owner of the house. Then he walked to the door's direction. "See you, later." He looked back and left the basement. Seifer sighed. He gathered the equipment and turned off the light. Walking slowly, the kept thinking of Zell and his strange behavior in that house... He couldn't deny that there was something strange in that place... But he couldn't allow himself to be scared. Brushing the thoughts aside, he concentrated on feeling the night cool air against his skin. He smelled the scent of the flowers and leaves, that particular scent of nature. He made his way slowly towards the river, enjoying the solitude of the forest. Sometimes, it was good to be all alone. That was why he liked fishing. He could be there, with time all for himself. Time to think about his life, about his plans, about his future. Reaching the river, he took the boat and freed it from the chains that held it in place. But then he stopped, feeling a presence near him. "I promise I didn't brought any games." Seifer just looked at Zell for a long time before finally speaking. "You were really brave to walk all the way here in the night." "I wanted to be with you... I mean... Maybe fishing is interesting." "Okay." Seifer motioned for Zell to get on the boat, then he guided it to deep waters. Soon they were a little distant from the river bank, in the middle of water water and water. Zell was a little concerned with the boat shaking slightly because of the small waves, but he prayed it wouldn’t turn. "Relax." Seifer set his fishing rod after throwing the bait. "Well..." Zell felt the boat moving gently in the river. The moon was shining brightly in the night sky, its rays creating silver lines on the water. The crickets sang and the owls murmured. It's boring. Zell looked at Seifer and he saw a concentrated expression on his face. He looked at the direction of the green gaze and only found water. He couldn't understand why Seifer liked it so much, but he seemed in peace; his body was relaxed and his handsome face was very calm. No cruel remarks, no jokes, no smirks. "Come here." Seifer looked at Zell. The short blond tried to move closer as swiftly as he could not to make the boat turn. Victoriously, he rested his head on Seifer's lap and felt a hand come down to caress his tattooed cheek. It was nice. Fishing wasn't so bad after all. xxx Irvine's body was pressed against his as the boy walked through the corridors. The had drunk and drunk and drunk by the fire and it was a task for him to carry him back to their room. "You could help me here," Squall said. "Hmm?" Irvine groaned. "You could walk at least." Irvine was holding tightly onto Squall, not to fall to the ground. "Trying..." Squall sighed and concentrated on his task... if maybe the other boy had passed out, he could carry him more easily... But drunk... he made it even more difficult, stumbling from side to side. Finally he reached the room and left Irvine on the bed. The long-haired boy complained and grabbed a pillow. Squall looked at the boy slumped on the bed. He seemed to have fallen asleep. He looked kind of innocent and it made Squall's heart clench in longing. But even though he enjoyed watching Irvine sleep, a frustrating conclusion came to his mind by the sight: there would be no sex that night. Damn. He closed the door gently and wandered through the house. He looked at the window and saw Selphie and Quistis still talking by the fire. Nida and Rinoa had gone to their room long ago. Where to go then? His footsteps led him to the main floor and he decided to enter the game room, see his father's weapon collection. After entering the room, he saw that he wasn't alone there. Laguna was gazing at a particular weapon. A machine gun. He touched the glass that protected it with his fingertips and seemed to be lost in his thoughts. "Can't sleep?" The man asked, without even turning to look at the boy. "I don't feel like sleeping." Squall arched one eyebrow. "How did you know I was here?" "Somehow I'm always alert at someone getting closer." Laguna turned. "And I knew it was you because I know how you walk. It's firm, and precise, but it's not forceful." "Sorry to interrupt you." Laguna smiled. "You didn't need to... I was just... remembering some things." "Old times?" "Please... I don't like to think I'm that old." He moved closer to the boy. "You know, I hated war but... There was something in it that always brings me back to it, makes me think about it." "Laguna... I..." "?" "I decided to take the Garden's course. I want to become a SeeD." "Oh... I didn't know you were thinking about it... But then... I can’t say I'm surprised." "I don't know why I told you that, but... I felt like telling you." "Is it a final decision? Have you made up your mind?" "I think so." Laguna sighed and walked to the doorway, stopping at his son's side. "Squall?" "Yes?" "Will you come with me to a place?" Why not? Soon they were walking through the forest. Walking and walking for a long time, until Squall started to get suspicious. "Are you lost?" "Oh..." Laguna stopped. "No... It's just... taking longer than I remember." "Did you forget your way?" "I don't think so..." They resumed their walking and when Squall saw the same tree for the third time, he stopped. "Maybe... Maybe I forgot a part of the way." The man scratched the back of his head in thought. "Let's go back." "Are you disappointed at me?" Laguna looked down. "No... it's just... there's no use in walking without knowing where we going." "I know where!" "You just don't know how." "..." "..." "Squall..." Laguna stared at the boy. "Just..." "...?" "Stay with me..." he whispered. "At least for a while longer... I don't know when we'll have time to meet each other again after this trip is over." "Laguna..." "I'll miss you." Squall walked towards the man and stopped by his side, unsure of what he was doing, but eventually he grabbed the man’s hand. "Let's walk then." Laguna smiled brightly. "I think it's over here." While they were walking in the night, Squall looked at the man's face sometimes, studying his attractive features illuminated by the moonlight. And he felt a bittersweet admiration and guilt, it was his father after all. It is so strange, this feeling... They reached a clearing in the middle of the forest. From there they could see a huge full moon in the sky. The earth was decorated with high grass and white flowers with several thin petals forming a fluffy circle over the long stem. Laguna lay on the soft grass and Squall felt encouraged to lay beside him. The plants under his body made it so good to lie there. Just being there and watching the stars on the horizon. "I love this place. I found it when I was wandering in the forest years ago." "When you were lost?" "..." Laguna frowned. "Something like that." Squall tried not to chuckle. "Ah... you think it's funny?" "Maybe..." "I'm happy, you know, that now you can make fun of me... that you're not angry at me." He turned to his side to face Squall's lying form. "When I saw you for the first time... When I saw you... I wanted so much to be a part of your life, to make up for the time we've lost... the time we could have been together... At least... These days here we could be together, and it meant the world to me." Squall held his breath. Even though, deep inside, he liked what Laguna was telling him, he still felt awkward in those kinds of moments... Feelings weren't an easy thing for him to deal with, so he remained silent. And Laguna understood his silence. "I love you, you know." Squall closed his eyes after hearing those words. "You're so important to me... I have to confess that before I met you I thought you were important to me, but I was lying to myself, I was trying to feel what I thought I should feel, but now... Now that I know you... at least a little part of you, now I can feel what you mean to me... And you got me all confused, and I don't know exactly how this love for you works, but I do love you." Squall felt the night breeze caress his skin and the smell of the white flowers. "I know," he finally said after a brief moment of silence. Laguna moved closer and looked at the boy's peaceful expression. "Even though we may be distant, I promise to be there when you need me... After all, I'm your fa... I'm someone who will always be here... From now on..." "No... Don't promise anything" Laguna made a saddened face. "Okay..." Squall opened his eyes and stared at him. "Thank you, Laguna." And the man's smile began to shine again. xxx The sun was high in the sky and it punished the group's bodies with its warmth. They had packed in the morning and eaten their last breakfast in the house. It was time to say goodbye to the place. They had walked to the point where Ragnarok would be landed, waiting for their arrival. They were almost ready to go on board, just a few more luggage to take inside. Squall looked back at the way they came and suddenly was struck with a series of images from their trip. The sad moments, the frustrating moments, the confusing moments and then... the good moments. For sure it would fill his mind with unforgettable memories. Despite all the chaotic hours he had spent, the desperate times, the trip was worth it. Definitely. "Are you smiling, Leonhart?" The tall blond boy arched an eyebrow at the unexpected expression. "..." "Oh, Seifer, you're going crazy, you know he wasn't born with the ability to smile..." Quistis was carrying a heavy bag to the Ragnarok and then stopped suddenly. "Hey... I think we've forgotten something." "The camera is here!" Selphie exclaimed. "Or did we forget a costume?" "No." Irvine said. "You made me carry them..." The boy was carrying several boxes. "And the picnic things?" "...Here..." Zell was having a hard time to keep his balance carrying so many objects. "Hey..." Rinoa stopped in her tracks. "What is it?" Nida asked. "I thought..." "Ragnarok is ready!" Laguna shouted at the airship. "Are you coming?" The man waved at the group. And they all ran towards it. After some more minutes, everything was in place and they took their seats. It was just after Ragnarok had been flying for some time that someone remembered what they had forgotten. School work? They had to reunited again during the night to rush things before the next morning... x x x x The End A/N:From now on... I choose this title because I created this story to be the point when Squall’s ‘new life’ began, so the birthday thing wasn’t really random. It’s when he started to experience some new things and then decided what to do with his life. I think that almost every teenager wonders what they’re gonna do with their lives at some point. And I’ve been listening to Birthday by The Crüxshadows and I think it’s influenced me in some way. I think it’s very good to be young. And of course, there’s Laguna’s side of the story too. Suddenly he sees himself in a house full of teenagers and starts to think about what he had done with his life and remember the time when he was young. Well, somehow I was able to accomplish what I had challenged myself to do, which was writing something with SeiferxZell and LagunaxSquall, but I really think that IrvinexSquall is easier for me to write. I’m sorry if I disappointed some of you guys—Squall didn’t end up with Laguna—but my plot asked for it... I wanted to develop their turbulent relationship; starting with an awkward situation in the beginning, then reaching the point when they became lovers and finishing with Squall accepting Laguna in his life, maybe not much like a father, but something without a clear definition (I don’t think everything in life has to be labeled). In the end Laguna succeeded in his plan to be a part of Squall’s life and be there for him from that moment on. And well, sometimes I think that it may not be really the end, because Squall’s life has just begun and maybe he could meet his father in Esthar and have a good particular family meeting, maybe alone, maybe inviting some cowboy for a private party and... well, this is my imagination on the loose... Back to the long note: It may have seen I left something unfinished about the house being haunted, but it actually was written the way I’ve planned. It was never meant to be a horror story. I just suggested that there might be some supernatural energies in the house. Some people say they feel something strange about certain places and don't know exactly why, but their lives still go on. My intention was to approach this theme in this way. I hope someone out there had fun reading it. I think I’ll repost this story when I have the time to correct some of the mistakes I’ve made, but I think I’ll be more focused on writing new stuff. I decided to keep writing and posting the English versions of my stories, so I’ll have more fics to come. I’m working on a SxS right now and it will be up soon (I hope). I’d appreciate it if someone reviewed this story, so I’d know what I did right and what I did wrong. I don’t think there’s much to change here now, since it’s already done, but reader’s opinions always help me to improve my writing and have more ideas. Thanks to all who had read and reviewed.
