Important note~ for those of you who are wondering, the main plot of Fatal Frame II is ignored in this writing. Another important warning is that Rinoa is very evil in this. And that I rushed a little on the Preface. I may go back and revamp it later.
The Lost Village
They say that if you get lost in a forest, the Lost Village will steal you away forever.
A raven-haired woman pulled a stoic brunette man behind her as she talked excitedly.
“We’re going to catch a train to my hometown and then we’ll be able to see the spot where the dam will be built. I want to see the place that I played in when I was a little girl once more before they tear it all up. It was my favorite spot!” She said rapidly, ignorant of the fact that her boyfriend wasn’t listening. His pale eyes were on their scenery, his thoughts wondering. Rinoa looked at the brunette and rolled her doe-like eyes.
“LEON!” She shouted, drawing his attention to her. He frowned slightly at her antics, noticing that her loudness had drawn the attention of passerby.
“What?” He asked.
“Do you have money for two train tickets, hun?” She asked sweetly.
“Yes, why?” He questioned. Rinoa huffed.
“So you weren’t listening to me! You so do not deserve me, Leon! Just be glad that I put up with your little quirks.” The black haired woman said darkly. The young man merely blinked at this and set his attention elsewhere. On the ticket booth, hopefully that would draw her attention away from him. It worked. She promptly began dragging him towards it. Their parents had arranged their relationship, they had no idea that he was miserable. He paid for the tickets and allowed himself to be dragged onto the train. It wasn’t that he just didn’t care about the pushy girl; he just felt an overwhelming sense of wrongness about his whole life. He felt like he didn’t belong here. He seated himself across from Rinoa, who was suspiciously silent, her eyes on him. He returned the gaze.
“You know, Leon, you should really learn to overcome these things. When you were little, you didn’t go on the swings with me because you didn’t like the ropes …scratch that. You were utterly terrified of them. Grow a backbone!” She told him. He frowned, looking out the window instead of at her. This proved to further piss the girl off, but Rinoa didn’t say anything. Down girl, after today, Leon will find you to be irresistible! That thought comforted her and she joined her boyfriend’s silent scrutiny of the passing landscape. She didn’t see what was so special. What could be out there that was more important to him than her?
The train ride was made in near silence, the black haired girl sighing in frustration every so often, which was either blatantly ignored or not noticed by the beautiful brunette. When the train stopped, Rinoa grabbed the sleeve of Leon’s leather jacket and pulled him along with her. The fleeting thought of slipping out of it to escape her zealous clutches made him almost smile.
“Hun?” She asked suddenly.
“What?” Leon questioned, knowing she was either about to criticize him or ask for money.
“Do you have money for a cab?” She asked with pleading eyes. It had been the latter… He dug through the pocket of his leather pants and pulled out the last of his money to give to his greedy girlfriend. Why did he just do this? Because the last and only time he said ‘no’, he would have rather just handed it over instead of listening to her whining, that’s why. She smiled and proceeded to drag him to hail a cab from the train station. He wanted to throw off her touch in the worst way but resisted.
“This is going to be so fun! You’re going to see the place I found when I was little. It’s the most beautiful part of the forest.” She insisted. Leon leaned against the window with a bored expression, his grey-blue eyes watching the scenery again. Rinoa’s eyes narrowed but she contained herself. Just wait… He won’t be able to resist me when I have him cornered. Especially with this drug I brought. It’ll have to work! She fingered the syringe that her mother had purchased for her. It was supposed to be used for her sleeping medication, but an aphrodisiac wasn’t that different… Her eyes returned to the road when they had reached practically the middle of nowhere.
“Stop! We’re here!” She cried, confident that this was the spot. Heavy equipment was stored near the edge of the forest, ready to be used for the construction of All God’s Dam. The cabby shot the girl a quizzical look, but stopped anyway. Rinoa got out of the cab excitedly, her boyfriend following suit slowly.
“Here?” He asked, looking around. How were they supposed to get back? Before he could voice this question, the cab drove away. Leon scowled darkly.
“Rinoa, how are we supposed to get back?” He questioned. The girl faltered, her face falling.
“Um…we’ll…uh…hitchhike!” She said, trying to sound as if it were planned the entire time. Leon placed a hand on his hip and buried his face in his other hand. Just great… He was tugged from that stance sharply.
“Let’s go! This will be great!” The black haired girl insisted, her grip becoming too hard. Leon blinked when the feel of skin was briefly replaced by the feel of course rope. His heart instantly sped up and he yanked his hand away with a cry. Rinoa instantly spun around to confront him but paused at his terrified and puzzled expression.
“Gosh, Leon. Don’t freak out on me. I don’t know what I’d do if I had to go through another one of your episodes.” She said disdainfully. Leon suppressed his fear and his expression returned to blankness. He hated to show emotion, especially around her. They walked until Rinoa found a shallow creak and deemed this the perfect spot.
“Okay, we’re here! This is the spot!” She declared. The brunette looked around. It was a pretty spot but they could’ve found something just as pretty nearer to home. He didn’t particularly care about the sentimental value it had. He turned to his girlfriend.
“Is this it?” He questioned, his tone bored. She blinked and instantly began fuming inside. How dare he! Ok, ok, it was now or never! It was last thing that she could do to win the beautiful man over. Get him horny and have sex with him. That way she could get pregnant and he’d have to love her. When he turned away from her disdainful look, she took that opportunity to take the syringe from her blue jacket, hiding it behind her back. The raven-haired girl approached him then with a coy expression. Leon felt her draw nearer and turned to face her.
“You know what, Leon? I really, truly love you more than anything. I want us to work. I want us to be happy.” She murmured with a smile. He frowned suspiciously. Rinoa had never spoken of love before… He shifted uneasily when both of her arms wrapped around his neck and she pulled him down for a kiss. He gasped against her mouth when something pierced the back of his neck. Leon drew back and the offending object fell to the ground. Stormy blue eyes widened.
“Rinoa? What have you done?” He asked, his vision blurring slightly as the drug took hold. Her smile was distorted and wrong to him. He backed into a tree when she moved closer to him.
“Where are you going, Leon? Are you trying to play a game?” She asked, fully aware of the effects of the most powerful aphrodisiac she could obtain. A weak date-rape drug that confused the senses. The brunette murmured something that she couldn’t understand as she caressed his cheek. Oh, she couldn’t wait to have something that beautiful wrapped around her! Her cheeks flushed at the thought and she began to shed his clothing for him, seeing as he was so disoriented. His jacket and white tee shirt hit the water of the creak, being washed away. Her mouth latched onto his neck as she tried his pants.
(Author Note- EW. EW! EWWWW! >< I’m going to get this over with now.)
“Sei..Fer…” Leon whispered with more passion and emotion than Rinoa had ever heard from him. She pulled away from him sharply.
“What?? Who the Hell is Seifer?!” She demanded. The brunette slumped to the ground with a soft sound. Rinoa was distraught.
“That’s a boy’s name! Are you cheating on me?!? With a boy???” The black haired girl questioned, beyond angry.
(Author’s Note- Well…sorta…XD)
The brunette made a small noise, nothing decipherable though. Rinoa then kicked him harshly.
“That’s it! It’s over between us, Leon! You’ll be hearing from my parents and their lawyer!” She huffed and stormed off. Leon drifted off into a fitful sleep, unaware of his surroundings.
The constant chirping of crickets woke the young man up, his grey-blue eyes slipping open dazedly. He couldn’t remember why he was out in the forest or the things that Rinoa had done to him. His lithe body shifted, aching with cold. What happened to his shirt and jacket escaped him. He shook his head, disturbing his wild chocolate locks as he tried to clear his mind.
Leon stood shakily, his breath freezing in the air before him. How had he gotten in this mess? He cursed softly and looked around. A forest was at every direction he looked. All he heard was the sounds of the forest at night. No cars, he wasn’t close to any road. God damn it. He frowned, trying to rack his brain for answers, but none came. His eyes scanned the trees, catching a flitting red glow between the trees. The lithe man walked towards it, if only to find out what it was. As he drew nearer, the glow would move further, as if it wanted him to follow it. Suddenly, the darkness around him seemed to shift drastically, becoming pitch dark and swallowing him. He eyed his surroundings frantically, suddenly very afraid. The glow he had been following was nowhere to be seen.
Soft chanting caught Leon’s attention and he looked up a nearby hill to see smoke rising from what only could be a fire. He went towards it, noticing that as he drew nearer, the singing became softer. When he crested the hill, the singing stopped all together. A Shinto Gate stood before him, surrounded by lit torches. The brunette man glanced behind him to find the path blocked.
Thoroughly spooked, the young man walked until he reached the end of the hilltop, finding that it overlooked an ancient looking village. A deserted village? He shuddered against the cold air, wrapping his slim arms around his bared chest. There was no choice but to go down there, seeing as the way he came was mysteriously blocked. Leon walked down a pathway and entered the village.
What happened here? Some of the buildings were inaccessible, torn down, or so warped that it appeared the house would collapse any day. He opened the door to the first house he came upon and entered. He had thought that it would be warmer inside, but the chill in the air only seemed to worsen. He wondered around, looking at the furnishings. This village seemed to be dated back to ancient Japan, it was impossible that it had survived. Then… What did this all mean?
He walked carefully over the warped floorboards, his pale eyes spotting a book lying near a fireplace area. His hands picked it up gently and he flipped to the first page.
How much time has passed since I came here? How long will this night last? I can’t take the darkness. It’s driving me crazy… I have to get out of here! I have to see Masumi.
Leon blinked in confusion. This person had ended up here too? Violent shivers overtook the brunette’s lithe body and he left the book where it had been, searching for something that could warm him. He found kimonos in the next room near a lattice. The itchy and smelly fabric was horrible to wear but it warmed him considerably. He laid his leather pants and boots aside.
He saw something move out of the corner of his eye and he jumped, spinning around to face it. His reflection stared back at him.
The lithe young man stared at himself as if he had never seen his reflection before. A feeling of familiarity grasped him, but he didn’t know why. This whole ordeal was confusing, tiring him more than anything had in his life. Leon sank to the floor and passed out.
Deep in the village, a teenager wearing a bloodstained kimono wondered around, insane laughter bubbling from her every so often. She stopped and quieted as a feeling of melancholy grasped her, a feeling that she hadn’t felt for centuries. Someone was in the village, but revenge didn’t accompany this person. How strange, she mused, still tilting on the verge of insanity, but intrigued by this new feeling. I’ll just have to watch then when they come out of hiding.
Leon exhaled a sharp gasp of air and sat up, his hands finding his head. He looked around warily. He was still here, it hadn’t been a dream… The young man got to his feet and walked from the room. A chilly feeling gripped him and he stopped in his tracks, afraid.
Why…? Came the moan behind him and he spun around to face the ghost of a woman. He backed away as she came closer to him, her eyes hidden behind stringy hair. She reached for him and Leon turned to run, only to find that a spirit of a young boy stood there in front of him.
Over hereeee! He called as if playing a game of Tag. Laughter from more children came as if they were seeking the boy out. Leon gasped as transparent arms went through his body, draining his energy and making him feel so tired. He jerked away from the spirit of the woman and ran through the boy to fling open the front door of the house, breaking into the open air. The spirit’s voices faded, as if they couldn’t follow him outside. He had to find a safe place to hide and think this out.
The pale-eyed youth walked warily towards a building that looked like it was a storehouse, finding the fence to have a small door to slip to the back. He went to the back and fell to his knees. Leon hadn’t expected a voice to speak to him.
“….Squall?” Questioned the astonished voice of another young man. Leon started and looked up, finding a silver haired boy looking down at him from behind bars. The boy wasn’t a spirit and appeared fully alive.
“What? Are you trapped here too?” Leon asked. The boy blinked his icy blue eyes.
“Squall, how are you alive? You were put through the Crimson Sacrifice…” Confusion laced the young voice.
“I think you’re confusing me with someone else. My name is Leon.” The brunette answered, confident that the other boy had mistaken him for someone else. The boy gave him a puzzled look and then something akin to realization and sadness struck the trapped boy.
“So I haven’t been imagining it, I really have been reliving the same events over and over…” He said more to himself than to Leon.
“Squall, you’ve been reborn haven’t you? You can’t remember anything? About the village?” The silver haired boy asked. Leon frowned at that suggestion and then paused. He hadn’t believed in ghosts until now either. So why would being reborn be any weirder or far-fetched?
“Do you really think I’m this Squall person?” Leon asked. The boy nodded. Leon sighed.
“Then I have no reason not to believe you. What’s your name?” Leon asked.
“I’m Itsuki, your friend.” Itsuki told the confused brunette. The youth lowered his gaze and frowned. Itsuki’s eyes gentled.
“Why don’t you go home and try to remember. Your house is right next to mine.” He said. The other man shot him a puzzled look, furthering his belief that all of this was really happening.
“It’s near the shrine on the right. Come back to talk to me when you’re ready.” Itsuki said gently. Leon looked wary.
“What about the ghosts?” He asked, afraid. Itsuki just shook his head at the brunette, still in denial that the entire village had been killed. He would have to gather his thoughts as well.
Leon left the jailhouse to follow Itsuki’s directions. His life had been turned upside down and he didn’t know what to do anymore. Had everything in his life pointed him here? That feeling of wrongness? He entered the house that Itsuki had said was once his and slid the door closed. No ghosts were there to greet him, thankfully. He sighed gently and began looking around the house, startled by the feeling of recognition of each room. He ended up in the bedroom, discovering a discarded journal. My journal, he realized and he picked it up, reading. The handwriting was his, albeit sloppy though.
Kurosawa-sama gave me a journal to write my thoughts in. I thanked him for it.
The entry was simple, written when he was very young. He turned to the next entry.
I met Yae and Sae today and we played together. I met a boy named Seifer with weird blonde hair. He’s mean.
He continued reading, the entries progressing in complexity. He grew closer with the twins and befriended Seifer. When he had written about Seifer… The words had become harder to understand, heavy laden with meaning. Especially the last few entries. He came to the last two.
Kurosawa-sama was watching me intensely yesterday. It was unnerving and uncomfortable. Maybe he has found out about Seifer and me? Yae and Sae have always been so nice to me, now they have grown distant. They seem so sad. Only Sae seems to take the time to speak with me. Even then… something akin to pity shines in her eyes.
Squall
Found out about what? Leon thought in confusion. He continued to the next entry, mildly surprised when the handwriting didn’t belong to him.
The entry above will be the last words written by Squall, my beloved friend. Tonight, Squall will be sacrificed as the Kusabi, to save the village from the X, if only until Itsuki and Mutsuki’s ritual.
Leon’s breathing became heavy as memories flashed across his mind, his hands loosing their grasp on the journal. He moaned, falling onto his side, his eyes finding his reflection in his mirror. A gasp escaped him when he realized his reflection had moved without him and placed their hand against the glass of their side.
“Squall…” Leon murmured, realizing that his true self had surfaced and was waiting for him. To complete one another. The brunette got to his hands and knees and crawled towards the mirror. He placed his hand over the mirror, wanting to press it to the skin of Squall’s. Surprisingly, their hands did meet and ropes engulfed both of them, both souls fearful and crying out. But all of it ended as soon as it began, and Squall fell limply to the ground, tears falling from his closed eyes.
Where am I? A soft sound escaped Squall’s lips and he opened his stormy blue eyes. He found himself to be lying on his mat in his room. His room looked so much older now for some reason. How much time had passed since… He gasped and sat up.
“SEIFER!” He called desperately, worried about his lover. The lithe man got up and rushed outside, shocked at the sight that greeted him. What had happened to All God’s Village. Why was he alive? How much time had passed? Where was Seifer? Someone walked past him and Squall jumped, frightened at the sight of a ghost. The spirit glanced at him briefly before returning to what it had been doing. No..No..No… Everyone was gone? What was going on? He collapsed where he stood, tears tracking down his face. He felt another presence and looked to the side.
Sae froze in her inspection of the village, all insanity flying out of her mind as she spotted someone kneeling on the ground, looking crestfallen. He looked at her with teary eyes, the eyes only her quiet friend could possess.
“Sae…?” He questioned softly. It was him… It was Squall. He was alive! He was… She stopped in her joyful thoughts. He was alive, but everyone else had died. He was alone again. Oh Squall… She kept her eyes on him as he moved to stand up.
“Sae? What’s happened? Where’s Seifer? Please… Tell me he’s ok. Why is everyone…” Squall stopped then and lowered his face, knowing that the answers wouldn’t help him. The twin saw this.
“Oh Squall…” Sae was overwhelmed with guilt now. She had never felt guilty over killing those that got in her way. Now, all she could think of was how wrong she had been. Now that Squall was here, she could think rationally. But now what would happen tonight? Squall approached her, reaching out to touch his ailing friend, but stopped, knowing it would hurt them both.
“Forgive me…” Sae said brokenly. The brunette looked at his friend and merely nodded.
“Is Seifer…? Can I …?” He murmured. Sae shook her head frantically.
“No! I can’t. Squall, he won’t know it’s you. He’s a Mourner. He can’t see and he’s gone insane. He…” Sae stopped when the pale-eyed man hung his head, tears welling up constantly now.
“Please…?” He asked. Sae paused and then nodded, fading in and out of existence as she led him to the Chamber. Squall froze at the door, his stormy eyes widening as painful memories hit him.
Ropes…Pain…Staffs…Blood…Kusabi…Seifer…Pain…Death…
Sae looked back at him when he didn’t follow her, seeing his agonized look. He was trembling visibly, but stepped into the room anyway, his want to be with Seifer overriding his need to flee and get away from the place of his death.
