Chapter Two
Zack looked at the glass and nodded his head slowly. He picked up the glass downing the water before setting it back down. Cloud had found the glasses only after two three minutes, so at least maybe some of the blonde's memory of this time frame was returning.
“I forgot how annoying seventeen was really. All this... built up...” Zack trailed off. He thought for a moment on how to word it. He finally decided on one word not a very articulate one, but what seventeen year old was articulate. “Stuff.” Cloud raised an eyebrow at Zack. “Just don't mention your stuff to me. I think I've been traumatised enough for one day.” “Hey you never know you might like my stuff.” Zack teased. “If your stuff is like your cupboards then no thanks.” Cloud shook his head. “Hey what's wrong with my cupboards?” Zack frowned at Cloud. Cloud had obviously been through them before he could. “Caffeine, sugar, junk food your cupboards is filled with it. Did you really eat like this all the time?”Zack thought back on it for a moment. How had he lived back in ShinRa? He tried to recall. He remembered he made due on what he could while they were on the run.
“I guess I did if it's all there, but I get the feeling, Seph and Angeal they kinda made sure I was okay, eating right and all that.” Cloud crouched in front of him. “Zack you're going to blow our cover if you're not careful.” Zack nodded. “Angeal he wants to get this checked out.” He tapped his arm. “I guess I panicked.” Cloud lifted the bandage some to look at the black tar like stain. “We better change that it's starting to look like geostigma now.” Zack watched Cloud stand up and walk into the bathroom.Cloud opened the medicine cabinet, he had forgotten how Zack stored things and hoped there was some kind of order to it.
Luckily for him, there was some semblance of order, mixed with the random condoms and lubricants on the same shelf. Nice to know if Zack got to injured during his bedroom activities there was always a first aid kit on the same shelf. Right next door to where he kept his perversions in plain sight so everyone who opened said medicine cabinet could see. Cloud pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head. The logic of a seventeen year old mind. He picked up a fresh bandage roll from the small first aid section. “Imagine if they got even a sample of geostigma here and now imagine what Hojo could do with it.” Zack called out to him. Cloud hated to think about that. He shut the medicine cabinet. He stopped suddenly, he could see clearly. His eyes had not changed at all, even in this time travel excursion and he looked down at himself. Fifteen year old body but strong enough to wield a broadsword... or two, with mako colored eyes. There would be questions now he realised it.Cloud walked back into the lounge with the bandage in hand.
“Zack neither of us can go near Hojo.” Cloud stated. “That's a given.” Zack commented. “The guy is a nut job.” Cloud shook his head at Zack, obviously he hadn't clicked because the changes to his body on the outside was only the geostigma and age. The inside though. “No Zack. We're in our bodies right? Well I am... The tests he did.” Cloud watched Zack for a moment, Zack was blank faced for a moment. It was like Cloud was watching the cogs turning and he was close to spelling it out to Zack. Then it was like the lights went on. “The S cells.” Zack stated.“Right Hojo even though he hasn't done it yet. He would know his handy work.” Cloud walked up to Zack crouching down.
Cloud pulled the old bandage off dumping it to the side in a container for disposal, then he began cleaning up the geostigma on Zack's arm. He was almost nostalgic about it, but only due to the fact it reminded him of the times he spent with Denzel. They really couldn't be here too long. Tifa, Denzel, Marlene they would all be worried about him. Cloud dumped the wipes in the container then he began wrapping the fresh bandage round Zack's arm.Zack looked at Cloud. “Maybe it's just you though, I was dead after all.”
He knew that wasn't the case any more. He had a body, this body was his body, even though reversed back into a minor status. It was still his. The S cells were there he knew they were. Cloud looked at him. “Lets hope so, especially if Angeal gets you checked out tomorrow.” Zack frowned. “Don't remind me. I gotta get rid of this before then. They can't have a sample of geostigma not now.” Cloud tied the bandage off. Zack could see the blonde was thinking. He tapped Cloud on the cheek with his fingers. That was Cloud trying to think of a plan of escape. “Cloudy if I get busted, or something. Whatever happens, keep going okay do the mission. I'll be okay. You just get the location of this energy then get home and live your life.” Cloud let out an audible breath and Zack saw the roll of those blue eyes. It was obvious Cloud was irritated at something he said. “Cloud?” “First you apologise for putting me through it the first time of trying to live. Now you're trying to do it again.” Cloud shot him a dark look. Zack slapped his forehead. “Sorry. I meant well just you know do your thing back there live your life for you ya know?” “And leave you behind?” Zack shook his head. “I doubt Aerith would leave us both stranded here. Because I don't wanna do Nibelhiem again... seriously I think I'd go crazy before Sephiroth. And if I had to do it again I'd be ready to impale Genesis on the masamune myself before he opened his insane mouth.”Cloud looked at Zack, after their conversation before about not changing anything, Zack seemed to fall into wanting to do it anyway. He guessed he couldn't really blame Zack.
He was far closer to the entire thing, to Sephiroth, or he would be. “Zack no matter what happens tomorrow. Do NOT tell Angeal about Genesis' plans.” Zack looked at him. “I think tomorrow I'll be more worried about them sticking a needle in my arm to draw blood.” Cloud hoped that it was the case.Zack then looked at him. “Speaking of tomorrow, I thought we were meeting up tomorrow. Why did you come here? Making sure you remembered where I was?”
Zack saw Cloud blush before the blonde cleared his throat. Obviously it was something embarrassing to him. “Yes and no. I don't actually have clothes that fit.” “Oh. Um I don't think your close to my size, it would look like a tent on you.” Zack stated. “Oh wait. I still kept the clothes I came to Midgar in when I was fifteen... Sorry I apologise in advance it's not your normal thing.” He jumped up heading to his room. “So long as it's not flannel or plaid I'll be fine.” Cloud called out to him.Zack walked into his old bedroom, he looked round it quickly taking in the bearings.
The old poster of his favourite rock group along with the centre fold of the first skin mag Kunsel gave him. Both were plastered to the back of his door. The 35 inch LED screen bracketed to the wall opposite the foot of his bed. Next to it was a hip height set of drawers Angeal bought him when he advanced to 2nd Class. Zack opened the bottom drawer it was where he kept his sentimental stuff from home or whatever else his parents sent him. He pulled out the top and looked at it. He knew Cloud would face palm upon seeing it. The other two parts to the ensemble weren't to bad. “Zaaack...” Cloud's warning voice came from the doorway. Zack turned round and held up the shirt to Cloud standing there. “Um yeah-” “Zack just no.” Cloud stated pointing at the shirt. The blue-violet shirt wasn't bad in colour. It was just the pattern on it. Several waves and surf boards mixed with bright palm trees were decorated all over the shirt in a typical Costa Del Sol tourist beach shirt.Zack held up the light grey muscle top that he had worn that day with it and the dark coloured jeans.
“I'll take those two but that, that... thing can stay here.” Cloud motioned at the brightly decorated shirt. Zack grinned. “Yeah no one told me they didn't dress like that in the city. Sorry it's not more formal but they are pretty physical on you on the first day try outs. So these two should do okay. Just no half skirt thing.” He pointed to Cloud's waist. “It's a duster.” Cloud corrected him. Zack grinned. “Yeah well good luck to you anyway not that you'll need it.” He handed over the dark coloured jeans and muscle top.~*~*~*~
Zack was woken up in the morning by a knock on his bedroom door and he pulled the blanket over his head.
“Five more minutes Cloud.” “Who is this Cloud?” A voice that was oh so very familiar but not Cloud's asked. Zack sat up suddenly. He blinked for a moment he was looking at Sephiroth standing in his doorway. “Wait... what? Seph?” He must have looked confused. “Angeal has possible new recruits to evaluate. I'm to take you to the doctor.” Sephiroth didn't look to thrilled about the idea of playing chaperone to make sure he went. Zack nodded his head slowly. “A normal doctor though right? Not Hojo?”Sephiroth raised a brow. He knew there had been gossip about Hojo's mentality amongst the cadets, but Zack actually sounded concerned.
“No, not Hojo.” Sephiroth confirmed. He watched Zack's shoulders slump in relief. The look of panic had been a familiar expression only one he'd seen in himself back in the day. He knew it then at that very moment, Zack's fear of the doctor was a real fear, one he had felt a long time ago when the man could still hurt him. Angeal mentioned it, that Zack was different. That he was keeping something a secret.Sephiroth wasn't one for ignoring that which was obvious. He was Zack's superior after all.
So he just opened his mouth and asked. “Zack. Is there something you're keeping from Angeal?” Zack raised a brow at him. “Seph, you're you right, you're not gunna try and carve me in half or anything?” Sephiroth wasn't used to dealing with teenagers, he was still trying to adjust to how casually Zack was treating him. Most of them always stared in awe, but Zack, acted like he knew him. They barely crossed paths or even spoke. But Zack spoke to him like they were friends. “I assure you I will not harm you.” Sephiroth replied. Zack looked down. “I'm not who I was a couple of days ago. I know I could definitely almost probably take you.”Sephiroth raised a brow. Most of the cadets when they said that it was pure cocky attitude, he knew the mannerisms. But this. There was nothing cocky about Zack's mannerisms. In fact he looked so calm when he said it. He even looked sad as if he was reminded of something painful.
“I agree you are not the same, Angeal and Genesis have noticed.” Sephiroth stated. He walked up to the bed and sat down on the chair beside the bed. He was not good at this communication thing. But his own curiosity was slightly intrigued as how someone who was seventeen could have matured so much in only a couple of days. “They noticed.” Zack bit his lips. “Seph. I know about you, I know what Hojo did or does to you.” Sephiroth looked at Zack, the teenager looked upset at the thought. “I wish I had known earlier. I'm sorry for what he put or is putting you through.” The speech was familiar. He remembered Angeal saying the same thing before adding that Hollander had done something of the same thing to him. “Do you now?” Sephiroth questioned. “Because I remember what it was like to be strapped to that table.” Zack spoke and looked at him. “I'm not the same Zack you guys know because I've already done this before. And when you're gone, guess who Hojo carves up next?”Sephiroth looked at Zack. He didn't need to guess. That look said it all.
Hojo had started on Angeal's student and he frowned a little. But what did Zack have that could have piped Hojo's curiosity. “You?” “Yeah. He's done something weird to me Seph.” Sephiroth glanced to the bandage. “You want to avoid ShinRa doctors?” Zack nodded his head. “Please. Do you know someone? Someone that Angeal can be happy that I went to see.” Those mako blue eyes were looking at him and Sephiroth understood the puppy reference now. It was like trying to say no to a defenceless animal. “Through the silver elite fanclub I do.” Sephiroth stated. Zack blinked. “Wait you actually talk to them? Aren't they kinda obsessive scary stalkerish?” “Not all, there is this one fan. She is in all of our fanclubs, but she is also a doctor who can help us out under the table so to speak.” Sephiroth stated. He stood up. “Get dressed I'll take you to her.”~*~*~*~
Zack was following Sephiroth out the back exit for ShinRa an exit he hadn't been shown until he hit first, which wasn't just yet.
He looked at Seph as the General opened a car door and motioned for Zack to get in. He looked at Sephiroth before sliding in the backseat and Sephiroth got in the car with him closing the door. He gave the name to the driver who nodded. Then he pushed a button sliding the soundproof screen up. “You need to tell me what Hojo did to you before we see her, so when she contacts me of any anomalies I can assure her it's normal.” Sephiroth stated. “Everything Hojo did?” Zack asked staring at him.Sephiroth raised a brow as Zack looked away quickly.
“Whatever he put you through, know that I've already been there. Many years and many times before you. I will not tell Angeal if that is what you are worried about.” He knew Angeal would not approve if he found out his student was Hojo's puppet as well. “Jenova.” Zack said her name so calmly, the fact that he even knew her name was a surprise to Sephiroth. Zack knew his mother's name, the only name Hojo had given him when he asked about who she was. “I have her cells in me, I have your cells in me. I was over exposed to Mako. Felt like it was four years. I'm sure he did other things, but I don't know what else he pumped me full of.” “Jenova...” Sephiroth spoke. “Your mother's name.” Zack whispered. “Trust me the woman is one hella scary bitch.” “You've met her?” Sephiroth frowned. “I was told she died.” Zack shook his head. “Hojo lied to you Seph. I shouldn't tell you this. But Jenova is not your mother. Her cells were implanted in to the woman who was your birth mother.”Sephiroth raised a brow, if Angeal was right about his student, he had trouble hiding anything from them, or keeping it a secret. He just couldn't. The tell tale signs Angeal has said were obvious.
Either Angeal was lying, or in two days Zack had managed to learn to lie with a skilled proficiency. He didn't believe it was possible. Hojo tests or not. “I suppose you know her name.” Sephiroth stated. The look on Zack's face. It was like he realised something suddenly. He shook his head quickly and Sephiroth knew then Zack was lying, it was obvious, the broken eye contact that formed suddenly. Zack pretending to be interested in something else. Something of the invisible nature on his lap. “If you do not wish to tell me then that is fine.” Sephiroth stated. “I want to. Seph I do, but I've already, I've probably destroyed the existence of Edge just by saying what I have already to you.” Zack pinched the bridge of his nose. He was annoyed with himself. Sephiroth was able to read that part of the teenager's body language. “Zack,” He didn't even need to finish. “Lucretia! Her name was Lucretia! AndI'veprobably just slaughteredNibelhiemmyself byjustsayingthat outloudtoyou!” The outburst was sudden and most of it all in one breath. Sephiroth sat back in his seat, he was watching Zack carefully. “This is our secret then.” He would question Zack about the significance of the village later. Zack nodded his head. “I'd rather it that way.”~*~*~*~
Sephiroth was standing in the small room. He was looking at Zack's arm.
The infection exposed to his eyes, it was a black substance, that had the consistency of tar. It did not look pleasant to deal with, yet Zack seemed okay with it. He didn't seem to be in pain as the samples were scraped from his arm. “What every you do, don't touch it with your own hands, I know it reacts to specially selected humans.” Zack was warning the nurse as she left the room with the Petri dish. “What do you mean specially selected people?” Sephiroth asked. Zack couldn't even look at him at that moment. “People that she wanted to invite. The original infection it hit Cloud, Denzel several others in the slums, it even got, I mean it might get Rufus.” “Your strand is not the original infection?” Sephiroth asked. Zack shook his head. “This strand it seemed was reserved for escapees. Like myself, maybe the president or Scarlet. I shouldn't even be in the same building as the president right now. Who knows how it'll react upon being near him.” “She wanted to invite? Escapees?” Sephiroth raised a brow. Everything Zack was saying now it wasn't making much sense in the slightest. 'I believe he's referring to me, my dear boy.' Sephiroth went quiet. That voice that he heard on occasion. Only in moments of pure anger directed at the company. But he wasn't angry with the company, she responded to his confusion about Zack.Sephiroth didn't say anything, he couldn't, Zack was saying more than he should, he could read that from the teenager's body language.
“Can we go soon? I don't think I should be here.” He could hear it in Zack's voice he was mentally hating on telling him the things he had. “Not long now.” Sephiroth replied. When the doctor returned. She looked at Sephiroth.
“Zack. Can I get you to go to the nurse to get a bandage put on that?” The teenager nodded and slid off the table where he sat and walked out of the room. Sephiroth shut the door. “And?” “He's not lying. There is massive amounts of Mako in his system. It's more than I've seen since you first came to see me.” She held up the chart and handed it over to him. “This is the results. I haven't sugar coated it either. He should be in a coma.” Sephiroth's eyes skimmed the paper. He let out a breath. “My cells.” He could see them marked down. He wasn't dense enough to not learn his own celluar structure after the numerous tests Hojo did on him. “Your cells, in massive quantities, and something else. What ever it is. It's foreign. Very foreign.” Sephiroth was looking at the other cellular structure, he could only assume it was her cellular structure. “Will he be okay?” “He seems fully functional, all motor uses and reflexes are fine. He's a normal healthy seventeen year old. Save for the-” “Enhancements.” Sephiroth finished. She nodded her head. “Whoever did this to him, knew enough about the human body and those exposed to SOLDIER training to make it almost invisible.” She glanced to the door. “That infection though, that has your DNA all through it. Altered slightly, but it's there.” “Are you saying I'm the fault he's sick?” Sephiroth asked. She shook her head. “Unless you know how to make an infection out of your body's essence then no. I would say you know who is probably at fault.” She gave Sephiroth a gentle pat on the arm. “Take him back I'll see if I can find a cure. He will need to be watched though to keep the infection to the minimum.” She added. Sephiroth knew a 2nd taking time off wasn't unheard of it was the length he was worried about. “How long?” She smiled as if she knew what he was asking. “Three days tops, your average time to recover from the flu. It won't be noticeable I promise.”~*~*~*~
Zack was stepping out of the nurse's office his arm freshly bandaged. He saw Sephiroth leaving the doctor's office and he handed her a piece of paper and left it at that.
Sephiroth looked at him as he stepped up beside him. “We need to leave before they notice I have not opened up my office for the morning.” Zack nodded his head slowly. “Okay.”When they were back in the car and the sound proof screen was back up. Sephiroth finally spoke to him again. “I am to watch you for three days.”
Zack was staring at Seph he knew he was. “Oh boy.” He knew Cloud would not like that at all. Even if this was pre bat shit mental Seph, it was Seph and Cloud would not, he could not forget what Sephiroth did. Even though technically he hadn't done it yet, and possibly he wouldn't now. Because of an accidental slip of the tongue. “But if you have to be in your office and she said for you to watch me-” “If you distract me from my work I will not think twice about forking you off onto Genesis.” Zack held his hands up in surrender. “I'll be good. I swear! Because if I hear loveless again I'll end up destroying Midgar while trying to get him to shut up.” Zack saw the small smirk on the corner of Sephiroth's lips. He'd almost forgotten Seph and Angeal had to put up with it first. “So for three days it's just you and me...” Zack asked. Sephiroth nodded. “In your office?” Zack queried. Another nod. “Alone?” Zack added.Sephiroth raised a brow looking at Zack.
“Don't you think people would start asking why?” Zack bit his lip. “Like they might think I'm your butt buddy or something.” He added. “Not that I have a thing against that kind of thing, but that in saying I've never done that kind of thing before so-” Sephiroth held up his hand to silence Zack before he pinched the bridge of his nose. He was beginning to understand why Angeal needed quiet time at the end of his day. Really beginning to understand.~*~To Be Continued~*~
