Is he going to make it? Zack sighed as he glanced at his watch, it was already a few minutes till four a.m. and the SOLDIER was beginning to think maybe the blonde slept in. But no sooner than the thought crossed his mind he heard the gym doors open with a loud creak and the echo of footsteps on the floor. Turning to the sound Zack grinned.
“Good morning Spike!” He called across the room.
Cloud continued to walk over to the other, hair a complete mess and eyes partially opened. It looked as if he had just woken up…which he probably did.
“Good?” Cloud asked once he reached Zack, “Right.”
“Oh come on,” Zack started while stretching, “early morning is the best part of the day. Why sleep it all away?”
Cloud blinked lazily as he listened to Zack. Was he crazy!? Cloud couldn’t help but think this was evil, waking up at three something in the morning just to meet in the gym at four to train! He was starting to wonder if his muscles would even allow him to do anything so early in the morning.
“Is this part of my punishment?” Cloud asked while rubbing at his eyes.
Zack couldn’t help but laugh at the innocence in Cloud’s voice. “Not at all,” he replied with a smile, “come on shake it off. You got to wake up, you have to be alert, not groggy or anything okay?” He explained trying to be serious for a moment. He could easily get side tracked when around the younger boy but he had to make sure to stay focused.
“Okay,” Cloud said with a yawn causing Zack to frown.
“Where did you guys leave off in your class?” The SOLDIER asked while crossing his arms over his chest.
“Mm,” the blonde began while swaying slightly, “just perfecting our offense and defense.”
“Alright,” Zack began with a nod before reaching into the pocket of his sweatpants. “Heads or tails?”
“What?” Cloud asked still trying to wake up fully.
“Heads your offense, tails your defense, “ Zack explained before tossing a coin into the air and catching it before placing it flat on the back of his hand, “and it’s heads!”
“Offense?” He asked while glancing from the coin to Zack.
“Yep! Don’t hold back okay? Give me everything you’ve got!” Zack began with a grin.
Cloud started to speak but closed his mouth when he realized what he was saying. Asking a first class SOLDIER if they were sure was probably a stupid thing to do. So with a nod he got into a fighting stance like he had with Jin the other day.
“I’m not going to fight you back, I’m just going to dodge or block,” Zack added while waiting for Cloud to make a first move.
Cloud frowned, Zack didn’t even look like he was readying himself for an attack, just merely standing there as if nothing were going on. He’s sure of himself. It looked like the other wasn’t really paying attention so Cloud took the opportunity to take a shot at him, but Zack casually stepped aside and dodged the hit. Taking another swing and a kick here and there Zack dodged all of them with ease just like the first one.
The cadet paused for a moment, he was fully awake now and tried to concentrate on the other and again tried to hit him but still didn’t come close to touching him. Zack was fast, but the thing was that it didn’t look like he was really trying hard to avoid any of the blonde’s attacks and Cloud on the other hand was trying desperately to land at least one hit. He was starting to become frustrated after about half an hour of not being able to get the SOLDIER.
“Cloud,” Zack began when he noticed the upset and annoyed look on the boys face, “you have all the moves down but you need to increase your speed and stop thinking so hard about what you’re going to do. It’ll just come to you. Let’s switch, you play defense now okay?”
Cloud barely had time to nod before Zack had swung at him. Jumping back blue eyes widened and Zack was right back in front of him throwing another hit which the blonde dodged. But he didn’t have time to try and avoid the foot sweep and in an instant he was flat on his back.
“Ow,” he mumbled while staring up at the ceiling.
“Yeah, definitely need to increase your speed,” Zack explained while looking down at the cadet with a grin and extending his hand to help the other up.
Cloud glared before sitting up, completely ignoring the hand that was offered to him. He may not admit it but he really hated it when he would lose in any type of fight, even if it was just training or sparing with someone. “I can do that,” he replied evenly.
“I know you can!” Zack exclaimed while ruffling the cadets hair.
Cloud’s eyes widened and he jerked his head away quickly.
Zack couldn’t help but laugh. This whole training thing was going to be really fun.

“I’m exhausted!” Kyo whined while stumbling in through the door and dropping his gym bag onto the ground along with his backpack. “I wish I was suspended too so I could lounge around all day.”
Cloud sighed and glanced at his roommate. He was lying down almost falling asleep before Kyo had entered. Yeah he was suspended but his day had nothing to do with any kind of lounging. He had practiced with Zack for a few hours in the morning before Sergeant Okuda came to his room and delivered his new “task” for the day which involved washing the company cars, and polishing them perfectly. It wasn’t as bad as scrubbing the floors (which Sergeant hadn’t found out about him ditching thank god) but it was still a difficult task when you realized exactly how many company cars there were in the damn place.
Zack had told him to let him know if they tried to assign him anymore work but Cloud decided not too. He didn’t want to whine and cry to Zack every time something bad happened and expect him to bail him out, he had to stand on his own two feet sometimes.
“I’m going to take a long hot shower,” Kyo added while pulling off his shirt and tossing it onto the floor along with his bags.
“Kyo,” Cloud grumbled while pulling his blanket closer to him. He hated how Kyo would just throw anything and everything on the ground. He might be considered strange for being a guy and being neat and clean….but he was. He hated walking into a messy room and with a roommate like Kyo it happened all the time and he would be the one to clean it up, but he was too tired to even try to clean up anything now.
“I’ll get it later don’t start crying,” the taller boy teased before stepping into the bathroom and closing the door behind him. Cloud heard the shower water start and slowly closed his eyes, the sound of the water soothing and the warmth of the blanket around him. He started to drift off when a knock sounded at the door. Opening his eyes lazily he glanced at the bathroom door and then at the front door. He was too comfortable to get up but Kyo was in the shower…maybe they would just go away. The knocks came a few more times and the blonde closed his eyes trying to go back to sleep. It was probably one of Kyo’s friends anyways wondering if he wanted to go out for drinks or something, and honestly Cloud didn’t like Kyo’s friends and they didn’t like him so…yeah. But the knocking just kept going, not getting any louder or longer but just knock after knock until it finally got to the cadet and he reluctantly stepped out of bed and across the room to the door pulling it open angrily, ready to tell any of Kyo’s friends to fuck off!
“What are you doing here?” Cloud asked changing his expression from annoyed to curious.
“It’s nice to see you too,” Zack joked while leaning against the doorframe, “were you sleeping?”
“No, not yet,” the blonde started while shaking his head, “was starting too though.”
“It’s still early kid! I thought guys your age like partied all night long!” the SOLDIER said with a grin.
Yeah well to party I guess you have to have some friends right? “Yeah well,” Cloud began while looking to the ground. He didn’t want to get into that whole thing right now…or ever.
“Come on!” Zack said while stepping back.
“What? Where?” The boy asked while looking up from the ground to Zack.
“There’s a bar like a few blocks from here, usually a lot of people go there on Friday nights!” Zack explained.
“A bar!?” Cloud asked, eyes widening. “Zack I can’t go to a bar I’m only fifteen!”
Zack chuckled, “you don’t get it do you?”
The blonde felt himself blush feeling completely confused now. He hated not knowing what was going on or feeling completely naïve about things.
“Use the name Shinra to your advantage, it has its perks. I think I learned that the first month I came to Midgar. You can do anything that way.”
“Oh,” Cloud replied as Zack’s grin widened.
“So come on It’ll be fun!”
The blonde had been so tired when he got back earlier from cleaning all those cars and sleeping in a nice warm bed sounded perfect, but now with Zack standing there in front of him smiling, going out seemed to be an okay idea too.
“Alright,” Cloud said before motioning for Zack to come in. The SOLDIER stepped in and glanced around the room.
“I guess you’ve forgotten what it looks like in these rooms,” Cloud began with a smile as he put on his shoes.
“Actually they’re just like I remembered them…I’m so glad I don’t stay here anymore!” He joked with a wink.
“Gee thanks,” Cloud replied with a roll of his eyes before slipping on his jacket. Walking over to the bathroom door he tapped on it lightly. “Kyo I’m going out for a bit okay!”
“What!?” Kyo shouted back.
“I said I’m going out for a bit, I’ll be back later!” Cloud shouted louder.
Zack smiled as he continued to look around the room. His eyes fell onto a small shelf by the bed that he assumed was Clouds. On the shelf were a few pictures. One with a woman with blonde hair and blue eyes that resembled Cloud’s, another with a girl who looked about fourteen or so with long dark brown hair.
“Ready?” Cloud asked while stepping over a pile of Kyo’s clothes.
“Yep!” Zack replied tearing his gaze away from the pictures and back to Cloud.
They left from the barracks and hoped onto Zack’s motorcycle and headed towards the bar. It really wasn’t that far at all, they arrived shortly and stepped inside, Zack saying hi to a few people and Cloud glancing around cautiously. He didn’t like some of the looks he was getting from the people inside. They took a seat at a table and Zack grinned at the other.
“Relax Cloud,” he began with a laugh.
“I am,” the blonde replied defensively.
“Okay okay,” Zack said with a wave of his hand, “I’m just saying I know it’s a different environment for you.”
Cloud glanced around at the SOLDIERS who were obviously drunk and way too loud with their annoying laughter with girls sitting next to them that were hanging onto their every words.
“Hey Zack!” A girl chimed while walking over to the two. She wore a denim mini skirt and red heels and a tight red t-shirt with a black apron over it. Her brunette hair was pulled back into a ponytail and she was wearing way too much make-up.
“Hey Tanya,” Zack greeted her with a smile, “this is my friend Cloud.”
“Nice to meet ya!” She said to Cloud with a megawatt smile.
“Same here,” Cloud replied with a smile, though he was trying to get over the fact that she looked more like a clown than anything else.
“What’ll you have? “ She asked turning to Zack.
“A beer for me and…I guess a coke?” Zack asked unsure as he looked at Cloud who looked completely horrified.
“No, not a coke,” Cloud started while glancing to Tanya, “two beers.”
“Coming right up boys! I’ll bring some buffalo wings too you guys look hungry,” she added before winking at Zack and turning to walk away.
“A coke Zack!” Cloud practically screamed once Tanya walked away.
“I’m sorry,” Zack started with a laugh.
“Really make me feel like a kid,” the blonde basically pouted while leaning back in his chair.
“No I didn’t mean it like that,” Zack began, “I just…I mean I didn’t know if you drank before and I wasn’t sure if you would want to start now.”
“I can try it!” Cloud said while glaring at the other.
“You’re right, you can,” Zack said with a grin. It was too funny in his eyes to see Cloud get so upset when anyone treated him as a kid in any type of way. Zack couldn’t help it though, Cloud was too innocent and he was only fifteen after all.
“Tanya,” Cloud started while looking in the direction that she had walked down, “she…likes you?”
Zack sighed before placing his elbows on the table, “I guess…but I mean she likes everybody. Or, every SOLDIER anyways. She’s a nice girl but not for me. She knows that though, she just likes to flirt with me.”
Not knowing why but Cloud felt a little relieved from that answer. Whether it was because he hoped Zack wouldn’t date a clown or because he was glad that….he shook his head before he could even finish that thought. What was with him?
“Here you go cuties!” Tanya said while walking back with a tray and setting down their beers and the basket of buffalo wings. “You need anything else just shout okay?” She was off in a minute as she greeted a few other SOLDIERS that had just entered smiling and laughing with them. She really did flirt with all of them.
Zack opened his beer and took a swig before placing it back on the table and looking to Cloud who was trying to get the cap off the top of his.
“You need,” Zack started before Cloud shot him a look.
“I got it,” he mumbled while twisting the cap as hard as he could before it finally popped off. He lifted it to his mouth and then pulled it away and scrunched his face. It smelled horrible. But he took a drink anyways once he caught the amused look on the others face.
“So?” Zack asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Eh,” Cloud began, “it’s okay.”
“It’s something you acquire a taste for,” Zack explained while taking another drink.
The blonde placed the bottle back on the table before grabbing one of the buffalo wings from the basket. “Who do you usually come here with?”
“Uh just some of the guys, I try to get Seph to come but he doesn’t like this sort of thing…he came once and it wasn’t pretty so I don’t bother him about it anymore,” Zack explained while going for the basket.
“Seph? As in Sephiroth!?” Cloud asked looking straight at the SOLDIER.
“Yeah,” Zack replied casually.
“I,” the blonde began, “you like talk to him!? I haven’t even seen him before, I mean at the beginning at orientation and everything but he was on stage and I was all the way in the back. It’s like he doesn’t even exist or something.”
Zack chuckled before taking another sip of his beer, “No he exists. But I mean he’s the leader over the whole Military branch in Shinra. He’s a busy guy. I don’t even get to see him that much as of lately.”
“Still,” Cloud began while taking a drink of beer, “you’ve seen him. You like know him. That’s so…” he quickly stopped talking. He didn’t want to seem like some fan crazed idiot.
“You want to meet him?” Zack asked casually keeping his gaze on the blonde.
“What?” Cloud asked while looking back to Zack.
“Yeah, you want to meet him?”
YES! “That would be…yeah I would like to,” the blonde tried to reply as calmly as he could.
“Okay,” the SOLDIER replied with a nod as if it weren’t a big deal. But to Cloud it was a very big deal. However if Zack was acting cool about it then Cloud decided to do the same, so he just took another drink and nodded.
“Is that girl your girlfriend?” Zack asked.
“Huh?” Cloud asked looking at the other completely confused. What girl? And how random was that?
Zack smiled, “back in your room I saw a few pictures on your shelf. The blonde I’m assuming was your mom and the other I thought was your girlfriend.”
“Oh,” Cloud started with a nod understanding now what Zack was talking about. He didn’t even realize that Zack had seen the pictures in his room. “Yeah the blonde is my mom and the other she…she’s just a friend of mine from back home.”
“You two must’ve been good friends,” Zack added.
Uh no. She barely really knew me and yet I still have this huge crush on her. Yeah, it doesn’t really make sense does it? She only seemed to show interest when I was about to come to Midgar and gave me the picture to remember her by. “Not really,” the blonde decided to say. “I just…kind of had a crush on her,” he admitted before taking another drink. Either he felt really comfortable around Zack now or the alcohol was starting to get to him.
“Ah I see,” Zack began with a grin.
“Don’t!” Cloud started with a smile, “It’s not a big deal. She didn’t even like me so it was a hopeless thing from the beginning.”
“Didn’t like you? Why the hell not?” Zack asked while setting down his now empty beer.
“I…wasn’t too popular back in my town and she was…we were two way different kind of people,” Cloud explained with a hint of sadness in his voice, “but it’s okay…I don’t think about her as much as I used too.”
“Good,” Zack replied seriously, “you shouldn’t. Crush on somebody whose worthy of it, not some stuck up brat.”
Cloud sighed. Tifa wasn’t stuck up but he always did feel smaller than her. Everyone in town seemed to adore her and all of the boys liked her. She wasn’t mean to him or anything but she also didn’t try to go out of her way to talk to him. Even after her injury when she was in the coma from falling off Mt.Nibel and Cloud got all the blame she never once tried to tell people the real story. Whether she thought they just wouldn’t believe her or not he wasn’t sure, but he still never held it against her even though he got in numerous fights because of it. A lot of his fights were based on her when he thought about it, the other boys telling him to stay away from her because Tifa didn’t need a freak following her around. He wondered if she knew…or cared.
“Want another?” Zack asked pulling him out of his thoughts.
The blonde blinked while looking down to his now empty beer.
Zack had already called Tanya back over and had ordered a few beers along with something else Cloud didn’t know.
“Tonight’s on me,” Zack started once he saw the younger boy pull out his wallet and glance through it.
Cloud raised an eyebrow at the other before receiving a smirk.
“It’s fine. I know what the salary is like when you’re just a cadet. Save your money,” Zack explained just as Tanya set down a few beers and two small shot glasses and filled them up with some type of bluish liquid before placing that bottle on the table also and walking away.
“What’s that?” Cloud asked eyeing the drink…or whatever it was in front of them.
“You can’t live in Midgar and not have tried this,” the SOLDIER began while sliding the shot glass to Cloud, “just down it!”
Glancing at the other skeptically the cadet picked up the small glass and quickly drank it. It burned his throat and chest slightly and left a warm sensation in his stomach. But it still kind of burned more than anything.
“God,” he squeaked out with a slight cough his eyes slightly watering.
“Way to go Spike!” Zack laughed as he pushed the beer towards the blonde, “drink that it’ll help.”
Listening Cloud quickly took a few sips of the beer before placing the bottle back down on the table.
“You never cease to surprise me,” Zack started with a smile.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Cloud asked.
Zack shook his head, “It’s not a bad thing,” he said simply before downing one of the shots seeming not to be affected by it all.
Cloud frowned while filling up his glass with a little more of the blue liquor.
“Whoa,” the SOLDIER started while grabbing the bottle, “what are you doing?”
“I want to try it again,” Cloud said while looking to the other.
“Cloud…those can possibly have you messed up for the whole night. Especially for someone whose never drank before,” Zack explained.
“I’ll be fine,” the blonde replied before downing the second shot. Though he really should’ve listened to the older teen. He didn’t stop at two but had four and had two beers after his first one. He was completely entertaining from that point on. Zack tried to tell him he had enough but Cloud insisted he was fine and only got more drunk.
“We should go,” Zack started while standing up from the table.
“Yeah! It’s late now I think!” Cloud said a little too enthusiastically while trying his best to stand up from the table on wobbly legs. He stood up partially before falling a little and catching himself on the edge of the table.
“You okay kid?” Zack asked walking around the table and placing an arm around the other to help balance him.
“Zack why is the room spinning?” The cadet asked innocently as his eyes went wide.
“No Spike the room is fine,” Zack continued while keeping his arm around the blonde and walking towards the exit.
“Ooohh!” Cloud beamed when they had made it outside, “I get to ride the bike back this time!” He quickly broke away from Zack’s grasp and ran towards the motorcycle trying desperately to swing his leg over it but he couldn’t seem to keep balance long enough to do so.
Zack couldn’t help but laugh. He thought getting a few drinks in Cloud would help loosen him up a bit but he had no idea it would work so well.
“I think tonight I should drive us back,” Zack said with a smile once he reached the other who was still trying to hop onto the bike.
“Zaacckk!” Cloud whined finally deciding to give up. “Fine,” he said while turning to face the other but he turned too quickly and stumbled forward right into the other. The SOLDIER caught him quickly not even budging from his spot. Holding Cloud’s shoulders he pulled back a little.
“Careful,” he said with a grin.
Cloud nodded before completely relaxing against the teen, one of his hands lightly resting against Zack’s chest.
Zack sighed, as he held Cloud close for the moment. It felt good to hold him this way.
“Zack?” Cloud asked not making any motions to pull away.
“Yeah?” He replied softly.
“I think I’m going to be sick,” the blonde confessed while clinging to Zack’s shirt.
Pulling back a little Zack glanced down at Cloud’s face that was completely flushed and he could see the strange look in his eyes. The blonde started to gag but covered his mouth with his hands.
“Don’t hold it in Spike!” Zack said while pulling the cadet near the curb, “just let it out.”
“Gross,” Cloud managed to say in between gags.
“Even more gross if you hurl when were riding back,” Zack added with a look of disgust.
The mental image that the blonde got when he imagined riding back and hurling into the wind was enough to make him even more sick and he let everything out right there. After he coughed a few times before wiping his mouth with his sleeve.
Zack looked away but still kept a close eye on him, “you alright?”
“Ugh,” was the only response that Cloud mumbled as he straightened up.
Zack laughed and placed an arm around his shoulders guiding him back towards the bike, “You think this is bad. You’ll feel worse in the morning.”
The cadet groaned in response before grabbing onto the bike for balance.
“You sit in front, I don’t want you falling off the back,” the SOLDIER explained while helping the boy onto the bike. Once he got Cloud situated he hopped on as well and started up the motorcycle. It was a little difficult to ride with Cloud in front of him but not that much, Cloud didn’t take up much space. They started down the street and Cloud relaxed against the other behind him using him as a substitute of a pillow of some sort. He closed his eyes and let the night air soothe him as they continued down the streets. He must’ve fallen asleep in that short period of time because he woke up to Zack tapping him, the motorcycle parked out front of the barracks.
“Come on Spike were here,” Zack said helping Cloud off the bike.
Nodding wearily Cloud let himself be led back into the barracks and to his room where he searched his pockets for his key and couldn’t seem to find it.
“I don’t know where,” he started lazily while leaning against the door and checking his coat pockets and then his pants pockets.
“Not again with the key thing,” Zack said with a smile, “your roommates here though right?”
“Oh yeah Kyo!” The blonde said a little loudly and turned to pound on the door, “Kyo!”
“Shh Cloud not so loud,” Zack started with a laugh. It was pretty late and even though it was the weekend people still might be asleep.
Knocking softer he tried again, “Kyo!” Cloud began in a hushed whisper.
Zack chuckled before knocking a little louder.
There still wasn’t a response. Maybe his roommate was out?
“I don’t think he’s here,” Zack said while glancing to the blonde.
“He might be out with his idiot friends,” Cloud began while pushing himself away from the door, “he usually is.”
Zack nodded and was about to speak before Cloud stumbled forward against him.
Cloud laughed a little clutching onto Zack’s shirt, “So maybe I can come to your place for awhile until Kyo comes back?” He asked staring wide eyed at the SOLDIER.
No, this wasn’t good. A drunk out of his mind Cloud at his place? Definitely not good. Not that Zack would do anything at all but still the temptation would be there. Cloud was like ten times more cute when he was drunk and the way he kept hanging onto Zack didn’t help at all. But Cloud was his friend first before anything, and if his friend was drunk off his ass then no doubt Zack would take care of him.
“Of course,” Zack replied with a smile looking down to the boy who was still grabbing onto his shirt.
“Okay,” Cloud said mirroring the same smile that Zack had on his face. Pulling himself closer to Zack so that he could steady himself from the spinning room he felt his face heat up from the closeness. Even in his drunken state he felt those strange little things that he had felt the other night. Dropping his head down he wanted to pull away but feared he would fall if he did.
“Cloud?” Zack asked noticing the small blush appear on the boys face before he looked away.
“Yeah?” He replied lifting his head slightly but kept his eyes looking at Zack’s neck instead of his eyes.
“You okay?” the SOLDIER asked placing his hands on the sides of Clouds arms.
The cadet nodded quickly before finally daring to look into Zack’s eyes, “Yeah,” he spoke softly. His breath reeked of alcohol but it didn’t bother Zack at all, what was getting to him was the warmth of the boys breath that he could feel. It was making the situation all to tempting.
“Zack?” Cloud asked still keeping his eyes locked with the others.
“Mm hmm,” Zack replied trying to stay as composed as possible.
“You’re eyes…they’re glowing?” The blonde asked curiously.
Zack smiled, “Yeah, that’s the Mako. Freaky huh?”
Cloud continued to stare in silence for a moment before shaking his head, “No… I like them.”
Zack blinked, that was something he never heard. Most people who weren’t familiar with SOLDIER thought his eyes were scary for the most part. Nobody actually ever said they liked them.
“Hey!” Another voice broke in catching both of the boys attention.
“Kyo,” Cloud replied with a tilt of his head before pulling away from Zack and grinning at the other.
“What the,” Kyo started before a smile spread across his face, “holy shit are you drunk Cloud?”
“Shh! I am not!” The blonde shot back which caused Kyo to burst into a fit of laughter.
“Maybe just a little?” Zack offered gaining a sweet smile from the other.
“A little,” Cloud replied with a nod.
“Perfect timing,” Zack started while glancing at Clouds roommate, “Cloud forgot his key.”
“Again?” Kyo asked while opening the door.
The blonde only shrugged before stumbling inside the room then turned back and gave Zack a goofy smile, “goodnight,” he slurred before disappearing farther into the room.
The SOLDIER shook his head before glancing at Kyo, “Sorry hopefully he’ll just fall asleep.”
“Oh no problem sir! I’m sure he will anyways,” Kyo said while standing at attention before glancing into the room to see Cloud already lying on the bed.
“Have a good night,” Zack replied with a nod before turning and walking away. Slightly disappointed that Kyo came back when he did, but he assumed it was probably for the better.
“Cloud you idiot! How do you keep losing your key? I should just tie it around your neck or something,” Kyo joked while walking over to his friend.
“Shut up,” the blonde mumbled as he felt Kyo tug at his shoes.
“You’re going to be so fucked up in the morning. I can’t wait,” the taller boy laughed as he set Cloud’s shoes on the ground and then moved to take his jacket off.
“I’ll be fine,” Cloud mumbled again, sleep slowly overtaking him.
Kyo worked the jacket off the blonde and tossed it on the chair nearby when he heard a small thud. Glancing at the floor he bent down and picked up the object.
Laughing he turned to Cloud, “you dumb ass your key was in your coat pocket the whole time.”
