Nanaki had not expected Vincent to return quite so soon. Actually, he had expected it to be at least a week or two before the gunman returned. Yet here he was in the observatory not a day after he had left. Cloud was still there, not having planned to leave until a few days hence, and from his baffled expression Nanaki could tell that the swordsman-turned-deliveryman was just as surprised.
“I trust you have discovered something?” Nanaki said mildly.
Vincent plunked a small orb on the kitchen table. The orange-furred feline looked at the sphere, his single yellow eye scruntinizing it. “Materia?”
Cloud’s mako eyes narrowed in suspicion. “Vincent, what —”
“This,” Vincent interrupted, his voice a low growl, “is what remains of the thing that was masquerading as Cid Highwind.”
“What the hell...?” Cloud breathed, his eyes widening. “It’s — it’s materia, dammit!”
“What materia could possibly create such a farce?” Nanaki wondered, poking it with a razor-sharp claw.
“I believe it is a Clone materia,” Vincent replied, folding his arms. “Shin-Ra used it as a security system. Junon contained such a mechanism. However, Shin-Ra’s version could do little more than mimic the object of the spell.”
“Clone materia...” Cloud shook his head sadly, reminded of Hojo’s cloning experiments. “But then how did this materia mimic Cid?”
“It is not a pure Clone materia, but rather a combination of Clone and Sense. The latter’s purpose was to create a proper copy.”
“A combination of materia? How is that possible?” Nanaki questioned, turning his amber eye on the gunman. “And how do you know this?”
Vincent’s crimson gaze narrowed. “My sources are irrelevant. Suffice to say this is a deliberate creation made to pose as Cid.”
Cloud’s heart sank. “So if that wasn’t Cid... then where is he?”
“Elsewhere, evidently. Obviously, he is being held somewhere.” Vincent frowned. “How did Shera die?”
Nanaki blinked at the apparent non sequitur, then sighed as he realized it was completely relevant. “She was left in countless pieces, but the investigation determined that someone used one of Cid’s spears to kill her.”
“Not someone. The clone did it. It is likely that Cid has been taken by the clone’s maker, though the purpose is unknown.” Vincent let out a sigh. “I can find him, but it will take time.” He frowned when he remembered something. “Cloud, I need to use your phone.”
Cloud’s brow furrowed. “Why?”
“I no longer have one, but I need to make a call.” For the first time since he’d lost his, Vincent regretted not having a phone.
Accepting that, Cloud handed over his phone. Vincent had to put the numbers in three times before he got them all right, then held the device up to his ear. A few short rings later, the other person picked up. “Who is this?” a man asked, his voice wary.
Vincent’s lips curled slightly. His friend might have been old, but he hadn’t forgotten his training. “Verdot, I need information on the Junon security system, particularly the cloning mechanism and all applicable data on it.”
“You asshole,” Verdot growled, but Vincent knew he meant it kindly. “You expect me to just call that up out of thin air?”
“You have your ways. Have it sent to the Shanghai Inn in Rocket Town.”
“The next time I see you I’m going to kick your scrawny ass.”
Vincent couldn’t help but snort. “Sure, if you manage three steps without your cane.”
“Motherfucker. It’ll be there in two days, and I swear you’re going to repay me for this.”
“We’ll see.” Vincent closed the phone and handed it back to Cloud, who wore an expression of utter disbelief. Nanaki’s eye had widened considerably. “Is there a problem?”
“Who was that?” Cloud asked, his expression becoming slightly suspicious. “And how the hell can he get that kind of information?”
“Never underestimate the Turks’ skill in reconnaissance.”
Cloud looked baffled. “I thought Reno and them were the only Turks left.” His eyes narrowed. “Are you working for them?”
“Tch. Am I wearing a suit? Verdot was my partner when I was a Turk; furthermore, he is in my debt.”
Nanaki did a good impression of raising an eyebrow. “That long ago...? Rather old for a Turk.”
“Turks do not retire. He is old, but can gather information far better than Rufus’s Turks. But this line of conversation is wasting time.” Vincent turned and brusquely strode towards the door, not bothering to bid them farewell.

Author's notes: I love Vincent/Verdot interaction, especially post-game. (For those of you who don't know, he was Vincent's colleague way back when and he's the commander through the bulk of Before Crisis; he didn't die after that so I figure Vincent found him after FFVII. But that's just me.)
