Head…hurts. What the hell…
“Wake up sleepy head!” Kyo shouted once he noticed the blonde shifting slightly in bed.
Opening his eyes slowly the cadet quickly closed them tightly. “Oh god,” he mumbled while pulling his pillow over his head.
“Oh yeah you probably don’t want that right in your face right now,” his roommate began with a laugh while walking over and shutting the curtains that was letting in the bright sun.
Cloud winced from his friend’s laughter that sounded a million times louder than usual and was only adding to the sharp pain that was hitting him in the head every second. “Do you have to be so loud?” The blonde mumbled while pulling back the pillow a little.
Kyo only laughed more before sitting on the edge of the younger boys bed. The slight movement in the bed made Cloud feel dizzy so he gripped the blankets tighter trying to steady himself from rolling out of bed.
“I can’t believe you got hammered when you were out with Zack! I would’ve been way to scared to do that. I mean I wouldn’t want to do something stupid in front of him or anything,” the brunette explained with a grin leaning back further on the bed.
Zack? What are you… “What do you mean?” Cloud asked slightly worried while pulling the pillow off completely and trying to sit up before he eased himself back onto the bed.
“Easy ,” Kyo began before pointing down next to the bed, “I got you that bucket there in case anything decides to come up. Try not to miss it this time like you did last night.”
Cloud frowned before running a hand over his face. Last night, his headache, the hurl bucket next to his bed, he could barely remember anything clearly but bits and pieces. “What exactly happened last night?” He asked with a bit of hesitance in his voice.
“You don’t remember?” Kyo began with a grin, “you really were wasted. You went out with Zack, I don’t know what all you had to drink but when he brought you back here last night you were drunk off your ass! It was funny as hell!”
“Shit,” Cloud groaned while closing his eyes tightly. What the hell did he do when he was out with Zack? He couldn’t remember anything besides small shot glasses, hurling at the curb…how lovely, and telling Zack that…he thought his eyes were nice? Damn, this couldn’t be happening.
“Oh come on! I’m proud of you! Getting shit faced is like part of the initiation around here!” Kyo began while patting the others knee and rising up from the bed. “Some aspirin should help take away the massive headache that I’m sure you have right now.” Stepping into the bathroom he began to look through the medicine cabinets.
Cloud what the hell is the matter with you? The blonde couldn’t help but scold himself as he thought back to the night before, the thoughts starting to come back to him slowly and painfully. You are an idiot! Drunk or not…ugh, shouldn’t have even went.
“Here you go,” Kyo started while walking back over with a few aspirins and a glass of water.
“Kyo,” Cloud mumbled while lazily opening his eyes and sitting up slowly taking the water and medicine, “promise you’ll never let me drink again.”
“No way! It’s funny when you’re drunk!” Kyo replied with a smile.
“I’m serious!” The blonde snapped. He couldn’t believe he had made such an ass out of himself when he was with Zack. He threw up in front of him and that was just…disgusting. He probably said a lot more stupid things than he could remember, and he only hoped he didn’t give him any more cheesy compliments like “you’re eyes are nice” or whatever the hell he had said. Though, it was true. The first thing Cloud noticed about Zack was his eyes, it was strange. He had seen many SOLDIERS since he had been in Midgar so he was used to the glow in their eyes that they carried but Zack’s were unique in their own way, he didn’t just find the glow captivating but…wait, why the hell was he thinking about his eyes now anyway? Shaking his head to rid the thoughts he quickly popped the aspirin in his mouth before drinking some water.
“Oh you’re one of those bitchy people the next day huh?” Kyo asked with a raised eyebrow as he made his way to his closet.
“Sorry,” Cloud mumbled before tilting his head, “you going somewhere?”
“Yeah,” Kyo replied with a nod, “as much as I would love to stay here and nurse you back to health I’m going out to meet Lana.”
The blonde nodded. Enough said. Lana was only Kyo’s most important thing in life. They weren’t officially a couple, but they would be. Cloud had to listen to Kyo talk about her hours and hours on end like she was the greatest being to ever walk the planet. She was really sweet and pretty, he didn’t have anything against her but anyone would grow tired of hearing about “the way she styled her hair” and how “her smile was so perfect.” He never told Kyo to shut up about her or anything, if he lost interest he would just act like he was listening and really be doing something else. Besides, maybe Kyo didn’t really talk about her that much but just the fact that he talked about her at all reminded the blonde of Tifa, the perfect girl that he would never have…it just sort of hit a sore spot.
“Anyways, just let the medicine do it’s job and rest. You’re not going to be able to do much in this state,” Kyo continued while slipping on his shoes.
Glancing at the clock Cloud rested back against the bed. It was already two in the afternoon, but he didn’t care he was going to take the others advice and just sleep, hopefully when he woke up next his pounding headache would be gone or at least fading.
“See ya later!” Kyo said before exiting out of the room and slamming the door a little too hard for Cloud’s liking. “Sorry!” He shouted through the door.
Grumbling a few profanities and clutching his head the cadet pulled the blankets closer before drifting off to sleep.
************************************************************************
Cracking open an eye he stared at the window. The sun was setting now and wasn’t filling the room with bright light anymore but more of a bluish purple tone. Turning onto his side he heard a knock at the door and then realized that it was the knocking that had woken him up.
“Kyo,” he said into the quiet room and got no response. He must’ve still been out with Lana. Hearing the sound at the door again he pulled the covers over his head. “Go away!” He shouted loud enough to where whoever it was outside could hear. The knocking stopped and Cloud smiled to himself as he closed his eyes.
“Hey you,” he heard a voice speak along with a tap on his arm.
Throwing the blanket off from over his head quickly he was staring eye to eye with Zack.
“How the hell did you get in here?” The blonde asked with a questioning expression on his face. Still a little surprised to see him there.
“The door was unlocked,” Zack replied with a grin, “you said come in.”
“No,” the blonde shook his head, “I said go away.” How the hell do you get come in from go away?
“Oh,” Zack started with a chuckle, “sorry.”
Sighing Cloud leaned back against the pillow eyes trailing over the room that was growing more dark by the minute.
“I wanted to see how you were feeling,” Zack began while sitting on the edge of the bed. “After last night.”
Looking back to Zack Cloud sucked in a breath. The SOLDIERS eyes were even more entrancing in the dark like this. “Better…not one hundred percent,” he replied with a shrug.
“Better is nice,” Zack said with a grin while pushing away some of the blonde spikes away from the others face.
Cloud tensed and leaned back further into the pillow and was glad that it was pretty dark in the room so that Zack wouldn’t see the red tint on his cheeks. His blush deepened when Zack’s hand stayed in the same spot lightly brushing his hair and caressing the side of his face gently.
What the…. “Z, Zack,” the blonde stuttered. This was way too weird all of a sudden.
“Yeah Spike?” the SOLDIER replied, voice lower than usual, his eyes looking directly into the others.
Cloud couldn’t tear his gaze away from the others and felt his heart beat speed up. Why was he getting so nervous all of a sudden?
“Was there something on your mind?” Zack asked, voice still soft as he lowered his face closer to the others.
Cloud wanted to speak, what he was going to say he wasn’t really sure but his voice got caught in his throat. He could feel the soft strands of the others hair tickling his neck and he could feel the warmth of his breath on his skin. His eyes widened completely when Zack closed the distance between them, pressing his lips gently against the others.
********************************************************************
Hitting the ground with a thud Cloud quickly sat up, breathing heavily. What the hell? Looking up at the bed and then down to himself that was now sitting on the floor as a result of him rolling out of bed. Did he just dream about Zack? No no, did he just dream about kissing Zack?
Running a hand over his face he stared at the door that was locked before glancing around the room…no Zack. It had felt so real though. But why…
Smacking his head a few times with his hand he let out a frustrated growl. What the hell was the matter with him? Last he checked he was head over heels for Tifa and hadn’t thought much at all about another person…and a guy? He sighed while leaning back on the ground fully, things were beginning to get complicated since he met Zack. He didn’t know exactly how to explain it but there had been a few times when he felt strange around the SOLDIER, not strange in a bad way but just…he didn’t know. Or maybe he did know…did he?
Closing his eyes he rubbed at his temples, all of the thoughts running through his mind were starting to give him a headache. Sitting up he glanced at the clock on his nightstand. It was just a little before six in the evening and that meant they were serving dinner in the cafeteria. Getting up from the ground he walked over to the closet to grab a pullover. He didn’t bother with a shower or changing his clothes he just planned on going to grab something to eat and then coming back to his room to wallow more. Slipping on his shoes he made his way out of the room and down the hall until he finally reached the cafeteria.
He grabbed a tray and walked over to the counter where the server gave him a strange look eyeing him up and down before placing a plate of food on his tray.
Cloud glared before walking away quickly. Okay yeah he looked like shit at the moment but he didn’t give a damn, besides he could care less what the people there thought about him, they already judged him from the first day they saw him anyways.
Taking a seat at a table far away from the others that was isolated by itself he began to poke at the food on his plate. It didn’t look all that great but he was starving so he started in on it.
He heard a few whistles followed by a couple of laughs before the whistling continued. He looked up abruptly, a few of his unruly spikes falling over an eye. He didn’t look like the nicest person at the moment and was mad as hell to see Jin and his cronies staring at him and snickering before Jin said something to the others that caused them to crack up even louder.
Now was not the time to bother the blonde and if the situation had been different he probably would’ve said something smart back if not going over and punching the other in the face, but of course that wouldn’t be a good idea. One, he was already on suspension and any other problems that he caused would only land him in deeper trouble, and two Jin was probably stronger than him, he didn’t have a problem with that and he would gladly take him on but not with Jin’s two dumb sidekicks. He glanced back down at his tray debating if he should just forget the meal and go back to his room, he seriously didn’t want to deal with Jin and his stupidity at the moment.
“So this is where you are,” Zack’s voice sounded near the blonde.
Cloud tore his gaze from off the tray to the SOLDIER who had pulled up a chair at the table.
“Looks like you could use some company,” Zack began with a grin, “I ran into your roommate earlier, he said you still weren’t feeling too well.”
“Oh,” the blonde began while dropping his eyes back to his tray, “I’m better now.” He wasn’t planning on seeing Zack right now, not so soon after his dream. And now with the SOLDIER right there next to him he couldn’t help but think of it.
“That’s good,” Zack began while leaning back, “I was already beginning to feel a little guilty.”
Cloud nodded still keeping his eyes on the food as he poked at it with his fork, he had lost appetite suddenly.
“So I guess we can start training again tomorrow, looks like you’ll be okay to handle it,” Zack explained.
“Yeah, okay,” Cloud replied while letting his eyes flicker over the table, or any other object that wasn’t Zack.
The SOLDIER frowned. Cloud was acting strange and he noticed. He had gotten him to open up a little more over the past few days and now he seemed to be retreating. What happened?
The cadet glanced out of the corner of his eye at the table where Jin and his friends were sitting. They were eating their meals but Cloud caught the look that Jin shot over at the two. He was glad that Zack’s presence had gotten them to shut up.
“Cloud,” Zack began while looking the boy over and noting the sloppy appearance, “are you alright?”
Cloud still kept his focus on his plate and continued to poke the items with his fork, “I’m fine,” he replied quickly lowering his head slightly to hide the blush that he knew was forming on his cheeks.
“I mean,” the SOLDIER began while scratching the back of his head, “did I say or do something to…offend you?”
“No,” Cloud blurted while snapping his head up and locking his eyes with Zack’s. The last thing he wanted was for Zack to think that he was mad at him or that he had done something wrong, it wasn’t even possible. Zack had been the best thing so far since his arrival in Midgar and he didn’t want to mess that up. “I,” he continued with a sigh letting his eyes wander for a moment, “sorry I guess I’m still just a little tired and groggy from the medicine I took earlier.”
Zack smiled, “It’s cool.” He couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief, though he tried not to be too obvious. It’s just he didn’t want Cloud to distance himself from him, Zack was enjoying their time together a lot and he hoped the blonde was too, and maybe he was…but still he wasn’t sure. Yeah he knew Cloud was a little more comfortable with him now but he still kept up some walls that Zack was dying to tear down.
“Well I’m not really that hungry anymore,” Cloud began while setting his fork down on the tray, “So I think I’m just going to go back to my room.”
“Alright,” Zack replied with a nod while standing up, “I guess I should finish up on some stuff at the office, might as well get it out of the way.”
The blonde nodded and got up as well following the other out of the cafeteria.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Zack said with a small smile before turning to walk down the hall.
Cloud remained in his spot as he watched Zack move further and further down the hall. He didn’t really want to go back to his room and be tormented by his thoughts…and Zack was probably busy and didn’t want to be bothered by some cadet but he just…
“Zack!” The blonde called, mentally slapping himself afterward. Why the hell did he do that? He should’ve just let him walk away, what was he supposed to say anyway?
The Soldier stopped and turned with a raised eyebrow looking at the other curiously.
“I just,” Cloud started with a shrug, “I’ve been cramped in my room all day and the more I think about it I don’t want to stay in there all night.” What the hell? Did he just suggest they do something?
Zack grinned, “Good, I would’ve been worried if you did,” he explained before tilting his head a bit gesturing for the other to follow.
Cloud caught up to him and they walked through the facility until they reached an elevator. Zack swiped his key card and within a few minutes they had arrived on some floor. The blonde looked around and out of the windows before his eyes widened. They were really high up, since he had come to Midgar he hadn’t been to too many of the different levels in the buildings. The cadets weren’t allowed access to that many.
“I just have to check on something really fast,” Zack began while opening a door and stepping into the room. Cloud remained out in the hall still looking around and out of the windows.
“Spike,” Zack said while ducking his head out of the room, “come on.”
Cloud nodded and stepped inside closing the door quietly behind him as he glanced around the office. There was a black desk in the front with a computer set on it along with a lot of papers scattered everywhere. The blue vase filled with flowers looked oddly out of place on the cluttered area.
Zack began to sift through the papers, “I’m not exactly the neatest person I guess,” he said with a grin still keeping his focus on the papers.
Cloud walked further into the office, looking around at the shelves and the pictures around the room. He saw a certificate of some sort hanging on the wall in a frame and went over to inspect it. It was a certificate of completion stating that Zack had successfully completed all levels of training and was now recognized as a first class SOLDIER. Cloud sighed, he wondered how long it would be until he received one of those, or if he would ever receive one.
There was a knock on the door and Cloud glanced from Zack to the door wondering if he should answer it.
“It’s open,” Zack responded still going through the papers on his desk a few spilling onto the floor.
The door opened and in stepped a man that Cloud thought he would never see in person. The blonde’s eyes went wide and for a minute he forgot how to breathe.
“Oh hey Seph,” Zack said with a grin as the general stepped in.
Sephiroth closed the door and walked over near the desk, almost seeming to float.
“Zackary I left you three messages,” he stated in a tone that was both soft but strong.
“What?” Zack asked while looking up from the papers, “I didn’t get any messages.”
Sighing the general glanced down to the desk and pressed a button on the phone that began to play the messages that he had left.
“Oh,” Zack replied with a blink, “those messages. I haven’t really been in my office today.”
“I need the files for recruit Tendo and recruit Johnson, both second class,” Sephiroth continued, his cat like eyes scanning the desk.
“I know I was looking for them just now,” Zack added as another paper slipped off the desk.
“Zackary,” Sephiroth began while almost glaring at the other.
Zack grinned back, “Come on Seph you know how I operate. Just one minute, there here I promise.”
“You have company,” the man stated not even turning his attention to the blonde.
“Oh yeah,” Zack began while shaking his head and looking to Cloud, “This is Cloud.”
Cloud still staring with wide eyes and an open mouth quickly shook his head trying to pull himself together.
“Cloud what?” Sephiroth asked while finally turning his attention to the cadet.
“Strife Sir,” Cloud began while standing at attention.
“Hmm, Strife,” Sephiroth began while letting his eyes pierce into the boys, “You’re in Sergeant Okuda’s unit?”
“Yes Sir,” the blonde replied.
“You’re the one who was suspended for causing a disruption then correct,” Sephiroth continued. He said it more as a matter of fact than a question.
“Yes sir,” Cloud responded, still trying to keep his voice even but the fact that Sephiroth knew about that was enough to make him want to shrivel up and disappear right there. He probably thought he was a troublemaker.
“He was suspended for a dumb reason,” Zack said with a small laugh more to himself than anything.
“He’s the one who you’re training Zackary?” The general asked still not taking his eyes off of Cloud. The blonde felt like disappearing, just the presence of Sephiroth was intimidating, he felt like he was a bug under the other mans shoe.
“Yep that’s Cloud!” Zack replied while pulling out two files, “And here they are Tendo and Johnson! I told You I had them!”
“I needed them hours ago, now I’m behind schedule,” Sephiroth began while turning away from Cloud and taking the files from Zack. His silvery hair falling over one of his shoulders.
“But you still forgive me,” Zack added with a grin.
Cloud glanced at Zack. What the hell was he doing? Didn’t he know who he was talking to? He got a chill when he saw the masamune on the generals back held securely in it’s sheath.
“There is a meeting tomorrow at seven a.m. I expect for you to be on time,” the general added before turning and walking across the room ignoring Zack’s comment.“As if I’m ever late!” Zack called just before Sephiroth exited the room.
Cloud let out a breath before relaxing. His whole body tensed as soon as he saw the general enter the room.
“You okay?” Zack asked while glancing at the boy from the corner of his eye while putting some papers into folders.
The blonde nodded stupidly while looking down at himself. He finally got to meet the “great” general that was Sephiroth and he looked like a tired bum from off of the streets. How impressive.
“I know Seph can be a little scary at first but don’t worry next time it won’t be so bad,” Zack explained while walking out from behind the desk.
“Next time?” Cloud said more to himself.
“Yeah next time,” Zack replied with a nod before crossing over to the door, “lets go. I’ve seen enough of this office for today.”
Walking out of the office Zack continued, “so what did you want to do anyways? I assure you this time it’ll be alcohol free.”
Cloud blinked, slowing coming back into reality and getting over the initial shock of seeing Sephiroth. “Yeah that would be a good idea.”
“Though I got to admit seeing you drunk was funny,” Zack started with a grin once they reached the elevator.
The blonde paled. Funny? Or just completely idiotic? “I,” he started while stepping into the elevator, “did I do anything stupid? Or say anything dumb?” He desperately wanted to know anything else that he had done last night or if he had said anything even remotely inappropriate to the other.
The SOLDIER was silent for a moment as the elevator doors closed, “Nope,” he replied while shaking his head, “you were just really giggly and clumsy,” a smile spread across his face as he thought back.
“Giggly?” What the hell? He could’ve kicked himself for that. He was acting like some damn school girl or something in front of a first class SOLDIER, he just had the best luck. Really.
“Yeah,” Zack began with a nod, “it was…” he stopped quickly before he could complete his sentence, “funny,” he said again with a slight grin. He thanked Shiva that he didn’t slip up and say “cute” like he was thinking.
“I’m glad I was so amusing,” Cloud replied while stuffing his hands into his pockets and looking out of the elevators clear glass window.
“Hey we had fun right?” Zack beamed while clamping his hand on the others shoulder.
Cloud flinched before clearing his throat, “yeah, sure,” he replied before looking down to the floor. Don’t touch me…really not now, not when things are so weird suddenly.
The SOLDIER sighed, he really had to get Cloud to not be so jumpy. He was almost missing the drunk Cloud who was full of smiles and laughter and didn’t mind when he was touched. He missed having him cling to him and he even missed the way he had looked him in the eyes at the end of the night…
“I’m not really all that presentable to go out somewhere,” Cloud spoke up once the elevator reached their floor.
“You do look like you just rolled out of bed,” Zack started while stepping out of the elevator, “but it’s okay you can blame it on the alcohol.”
Cloud was going to say something but instead just closed his mouth and ran a hand through his hair, after all it was true he had just gotten out of bed…or rather rolled.
“Anyways,” Zack continued while stopping in the middle of the hall, “if you don’t want to go out you can always just come hang out at my place. Watch a movie or something. I hate to break it to you but in the barracks you guys get gypped as far as television goes, you get like what…three channels?” He started to laugh a little while thinking back to the days when he lived in the small rooms, “but yeah I mean if you want to come over you can.”
No. That was the first thought that ran through the cadets mind. Just Zack and he in the SOLDIERS apartment? Things would’ve been fine if he didn’t have that dream…but he did, and now he was completely confused. Gawd Cloud stop acting like a dumb ass! Oh well about the dream! That’s it, that’s all it was! A dream! Don’t freak out over it! Besides, just because you may have this…unknown feeling type of thing for him doesn’t mean he has it for you. So just stop being weird already!
“Cloud?” Zack asked studying the other, practically seeing the mental battle that was going on in the others head.
The blonde turned his eyes back to Zack with a shake of his head, “Sorry,” he replied with a nervous laugh. “But uh yeah, we can hang out at your place.”
