“I thought today would never end,” Kyo began with a stretch, closing his eyes in pain for a moment. Basic training was nothing compared to the new class, and it only seemed to bring more pain than the one before, but it was a lot more challenging.
“I know,” Cloud mumbled while leaning back against his locker.
“Better get used to it though, we’re only a week in so far,” Kyo explained with a laugh while grabbing a towel from his locker.
Don’t remind me. The blonde didn’t mind the class, not at all. He wasn’t expecting it to be easy and he was more than ready to take on whatever came his way, physically anyway. But what he wasn’t prepared for at all was having Sergeant Okuda for an instructor again. One of the main reasons why he wanted to get out of basic training so bad was because he didn’t want to have to deal with the man anymore, but as always luck didn’t seem to be on his side.
He remembered it all to clearly in his mind. The first day of stepping into his new class and leaving basic training behind. It was full of recruits, some who he recognized from his last class and others that he didn’t. He even unfortunately saw that Jin and his buddies were present. But he tried to brush it aside, he wasn’t going to let it get to him…or at least he was going to try. After all this was a new start in his time with Shinra, it didn’t have to be exactly how it was at the beginning right?
The sound of a whistle blowing caught his attention and he searched the room for his new instructor. His jaw dropped when he saw Sergeant Okuda standing in front of the room. What the hell? For a moment he thought that maybe he had stepped into the wrong class out of habit, but he knew that wasn’t it once he glanced around the place a few more times. Then he thought that maybe Okuda was just going to say a few words to his former students before he introduced the new instructor or something, or maybe he was just filling in for the day. He thought anything, anything other than what he feared the truth was. But Okuda confirmed his fear once he explained to the class that he and the other instructor had decided to switch units last minute because they thought it would be best on behalf of the students.
Shaking his head he pushed himself away from his locker and opened it. Seeing his former instructor in his new class had just torn away the little bit of optimism that he had about the whole situation. It was a bittersweet thing, he was happy that he had proved Okuda wrong and had passed basic training but he still didn’t escape from him and that just…sucked. Not to mention that for the past week Okuda had been harder on him than on any of the other students. Almost as if he were trying to get him to break and just give up. Even though the blonde had passed the exam fairly and accurately it still didn’t seem to be enough for the Sergeant.
“Wait for me,” Kyo said before making his way to one of the showers.
Nodding Cloud grabbed a few items from his locker and went over to the showers. There weren’t that many recruits in the locker room anymore, many of them were already in the cafeteria obviously starving after their long day of practice.
The blonde showered quickly and wrapped his towel around his waist before going back over to his locker and getting his clothes from inside. He had become very cautious when it came to just leaving his stuff lying around since Jin’s little joke a while back.
“Does a night of homework await you?” Kyo asked while walking up and opening his locker.
“No,” Cloud began with a shake of his head, blonde spikes lower than usual because of the water, “you?”
Kyo let out a groan before nodding.
Cloud couldn’t help but smile, Kyo did it to himself really. He was such a procrastinator and always put off his assignments last minute until he had no choice but to do them because they were due the next day.
They left the locker room a few minutes later and started to walk back.
“I don’t think I’m going to head back just yet,” Cloud explained while slowing down.
“Huh?” Kyo asked while turning to look at him, “oh are you heading to Zack’s?”
The blonde nodded, “yeah I guess.”
“Alright,” Kyo began while adjusting his gym bag, “I’ll see you later then.”
“Ok see ya,” Cloud replied while turning to go down one direction while Kyo went down another.
It wasn’t anything unusual for Cloud to go to Zack’s. He had been going there for a while now so Kyo was accustomed to it. But of course he just thought they had become best friends, which was true. But that was all he knew. Cloud didn’t tell him about any new “recent” developments. He hadn’t told anybody. Didn’t plan too. Or…he wasn’t sure. It had only been about a week anyway since they had went out that night after his exams, but still since then things had gotten a lot…nicer. There wasn’t any weird tension or looks that he hoped that Zack didn’t notice him giving him. Now he could just be comfortable around him and vice versa.
But he did wonder about things sometimes. Things like was it okay? Were they always going to be a secret? He was happy with Zack, there was no doubt about that. But still now that he was actually with him it meant he was gay right? Or maybe he was bi, after all he did like Tifa for the longest time. Shaking his head he continued on his walk. It didn’t really matter he supposed, he wasn’t going to try to place labels on it. He was happy, that’s what mattered. And nobody needed to know about their personal lives anyway, so he guessed he didn’t really mind keeping it a secret.
Finally coming to Zack’s apartment he knocked on the door but only heard silence. He glanced at his watch, he was sure the SOLDIER was home. Knocking once more he still didn’t get an answer and turned the doorknob. It was unlocked so the blonde decided to step in.
“Zack?” He asked into the apartment before slipping off his shoes and walking further into the place.
Maybe he really wasn’t there after all. Dropping his gym bag on the floor Cloud walked into the kitchen and glanced around before walking to the fridge and grabbing a soda. It was funny how all Zack had was junk food and snacks in the place. He really didn’t follow the diet that a SOLDIER was supposed to go by, but Cloud supposed he didn’t need to.
Taking a sip from his soda he walked back into the living room before glancing down the hall. He took a few steps down the hall before looking to the door at the end which he knew was Zack’s room. He had never been in there though as many times as he had been to the place, after all he didn’t really have a reason to. His curiosity getting to him he walked further down the hall and placed his hand on the door that was ajar and pushed it open slowly before peering inside.
For a moment he thought that maybe Zack might’ve been asleep in there but the bed was empty.
Cloud blinked while taking in the room. While the rest of the apartment was clean kept up for the most part, Zack’s room was a disaster. The bed was unmade with covers strewn this way and that. Clothes littered the floor and papers were scattered across a desk that was off to the side of the room accompanied by a small laptop.
Shaking his head the blonde let a small smile appear on his face, it actually made sense to see the SOLDIERS room in such a mess. His office was pretty disorganized too. He figured the rest of the apartment was only clean because he didn’t spend as much time in the rest of the place. Walking into the room he tried hard not to step on anything while making his way over to the desk. The papers seemed to be office work that he had brought back home, nothing interesting. Turning his foot got tangled in a shirt and he fell against the desk hearing something fall to the floor with a thud.
“Shit,” he mumbled while glancing around the floor. He finally saw that what had fallen off was a small white vase that held a few flowers, pink, purple and blue. Again with the flowers, he thought while picking up the vase and setting it back on the desk. He frowned for a moment as he realized that he didn’t even know what part of the desk the vase had been on since he didn’t notice it before. Hopefully it wouldn’t matter or Zack wouldn’t realize. He didn’t want him to think he was snooping through his room, he was just curious to see what it was like.
Turning carefully this time he walked away from the desk before looking at the bed. Not fair. He had a real bed, not some small hard piece of concrete.
He froze for a moment when he heard the sound of a door open and close followed by the sound of keys falling onto the table.
Cloud quickly made his way over to the door of the room and stepped out while walking down the hallway cautiously. He saw the SOLDIER rummaging through the fridge and walked into the living room.
“Hey,” Cloud finally spoke up while setting his soda down on the table. He was glad that he hadn’t spilled it when he tripped in Zack’s room.
Zack turned his head quickly, his eyes narrowed obviously not expecting someone to be in his apartment. But once he saw it was the blonde his eyes softened and he broke into a grin.
“Spike!” He started while pulling away from the fridge, a beer in hand, “how the hell did you get in here?”
“Door was open,” Cloud explained while glancing to the floor, “sorry I thought you were in here. But I just got here a minute before you did,” he continued nervously.
“I left the door unlocked? Must’ve really been in a rush,” Zack began while making his way over to the blonde, “Don’t apologize, I don’t mind,” he said before tilting the recruits chin up with his finger and placing a soft kiss on his lips.
Cloud got that feeling in his stomach that he always did when they kissed. Maybe it would fade after a while, it had only been a week, but he hoped that it never would.
“Good day?” Zack asked while popping the top of his beer and taking a chug before setting it down on the table and walking down the hall.
“Regular classes were fine,” Cloud started while falling onto the couch, “but training was tiring.”
“Tiring? You’ve only been with it a week, you can’t be tired yet!” Zack called from down the hall jokingly.
Cloud frowned. Maybe I wouldn’t be as tired if Okuda would just back off! He didn’t see how it was fair that everyone else in the class gave one hundred percent of their best where as he had to give one hundred and ten!
“Hey,” Zack spoke while tapping the other on the shoulder.
Cloud turned seeing that Zack had changed into his usual sweatpants and t-shirt and was now sitting next to him on the couch.
“Is it because of Okuda?” The SOLDIER asked.
The blonde dropped his gaze from Zack’s and sunk lower into the couch, “He treats me different than everyone else. It’s like he’s trying to wear me out.”
Zack sighed while running a hand through his hair. He was just as upset to hear that Sergeant Okuda had switched from basic training to the recruits. Cloud was progressing but that bastard Okuda was making it as hard as possible for him. Zack wanted to do something, he was sure that he could. Being a first class SOLDIER had it’s advantages, and being second to Sephiroth was definitely icing on the cake. If he told the board to do something about the instructors, he was sure they would without questions asked but….Cloud, Cloud would be mad at him. He didn’t want special treatment, he had told him that a few times. And while Zack respected that, he didn’t like to just sit back and do nothing while the person he cared about had to endure that bullshit.
Pressing his lips against the blonde’s temple he wrapped his arms around him. “You made it out of basic training with him being your instructor, you’ll make it out of this one too,” Zack explained softly.
“Yeah,” Cloud replied with a small nod, a slight blush creeping onto his cheeks. It still was sort of strange to him to have someone be so affectionate and caring towards him, but it wasn’t a bad thing. Turning a bit so he could place his arms around the other he closed his eyes when he felt Zack press his lips against his. That feeling in his stomach coming back again accompanied by the feeling of becoming light headed. He tightened his hold on the SOLDIER as he leaned more into the kiss. Zack ran his tongue over the blonde’s lips, silently seeking permission to explore more. Cloud hesitantly opened his mouth to the other. He was still shy when it came to these types of kisses, he didn’t have any experience at all and always felt like he was doing it wrong. Zack knew about his lack of experience but was more than happy to teach him.
Zack ran his tongue along the inside of Cloud’s mouth expertly as the blonde shyly tried to do the same. His eyes snapped open when he felt himself pinned against the couch with Zack on top of him.
“Z, Zack,” he started while breaking the kiss, his face becoming more red by the second.
The SOLDIER couldn’t help but chuckle. Cloud really was too cute in his opinion and too innocent for his own good.
“Relax Spike,” he began while nipping at the blonde’s ear, “I’ll be good.”
Cloud’s eyes fluttered briefly at the feeling before he moved his arms from around Zack and instead placed his hands into the soft silky raven strands of hair.
Zack grinned, “I thought if you were more comfortable you could relax more, so you wouldn’t be so tense.”
“I…wasn’t tense,” Cloud replied while looking up at the other with wide eyes.
“Hmm,” Zack began while leaning down again to place a few kisses on the blonde’s neck, “I could feel it in your kiss.”
“Oh,” the blonde mumbled while tightening his grip in Zack’s hair.
“Don’t worry so much about it,” Zack continued while pulling back to look at the other, “just feel and go with it,” he finished before sealing the recruits lips with his.
Cloud froze for a moment, his eyes still open before pushing Zack back, “I don’t know how to do that,” he admitted with a bit of a frown.
“You didn’t even try,” Zack replied with a laugh.
“It’s not funny,” Cloud started while turning his head to the side, “I told you I’m new at this. You have to…teach me.”
Zack grinned, “that’s what I’m trying to do.”
Leave it to Cloud to make something like kissing into an actual lesson. Everything he knew so far was in black and white. Study your textbooks, learn the material, ace your exams. Steps, were what he knew. This whole “just feel and go with it” stuff was definitely different.
Turning his head back he looked up at Zack, that same grin still etched on the SOLDIERS features.
Pulling Zack down more the blonde kissed him again, deepening it upon contact. In a moment he had forgotten all about his previous events during the day and the only important thing that occupied his mind was Zack and this passionate kiss that they had now become entangled in.
Cloud broke the kiss once more, but they were still just inches apart.
“Is…is that better?” The blonde asked softly, slightly out of breath.
If Zack weren’t a gentleman he would’ve taken the boy right then and there. His innocence and soft voice making him more desirable.
Not responding the SOLDIER smirked before capturing the others mouth again, gaining a soft but still audible moan from the other. That made a shiver run through Zack and he felt himself smile against the others lips briefly.
After a few moments Cloud broke the kiss again. Where as Zack could probably go on for a lot longer, Cloud, though he kept up pretty well would always give up first.
“See,” Zack began, “nothing to it right?”
Cloud smiled before glancing away for a moment embarrassed then locked his gaze back to the others. “What did you do today anyways? You’re usually here before I’m even done with class.”
Moving from off of Cloud Zack laid down next to him wrapping an arm around the blonde’s waist. “Things took longer than I planned,” he explained while closing his eyes.
“Like what?” Cloud asked moving some of the SOLDIERS hair away from his face. He sometimes thought that he talked to much about his problems and complained so much that he didn’t give Zack the opportunity to tell him what was going on with him. Cloud wanted to know what went on in his life when he wasn’t around, after all he knew Zack did a lot of stuff. The life of a first class SOLDIER was very busy.
“Well,” Zack began while opening his eyes, “my watch shift this morning lasted way longer than usual because the person who was supposed to cover me came was way late. So that pushed everything on my agenda back. Then I had to go with Seph to this meeting that I swear was like three hours and I still don’t even know what it was about.”
Cloud raised an eyebrow, “what if General Sephiroth ask you something about it tomorrow?”
“Eh,” Zack began with a wave of his hand, “He knows by now that I never listen in those things.”
Cloud smiled slightly before moving closer the SOLDIER. “Was that everything?”
“Mm,” Zack started, “I went down to the bottom plate again.”
“What? Why?” Cloud asked while sitting up slightly.
Zack looked up at him, “I had to. I didn’t go by myself though, there were other SOLDIERS.”
“It’s dangerous down there isn’t it? I haven’t been,” Cloud explained while looking to the table next to them thinking about all of the bad stories he had heard about the lower plate since moving to Midgar.
“It is,” Zack started, “but I know the place now so I’m used to it. But don’t ever go down there unless its with me.”
Cloud turned his focus back to Zack. He was about to say something along the lines of “I can take care of myself,” but when he saw the look on the others face he simply closed his mouth and nodded.
Zack smiled trying to break the seriousness of the moment. Though he was serious about what he said. There were too many parts in the bottom plate of Midgar that would be a threat to the blonde. His looks and size would only draw attention to him. He knew the types of perverted assholes that lingered around the city and also just the plain crazy psycho ones. Just the thought of anybody touching the recruit made Zack’s blood boil, and he was determined to make sure that nothing like that did happen.
“Your friend lives down there right?” Cloud asked.
“What?” Zack asked while blinking.
“Yeah,” Cloud continued with a nod, “you mentioned it that night when you saw me sitting outside. You said you just came back from visiting your friend.”
“Oh right,” Zack replied with a nod, “yeah.” He had forgotten all about that he had even mentioned that.
“Did you visit them when you went back today?” The blonde continued.
“No,” Zack began with a shake of his head, “he moved…that last time I saw him was kind of a…goodbye.”
“Oh,” Cloud replied quietly, “was he a close friend?”
“Yeah,” the SOLDIER replied.
“Sorry,” the blonde said softly while lying back on the couch and moving next to Zack.
“It’s alright. It’s not a sad thing, besides life is full of changes,” Zack started while closing his eyes again and wrapping his arms around Cloud, “and that’s not always a bad thing.”
Cloud knew that was true. His life had been changing non stop since he had come to Midgar, but not all of the changes were bad. “Yeah,” he began while lifting his head slightly and looking at the other, “are you tired?”
“A little,” Zack began while still keeping his eyes closed. “Long day ya know?”
Cloud placed his head back down against the couch as he felt arms tighten around him.
“But that doesn’t mean you have to leave,” Zack started his voice becoming more quiet, “stay here.”
“Sure,” the blonde replied as he watched a small smile appear on Zack’s face. Closing his eyes he realized he was a little tired too from practice. He didn’t mind staying there with Zack, in fact he liked the idea of being next him while he sleep. It definitely outweighed lying back in the barracks on the hard beds, but despite that it was just nice being next to the other.
Zack cracked an eye open and looked down at the small blonde that was pressed up next to him. It looked like he was a lot more tired than the SOLDIER and had already fallen asleep. Zack smiled and ran his fingers lightly through the spiky blonde hair.
“You’re friend lives down there right?”
Sighing the SOLDIER continued to stroke the boy’s hair. He didn’t lie to Cloud earlier exactly, but he didn’t tell him the truth either. After all was it even worth it? It was in the past and didn’t matter now did it? He didn’t want to take the chance of upsetting Cloud. If he knew that Zack had just recently ended a relationship, he might think that he was just a rebound or something. But that wasn’t it, totally wasn’t it. Zack ended things with his ex because of Cloud, because he couldn’t stop thinking of him.
Maybe he should’ve just told him the truth though. Told him that the friend wasn’t a he but a she, and that at one time they were more than friends. After all it was too early to lie in their “new” relationship right? But sometimes little lies were necessary…weren’t they?
In any case, it was in the past. Cloud was who he was with now. And there was no need for him to know about Zack’s past relationships anyways.
Closing his eyes again he pulled the blonde closer to him.
I did say goodbye to a friend that night, because I couldn’t be with her anymore with the feelings that I had for you. It wouldn’t be fair to her or me to stay together if my heart wasn’t in it. She never made me feel the way you do Cloud. Aerith deserves more, she deserves to be happy, to find what I have…she deserves that…
