13. Visions of the Future.
The following afternoon, Tifa met up with Miki who was swimming lengths in the pool in a skimpy and revealing orange and blue two-piece. The usual gang of lads were watching her and once again passing remarks. When they saw Tifa they perked up even more.
“Hey, babe! Why you don’t got a bikini? I’d pay to see you in one.” One of them shouted.
Tifa ignored him. Though his shout alerted Miki to Tifa’s appearance and the peach haired girl swam over immediately and hugged the edge of the pool, smiling up her the older teen.
“Hi!” She said.
“Hi, Miki.”
“You up for doing something, Tifa?”
“Okay, what do you have in mind?”
“Dunno, maybe go and get something to drink and just sit and chat?”
“Sounds nice.”
Miki climbed nimbly out of the pool, ignoring the whistles and whoops and applause from the small group of ever watching boys. Tifa waited while the younger girl wrapped a towel around her waist, tucking the edge in to secure it like a skirt, and then they strolled down the rubber edged steps and found themselves in a little bar across from the restaurant. They allowed minors in and served soft drinks so there were no shocked or disapproving looks as they ordered carbonated soft drinks and then took a little corner booth. There were mostly older people in the little bar, and two thirds were men so the girls were getting plenty of interested looks but they just ignored the attention and passed the time together.
“That guy you were dancing with, you know him?”
“No not really, I know he’s one of that annoying gang of idiots but we got chatting and he seemed okay when he was alone. He’s a good dancer too.”
“So, did you just dance together, or is there maybe more to it?”
“Oh, no. He’s obviously interested. I can tell that but I already have a boyfriend back home.”
“Oh, you do? Really?” Tifa gushed. “Tell me more.”
“Mm hmm. He's the drummer in the band I sing with." Miki said frowning slightly and halfway rolling her eyes.
“I feel like you don't seem all that happy about the situation?”
“Well I like him and all.” Miki replied wide eyed and expressive. “But I love to dance as well as sing. And the problem is he's always on at me to focus on singing. He’s very serious about his music, says the band can go far but he insists that we have to be dedicated in order to make it. So, he keeps saying I need to give up on dancing, says there's no room for that, but I love it. Just as much as I love singing and I don’t want to give up.”
“You seemed really good at it yesterday in the training room.”
“Thanks. All we seem to have been doing recently is fighting. I came on the trip with mom and pops partly to get some space from him. Some perspective.”
“Has it helped at all?”
“Not really. I know what I want, to sing and dance. But I can tell he’ll just see that as me not showing commitment. I really like him but I can’t see how I can do what I want and keep him as well. It’s just really confusing.”
“I imagine it is, wanting two different things at the same time, and trying to keep other people happy without it being at your own expense… I don’t envy you.”
They slipped into silence for a while and Tifa could see Miki had lost herself in her own weighing pressures for a moment. She wished she could think of something to say, to pull the girl out of her reverie but she kept going back to her own thoughts about Zangan. About the strange sense that Cloud and those past feelings for him were somehow rearing up through her dreams. However, she had been telling herself that the dreams must simply be her subconscious relating Cloud and Zangan. She had told herself that anything she dreamed about Cloud must surely in reality be about Zangan. It was just that for some inexplicable reason, her subconscious was mashing the two people together.
Miki suddenly drew her back out of her own momentary reverie.
“What about you, Tifa? You said you were out here looking for your boyfriend, that he’d disappeared? But it was complicated?”
“Something like that. He’s older than me. He loves me but I think he thinks he’s too old for me or something.”
“Age is just a number.”
Tifa nodded her agreement.
“I just have to find him and talk to him. I think he just needs to give himself permission to be with me.”
“What do your parents have to say? My Ken’s seventeen and mom and pops ain’t happy about us being together but they allow it because they like him.”
“My parents are both dead. I don’t have any family now. It’s just me.”
“Wow, I’m really sorry Tifa, that must be really hard…”
They were abruptly interrupted by the young dancing boy from the previous day. He appeared at the side of them, almost standing over Miki, facing Tifa. He was leaning casually around the side of the partition, a lopsided smirk complimenting his obviously horny and booze-tempered gaze that danced superficially across the girl’s faces and then wandered slowly and hungrily down their curvy bodies.
Although Tifa was far shapelier, Miki, only wearing her little orange and blue bikini and her towel, had much more flesh on display and that display seemed to be completely capturing the boy’s attention.
“Hello tasty ladies!” He sang through a toothsome grin.
Tifa watched his eyes dart from her face down her chest and then across the table to Miki, as she half turned to look up at him. However, his eyes were looking down the younger girl’s bikini adorned cleavage and didn’t hold Miki’s eyes at all. The peach haired girl surprised Tifa by smiling up at the boy.
He annoyed Tifa, to her he was just another one of those irritating hormone-driven horny young men who were only interested in girls for what they looked like. However, Miki seemed a little taken with him. Maybe she just liked his company. Other than Tifa, she didn’t seem to have developed many friendships on board and still spent most of her time with her parents. So, she supposed it was understandable that the girl would attach herself more readily to other people her own age and turn a blind eye to the less appealing elements of them.
“Hi Tomo.” Miki sang.
She shuffled across her bench seat to allow the newcomer to sit down. Tifa felt disgruntled and mildly annoyed with Miki. She didn’t want to talk or share stuff with this boy. And she felt he was invading their privacy, uninvited, and somewhat greasy in his method of insinuating himself into their conversation.
When Miki introduced Tomo to her, Tifa offered him a pleasant smile but soon went quiet, merely listening in to the others’ rather flirtatious conversation. After a few increasingly uncomfortable minutes, already feeling disgruntled and now starting to feel like a gooseberry in their company; Tifa made an excuse.
She told Miki she would see her later, gave another polite smile to Tomo and stood up to leave. Tomo whined about her leaving them, trying to be flirtatious and funny, though to Tifa it was just smarmy, and she took no notice and left.
She passed by again, a few minutes later on her way to pick up a newly printed newspaper from the gift shop and could see that Tomo had started buying shots for himself and Miki and the girl was obviously already drunk.
She returned to the bar and, trying to keep her cool, strolled back to the corner booth. She gave Tomo a dark look, ignoring the horny look in his eyes again.
“You shouldn’t really be drinking Miki.” She said, then shifted her attention to Tomo.
“You know how old she actually is?”
Tomo smirking, his lips smeared with what could only be lipstick, was busy looking at the way her vest top jutted forward as he replied.
“Old enough… She’s old enough… For plenty.” He was already starting to slur his words.
Tifa rolled her eyes and went back to addressing her new friend, wo was giggling at Tomo’s comment.
“Why don’t you come to the training room with me for a while? It’ll be fun!” Tifa asked the girl.
Miki, eyes unfocussed and lipstick smeared, banged her fist on the table in a comical expression of irritation. Though Tifa wasn’t laughing.
“It’s not fun, it’s boring! And you’re sounding just like pops! I’m having a good time here! This is fun! You… You just need to relax, Tifa.” Miki slurred, her voice a couple of decibels beyond her top-level normal.
“Yeah, hot-stuff. Relax! Why don’t you join us?!” Tomo said laughing. “I’m buying.”
“No thank you.” Tifa replied sarcastically, and then turned on her heel and stalked away.
