It was the middle of summer, Cid had let the entire garden go on holiday for a month. He himself had gone to Centra to help his wife run the orphanage, which was open again. The cadets had gone home to see their families, even the staff members had gone home making the halls very lonely. Selphie had gone back to Trabia to see her friends, Zell had gone home to his Ma and lover Seifer had gone with him. Xu had taken lover Quistis away to Dollet to see her father, Rinoa had also gone to see her father and Irvine had left that morning to get the train to Galbadia.

Squall had nowhere to go, of course Laguna had had a hare-brained idea about the two of them spending the time together in a father-son bonding thing with lots of uncomfortable dinners and horrible events that Squall despised. No, spending much needed quiet time along for a whole month was what he needed, a break from Selphie’s hyperness, Rinoa’s clinginess, Zell’s terrible table manners, and a break from turning into a schoolgirl whenever a certain cowboy looked at him a certain way. He definitely did not need to spend the time with the world’s most effeminate man who was forever asking how was Rinoa? When was he going to bring her to Esthar? Was there going to be a wedding?

It was true that the young sorceress was still hanging around with Squall and the others but they weren’t a couple or he didn’t think they were a couple. Rinoa was more like a puppy than a girlfriend, she whined and followed him around looking pleased when he spoke to her. There was someone that made him go weak at the knees and it wasn’t Rinoa but he wasn’t ready to tell his father who that was yet. Squall leant back in his chair in his office listening the sound of silence. It was nice to have the whole garden to himself.

A pair of hands landed on his shoulders from behind, he jumped out of his chair in shock and spun round to face the intruder. He relaxed part-way would he saw her.

“Didn’t mean to scare you Squally.” The young sorceress waved at him.

He frowned. “What have I said about calling me that?” He said, falling in full commander mode, arms folding in annoyance.

“What?” She pouted innocently, reaching out to touch his arm. “It’s nice to have pet names for friends.”

The brunette sighed. “Rinoa what are you doing here? You said you were going to spend the holiday with your father.”

“Well that was the plan but then I heard that you would be all alone here so then I thought about how fun it would be for the two of us to spend the time alone together.”

Squall’s eyes widened. Fun? The thought stuck terror into him. “S-So you’re staying?”

She grinned and flung her arms around him causing him to wince. “Yes Squally, it’ll be just you and me for a whole month, isn’t it exciting?”

The brunette stood stiffly, arms down by his sides. He was really starting to wish he’d gone to Esthar after all. Laguna was annoying but he wasn’t clingy or whiny.

“It’s going to be so much fun sweetie.”

He frowned. “It’s Squall!”

She pouted. “What about Irvine?”

He blinked at the change of subject. “What about him?”

“He calls you honey, sweetie, baby, darling, sweetheart but you don’t even care but heaven forbid if I call you something nice.”

Squall sighed. “That’s the way he talks Rinoa, everyone’s Darling or sweetie to him.”

She gave him a look. “Are you that clueless? He treats you differently and you know it.” She made a face. “Be careful he doesn’t turn you gay.”

“Turn me gay?” He doubted that was likely especially as he was already gay but Rinoa didn’t know that. Was it true what she said about the cowboy? Irvine was a friend, a good close friend, someone who was naturally friendly, someone who only had to look at Squall that way and he melted into a pile of mush on the floor.

Rinoa was smiling at him again. “Anyway enough about Irvine, he’s not here it’s just the two of us.” She latched onto him again like a limpet clinging to his arm excitedly

The double doors to Squall’s office were flung open causing them both to jump and stare at the cowboy who waltzed in.

“Would you believe it? Balamb trains have actually decided to run on time for once, on the one day that I’m late.”

The two brunette’s blinked at him.

The cowboy grinned. “Looks like I’m stuck here after all.”

Rinoa’s eyes narrowed.

“I thought you were visiting your father?” He asked.

She wrapped her arms around Squall. “Actually Squall and I were going to have summer here alone together. She put emphasise on ‘together’.

“Oh.” The cowboy glanced at Squall then back at the door. “Well if you really want I could go-”

Squall instantly started shaking his head, eyes wide staring at the cowboy silently pleading with his friend not to leave him with Rinoa.

“I think that would be best.” The girl said.

Squall looked desperate. “W-Well it would be mean to just throw him out of his home when he has nowhere to go, don’t you think?”

Rinoa turned and pouted at him.

Irvine grinned. “Great!” He walked up to stand between them, draping an arm around each of them, grinning at Squall. “I guess it’ll be just the three of us then.”

Rinoa glared at him and pushed his arm away, trying to stand between the two men. Irvine looked amused at the fact that a mere girl terrified the great commander Leonhart, if a really clinging and annoying girl.

“So how about we all go out to Balamb tonight for a few drinks to celebrate our summer plans?”

“Actually Irvine, Squall and I were hoping to stay in tonight and watch a movie.”

The scared brunette glanced between them. “Well there’s room in my dorm for three, we could all stay in and watch one.” He told Rinoa, then glancing up at the cowboy he added. “And I have a few beers in the fridge.”

The cowboy fingers stroked his shoulder through the leather and he leaned down to speak the his friend, so Squall could feel warm breath on his face making him shiver. “Sounds good darlin’.”

Rinoa glanced between them in confusion, Squall had stopped paying attention to her, in fact he had stopped moving altogether, he was staring at Irvine and she didn’t like it.

“Squally!” She tugged on his arm.

“Huh?” He blinked out of his trance suddenly.

She scowled at the cowboy. “I’m surprised you didn’t go with Selphie, thought you were desperate to win her over.” Her voice dripped disgust for the cowboy’s habits.

Irvine laughed. “Oh no she are I are just friends, she’s not my type.”

“And what is your type?” She could have imagined it but she was sure the taller man glanced at Squall quickly. “Someone taller,” He laughed. “and less hyper.”

Squall walked away from them towards the lift, causing the cowboy’s arm to fall from his shoulders, leaving him strangely cold without the other man’s body heat pressed against him. Rinoa hurried to catch up, following him to the lift.

“So what are we watching?” Irvine asked as he followed.

“Nothing girly.”

“But Squall I thought you liked my girly movies.”

The cowboy laughed.

“Rinoa you can’t really believe that a guy saves a girl, they fall madly in love and they all live happily ever after.”

She lay her head on his shoulder. “But that’s what happened to us, Squally.”

He groaned, glancing at Irvine who smirked at him.

Oh god, maybe Esthar would have been a good place to have summer after all.

“Rinoa it doesn’t work that way, it never lasts.”

He looked up at him with a pout. “Why not?”

His eyes flicked to Irvine. “There’s always- complications.”

She followed his gaze with a frown. “Well I’m sure we can overcome those.”

The lifted pinged when it reached the dormitory level and Irvine exited first and was down the corridor heading for Squall’s dorm, the brunette followed more awkwardly as Rinoa would not let go of his right side. He was forced to half drag her down the hallways. Irvine smirked at them and waited until the door code was typed in then he went in first, looking around. This was the first time he had been in Squall’s dorm, the brunette had always come to his dorm instead to play cards with the others usually.

“It’s- very- it’s what I expected.” He smiled.

The living room was plane-ish, not overly so, a large fireplace was on one wall with a mantle of photos over it, the sofa faced it, the TV sat to the left of the couch and a leather arm chair was facing the TV.

Rinoa headed straight for the DVD shelve, Squall had quite a few to choose from, whenever there was a Christmas of Birthdays his friends got him DVDs as they didn’t know what else he wanted. Irvine went straight to the kitchen, coming back to a six pack of beer, setting them on the coffee table along with a pack of biscuits he had found. “Should have brought some popcorn.” He muttered.

Squall leant over the back of the black leather sofa watching the cowboy sit down on the couch in front of him. His fingers that dangled over it brushed against the cowboy’s long silky brown hair and he just managed to hold back from stroking his hands through it then moving up to caress his scalp, he cocked his head at the nice little image he had going now. The other man leaning back into his touch, massaging at the back of his long neck, strong shoulders, hands drifting round to his chest and abdomen, feeling the muscles that lay there.

He snapped out of it before his thoughts got the better of him, realizing for the first time that the cowboy was looking at him expectantly.

He patted the leather beside him. “Come on, I saved you a seat.”

The brunette’s lips twitched slightly and he pushed off the back of the sofa to walk around it, very aware that the sexy cowboy was watching him he put extra swing into his hips, sitting close beside his friend.

Irvine instantly wrapped an arm around him, grinning like a Cheshire cat. “Hello gorgeous.” He drawled.

The brunette rolled his eyes. “Save it for the women.”

“But I don’t want women I want you.” One arm was wrapped around Squall with the other hand he tilled up his friend’s chin, running fingers down his pale throat.

The brunette lay a hand on his friend’s chest not to push him away just for balance… and to feel the muscles beneath the thin shirt the cowboy wore.

Hot breath tickled his skin, making him shiver waiting to be kissed. The other man was so close.

He jumped when a hand was suddenly on his thigh and moving up, stopping on the inside of his thigh, inches from his groin, rubbing in circles. He heard a quite whine, from his own lips.

“You’re so fucking beautiful, you know that right?”

The moment shattered as Rinoa marched up and torn her boyfriend from the cowboy. Squall sat blinking in confusion, cheeks flushed from the close proximity to the man of his affections.

Irvine groaned. “I forgot about her.” He muttered.

“What the hell are you doing to my Squally?! You’ll confuse him!”

“He didn’t look very confused to me.”

“My Squally is 100% straight and very into me!”

“Oh yeah Straight guys get hard-ons when I touch them all the time.” He said sarcastically.

The brunette blushed, looking about ready to sink into the sofa and never come up for air.

“Squally! What is he talking about?!” Rinoa demanded, looking confused.

“Err-” He managed to get his wobbly legs to work long enough to get him off the sofa and towards the TV.

“I-I’ll put on the movie.” He looked at the DVD that Rinoa had picked out. “Sleeping beauty?” He raised an eyebrow.

“Yes a fairytale, like you said.” She clapped her hands together, looking dreamy. “Oh I wish we were like the characters in that.”

“Yeah I wish you’d fall into an eternal sleep too.” Irvine muttered.

Rinoa made a disgusted sound. “Irvine some of us are romantic and we don’t just fall into bed with the first person we see.”

Squall walked back to the sofa.

The girl looked at the cowboy. “Irvine this is the couples seat, go sit over there.” She pointed to the recliner.

“Maybe you should go over there then.”

Squall sighed. “I’ll go.”

“No, Squally!”

“You don’t have to do that.” They protested at once.

“You two stay there.” He sat in the leather chair. “And play nice.” He added as they sat at opposite ends and glared at each other.

Squall tipped the chair back, raising the foot rest and settling back while trying hard not to glance over the cowboy who’s eyes barely moved from him through out the whole movie.

Irvine’s attention was solely focused on the reclined sexy brunette, his mind started to play tricks on him and it wasn’t long before he had a nice little fantasy running round his head. He envisioned pressing the lithe body to the chair beneath himself, straddling his waist. The thought of making Squall squirm caused him to smirk at the brunette who glanced almost fearfully over at him sometimes. He’d like to see if Mr silent could, or would scream for him.

“I wish you’d stop that.” Rinoa hissed.

“Stop what?” The cowboy asked, eyes not leaving Squall for a second.

The brunette glanced over uncomfortably, knowing the other two were looking at him and glaring at each other. This was meant to be a quiet break, to get away from things but instead he was being fought over.

The young sorceress got up after an hour and disappeared into the bathroom, shutting the door, Irvine leapt from the sofa as soon as she was out of sight, sitting on the arm of Squall’s recliner.

“Thought she’d never leave.”

Squall sighed. “Why are you doing this?”

“Don’t tell me you don’t like it.”

“I didn’t say that….” He started to say, causing a bright grin from the other man. “But why now?”

“It’s vacation, thought we could be alone.” He made a face. “But I didn’t count on Miss Clingy still being here.”

Squall frowned. “I thought you missed your train.”

Irvine chuckled. “You thought I went to the train station with no luggage?”

Squall tried to think back, he never remembered seeing any bags would the cowboy had arrived back at garden.

“I went to see off Seffie and I thought it’d be a surprise, when I saw you with Rinoa- Well I wasn’t sure what to think for a second.”

The cowboy chuckled and Squall jumped slightly as a hand stroked the side of his face, a finger brushing over his lips. Squall parted them under the light touch, sweeping out his tongue to wrap around the cowboy’s index finger drawing it into his mouth, sucking on the digit. He glanced up, meeting and holding the other man’s gaze earning a deep moan from the other man.

“Christ Squall….” Another hand buried in his hair, caressing his scalp as his mind filled with imagines of that pretty little mouth wrapped around his cock. He groaned in frustration, longing to strip the shorter man naked and take him right there, he pulled his hand back, letting his finger slip from Squall’s hot mouth, not missing the pout of disappointment.

Smirking lips landed on his own, causing the pout to vanish as Squall moaned quietly, kissing back just as eagerly wishing they were alone right now, he’d wanted this for so long.

The toilet flushed and they parted, both pairs of eyes looking at the door instantly. “What do we do about her?”

Squall sighed. “I don’t know, she won’t listen when I tell her I’m not interested.”

The bathroom door opened, flooding light into the darkened living room.

“She’s not planning on sleeping in here with you right?”

Squall made a scared face. “I hope not.”

Irvine grinned. “Then when she leaves, we can be alone.”

The brunette smiled, anticipation filling his eyes.

Rinoa walked back into the room, glaring at the fact that Irvine had left the sofa and was near her Squally. The cowboy headed back the couch, blowing the commander a kiss, which irritated Rinoa more.
